The com was queued up from the airlock and by the look on some faces it was getting harder and harder not to smile. The pockets of gas lazily drifting through the air in so many shimmering colors. It would have been rather romantic if they were not on a mission to collect gasses and Jack wasn't gearing up for a fight in the background.

"You let go of those! That is right they are attached to my body! What the hell are you doing to my tools!?"

The team of mechanics going with her having a devil of a time keeping a straight face most of all.

"Miss Jaquilene. I am only....Ahhhh!"

Clong!

That might have been a tool she had strapped to her brandished in a manner fitting El Cabong.

"Don't call me that! I swear I would do this myself if he wasn't sending you....you.....I can't even come up with a word to describe how ridiculous this is." Jack rubbed her temples the space suit only half on.

Hunter had to work hard not to react to what he was hearing."Someone had left the coms open and he was being given the pleasure of hearing every word."

"Is everything all right back there?""

It took no time at all for silence to ensue. Everyone was looking at the winged engineer like it was her fault they were getting yelled at."He never said anything else, his voice never raised yet the crew always thought he was being harsh.

"Everything is fine so long as they quit trying to shove me into this contraption and touch my tools."

Sighing more for the people around her than her own personal need. Jack started again.

"Sorry...sorry. We will be under way in 5 minutes. And the name is Jack."

Glaring at the one who had dared to use her full name. After much fussing and barking orders, the few who had been assigned to her quickly moved about. Jack kept her orders simple. All they had to do was make sure nothing floated away and do the basic repairs to the ship. She would handle the gas collection.

The touch of a smirk at her remarks ghosted over the admiral's features. Hunter found her fascinating to observe. If only he were Vulcan to truly appreciate it."

"Right then, on your mark Jack we will begin decompression of the airlock."

"He wondered what she looked like in that EVA suit, and then chided himself over it. That quirky little grin seemed to have made a residence on his face.?Best to get rid of that thing. He lowered his brows trying to force it away. The ensign at the flight control panel looked back turned pale and faced her station once again.

They took their places in the airlock as Jack had told them hours before hand. Once they floated out of the airlock on her mark everyone had a job to do and there would be no screw ups! Jack hated it when things went wrong for her and she intended to make this mission go as smooth as possible. Tugging on the suit one last time, it hugged her so tightly and smashed her wings to her back. It would only take a couple of hours for them to start cramping and aching. For a brief moment her mind wandered to the idea of building a hot tub of some sort with the excess power from her modified engines, but that would have to wait. Glowing green eyes closed for a moment as everything played out. The list of gasses, names, places, projects and the time frame, it was like a clock started in her head as soon as the words drifted out from between her lips. "Mark, repair and collection team good to go."

On her mark the air was removed from the room and the doorway opened into space. Hunter watched the crew heading out. This would be the first mission where the new engineer was personally involved. There seemed to be a bit of an adjustment issue going on between the juniors and her. He remembered how difficult it could be to have people not trust you implicitly. "Engineer Absinthe has the ball. Command control reverting to her on my mark." As the last of the crew exited the ship. He called it off. "Mark! Start countdown clock"

Jack was off. Her head set a buzz with replies to her questions as she swam more or less through space to get to the gas clouds. A belt of collection jars around her waist. Her voice didn't show it and in the suit it was hard to see her face, but this whole ordeal was a touch unnerving. Working in gravity was one thing, but in space......Her arms flailed and feet kicked like a kid splashing in the pool. Her body twisting and turning till she caught sight of the others using their propulsion packs. Well at least that would get her closer than all this flailing. Wait a sec! "Crap...." she mumbled and wiggled head to toe trying to flail about closer to the gas cloud. Can't use the pack or it will ignite the gas and it was suddenly clear that she had never learned to swim.

There were snickers coming from the bridge as they watched what was happening out there.?"Hunter stood and went to the view screen.

"Engineer Absinthe have you ever worked with an EVA suit?"

The question answered its self soon."Hunter nodded and looked over at the bridge crew knowing each of them had a similar experience.

"There is a targeting computer on your belt.?"It is laser guided."It will calculate the distance you need to travel and give the appropriate propulsion to get you there.?"

He stood looking at the figure trying to swim through space.

"I have never been in this blasted death trap, but are you seriously trying to blow me up?"

Jack spun back as if she could see him in this conversation and spun around a few times.

"Ugh. I am surrounded by gas. If I use the propulsion you will no longer have an engineer. Go ahead laugh. I know I must look, well I don't know and to be honest I don't care. Ahaha! Made it!"

Arms flailing in giant circles to slow her down so she could start collecting from this particular pocket of gas. Her body in the EVA suit highlighted by the golden gas.

"You should be able to switch thrust types on your HUD."Non ignition is often a necessity out there."Think of it like a co2 fire extinguisher.?"

Hunter looked towards his ready room willing to talk her through the exercise in there except that she needed command on the bridge for parts of this mission.

"It should be a red display button that can be easily switched...do you see it?"A"heavy sigh over his shoulder was quashed immediately.

"Yes, I do see it and last time I checked I wasn't color blind. However I want these samples of gas contaminated as little as possible. Sorry, but swimming seems the better option at the moment so just relax and enjoy the show."

Chuckling as the first canister was returned to her hips.

"Check in. What is your status Starting with the thruster panels."

At least a 3 minute spread of calls came over the system to Jack giving her time to swim to the next gas.

"Copy that. Bridge please confirm all locations. You are drifting slightly towards us, but it is minimal currently. Might be wise to have corrective actions on standby. Do you copy?"

