As if the sprawling beauty of the Ice Castle wasn't Winterfest-y enough for the Glen, WinterFest On Ice has arrived to make use of the beautiful location for three performances only.

At 2 p.m on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of December, all are welcome to come and watch as thirty professional ice dancers gathered from various different worlds and time periods strut their stuff on the ice, accompanied by volunteers from the Shanachie Theater's band and chorus. Alongside James Dorvil and Christina Tean, a worlds-renowned duo of dancers, can also be found three very special guests ....volunteers from among Rhy'Din's not so dancey masses.

Kicking off with a medley of music from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite to introduce the dancers with an array of stunning tricks and beautiful lines, we move on swiftly to a much-beloved character from Earth's Christmas traditions, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, who will be available throughout the show for the children's entertainment. Following this comes a special treat in the form of Rhiannon Brock and companions as they perform to a medley of Jingle Bells, Sleigh Ride, and The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, evoking the sense of expectation that the season always brings with it.

Moving on, and you'll be pleased to note that despite the fact that Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer - performed by a very sprightly Edna Folkston (84) - Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, led by Dorvil and Tean in a sleigh built entirely from candy, which will be distributed randomly throughout the performance by Santa and Rudolph. Another special guest, Rori Dunn of Stars End Spacers, makes her appearance with the female chorus in the next medley, Santa Baby/'Zat You, Santa Claus", offering a slightly more adult view of the season with a display that will either make you wince or cheer. Possibly both.

With a slight change of pace, we are treated to the incredible partnership that is Dorvil and Tean as they wend their way about the ice to an acapella arrangement of Judy Garland's classic Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, before being rousted from the ice by the raucous stylings of the male chorus to Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree. Our third special guest makes his appearance for Frosty the Snowman, though hardly in a manner that allows him to recognised. Nevertheless, let it be said that Frosty himself has a certain West End Wargs/Granger-y look about him.

The professionals return under the watchful eyes of Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty to give us a rousing rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas, before separating into couples as Dorvil and Tean rejoin them for the sweetly gentle strains of White Christmas, and once again join in the anticipation brought forth by the wintery jingle of Troika, from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kij". Finally, as a farewell and thank you for attending, the Shanachie performers and ice dancers invite you to come with them as they head off into the New Year, with Here We Come A-Wassailing.

((Any and all interactions with WinterFest On Ice are very welcome to this thread. Please feel free (if you have the time!) to pop a line or several here, or wherever else on the WinterFest threads to show your appreciation for all the hard work put into this festival by Risa and her team by enjoying yourself with it!))

Rori wasn't the only one that had felt uncomfortable about the skimpy wannabe Santa costumes for Zat You, Santa Claus! Rhi wasn't even in that performance, but kept wondering if the skirts would fly away in a good wind! What a show that would make for her family, especially the brothers, who had come to video the Saturday, 17 December, matinee performance for the family album. Several women in slightly less revealing dresses and tights circled the rink during the performances tossing out candy and other small holiday treats. Wardrobe had even topped off their outfits with a little red elf hat with a jingle bell on the end! They tinkled like crazy every time the women moved their heads! She closed her eyes a moment and pretended it was the clashing of steel. How odd was it that something that would have sent many running for cover was comforting to her" Not odd at all to a girl who had practically grown up in the basement of the Red Dragon.

Rhi and Mitch glided out onto the ice to a catcall of "Go Reezy!" Only one person called her that ....her eldest brother, Ian. Rhi chuckled a little bit when she heard a few other familiar voices in the crowd cheer her on including her mother, Colleen, several more of her siblings and Maggie, her niece. Was there a holler of Tinkerbell from somewhere in the crowd" Sleigh Ride had been jazzy like Ella Fitzgerald's version. It had a style that lent itself well to the dance moves being performed on the ice. Plenty of twirls and quick steps. In the long skirts, the ensemble had to be careful of catching hems in their skates. It was a challenge for those that that never worn such a costume before.

When things were done for the day, the family rounded up Rhiannon for a celebration at home. Later in the evening ....she'd don a ballgown; it'd be the first time she'd wear one in public. A striking off the shoulder blue velvet gown had been in various stages of being fitted over the previous week. At roughly seven months pregnant, Colleen could only crouch for so long and insisted she'd be the one hemming and stitching her daughter's dress. It was going to be an interesting night since the lovely velvet covered shoes were destined to be kicked off once the dancing got in gear!
