Order Meets Chaos

While Alchemy house was being built based on her designs back on Rhy'din, there was a whole new universe of problems for her to fix. When the offical letter from fleet had arrived with her assignement, it had taken her hours not to chuckle and grin at the mear thought of going.

She couldn't sleep about this new assignment, but then again Jack was use to only 3 to 5 hours of sleep a night. Well if you can't sleep then you get to work!

Managing to ....make friends with the computer she had let herself on board the star ship in the middle of the night. Dragged all her tools and setting them up just the way she wanted it. Cherry coke had failed her around 4 am so like any crazy woman, she switched to coffee.

The uniform that had been made for her to wear just wasn't going to happen. Already covered in only what an engineer could figure out, Jack kept working. Those glowing green eyes had picked their first project based on computer archive records about the ship, it's captian, crew and other ships that had been in the general areas they were going to.

4 A.M. and H.K. was running through the ships corridors taking that route he always took. The crew knew by now to leave them empty because there was too much saluting and posturing when the "Admiral" ran by. He wasn't a strict task master, but he did expect discipline from the crew. In many ways it could mean the difference between survival and winding up in the vacuum of space.

The gray sweat suit already had that wet v down its front working up its most curious scent of B.O. Rounding the corner made the stern features of his chiseled face change. Finding it odd that there was a lab not only open, but the lights on at this hour without his knowledge about it was more than enough reason to scowl. This definitely needed to be investigated, just in case something was going wrong.

H.K considered calling security, but if it was nothing then he would have ended his run for the day indefinitely not to mention all the paperwork to follow. He hit the bell on the door, taking note of the indentations and scuff marks leading to it. Waiting for someone to respond being the most painful part of his run thus far.

"It's open!"

Yelling at the door without even looking. If someone was stupid enough to come in at this time, then that was their own fault. Scraps of metal were already tossed about the floor. Screens flashing data and constantly updating with new information.Curled up on her back under the main control panel to the warp drive in the midst of this chaos was Jack. Black leather combat boots wiggled to the tune hard hitting base of a rock song in her head. The standard issue uniform pants sticking out, but the arms curiously tied around her waist.

Among the data flashing on the screens a few words of concern could be noted. First the warp drive being off line, Second, not only was the operating systems for the drive being downloaded, but updated. Last and not least was tactical data for officer eyes only being downloaded and encrypted.

Oh this was going to be so good and only her first day on board!

It had been some time since the last infusion of graduating and interning ensigns, but still he didn't recognize the voice yelling at him through the doors. Most incoming fleet had extensive personnel files that include voice sampling, medical transcripts, and even final wishes and it was the Admiral's duty to go over every bit of it. Intrusively diplomatic was the nice way of putting it. He palmed the door's release and stepped through as it shushed open, and closed behind him. H.K gave a tilt headed look at the combat booted feet sticking out from beneath the control panel. Even with the massive treads they were still rather,...small. Ice blue eyes took in the scraps on the floor and then went back to the person beneath the control panel. And just who was taking his ship a part. At this hour in the morning no less! "I hope the bridge was informed that propulsion was going to be offline for a while." He straightened, clasping hands behind his back as he waited for the early bird to show itself more.

"I left a posted note. Well more like I programmed the computer to show one with my hand writing until I'm done, which is right about....hahahah! Now!"

Cranking one last time on her wrench, the last bolt was in place. Flush and meeting more than just fleet standards on safety and malfunction situations, Jack had improved what was considered standard.

"Oh, I can't wait to test out the modifications!"

Tossing the wrench out from under the control panel, Jack wiggled herself free from the tight space. Well at least half of the uniform was on. The upper part tied around her waist by the sleeves. Black tank top covering and letting her wings breath. Long black hair pulled back into a messy ponytail. Smatters of greases pocked her skin and face.

"Who are you and what do you want?'

Glowing green eyes merely glancing with tactical like notation of him, then reaching for her now cold cup of coffee. He seemed easy enough to read, but without a proper uniform there was no telling rank or job.