Across her coms came the voice of the girl at helm control.

"Aye ma'am compensating, port thrusters engaging to compensate for drift. All crew outside the ship brace for thrust maneuver. Three two one Mark!?""

From the outside of the ship they could see a series of thrusters turn on briefly then turn back off.??Most understood that a similar procedure would happen on the opposite side to stop drift in that direction as well.

"Well done and thank you! Samples 2 of 7 collected. Estimated time of return currently is one hour. Please compensate the current air allotted with spare tanks for swap out. Hey now! I heard that sigh! One hour is doable if you quit staring at the backside of the woman next to you! Don't make me get the wrench!" It was a good thing the poor boy was in the EVA suit or everyone would have seen those scarlet cheeks. "Strike that at least another hour and a half if I have to keep correcting the horn dog over there."

There was a fit of laughter on the bridge then. Lacha's laugh was nearly infectious. Hunter simply stared at the screen controlling his breathing or risking snorting all over the place. In the background he heard Lacha engage the computer. "Call sign change computer. Ensign Troxus' call sign is now Horndog..." The decidedly feminine voice of the computer cut across the deck. Acknowledged. Hunter just shook his head, his own call sign had been Iceburg. He had asked if it was because there was more buried beneath the surface than above. He was informed it was because under fire he was one cold mother. The operations station rang out next. Synchronized oxygen swap out in ten nine...The numbers descended and there was a flurry of activity . "Mark!" The word hit them all at the same moment. As one they expelled their empty tanks and inserted the new ones. Hunter gave a nod of approval. "Nicely done "

"Why thank you, chief." Jack chuckled and swam over to her 6th collection. "Well done team, even you Horndog. Still tempted to hit you upside the head though." Crossing her arms to show her disapproval from above you could watch the poor man shrink. "I'll tell you what guys if we can wrap this up in the next ten minutes we will have a little fun with our spare oxygen. Do we have a deal" Agree on check in go!" The echoes of okays flooded her com in cool order. "Well you guys at command might want to pop some popcorn or ready to bust a gut laughing. Mark in ten minutes let the fun begin." Cackling as she swam for her final collection.

Hunter stepped back from the screen when she called him chief. No one laughed at that, probably because he was in the room at the time. He too was having issues not laughing like a banshee but only a few would be able to tell that by looking at him. Lacha snorted then and Hunter had to go to his ready room. The door swung shut behind him and he collapsed onto the couch burying his face in his hands. His laughs were smothered by whatever he could find. When he regained his composure he rejoined the crew, and took up his spot once again looking for the entire world as though nothing had happened. The time in the room gave the bridge crew a needed break from him as well. Finally they laughed at the chief.

"Alright time is up! All of those who have been dragged out with me on this craziness, here are the rules. Call out that you are done in the order we have been checking in. Quickly return my tools or there will be hell to pay and by that I mean you will learn to build a hot tub from scrap for me. No, I am not kidding. Starting us off, Engineer Jack Absinthe mission complete. All 7 gasses collected. Mark!"

The calls came flying through with a few snickers, but it was all good news. They were ahead of schedule. Jack swam closer as they finished the last call.

"Okay we have earned it so here we go. Computer! Start program wiggles on my mark. For the rest of you just roll with it. Computer mark!"

Music flooded the system and of course Jack didn't leave out the bridge for all their hard work.

Laughter poured out as bodies wiggled and flipped in the air. Jack herself was trying out spinning and dancing in space. A younger crew member yanked on her tether bringing her into the group. Soon she was swept up in dancing. Even Horndog seemed to quit staring at backsides and joined in the fun. Jack found herself swept up and passed from young gent to gent dancing in space. Her laughter spilled through the com. Even aching from the time cramped in the suit she was having a blast.

He listened and watched saying nothing realizing that someday it was better to let them make faces behind him."In this case it was dancing at their stations. It was hard to tell who had the better station. Those seated saw the one standing and wished they were standing because it looked so much better than chair dancing."The juniors standing wished they were seated because....their feet hurt they would have gladly switched and simply chair danced."Hunter turned back towards his ready room.

"You have the bridge Lacha.?"

He took up a position behind his desk and turned on the monitor to watch the crew dance in space."He was looking specifically at one of them.?Her song choice was apropos.

The next track came on and Jack was still filled with laughter. "Alright guys let's head back in or shall I say dance in. Bridge enjoy the last track and we will account for ourselves once it's over. Job's well done! Couldn't have done it without you." The mood seemed so much lighter than when they had started. Each of them spinning, dancing, flipping and wiggling their way into the air lock. The last notes of the song lingered in the air as Jack's voice came through. "All bodies accounted for and jobs. Returning control of the bridge to Admiral K'lar. Thank you, Chief. The data will be in momentarily. You...." Glowing green eyes narrowed. "Why is my magnetic self adjusting wrench....." The com cut off before everyone lost it again. Needless to say Horndog was soon put to work building Jack a hot tub.

He watched them all the way in, he kept the monitor on the group, seeing the morale raise quite a bit on the bridge as well as down in engineering, except for Eight of course because she didn't know any better. He clicked off the connection as the airlock closed and the oxygen was pumped in. "This trip is going to be something very interesting Miss Absinthe." That the coms were closed spoke to his gut feeling trusting that where his facts were wrong he would be informed.

Hunter sent a message to Lacha that he was going back to his quarters, but would be available if he were needed. The route to the turbo lift was on the same wall as his ready room. He gave instructions to the lift to let him off at the crew deck. He passed by the new engineer and gave a nod to those returning and to one in particular.
