A Tale of Three Cities

The planet of Baaja consisted of three main cities, each on their own separate continent. The capitol city of Draylon was run as a democracy. Its main purpose was developing laws and determining justice, guiding the other cities in a managerial role. Orias was the religious city, grounding its faith in scientific principals. It served as the educational city, run by spiritual leaders and councils, as the other cities became reliant on its technology and resource gathering capabilities. The city of Toron was run as a dictatorship and trained the strongest fighters, offering law enforcement and defensive support to the other cities.

When working together, the cities of Baaja could accomplish great things, each focusing on their specialties. Outside sources saw the potential of the planet, and became determined to turn the cities against each other and destroy the very principles that held the cities together. They knew this task rested in the hands of one man.

A holy man was imprisoned for his beliefs to reject the scientific society and return to a simpler way of life. He dedicated his life to adhering to a spiritual belief based in restoring nature to its former glory on the planet. Charismatic and risking his freedom, nothing would stop him from voicing his beliefs. He developed a devoted following. Once imprisoned, that following was at risk of being destroyed.

Two people, bent on Baaja's downfall, rescued the holy man and aided him in continuing to spread his good word. His devoted following would soon grow out of his control.

This is that story.

Chapter One: A Purse Full of Trouble

Zora had been watching the military base for quite awhile.

She had successfully infiltrated the base several times to learn more government secrets she could use against them with minor acts of sabotage.

Today was a day like every other and the shapeshifter easily walked onto the base appearing as an employee. Once inside, she would use her liquid form to enter through certain vents and other less public avenues, until she reached a specific commander's office. She had been watching him for awhile and would need a little more evidence against him, evidence she had hoped to gain by going home with him. She looked around and saw a small coin bag he had left on his desk. It appeared to be tossed there, half open and a few coins falling out, onto the table. She knew he would be taking his coin bag home with him tonight, but until then she would take her place with the other coins directly on his desk, hoping to be front and center to view all of his back door dealings.

The box he carried wasn't large, the first one had taken a hover cart to transport. He had planned it that way, knowing the search process would be long and involved. Corrim Duvek, Commodity Trader extraordinaire was very good at picking up the odd item that might make him just a little bit of coin on the side. He had met Mursor at a bar one evening, introduced by mutual friends. The man had confided his love of games, and an eye for rarities. Duvek was more than happy to keep an open eye for such things. The building loomed before him, it seemed everyone in Toron was in the military. History told of a time that the women were kept out but there was a war that had depleted the forces to the point of abandoning such rules. He looked up at the barracks of the military police with a smile for the soldiers descending the stairs.

He stood at the metal detector staring across at the two men in military police uniforms. He pulled a smile onto his features, an act that was difficult for him once. Mr. Duvek was what they all called him even though he piloted the ship that had brought him to the port city. Even the title captain wasn't quite the same as Gul. That title was long gone though. Ten years ago he was young for a Gul commanding his own small fleet of ships on the front lines. That wasn't really his purpose though.

In his hands he held a very special Stones Board, made from Parisethian Mandrake wood. A rare piece and one he knew that Commander Mursor would want. He had been here every day for the past week with different items he was sure the commander would appreciate and perhaps purchase. He hadn't had much success with that, though this was not his purpose either.

The board had cost a small fortune, and was the one piece he knew would be taken. The rest were merely ploys that allowed him to become a familiar face. The Tal'Shiar financed their operatives well. It was a small pity that Duvek was not part of that clandestine group. The Obsidian Order expected its operatives to actually be what their cover was.

Whispered Words

Duvek was earning his living as a commodities broker, and a man who acquires rarities. How fitting since the greatest rarity could be information. Lucrative as well, unless you were reporting to 'The Order'. They tended to expect that precious commodity. His rank in the Cardassian Fleet was earned, there was even a commendation in his record. He had shot and killed a wounded subordinate who was jeopardizing the mission.

That incident could have gone a different way if he hadn't managed to pull a victory out at the Numari Weapons Lab. Prison would have been the place he lived now. Of course if he hadn't managed to erase all knowledge of the Lab Commanders involvement with The Order, then he would not be here at all. The Order didn't take failure well at all.

Duvek's time running back and forth between his ship and the base had rewarded him with information. Like Bertrand's inability to resist a Stohlani Coffee from Gretta's Coffee House. He handed that to Bert and gave him that conspiratorial grin. "Your money is no good with me Bert...now if you want to give me a shot at that ensign I saw you with the other night..." He gave a chuckling laugh.