He knelt down to see beneath the console. His view was obstructed of course but he might be able to pull off acting like he could see. A quick look was all that could be managed as she slid out. "You aren't doing routine maintenance?" Now the gaze followed her. Nothing seemed familiar about her features to bring up a personnel file. Let alone wings and glowing green eyes. Must be something to do with a compound she had gotten into under there or under any of this scrap. Perhaps calling for a decontamination of the engineering deck was in order. "I am Admiral Hunter K'lar and this is my ship." He stood now to his full six foot height. The long topknot braided for his physical training. Instinctively tugging on the bottom of his running suit as if it where is flight jacket. "Who may I ask..." While she leaned over the console a grayscale tattoo on her shoulder peeked out from under the tank top. The fine detail and craftsmanship bring back the file he had only had a brief moment to thumb through before his run. "You weren't due for hours Miss Absinthe. Your welcoming party will be sorely upset." There was a mischievous glint to his eye. His mind already taking mental notes on his new crew member.

"Alright then, nice to meet you."

Making a faces similar to an old man bitter beer face at her first sip of the now cold and awful coffee. Looking at him as if he had three heads. Holding out the cup of coffee at arms length like some infectious stink bomb. Nose all wrinkled up making her features more narrow.

" No, I didn't do general maintenance. Your warp drive was not going to meet the demands that you put yourself and this crew through so I fixed it. Well brought it up to experimental date so to speak and for the love of grease don't call me that! The name is Jack. Plain, and easy to say. No one has to try hard. Just call me Jack. And yeah, I don't care about a welcome party. They just get in the way. I had to set everything up and well I couldn't sleep, but that is besides the point."

Waving her free hand in general directions, she moved to an opening in the wall where the replicator hid.

"Reheat please. Add vanilla bourbon sugar too."

The mug soon to have little wisps of steam rising up to greet Jack's nose.

He nodded thoughtfully as she spoke about the modification to the ships engines. He would need to have the helm test the new settings. The smallest upturn to the left corner of his mouth appeared as she practically commanded him to call her Jack. "Right, then...Jack it shall be. The crew tends to call me sir, or Admiral...but you are a civilian and therefore not bound by those rules. Most of my peers call me H.K. though I don't know that I need to hear that anymore than I already do." He shook his head thinking that over. Was he rambling like some love struck school boy"!" "I suppose you may call me Hunter." He tugged at the waist of his sweatshirt; as though he expected to find something else there than what he was wearing. Scolding himself all the while for a brief laps in control. "Tell me about these modifications, unless I am interrupting your work."

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-15 23:18 EST
" Hunter it is then."

Smirking over the rim of her mug. Tall, brooding and complex. At least he would never be boring she mused.

"The work is done. Been at it since about 11pm. After I highjacked the computer to let me in and created my own passwords instead of waiting on fleet, which let's face it, they take forever on the most simple of issues, but anyway....I started going over the archives."

Tapping the screen it obeyed her motions without needing to be touched from then on. Another modification to fit Jack's needs.

"Went through the ships basic design, the crew, you, past encounters, and what other ships ran into in similar areas we might be heading. Based on the data, I ran a probability application. We stand a fairly decent chance at running into Klingon, your basic idiots, but what bothered me is the increased sighting in borg. This ship cannot out run a cube. Period. Well until now."

Waving her hand the screen flashed the hand drawn design then taking the basics of the blueprint into a 3d model. "A normal warp drive is a graduated cone to increase the speed of particles, thus creating a gradual wrap. Which is fine if you are trying to out run your grandmother, but I created a panelled warp drive. Thus allowing us to increase our speed and time. Say warp 8 in 3 to 5 seconds instead of the standard 20 to 30. Give or take Chaos, mind you."

H.K.

"Tell me about these modifications, unless I am interrupting your work."

He stood a pace behind her and to the left, reading over her shoulder as she flew through the screens on the monitor. Then a look to the model, he tapped a few controls on the workstation in front of himself and called up a holographic view of the warp engine that were standard on this class ship. He used a hand to move this over her 3D model, and took interest in the changes. In the back of his mind, H.K couldn't stop laughing. Did she honestly admit to high jacking the computer systems" This was going to be trouble...in the best way possible. "You moved the intake out here yes" And the exhaust ports are slightly more constricted...More pressure, greater thrust?"

