Topic: The Ubiquitous OOC

Sid

The WestEnd district has been Sid's home base since she came to RhyDin. Her flat once occupied half the first floor in a Brownstone that was renovated a few years back to become the family dwelling for her, her mate Scottie and their twins. At the center, at the heart of all the neglect that is the WestEnd one might find this Brownstone.

Though I have ideas of what the neighborhood is like, I always wished to open a folder, give the basics of a setting, and hope that others would come along and join in the magic. Helping to populate it, making it live and breathe.

Urban fantasy - especially Bordertown's world and that of Shadowrun - the gritty edginess of Gibson's cyberpunk visions, the noir genre, post-apocalyptic tales, all these hold a fascination with me. Places where hope is cherished and hard won, where there is a beauty to the darkness, to the edge one dances. This neighborhood was envisioned on the basics of such genres.

Please join me in the magic of building this dark pocket of RhyDin. Make up businesses, gangs, families (real, chosen, thrown together), clubs . . . anything, anyone you wish that could be encountered in a forgotten part of the city where those who make it home try to build a life for themselves. Expand upon the local color you find in others" tales, help this place live.

WestEnd is a piece of RhyDin, so, certainly, everyone is invited to post here. Share the magic! I truly hope you will.

These are the setting basics:

WestEnd exists on the border between the Old City (Low Town, the sector of RhyDin where the Red Dragon Inn lies) and Stars End Sector (High Town). A third side of the neighborhood butts up against the Warehouse District that lies just beyond the Docks.

It is a fairly dilapidated section of town. The easternmost peak, a boundary shared with the Old City, is marked by a Clock Tower belonging to Our Lady of Perpetual Misery. The bells of Perp Miz ring out the incorrect time (they've been known to chime fourteen o"clock) from sunset to sunset. Until recent, the sounds on hour and half-hour have been about the only noise in this ramshackle district; its buildings and crumbling store fronts not even worthy of the most desperate squatters.

But that has all begun to change . . .

Something has happened, something has spread out to encompass the whole of this neighborhood and turned it into a kind of dead zone. Word has gotten around that within the boundaries one is "off the radar", so to speak. To tech, magics, psi and otherworldly sight the area doesn't exist, locating anyone or anything within its zone is next to impossible.

Ley lines, manna - things are warped in the WestEnd even more so than the rest of RhyDin. The workings of magics and tech have been known to give twisted results, if they work it all. The spells to hold a location stable fritz out more often in this community than other spots around the city.

Folks and beings have begun to filter in, the disenfranchised of RhyDin are finding being "off the radar" suits their purpose. Whether running from someone or something, conducting business of a nefarious nature, or for those with their own agendas for a place like this and its people the WestEnd has become the spot to go.

Come, have fun!

Under the "Days of Yesterday's Past" heading, the "Life in WestEnd" thread was written and posted from January 2000 to March of 2001 in the old Blood House Onyx board on AOL. The posts were a combination of singular postings and in-room play converted to prose between the players of Miles V Malign, Dalbelborak, Amthyst Oak, Dream Morpheus, Nejarra, ScottieRag and ObsdnShayd (Sid).

A part of this past posting written by Sid (me), titled "And now a word from our sponsors", was actually reworked from a posting I did on the RDI's private posting board way back when we all wore just the "RDI namehere" badge. That would be sometime between '97 (I became a Host in September of that year) and '99.

During the year and some this was written, a few things happened that are just touched upon in these particular postings. One thing that happened was Sid received an anonymous package that subsequently blew up her and Scottie's third floor suite, along with the rest of the floor.

IC, this time, blended with OOC amongst Hosts and most of the regular patrons of the RDI, because this paved the way IC for the building of the Keep which was introduced OOC as the RDI's "advanced" play area when the RDI was moved to the Conference rooms in February of 2001.

Due to the machinations of several RDI patrons at the time the Inn blew up (a totally impulsive play scene on my part), Sid managed to survive, albeit with grievous injuries (I had slated her to die).

During her healing time, the stasis field failed on the embryos she held in check until it was practical (meaning safe) for her to carry children. She delivered 11 months (actual game time) later.

Scottie also took a job during this time as a typesetter and printer for a local paper called the Evening Shroud. And, since the Inn was incapacitated and their brownstone yet to be finished, the last couple months from the blow up until it was completed were spent living in a cabin offered up by a friend and a room at the Bloods' Oak and Ash, just around the bend from WestEnd on the Docks.

I place this all here now because it not only gives a rundown of Sid's home, but it provides clues to her and WestEnd I believe are important. I plan on resurrecting a couple more past threads to let a little light shine onto the character of Sid and the WestEnd neighborhood.

P.S. Somewhere, if I think I'm remembering correctly what I was told by Miles' player, I believe there are actual blueprints for this Brownstone of Sid's.