Morty Thrace was a different story, Duvek had discovered the man was more fond of other men than women. He gave him a good natured wave. Mort, that invitation over to my cousins is still open. You know the place up on Tarvin's ridge, the one with the iron gateway in the shape of a Grishawk?" Mort's cheeks colored a little and Duvek moved in for the kill. "Oh...I see, did they treat you well" I did tell them you were a close friend."

It was difficult to smile in the faces of these pink skinned pigs and pretend he didn't hate them all. To spew pleasantries when and debase himself before them. It was necessary though to get what he needed. To be above reproach in their eyes. Duvek understood his job very well, When first he entered The Order, he had aimed towards assassination. Until he realized that it was mostly prisoners' work. He grew bored quickly with the mundane subtleties and transferred into intelligence.

Everything ran on knowledge, and he enjoyed the challenge of gaining it without the victim knowing what he had become. Duvek offered up the box for the guards to inspect. They had seen a number of similar objects come through with him, each time they inspected a little less closely. Trust was important in his trade. This time he was not disappointed when they failed to do more than glance at the object and send him on his way.

The fisher device lay beneath the board. It would download the contents of Mursor's computer without setting off alarms. The board would be purchased and Mr. Duvek would have no more reason to show up at the base.

Bertrand waved him through taking a sip from that drink and giving him a thumbs up sign. Duvek took the now familiar path to Mursor's office. Specialist Jentai gave him a polite nod before bowing her head to her workstation and promptly ignoring him. Corrim knocked lightly on the door waving through the window with a disarmingly congenial smile. Mursor curled a finger at him and indicated the seat across from him. He turned and pulled a crystal decanter from the shelf as Duvek entered and sat.

Duvek saw Mursor's eyes caress the box he carried. A glass of green liquid was poured for Duvek and handed across. "Mr. Duvek...so nice to see you again. What have you for me today?" Corrim smiled so brightly that his eyes nearly shone. "Now commander I have told you many times it is Duvek, simply Duvek. I do have something for you though that I think might finally break that losing streak I have with you."

The box went onto the desk, and the top came away in Mursor's hands. Corrim moved quickly to retrieve the board, palming the device inconspicuously as he lifted the wooden thing out. "Parisethian Mandrake wood...I don't think I have seen quality like this outside of the museum at Orias...you need this in your collection Commander."

Zora watched as someone sat with the commander. It was the Cardie, at least that's what they called him. Mr. Duvek. She had taken slight notice of him whenever she saw him, only because his race was so much different than those she had seen before. He was different, but they seemed to tolerate him coming in and out of the base, much more than the tolerance she had ever been shown.

The hand holding the device came away and slipped it into a pocket turning it on as he did. Mursor was distracted by the pointing fingers on the other hand. "There is some slight surface damage here but that will actually increase the value of the board over time." He could feel the thing hum to life against his leg. Twenty seven seconds, that was what he needed. He had timed it several times and that was the longest it had taken to break his best encryptions.

Mursor took a drink from his glass and leaned over the piece. "Nice try my friend but I fear that mark will never increase the value of the piece. In fact it decreases it by at least 15 Danar." The blue eyed commander looked up at Duvek in triumph. Corrim put a hand to his chest and looked shocked. "Oh...my dear commander...15 Danar" You will break a poor trader. Why that would cut my profit to nil. It would barely be a finders fee. I couldn't possibly take off more than 6 Danar."

The price he had quoted had been heavily inflated to begin with. 15 Danar was nothing off the top of it really. The commander liked to haggle though and Corrim needed time to get as much as he could. He watched Mursor sit back and consider the board. "I would hate to break you my friend. I can't do six though...Ten would be more than fair for such vast damage."

Duvek sat down slowly hands going to the arms of the chair. He held that look of shock for a while before speaking again. "My dear commander...I have been to the museum at Orias and know that they value this thing at nearly double what I am charging you...but if you could agree to a discount of seven and...a half Danar" I would happily give it over to you just to have the space in my hold."

This Cardie seemed to know a lot more than he appeared. Not much got by Zora, who had dedicated her life to watching these humanoids and she enjoyed watching the slight of hand and negotiation techniques by Mr. Duvek. She listened intently to their discussion and began to realize that if the commander purchased the piece, her plan may not go as well as she had imagined, but this Cardassian might just be a better target than the commander.