Now he moved around the other side of the model, he could see her in his lean over the desk, but his mind was now gone to the technical schematics. There were subtle changed caused by either physical modifications or programming additions. Simple designs with complex execution.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-15 23:29 EST
"And before you go whining about increased pressure causing excess heat, I took care of that."

Spinning the model and expanding beyond the main warp core to see the standard pipes, but the coding laid into their primary functions was changed.

"It was a basic computer program issue, but now that excess heat is transferred into several areas conserving power. The greenhouse, medical bay and a few other areas that normally are heated by use of the power system."

Grinning from ear to ear proud, Jack turned away from the model. Wings flickering in triumph.Another project accomplished......until testing.

"Take your time with it."

Sipping her coffee as she started to clean up the mess on the floor. Scattered without rhyme or reason was her tools and metal shavings. Some of the tools clearly her own design.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-15 23:35 EST
A long finger pointed to another place where the model no longer matched the hologram. "What is this here" A second expansion chamber?" It was a guess, but in truth he had no idea what this modification was meant for. He looked directly at her when she mentioned more power to those areas. Stiffening slightly in disbelief for a moment. "You increased the auxiliary' Fantastic, we normally had to throw batteries in place to get more power. Can we still do that I wonder" Auxiliary to the structural integrity?" His tone was practiced and she could probably see the tactical thoughts rolling across his face. More power off the engines meant less diverted during battle. The possibilities of what could be done were now a very very long list.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-15 23:38 EST
"Now you are catching on. This second expansion chamber is a massive battery. As the engine is used and the panels placed according to the needed speed, any excess power that is normally lost in transition is captured, converted and stored. So far I have the chamber set up to hold enough power to support the ship for at least a week running what is deemed the basics, but I figured if I tinker with it in between projects I might be able to squeak out a month. Once again give or take chaos."

Man was a fast learner, even if only the basics caught his attention. Jack had no problems translating her work into analogies. Hell there were days she barely grasped what she was working on. In the back of her mind the classic image of a white haired mad scientist cackling, "It's alive!?.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-15 23:43 EST
"Hmm...that being the case I believe Eight needs to put in heavier phaser relays. I would hate to burn them out because they weren't designed to handle the power." He put an elbow on the desk and laid his chin on his palm. There was so much detail written in the coding it could make anyones eyes cross. "This design should be published, there are cruisers out there bleeding power because of inefficient engines. Not taking into account the rest of the ship should be over hauled." He pushed the com button and with no hesitation for the hour laid out his thoughts into commands. "Admiral to the Bridge." Go ahead Admiral, came the reply. "Set a course for the Bomari system, maximum warp. " Aye Aye, sir." He stood and looked at her a moment. Trying to recall the snippets of information from her file for conversation. "Are you familiar with the Great Bloom?"

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-15 23:45 EST
"The Great what?"

Jack didn't have time to think. The ship launched forward instead of the normal smooth transition. The mug of coffee shattered on the wall of her lab as she tumbled back. Glowing green eyes burning bright as she slammed into the wall.

"I should have mentioned that."

Growling as she rubbed what were sure to be bruises in the morning. Wait it was morning. Arg! Her mind tried to grasp anything that might lead her to hazard a guess at what the great bloom was. The crew of the ship including them would take a minute or two in adjusting to the new forces of the engines.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-15 23:48 EST
He grabbed hold of the desk as the ship jumped. "It seems this modification is going to set off a series of them...Perhaps the inertial dampeners next?" Again the twinkle in his eye. So he had picked something she didn't know. Now it was his turn drive the conversation. "The Great Bloom. The system is packed with Metreon Gas. It forms into pockets and makes the system resemble a large flower. Of course it is also quite volatile so the word bloom has two meanings there. I believe your projects list stated something about needing some of the gas for your experiments...or did I misread that?"

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-15 23:53 EST
"Well we weren't suppose to head out for a couple more hours and to add to that I hadn't planned on needing max warp for a while."

