WHAM! 101.1FM Presents: Live at the Shanachie

WHAM! 101.1FM is pleased to present "Live at the Shanachie" featuring audio recordings of live performances at the Shanachie Theater. Including scenes, musicals, instrumentals, and other audio from a wide variety of Shanachie performances, this half hour segment is presented commercial free. WHAM! is proud to support the Shanachie Theater and the fine arts along with local supporters, and listeners like you.

((OOC Note: Once a week, WHAM will be playing a half hour of random songs and scenes from different performances of Shanachie productions. They could be taken from current shows or past productions, starting with the September 2015 season on. Scenes and songs would generally range from three minutes, as the typical song length, to ten minutes for extended scenes. In most cases, audio would be preceded by the name of the production, a set up for the scene or song, and the performers that would be heard in that audio.

The purpose is to provide a bit of a 'teaser' to the public to advertise the theater, its productions, and its performers. It's just a way to bring a bit of the theater to everyone's homes, so characters that might not attend the theater can still experience small parts of the shows. At the end of the segment, listeners would be provided details on how to get tickets to the Shanachie to see and hear upcoming shows.

This thread is open to everyone.

Everyone in the Shanachie is encouraged to post here with one of the scenes, musicals, ballet songs, orchestra arrangements, or any other audio that their character preformed on stage. You can say WHAM recorded it with the sound equipment in the theater. Don't worry - It's worked out with Mataya. Keep in mind, though, this is radio. You can write out any actions, but only sound will go through to the public. Do as much or as little as you like. Post a video of the scene, the lyrics to the song, etc.

Performers are also free to say that some NPC secretary at WHAM contacted your character to give a brief introduction to their scene before it was played, their thoughts on the scene and/or the play/musical/ballet, etc. Just keep the mini-interview short and sweet, please. You can even say it was a phone interview to make it simple for your character if they are a work-a-holic and wouldn't be able to make it in to the studio. You are also more than welcome to come directly to the WHAM recording studio in the marketplace and record songs there. No one worry about following a particular format or anything. Write as you will, and just have fun.

Others who are not in the theater may post here with their thoughts as they listen at home or at work to one of the segment clips. Got questions" Just ask. ))

Les Miserables "I Dreamed A Dream' preformed by Yasmin, as Fantine

Yasmin's Introduction: "I am Yasmin, one of the evening DJs here at WHAM! 101.1FM, and this is a solo song I did at the Shanachie called "I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Miserables. I was so excited to be able to play Fantine and sing this beautifully sad song. I believe most people would be able to relate to the pain of having loved and lost, as well as the regret of feeling like your life didn't go as you hoped and dreamed. I was asked to do a summary to set up this song for the scene and context and everything and, since I have a contract with WHAM, I needed to say something. But honestly, I feel the lyrics speak for themselves..."

There was a time when men were kind, when their voices were soft and their words inviting. There was a time when love was blind and the world was a song and the song was exciting. There was a time....Then it all went wrong....♪

I dreamed a dream in times gone by, when hope was high and life worth living. I dreamed that love would never die. I dreamed that God would be forgiving. Then I was young and unafraid and dreams were made and used and wasted. There was no ransom to be paid, no song unsung, no wine untasted. But the tigers come at night, with their voices soft as thunder, as they tear your hope apart and they turn your dream to shame. ♪

He slept a summer by my side. He filled my days with endless wonder. He took my childhood in his stride, but he was gone when autumn came. And still I dream he'll come to me - that we'll live the years together. But there are dreams that cannot be, and there are storms we cannot weather. ♪

I had a dream my life would be so much different from this hell I'm living, so different now from what it seemed....Now life has killed....the dream I dreamed. ♫ Yasmin would occasionally change the way she sung the song over the course of the show's run. Some times she would focus on the singing, while other times she would focus on the emotion of the song. WHAM would play both versions at different times: powerful vocal rendition by Idina Menzel in "Glee" beautiful emotional rendition by Anne Hathaway in "Les Miserables"

Les Miserables "One Day More" - Ensemble & Chorus

Mataya's Introduction: "Hey, I'm Mataya. Most people know me, but if you don't, I'm the owner of the Shanachie Theater, and I popped up here to promote Les Miserables, the current Theater Company production, running until Saturday, the 10th of October. Tickets are still available from the box office - we're not sold out yet!

"Anyway, the song I wanted to share with everyone is One Day More. It's the end of Act One ensemble piece, and in my opinion, is one of the finest musical theater production numbers there has ever been. The main cast are almost all represented, and the chorus make a powerful addition as the music swells to its finale.

"Those of you who were there on opening night will be aware that in the theater, anything and everything can go wrong, and this song was a perfect example of that on our first night. The Thenardiers are supposed to give their piece from two trapdoors on either side of the stage - on opening night, Madame Thenardier's trapdoor stuck halfway up and wouldn't open any further, so we had the wonderful sight of the devious Thenardiers peering out through about half a foot of opening and still managing to make themselves heard! It was amazing!"

The recording is clear and full, each voice well represented in the ensemble.