Mursor picked up his glass again took a mouthful and set the glass on the desk. He gave it a quarter turn looking down and staring intently at the ring left on the wood. "Seven and half...you are a heartless charlatan Duvek, but you have a deal." Corrim could see that Mursor could barely hold his glee thinking he had out haggled him. In his head he was counting, the encryptions were long since beaten he was sure, but would he have what he had come for" He needed to stall until he felt the heat in his pocket subside. "Excellent Commander Mursor. I assume you will need time to get the cash together?" Hoped was more like it.

Mursor shook his head slightly. "When you told me what you had come by I brought in what I would need. The discount will allow me to have a drink later tonight." Corrim smiled though he was thinking furiously for a way to extend his visit. "That is excellent commander. Perhaps a celebratory drink?" Mursor was opening the bag and pulling coins free. The clicked loudly to the desk, or was that simply Corrim's apprehension at the turn of events"

Mursor handed the pouch across to Corrim and refreshed his drink. "That sounds like a great idea." Corrim smiled with that soft amiable movement of his lips. "Perhaps there is something else you might be in the market for" I have a trade run coming to Draylon in the next few weeks?" He lifted the glass and took a slow sip. The pouch went into the pocket at his chest. He could feel his heart beating against the newly added weight.

Inside the pouch, inside his pocket, she waited. She was a people watcher by heart. She could sit for hours on end and just wait. But even she would need to escape from his gasp at some point to rest herself and recharge. Duvek managed another fifteen minutes with the commander listening to the man go on about the games he had played as a child.

Corrim entered his ship. He had modified it so that he could spend days on the ship without needing to leave. He dropped the coin pouch to his night stand and moved off toward the bridge. It had the fastest computers on the ship and he was unsure how much time he had. He opened up a hidden panel and initiated a scrambling device before starting a transmission. "I have what you require...I am uploading it now."

When the bag she was in had been dropped down and she heard the footsteps leave the room and the door close behind him, she slowly oozed out from the bag. Once she saw that she was alone, she transformed into her humanoid appearance she enjoyed the most. A young woman in her twenties, about five and a half feet tall, with ivory skin and black hair cut in layers that seemed as if she couldn't make out the desired length of her hair, but it was still long enough to cover half of her back. It was tied back into a loose ponytail with the layers cascading around her. She wore a simple outfit, plain black shirt with black pants. Her clothes were tight against her, mimicking the silhouette of her body, like another skin. She looked around the room and tried to get her bearing or where she was exactly.

Tones from the console before him as fingers flew across the keys. The bone ridges on his hands looked as though they would slow his progress but they had no real diminishing effect. The face on the screen was decidedly Cardassian as well. Duvek didn't recognize the man. That wasn't unusual though. He looked down at the information sent. Another screen came alive next to Corrim. "Excellent work. On the screen you will see a caravan route that will take place in three days. You are to liberate the goods being transported. This is coming from the highest levels of the order...so...Failure isn't an option for you Duvek. No mistakes, and don't get caught!" Corrim offered that same smile that had disarmed Mursor. "Of course...have I ever let the order down?" He could wonder what Tain was after with the caravan but to ask would mean death.

Zora carefully made her way outside and around, quickly determining her place on what she had assumed was a ship. This definitely was not working out as she had intended. She made her way to the bridge and stayed out of sight when she heard people speaking. She was happy to find Mr. Duvek's back towards her. She silently entered the bridge in time to hear the order for the caravan. Maybe things were looking up after all.

Shifting Eyes

The figure on the screen punched a few buttons and the conversation ended abruptly. They weren't telling him how to manage the job. That told him many things, first and foremost that they didn't care so long as he didn't get caught. Duvek was already coming up with ideas. A shadow passed across the console, it was small and would have been missed if he hadn't been in a heightened state of caution already. "Did you know, that the Cardassian's evolved from the Geltac lizard" The most interesting thing about that is the lizard had the ability to sense vibrations. This included the air itself. Now I am not sure who you are but...I do know that you weren't here when I opened the seals on the ship." He spoke loudly a slow movement of his hand as he reached for anything he could call a weapon.

Zora froze as she realized he sensed her. She saw him move slightly and she spoke defiantly, "If you wish to pick up that caravan, I'm sure you will need someone with my skills." She began walking back slowly towards the exit in case she needed to make a quick getaway.

He hadn't expected to hear a female voice. It was true that they were just as capable of killing as any man. More so in some cases, he decided to tread lightly. "You have an interest in this caravan?" He reached up to shut down the monitor that mapped the route. Then he made a slow turn and looked up at her. He wondered who had put her on him, and when he would have to kill her or be killed. "Whom do you work for?"

