"Good morning, class, and welcome to General Literature," says the scarf-bedecked alien as he slinks on in. Late, of course, but what do you expect' He's always got his theoretical nose stuffed practically everywhere.

"Now let me make this perfectly clear," he says as chalk is taken up and he proceeds to write on the board. "I will not take attendance. You may attend or skip whenever you please. However, this wouldn't be much of a class without grades. So if you show up, I expect you to be prepared to discuss the text we are focusing on. You will be required to submit an essay, minimum three pages, typed, double-spaced, with your name on it, for every text you choose to participate on. You will pass this class if you submit three satisfactory argumentative essays that use your research in connection with textual evidence to define and support what you think the text means.

"This is not a reading class. This is a discussion group, and without argument, there can be no discussion. At your desks, you will find copies of the student agreement to tolerance. I guarantee, in this class, we will be discussing issues that some might find....uncomfortable. You are more than entitled to not participate in such sensitive subjects. I expect all of you to read that document thoroughly and submit it to me with your signed name by the end of class."

Students will find, when looking at the document, that it is basically a sworn oath to objectivity and conduct becoming of scholars, and that any attempt to steal another's work, or promote intolerance, will result in automatic expulsion from the class.

(Let this be a notice to the community as well. I know my fragile reputation here, but I encourage anybody who sees something wrong with the way the discussion is going to just PM me and request the discussion be taken in a different direction. This class/topic is meant to spark the mind of both player and character, and the agreement in character is as much an agreement out of character....myself included.)
