A simple leather-bound book, but within are sturdy clips that allow new pages to be added in. The book is old, and Roran is not the first owner of it....but as the previous pages are written in the A'Taran language, they're unreadable by most...

This will be my first entry in the Hooman tongue known as "Common", or "Anglish". I have written since my youth, but my kaa'tha has gently hinted to me that it might be nice if our little one can one day read these things for herself without having to translate. She has helped me with it on occasion, for though I have studied the hooman tongues and writing script for some years now, I sometimes run into things that make no sense.

Slang, for example. I still get a headache trying to figure out some of that.

I have many things I wish to say, but it is sometimes hard to bring them onto the page. I often find this strange, as my life's work has been studying the writings and tales of other cultures....yet I have difficulty in distilling my own thoughts into writing.

(Note to myself: Ask how a phrase involving making alcoholic drinks came to be used for a metaphor for writing. I think that one will give me another headache.)