Eyes narrowing at him. It was on the to do list! Then again if he saw her list she might be dragged out of this lab in a straight jacket.

"Yes, I do need that gas for no less than 5 of the experiments I am suppose to run, but I am scheduled to work on the shields first am I not?"

Smirk returning with her quip. Jack peeled herself from the wall and marched with percision back to her controls.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-16 00:03 EST
When those dampeners finally caught up to the forward momentum of the ship he began a diagnostic recording of energy output levels on the warp core. "It's four in the morning, about time everyone was rudely awakened. I haven't knocked so many ensigns from their racks since boot. "He didn't consider that she wouldn't know the terminology, instead he just continued on. "The shields are important, especially once we get to the Bomari system. We currently have a truce with the Klingons, but they still consider that system to be within their empire. Then there is the possibility that the impulse engine touches off one of those pockets. It has been known to start a chain reaction that has crippled ships."

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-16 00:06 EST
"So then it might be a wise idea to reduce the warp so I can get to work on it."

Shaking her head a few strands of black hair came free to frame the high cheek bones of her face.Tension clearly visible in the way she held her neck and back.

"Which means I will need more coffee."

Rolling her left shoulder and wiping some of the grease one of her tattoos became clear. A scroll work of thorns all connected to a single blooming rose that encircled her arm.

"You need up cup?"

Heading over to the replicator in the wall to command more coffee.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-16 00:10 EST
He tapped the screen a few times switching into the astrometrics screen and showing her the route they would be taking.

"We have time even at max warp...I figure to let it go for a few hours while that diagnostic runs its course. We'll need to slow down eventually because I have a team scheduled to affect some repairs on the deflector dish. A couple of servos were damaged in our last encounter. If you are feeling adventurous, you could go along. The EVA suit isn't that complicated." Although he was curious how she would managed to get those wings in of hers. The EVA suit was never exactly designed for them.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-16 00:19 EST
"And you are talking about me creating a shielding system from scratch. The current system can only manage so much and to build something into and on top of is just pointless. I will build a shield that can meet all the needs and then some for this ship, but...." Jack yawned and her wings twitched. One arm stretching back towards him while waiting on the replicator to finish. "At the moment, I have to clean this place up so I have room to draw on the floor again."

Tapping it with her boot the floor lit up blue like an old school drafting sheet.Little white guide lines racing along like pin stripes.

"You have any questions for me?" Her hand was soon wrapped around another cup of coffee. Savoring the smell.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-16 00:22 EST
There were many, but they didn't pertain to the jobs at hand. "What do you need out of the crew? I could send a team to assist you in your efforts. Eight is..." he struggled for a word to describe the liberated borg. "Efficient...if a touch dry to talk to." He loved her to death but she just lacked certain understanding of things. She made him look positively jovial.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-16 00:23 EST
"Why would I want 8 people in here" This space is barely enough for me depending on the project."

Waving a her free hand at him as she knelt on the floor. Lips pursed in thought as to where the first line should go.

"No trust me. I am better on my own. By the way, where are my living quarters" For that matter the rest of the ship?"

Jack might have just made a beeline for her lab. Missing out on seeing the rest of the ship altogether.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-16 00:26 EST
That upturned left mouth corner was at it again. He considered her for a moment, her dark hair such a contrast to that pale skin. "Eight is one person...Head of operations. She was liberated recently and refuses to take a name yet.

Jeceko is also efficient, but he tends to lapse into Saurian when he works. If you know the language he is rather humorous. At least it seems so when I see him talking to other Suarians. Have you considered using the holodecks to test your theories?"

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-16 00:27 EST
"Why would I use a holodeck" It is just a waste of time. By the time I have the holodeck programmed to play the data and build my model accordingly I could have already built the damn thing and been ready for a test run. Although....."

Returning to the subject of Eight stopped her thoughts. "Well I can understand being picky, but Eight?"

Jack sipped at her coffee and started to draw.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-16 00:31 EST
He was nodding at her question. "Eight of Eight, there were seven others in her adjunct. I don't know if they survived or not. Eight came to us last year, she finally decided to wear the uniform over her implants." He wasn't sure why he was giving such details out. He stopped himself short at the thought of saying anything else without getting to know her better first. Or at least get a chance to her her personel file. "What were you saying about the test runs?"