As he turned around, she stopped her slow retreat and instead began walking slowly towards him in soft, confident steps as if she had been walking into the room the whole time. "I have an interest in many things, all of which include the downfall of the city of Toran." She hated much more than just that one city, but she only wanted to tell him what he needed to know. She continued, stopping a few feet from him and standing in a comfortable laid back stance, "It is not important who I work for if our goals are the same. You need someone who could easily get on your ship as I have done.? She only ever worked alone, but she realized she needed his information just as much as he needed her abilities.

Shifting Eyes

Duvek couldn't tell if she were unnerved at her position. That spoke of training and he would be a fool to simply trust her. Except that he could use a bit of help on this. "I am simply a low level operative. I honestly couldn't tell you what the goals of the organization are. I do have an idea though that will perhaps appeal to you." He smiled that practiced disarming smile at her. "We can perhaps find a way to work together." He studied her face hard so that he would recognize her if she were to try to come at him disguised. Perhaps The Order was keeping tabs on him.

Luckily for her, her face rarely showed emotion. Even her eyes were almost reflective in their vacancy. She instead relied on her body language and voice to convey her intentions, things that could easily be manipulated. She raised both her hands towards her face and cupped them around each other, resting her chin on them. "I'm listening."

Corrim stood slowly watching her as he moved. There was a hidden cache on the wall near the ready room. His hands went behind his back and he actually turned his on her. His laced fingers would be visible to her as he proceeded to pace moving forward and then turning back to her. "Well, I am at a bit of a disadvantage...There aren't many Cardassian's on the planet. I need faces...faces that match the natives of this rock. I think a few exotic weapon types as well." He was beginning to form a plan within that plan. "What can I get out of you?"

She said blankly, "Well, it seems I specialize in my native face. I can get into many places, you see." She paused, letting her achievement sink in. "As far as weapons go, I typically have no use for them, so I do not keep them around, but I can handle one decently enough.?

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-05-20 17:19 EST
Did he detect menace in her voice" A threat at how well she handled weapons. That she could kill him with her bare hands. He would tread lightly and smile pretty for her. "You do have a certain advantage in looks over me. That will prove useful. The issue will be when to strike. We have to find their weak points." He continued his pacing getting closer and closer to the hidden cache. "Go ahead and turn on the monitor my dear...perhaps you can tell me where the terrain is best suited to an ambush."

Zora did not like how he continued to pace back and forth. She knew he was excellent at providing distractions. But she was equally versed in her own skills. "Sure?" As he turned his back to her to turn around, she quickly reverted back to her liquid state and hid underneath a panel close to her.

His fingers hit the catch and the compartment opened. The disruptor inside was grasped and he turned to confront her. His eyes scanned the room for her but clearly she was gone. He held to the weapon not trusting his eyes anymore. Clearly she was someone's trained assassin to appear and disappear so easily. "This will be something that bears looking into Corrim...Who do I know that can give me information?"

She listened. Corrim' Was that his name, or someone else's? It made no real difference to her.

The weapon lowered but stayed in his possession. He swept from the room headed for his room and the notes he had in there. Somehow he needed to find the group this woman worked for and eliminate the problem. He couldn't afford to have his shoulder looked over, or worse to have The Order figure out that he was no longer secure.

Him leaving the room provided her with a perfect opportunity. Zora morphed back to her favored persona and began to access the display he was using. She was no engineer, but she knew enough about computer systems to exploit them and sabotage them. Just turning the display back on was enough to pull up the information. She knew the place on the map quite well, knowing much of the city by heart now. She returned the settings to how she found them and carefully exited the bridge. She soon made her way to the transporter and adjusted the settings to return her back to the city. She would be there at the appointed place and time to help his on this valuable mission whether he wanted her there or not.

Chapter Two: Misdirections

Purdy didn't know why he was out here in the middle of the desert transporting whomever was in the back of his transport. That wasn't what he got paid for. The commander knew he was subtle and would remain silent for the right price. The entire unit would do so. He had worked with most of them before on other projects. Most smaller, one or two had been larger. The mine job over in capitol city had been something that required a lot of men. This was just an escort job. He had the coordinates set into the GPS and was following the prescribed route. There were more direct routes, anyone could look at a map and see that. This had all the earmarks of needing to be unseen.