Les Miserables "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" - Marius, as performed by Arandir

Arandir's Introduction: "Mae g'ovannen. My name is Arandir, and I have been asked to introduce this next song from the production currently playing at the Shanachie Theater. It is a sad song about loss and grief, and one I'm sure many people can relate to. The song finds Marius lamenting the deaths of his friends after the failed uprising. As the only survivor, he feels not only grief and loneliness at his friends' deaths, but a sense of failure and guilt that he has survived when his friends have not. I think the song speaks mostly for itself. I would just like to add that I am eternally grateful to everyone at the Shanachie Theater for allowing me to be part of it, and especially to Mataya and Ludo for believing in me. Also, to all those who come see our productions, and to my beloved Carina, who is my reason for being."

There's a grief that can't be spoken. There's a pain goes on and on. Empty chairs at empty tables Now my friends are dead and gone.

Here they talked of revolution. Here it was they lit the flame. Here they sang about tomorrow And tomorrow never came.

From the table in the corner They could see a world reborn And they rose with voices ringing And I can hear them now! The very words that they had sung Became their last communion On this lonely barricade at dawn.

Oh my friends, my friends, forgive me That I live and you are gone. There's a grief that can't be spoken. There's a pain goes on and on.

Phantom faces at the windows. Phantom shadows on the floor. Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friends will meet no more.

Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me What your sacrifice was for Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friends will sing no more.

((Here is Michael Ball singing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". And for those who prefer the film version, here's Eddie Redmayne in the same role. Though I prefer Michael Ball's voice, I think Eddie Redmayne's performance is closer to Arandir's than the other.))

Les Miserables "Red and Black" - Enjolras, Marius, and Students, as performed by Josh Stuart, Arandir, and Chorus

Josh's Introduction: "Hi, I'm Josh Stuart, and I'm one of the performers with the Shanachie Theater Company. We mainly do musical theater, and right now, we're performing Les Miserables, a musical based on the novel by Victor Hugo. I play the part of Enjolras, who is the leader of the uprising and Marius' closest friend. This song is sung mainly by myself and Arandir, who plays Marius and who is, by the way, an extraordinary performer. These two young men, who share the same youthful idealism, are at odds with each other over how their goals should be accomplished, with one - Marius - falling in love for the first time, while the other - Enjolras - is ready to sacrifice his life for a cause he believes is true and just. It's a song of friendship and loyalty and passion for a cause that will eventually end in tragedy. The song is called 'Red and Black'. I hope you enjoy it!"

Ben's intro:

Hi, this is Ben Gates! I've been with the Shanachie Theater Company for the past two years. It has been a privilege to fulfill my dreams of being on the stage in front of the great citizens of Rhy'din. I have the honor of playing the lead role of Jean Valjean in the Emmy and Tony award winning musical, Les Miserables. I won't go into too much detail, but I will say that the story of Jean Valjean is an extraordinary tale of the duality of man. Before I go, i want to say a huge thank you to my wife and kids. "Hello to all of you! My name is Eregor T"r Gaird"n, though you can just call me Eregor, and I am happy to be a part of the current production of Les Mis"rables at the Shanachie Theater. This is a fantastic musical with a bit of something for everyone: a bit of humor, a bit of romance, plenty of drama and more deaths than your average Shakespeare tragedy. At its heart, though, I'd say that Les Miz is a powerful story about redemption: those who who earn it, those who deny it, and those who scoff at it.

"I play the role of Inspector Javert, and 'Stars', the song you're about to hear, comes from the middle of Act I. It's a beautifully intense piece, and the caliber of the performers is, I'm sure you know, truly magnificent. It is a real honor to a part of such a wonderful company.

A Streetcar Named Desire is considered to be an American classic. Each character is gloriously complex - I can't tell you too much about them, because I'll spoil the story! It was made into a movie on Earth in 1951, starring Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando, and was one of the first plays of its time to truly incorporate Stanislavski's naturalistic method of acting. For all that it is a sweeping classic, it is a surprisingly intimate play, all about the lies we tell ourselves and others, and how things are not always what they seem to be. I think the main theme that was written for the movie is one of the best jazz pieces I have ever heard, so ....here it is!"

Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation Darkness stirs and wakes imagination Silently the senses abandon their defenses

Slowly, gently night unfurls it's splendor Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender Turn your face away from the garish light of day Turn your thoughts away from cold unfeeling light And listen to the music of the night

Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar And you'll live as you've never lived before

Softly, deftly, music shall caress you hear it, feel it, secretly possess you Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind In this darkness which you know you cannot fight The darkness of the music of the night

Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before Let your soul take you where you long to be Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in To the power of the music that I write The power of the music of the night

You alone can make my song take flight Help me make the music of the night

"Hello! Live at the Shanachie is back with The Phantom of the Opera, running until the 27th of February! I'm Carina Cox, and if you've been paying attention, you'll know I moved from the Repertory Company to the Theater Company over the January break. I've been extremely fortunate to be given the role of Christine in Phantom, and even more fortunate to be allowed to kiss my own husband on stage! All I Ask of You is one of my favorite love songs, and it's amazing to be singing it with a man I really do feel that way about. Anyway, here it is, and I hope you enjoy!"