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-16 00:35 EST
"That they are better performed live than in a holodeck. A holodeck cannot account for chaos and as such is useless to me."

Jack didn't even look up at Hunter as she continued to map out what was playing in her head so vividly. Detail after detail poured forth onto the floor as her hair spilled out from the ponytail onto her shoulders and neck. Focus so sharp it might have created tension in the room for those of a faint heart.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-30 23:25 EST
"If I told you that I managed to acquire a Borg console...what would you say...hypothetically speaking of course." He watched her with interest as she built a puzzle on the laboratory floor. H.K had been keeping it a secert for so long. Surely someone with her blunt honesty would see beyond the fact that it was borg and what it could mean scientifically. "And what would you say if...hypothetically I wanted to adapt it to this ship?" Hypothetical's were always so fun...His brow was furrowed slightly as he waited for her to jump down his throat over it.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-30 23:28 EST
"Non hypothetically speaking, where did this borg console go and what was it's primary function' I would rather like to adapt it to the shield and background operations systems instead of learning basic maintenance. The toilet habits of a borg hold no interest for me."

Not even flinching she continued to draw away. Stepping back only to make sure she had done the layering right and the base of the code. One hand groping for a cup of coffee that was just out of reach on the work bench.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-30 23:31 EST
He slid the cup to her, and then squatted to look at what she had written on the floor. "It's in the cargo bay in box consumeables. As to its function, it seems to have been integrated into several of them. Power flow, and shield modulation. I think were its primary uses. There is some question about its affect on deflector abilities. It would be nice if it could increase accuracy on those cannons." He gave a shrug when he finished because it was all supposition. "I have had to work on it infrequently due to the current mentality on borg technology.?

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-30 23:36 EST
"Tech is tech. Doesn't matter who came up with it, all in how you use it."

Sipping at the coffee and not looking back as if she had grabbed it herself. Spread all over the floor was a complex map of systems and math. One layered over top of the other to form a dense armor that could be turned on and off at will. In theory that is. Jack tapped her foot on the floor to have her draft saved.

"What are you waiting for? If you want me to start work on it then we have to go get it. Just tell them it is part of my things and I need it brought to the lab asap."

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-30 23:41 EST
He had been hoping to turn the borg devices against them. "There is always the possibility that it could attempt to assimilate the ship. Hang on a second, I will get it here." Once again he stood and thumbed the com button. "Transporter room' Get a lock on crate 42179 and beam it directly to my location." Aye sir! toned over the speaker, then in the far corner of the lab particles began to congregate and form. Eventually the box was whole and solid, and yes the word consumable was misspelled. That made it easy for him to find when he had time to work on it.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-30 23:43 EST
"Nah, you just have to do a little sweet talking and keep it isolated from major systems till you hack it."

Scampering over to the crate, long slender fingers covered in grease traced the lip of the lid. Excitement building over a project that could span months.

"Thanks by the way. I'm not good at lying when I'm excited over something."

Smiling brightly, her fingers curled under the edge and pulled back the lid.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-30 23:46 EST
The top was swung back on hinges to reveal the assimilated borg module. It was not conected to any power source, but it still had a faint glow. "I found a transmission device inside it and for a period of three or four days we kept encountering probes and spheres. It stopped when I managed to disable it. I haven't figured out what it is using for power though." Her smile seemed to light her face up, he was almost embarrassed that he had seen it, like a private moment not meant for him. Strange though he was determined to make it happen again if he could. H.K had stopped looking at the device to watch her as she got more animated. What would she create out of this, the possibilities were staggering.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-30 23:48 EST
"To hell if I know what it was drawing power from. Need to take it a part for that, plus why didn't you just scan to find the frequency it was using and block it' Would have given you data on what it likes to operate on."

Jack looked at him as if that was suppose to be common sense for anyone. She stopped combing the console when Hunter stood still and stared at her. What had she done now! Looking up at him she kept her smile.