"Don't know who you are or what you did but I don't envy you buddy." He knew it was a male in the back, this much he had seen when he was thrown back there. He could have passed the vehicle in front of him but then he would have its guns to keep him covered. The six wheeled monster had a quadmount fifty caliber on the front of it and another on the back. The guys in the mounts were swiveling the muzzles and taking out a stray bit of wildlife as the saw it. Those guns didn't leave much when they were done.

Purdy wished he had that much action. This driving was quite boring, especially this far out. The radio had stopped working a mile back. There was a second escort behind him, this one found nothing left to shoot at. Purdy could tell as he looked in the side mirrors that the gunner was seriously considering shooting the guy on the first truck.

The roads had gone to dirt then too, Purdy thought it must be some engineer or others joke. Pavement and radio, dirt road nothing. He could still get the trucks around him, that would do little to pass the time. In short he was bored and really wished he had something to do.

Whispered Words

Tarn laid atop the mesa binoculars trained on the three approaching ATV's. He scanned across to the place where the Darten APC was positioned. It was massive and would serve a single purpose. To take out those two heavily armed vehicles. There were back ups as well, a squad of ten men with weapons trained. Tarn was a careful man. He had brought his best sharp shooters to take out those gunners. More time...he watched the vehicles on their slow approach. Tarn hated to wait, he really wished he had something to do. The signal jammers had been placed where the road turned and been crossed an hour ago. Since that moment they had maintained radio silence. The pay off on this had better be as good as promised. He had worked for the man before, and really didn't understand the things he did. He wasn't paid to understand, just to do a job. He would do it.

Zora had obtained the map of the caravan route on Duvek's computer system before escaping off his ship. She analyzed which would be the perfect vantage point from which to conduct her attack and proceeded to move into position, only to find a group of men there, snipers in position, and an armored personnel carrier. Zora continued to move overhead of them and the small desert vulture came to land nearby by ambushing team, but began to pick at the ground as if casually looking for food. She would do all she needed to make sure that the prisoner could be free as a bird.

Purdy saw the gunner in front of him tracking some kind of bird. He couldn't get a real bead on it and still drive. He would end up running smack into the back end of the truck in front of him. He watched the guns swivel slowly could see the intense look on the gunner's face as he licked his lips and made ready to open fire on yet another poor creature that would be little more than a spot on the desert floor.

The bird had flown behind one of the mesas, but the break would certainly reveal it to the gunners and then all bets were off. Purdy counted it off in his head the moment would come soon. "Three...two...one...."

The sound of gunfire echoed but those were not the quad fifties. The rear gunner fell from his mount and hit the front of the vehicle he was driving. The open eyes made the mans condition obvious even if the blood hadn't given him a clue. Everything happened at once then.

Whispered Words

Tarn gave the signal and four men shot as one. He watched the gunners all fall at once. That was all that was necessary for the APC to gun its engines and charge from its hiding place. It took the first ATV in the side sending it careening off the road. The massive red vehicle shoved the smaller one across the sand until it fell over onto its side. Tarn saw the center vehicle spike his breaks and then take of like a shot. The APC slammed into reverse and headed for that vehicle but it was too fast. The big APC, Tarn had dubbed Big Red managed to take the rear vehicle and force it between the two mesa's from where it had emerged. Tarn's men had reacted quickly too, pouring from the opening and moving forward to try and take that center vehicle. The driver was good though and managed to use the mass of the thing to force his way past them. The sounds of two stroke engines broke the air as bikes were kicked into life and chase was taken up.

As she heard the sounds of the shots, instinctually, Zora extended her wings and lifted off the ground quickly, darting quickly overhead, trying to assess the situation. She watched as the vehicles began plowing into each other and men rushed forward and organized chaos broke out. She needed to make sure this was not an assassination attempt on the prisoner. She landed a short distance away from the battle, hidden behind a large section of rock. From behind the rock, a small mouse began to dart among the men, easily escaping detection due to the diversion of the attack. As the driver of the prisoner hit the brakes, she quickly ran under the vehicle. Before he began to speed away, Zora returned to her liquid form and instantly shot up into the vehicle, wrapping herself around the metal underneath. She came to free the prisoner, but now she was just wanted to stick around to ensure his life was safe.

Purdy's foot was on the floor, crushing the accelerator beneath it. The transport engines were whining, but the man couldn't get more speed out of the beast. He settled for trying to knock the riders off their bikes whenever they got close. He had that distinct advantage over them. They however he did not managed to have weapons and were trying hard to take out his tires. He was grateful for the desert terrain now, the dirt road forcing them to bounce and sway. It was making them miss and giving him time to take them out one by one. His lack of envy for the person in the back increased as the truck his an especially large dip and the wheels found themselves airborne.

