As if the sprawling beauty of the Ice Castle wasn't Winterfest-y enough for the Glen, WinterFest On Ice has arrived to make use of the beautiful location for three performances only.
At 2 p.m on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of December, all are welcome to come and watch as thirty professional ice dancers gathered from various different worlds and time periods strut their stuff on the ice, accompanied by volunteers from the Shanachie Theater's band and chorus. Alongside James Dorvil and Christina Tean, a worlds-renowned duo of dancers, can also be found three very special guests ....volunteers from among Rhy'Din's not so dancey masses.
Kicking off with a medley of music from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite to introduce the dancers with an array of stunning tricks and beautiful lines, we move on swiftly to a much-beloved character from Earth's Christmas traditions, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, who will be available throughout the show for the children's entertainment. Following this comes a special treat in the form of Rhiannon Brock and companions as they perform to a medley of Jingle Bells, Sleigh Ride, and The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, evoking the sense of expectation that the season always brings with it.
Moving on, and you'll be pleased to note that despite the fact that Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - performed by a very sprightly Edna Folkston (84) - Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, led by Dorvil and Tean in a sleigh built entirely from candy, which will be distributed randomly throughout the performance by Santa and Rudolph. Another special guest, Rori Dunn of Stars End Spacers, makes her appearance with the female chorus in the next medley, Santa Baby/'Zat You, Santa Claus", offering a slightly more adult view of the season with a display that will either make you wince or cheer. Possibly both.
With a slight change of pace, we are treated to the incredible partnership that is Dorvil and Tean as they wend their way about the ice to an acapella arrangement of Judy Garland's classic Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, before being rousted from the ice by the raucous stylings of the male chorus to Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree. Our third special guest makes his appearance for Frosty the Snowman, though hardly in a manner that allows him to recognised. Nevertheless, let it be said that Frosty himself has a certain West End Wargs/Granger-y look about him.
The professionals return under the watchful eyes of Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty to give us a rousing rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, before separating into couples as Dorvil and Tean rejoin them for the sweetly gentle strains of White Christmas, and once again join in the anticipation brought forth by the wintery jingle of Troika, from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kij". Finally, as a farewell and thank you for attending, the Shanachie performers and ice dancers invite you to come with them as they head off into the New Year, with Here We Come A-Wassailing.
((Any and all interactions with WinterFest On Ice are very welcome to this thread. Please feel free (if you have the time!) to pop a line or several here, or wherever else on the WinterFest threads to show your appreciation for all the hard work put into this festival by Risa and her team by enjoying yourself with it!))