"How soon do you want a break down of it?"

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-30 23:53 EST
"Hmm?" He shook his head to clear it of distraction. Or at least distort the image that was the source of his distraction. "Oh well...sometimes I like to get my hands dirty I'm sure you understand that. I had hoped to turn the signal against them change the message to make them stay away, but I ran out of time. It was necessary to disable it instead." He cleared his throat and tried not to look guilty for staring...pokerface. "As to the rest, as far as I am concerned it came aboard with your things...You should know what you brought with you....hypothetically." He couldn't help, but give a small laugh, and turned away going back to the monitor and checking up on the data recorded. "Power levels increased by a factor of 3 in some systems."

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-30 23:56 EST
"Oh, I see how it is. Let the engineer take the scolding while it proves its uses all the while my wrist gets slapped. That will cost you a cherry coke or two."

Crossing her arms to stare him down and to bark out her own orders. This was her lab after all...

"Computer. Please block all communications that are not person to person on this ship. Analyze whatever you find as extra and show me the data and variance."

Jack was ready to dive in, but another yawn came creeping out of her. Rolling her shoulders back to keep her focus and maybe win a cherry coke or two our of the Admiral.

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-30 23:59 EST
He looked at the chronometer on the screen of the workstation. It cycled between the current time of the ship, military time and of the nearby planets while listing the name underneath the time. "Has it been three hours already?" He turned to the woman with the arms across her chest. Black and brown marks on her face, smatterings of only she would know what over her hands. It was almost like seeing the victor of mud pit fight only grease. "You must be starving, I know I could use a little something. Care to accompany me to the mess hall?"

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-31 00:04 EST
"I..."

A low growl came from her stomach that sounded more like a half starved wild animal. Placing one hand on her chest the burble made its way to the back of her throat. Maybe she had over done it on the coffee this time. Out of her mouth came this high pitched noise. A cross between a squeak and a belch.

"I think that is a pretty clear yes."

Sighing at her own body giving in just as the work was getting started. Not to mention she hated the sound of it. No matter how she tried to stiffle it that blasted noise was still loud!

"Where is it?"

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-31 00:07 EST
"Deck three in the forward compartment...those big cruisers tend to have it on deck ten. If I had it on deck ten it would be on the outside of the ship." It was a joke, but told straight faced as though he didn't really understand how to tell a joke. If only there were crickets in space to follow up that monstrosity. Quickly change the subject! "Do you want to go on ahead of me or would you mind stopping at my quarters so I can change?" He closed his eyes and shook his head. Wow, O for two in how to phrase things. Suddenly H.K's mind flashed to horny high school kids who ended every other word with like or uhm. "Wait that sounded very inappropriate..."

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-31 00:08 EST
"You look fine. Let's just go."

Jack didn't skip a beat. Taking hold of his wrist and heading out of the lab. The door slammed shut behind her as a cold voice replied.

"Codes active. All points must be active for access."

Smirking she trudged off in the wrong direction. She really saw nothing wrong with how he looked. After all she was only half in uniform, covered in grease marks, black under her nails and hair a complete mess compared to the women in the halls and their neat buns and such. Food was food. Why make it more complicated by dressing up for something that was going to come out of you in a couple of hours?

H.K.

Date: 2013-10-31 00:12 EST
He let himself be led from the room, the corridor was more active now than it had been three hours ago it could have something to do with that sudden jerk that had the crew up and about. The two marched along the wrong way to cries of Admiral on Deck! And scampering junior officers started saluting. That he wasn't in uniform drew more looks than he wanted to even consider. ?There is a turbo lift just up on the left Jack." He pointed to the symbol that stood out from the wall above another of those sliding doors.

Mechanist Heart

Date: 2013-10-31 00:17 EST
Left...no wait her other left. Back handing the lift button, she glanced around at all the faces staring back at them. What' So her eyes glowed a violent shade of green and she had wings. What were they....oh...Jack let go of Hunter's wrist.

"Sorry. I just get ahead of myself sometimes."

Staring at the lift doors without another word. It didn't take Jack long to shrug off embarrassment.