In the "Within a Private Study - Unexpected Findings" thread now resurrected under the "Days of Yesterday's Past" heading, these were singular posts written by Sid (me) and the player of Long Lankyn, as well as posts of play converted to prose between Sid (me) and the player of Lucien Mal. They were posted on the old Blood House Onyx board on AOL between July and November of 2002.

In the posts titled "Upping the Stakes" and "Battle-Ready" now in the "Days of Yesterday's Past" thread, these were written by Sid (me) and the players of Long Lankyn and LdyBelial.

"Upping the Stakes" appeared previously in the old Blood House Onyx board on AOL, written between July 24 & 25, 2003.

"Battle-Ready" also appeared in the Bloods' old board on AOL, written between December 5, 2003 and February 23, 2004.

Both these postings were placed here in order to give some clue into the evolution of Sid, the powers at play and what might have happened to WestEnd when she cast the protection on herself, her family and their brownstone in that district that was always twisted to begin with.

I have at least one another posting to place in the "Yesterday's Past" thread, if I can find it. It deals with the Brownstone, in particular, which sits at the center of WestEnd and why it might hold a bearing on why this district is the way it is.

In the thread "Of Scottie and Sid..." there will be found instances of mature subject matter, language and sexual situations. These two characters are very much carnal creatures, it is part of their makeup. If this offends, please do not read that thread.

For now, the glimpses into Scottie and Sid's private times are posted in the log format. We claim laziness for this reason. Sorry. ::Chuckles.:: There may come a time, however, when one or both of us will convert a particular log (posting in the thread) to prose. Don't be surprised if you come back to read more and find this has happened.

The characters of Scottie and Sid have been together in a relationship for over nine years, since 1997 (FYI their twins were born in January 2002). We have tons of logs on their play through the years, tons of history. But, for this thread "Of Scottie and Sid...," we are only going to be posting what has transpired between them from when Scottie's player came to DM onwards for simplicity's sake.

The thread "As a Crow flies..." contained the prose format of their first play session after Scottie's player registered here at DM (5/31/06), and the log starting out "Of Scottie and Sid..." is the next play scene in succession (6/11/06). Posts that follow will be play scenes that follow these in sequence.

We do hope you enjoy the read and would love to hear comments or anything you have to say. Please forgive us for our laziness in posting the logs. ::Sheepish grin.::

I wish to express my sadness and condolences on the passing of a friend and fellow roleplayer, Fayalki's player.

Many knew of him as RDI Hunter and its various incarnations throughout AOL's Hosting title changes. He was a kind and giving soul.

His loss in our community will truly be felt.

Fly free and easy now, friend.

Just a little OOC FYI. (Third try is charmed")

In my most recent post in the Monsters, Gods and Demons thread, I posted a scene where Fio's Missy personality led some unnamed people into the Studio. With the exception of two phrases, ("Oh man," and "What it about Michael?"), I have tried to keep my post to only my writing from that particular RP session.

However, it bears mentioning that this was originally an RPed scene, and I do want to mention the other players, because, really, none of us write in a vacuum. So, those also involved in the scene were LuckyDuck, SinjinFai, Mishka, Gemethyst and ChryrieNightstar.

I also want to formally reiterate that if any of the players involved in the general SL, including those not mentioned with respect to this specific scene, want to add to the thread, you are welcome! This thread isn't Fio's diary; it's a supplement to the played SL. So hop on in!

I have nowhere else to put this since I don't journal and I don't really want to send everybody to the dust bowl that is my MySpace page. ::Chuckles.:: The length of this with the links is too long to put in the Away message on AIM. So, I'll just post the link to this posting on there and all is solved.

Some quick notes:

Ashes occurs after Ties That Bind, which you can read back by clicking that fancy link there. All lyrics in Ashes belong to the fabulous Porcupine Tree, and for the moment, it's a closed piece of story. That may change down the line, though.

Thanks!

Scary space monkeys.

All right, I don't know who (if anyone) is following Morana's activities and threads anymore. For those who might be interested, this SL has been going on for quite some time and has grown to massive proportions - and it's not even close to finished yet! Not everything has been edited and posted yet and there are gaps - that is, scenes which have been played but not posted yet. Because this sprawls between at least three boards, I am putting a rough timeline of events which have been posted so far with links to relevant posts here. As the "missing" items are filled in and the storyline carries on, I will update this post, so keep an eye on it!

Warning: several hundred thousand words so far written but not yet posted. Expect to spend a great deal of time reading if you tackle this at once. :)

This storyline touches on and connects to the Bubasti & Vrashne storylines in the West End Eye folder and Sonnet 44 folder, and to a great many of the stories running in the House DeMuer folder. Check them out! Also, many, many thanks go to all the players involved in this undertaking!!