"Did I even go the right way?"

Putting all strangeness of this moment on herself. She might go off the deep end once and a while, but that didn't mean she didn't know how to recover or at least try.

He sighed with relief as they entered the lift and the doors closed. "No, but this way will get us there too. Besides it will give us more time to get to know eachother." He pointed his thumb at the closing doors of the lift and all the crew members scurrying about like newly hatched turtles on the beach. Awkward and there was no chance for cover. "That is why I try to keep to my schedule. I don't usually do that to the crew, unless it is time for their inspections."

Jack leaned against the back wall of the lift and chuckled. Booted feet crossed in a relaxed pose.

"You are the one who decided to stay and ask questions. This is your ship, I am just her to make it better."

That smirk on her face like a cat who had the perfect plan to steal the catnip.

"So why are you blaming me for your own choices?"

"Deck Three", The lift began to move like an express elevator, but even that hadn't compared to the quick jump to warp. "I wouldn't have stayed and asked questions if your work hadn't been so engrossing. Am I to blame for having a curious mind?" His lips twitched as he tried to fight off a smirk of his own. "You might say I was trapped by your brilliance."

"Well it is your mind after all."

Continuing to tease him with that smirk plastered on her face.

"What is that I smell?"

Pushing herself off the back wall as the doors opened. Flooded by the noise of the mess hall it slowed to murmers.

"A corny line"

Tossed back at him as she sauntered into the room. Hips swaying of their own accord to a march. Boots creating a steady beat along the floor. A fair share of eyes staring at Jack giving Hunter an escape or a quick way to slide in. Wings fluttering as she leaned on the bar portion.

He followed her on out, ice blue eyes looking straight ahead with no outward indication that he was checking out the swaying hips in his peripheral. The babble of the people at tables slowed and stopped as the pair made their way to the replicators. H.K. didn't say a word, he just pretended that he didn't see all of them. Most were uncertain what to do, after all he wasn't exactly in uniform. As the moments ticked by and he didn't reprimand the talking was resumed, but more subdued. Yes a lot of eyes were on them.

"You sure know how to attract a crowd, Jack."

"Ah, just wait till I blow something up. Then they will want nothing to do with me."

Laughter pouring from her lips with a husky edge. Jack's feature's turned soft and warm as she placed her order. Confident that she was herself and what everyone else thought didn't matter. Someone had to do the work and if that meant she was an outsider for it then fine.

"Thank you again. Hunter."

Picking up her tray, she headed for an empty table away from the rest.

He ordered a couple breakfast burritos and black coffee, a Columbian blend, and followed her to that table. He enjoyed the sound of that laugh, strange that he even thought about it though. Was it her direct nature or that she wasn't one of his crew and therefore he didn't have to act the same with her. The latter he assumed, he had much the same reaction to Mark and Thrawn. "The pleasure is all mine, though this place would have been covered on the tour that came with the welcoming party." He couldn't hold the smirk this time. Returning fire for all her remarks earlier.

Oh she would get him back for that later, but for now, she would enjoy breakfast or late lunch as it were. A bowl of cereal, toast and orange juice. Jack happily munched away while giving him that smirking look. This was going to work out rather well.

Some high pitched tittering drew a look from him. The lieutenant who was looking at their table turned very white and suddenly found the contents of her plate to be very intriguing. "So how did you manage to get pulled for this duty Jack? The request came from some high places." He suspected there was an ambassador or two involved, but said nothing. Taking more care to look over the details in the seals would tell him later if she wouldn't. He watched her over the rim of his coffee mug. A buzz with curiosity as to what she might do next.

"I wanted something to do while I waited on a house to be build to my specs. Should take at least 4 years to get all the wiring done right and I left someone to keep me updated too."

Jack turned to look at the woman watching them. Wings fluttering and making now attempt to hide the fact that she was staring back. What was that about'

"I rather like a challenge so I threw my hat into the ring to come here. That a problem?"

A problem' Not so far as he could tell, he couldn't remember enjoying his morning run this much in a long time. "Well no, of course it isn't. I must admit that when I was told that you were coming I was hesitant. I don't always take well to being volunteered for things, but in this case I am happy to be wrong. Welcome aboard if I haven't said it already." He considered that and came to the conclusion he hadn't. "Perhaps you would like to take the nickel tour with me later after I am off?"

"Glad to be here and that will depend on what I am engrossed in. The tour that...."

Jack's green eyes glanced a crossed the room at one of the machines against the wall to replicate food. Slight tilt of her head as if she were listening to something.

"Sh@%! Get down!"

Tossing the table between them and tackling Hunter the floor, just at the replicator close to them burst in a shower of sparks. Scrambling over and off of him, Jack raced to the machine. Quickly yanking out wires and flipping switches.

The little engineer was rather solid for all her size, that and he had definately not expected to be tackled by his breakfast companion. There might be a foot print or two on his PT outfit, not that this was a problem. He sat up and watched her go to work on the malfunctioning replicator. Wondering why it chose now to go all screwball...was the ship itself against him having a good time? The crew worked quickly together in an emergency. Halon fire extinguishers were passed forwards and sprayed at the sparking menace. H.K. picked himself up off of the floor, brushing away the imprints of Jack's shoes. "It's a conspiracy...it must be." He murmured to himself, but there was a distinct upturn to his lips as he said it. "I swear the Unimatrix is falling apart."

In about 5 minutes flat, Jack had cut the infernal machine away from the main power supply and at least figured the problem out, but the crew had other plans for her. Pushing her way from the machine and pointing to her hands.

"What?"

Jack fussed back at them. Her fingers, palms and wrists pocked with burns.

"Fine, you figure it out."

Eyes narrowing at the crew members on her way back to the turned over table. "You okay?"

Looking over Hunter. She wasn't good at these things. Hell she was standing there with electrical burns on her body and not even flinching.

"Me" I'm fine, I had been meaning to get you to takle me all morning." Another joke without the right inflections. This time though it was concern over the malfunction. "Something is going very wrong with this ship...I hope those guys out there are being extra cautious with that deflector." That was one thing he couldn't just replicate. "How long before we can get a handle on these malfunctions Jack?" It wasn't her job of course but he was hoping she had an estimate.

"This would take me 10 minutes to fix it if they would just let me get near it again."

Glancing back with a huff at the crew.

"It was just old and needed a regulator replaced."

Holding the burned out piece in her hand. Jack stopped for a second to catch his humor. Starting to chuckle herself.

"Well if you would pay more attention when I am talking things wouldn't malfunction, but then there goes me tackling you."

Jack laughed and started to shove her way back to the machine.

He let her struggle for a moment or two before sounding off. Make a hole!" Bodies parted like the red sea before Jack. He tossed a small wink in her direction and set to righting that table. Pity about the coffee, and the breakfast, but he hadn't really been eating anyway.

The machine was fixed as promised. Proved by bringing back a new breakfast on a tray.

"Now, where were we?"

Smiling with wrapped hands. The crew might have parted like the red sea, but they still fussed over her burns. Jack on the other hand didn't care. She was enjoying the banter and interest in her strange sort of humor. "So when do you have to go, Hunter?"

One of the male crew members stopped dead in his tracks when she spoke his name so freely. Looking between her and him.

Eye dart in the crew member's direction started him walking again, but he was too stubborn not to stare. the only thing that stopped him was just about running into another of the crew. H.K. turned back to Jack. "I should have been gone some time ago, but I was doing my duties as host. Besides it is good to be in charge sometimes." He looked towards the exit and then back to her.

"Are you going to be alright on your own?"

He half hoped she would say no, but somehow he knew better.

"I think I can manage. You know where to find me."

Jack picked up her breakfast and headed for the lift. Not wanting to stay with everyone staring at her, plus there was more work to be done. Turning to flick the gaping crew member on her way, Jack looked back and smiled. It was good to know that she wasn't alone in her insanity here.

He watched until the lift doors closed, then he made his way to the corridors again heading for crew quarters and a fresh uniform. H.K would make a point to stop by and check on her later. He was sure there were any number of things that he could find that might distract the dark haired glowing green eyed engineer.