Each bounce of the vehicle was making her lose her grip and Zora countered by wrapping herself in deeper inside the metal parts. She hunkered down in a small opening inside between the heavy mechanics of the beast.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-05-25 13:17 EST
It seemed the riders were getting desperate. A shot managed to punch through the window. Purdy was lucky not to take a hit. The GPS wasn't quite so lucky though. It sparked and sputtered the voice over repeating that he had reached his destination. The thing wasn't far off, Purdy yanked hard on the wheel and knocked away the last of the rider's, and grabbed the dirt road again. For good measure he ran over the bike to keep it out of the chase. He still gripped the wheel tightly as he drove along the road. The ship ahead had to be it...hard to say with the GPS out of commission but this must be the spot. He spotted dust rising in the distance behind him as he checked the side mirrors. That big APC had joined the chase. Not a huge deal as it was slower than this crate, but he would be stopping here and they would only gain ground then.

Zora saw the shot piercing the metal by her hiding space. She oozed out through the hole and found herself inside the driver's compartment. She extended an appendage and knocked the driver out cold with one hardened blow. His head smacked on the steering wheel and she quickly threw his body into the passenger side seat. If she needed to, she would dump him off somewhere, but right now, she was only trying to protect her precious cargo. She oozed into the driver seat and returned to her humanoid appearance. She continued the route the original driver was focused on. She would play along, but she was prepared to protect the man in the back at any cost.

Corrim stood next to the shuttle watching the vehicle approach quickly. Others would say he planned too much. That he should have just taken the man in the ambush. Corrim didn't like putting a face to himself. He would work from the shadow because it would ensure that he could continue to work. If his face became too well known, then he would be in real trouble. There would be one driver, he would of course be the only one to see Corrim, even Tarn didn't know as much. Corrim always paid by electronic transfer. He supposed there was nothing for it but to kill the driver and leave evidence of another. Ugly work to be so blatantly obvious, but when in need. He hoped that Tarn's men were able to do what he had asked. Take out that gps and keep the driver confused enough to not notice that he was five miles from his intended stop.

Shifting Eyes

Zora pulled up to the shuttle. She waited before getting out making sure as to not give away her position too soon. If Mr. Duvek had planned that ambush to get the prisoner, he was not as good as she had assumed.

Corrim moved forward feigning a look of concern at the fact that the truck had arrived alone. That it was all shot up. "I wasn't expecting you quite so soon...what happened to the escort' You didn't...." Corrim stopped his act as he recognized Zora. "You are not the driver of this vehicle. You are neither tall, nor a man." He revealed his hand as he slipped his weapon back into the folds of his loose robe. "Tell me how you came to be driving the truck I spent so much money trying to get here by itself my dear."

Zora smiled brightly when she saw Duvek. Apparently he was much better than she initially expected. She hoped to be quite a surprise, herself, and she wanted to rub it in. "Well, I told you that you would need someone with my talents. You are quite welcome for this special delivery," she said as she opened the door and stepped out from the vehicle, swaying with confidence.

He returned a smile that was meant to be charming as she said 'I told you so'. He supposed he could have found it annoying, but facts made it difficult for him to do anything but be concerned. This was the second time she was where she wasn't supposed to be. He was sure that Tarn was trustworthy, he had done many missions for Corrim. He had not told Tarn who would be waiting at the ship because he wasn't ever going to get that close. "You must be able to read minds the way you anticipate me."

His eyes watched her saunter a moment before he was able to discipline them into place. She moved well. As much as that was nice to look at, it spoke more towards her true purpose which more and more seemed to be keeping an eye on him and eliminating him when he failed. He doubted that was her order yet, or he would be dead already. He followed her to the back of the truck and waited for her to open the doors. He would run a sweep of the ship tonight for listening devices.

Whispered Words

Her eyes softened as she realized his insinuation about her reading minds was an attempt to figure out what skills she possessed. She loved playing this game with him. She knew someone like him fed on information, knowing how to twist it to his advantage. She wasn't going to indulge him with information about her any time soon. She said coyly, "Oh, I'm nothing compared to who we've got behind Door Number One." She proceeded to pose with open arms displaying the back vehicle doors in a proud show. She would let him do the honors of opening his prize.

He moved forward slowly, passing her perhaps a little closer than was absolutely necessary. He couldn't quite pick out what he was thinking. He took a subtle breath as he passed by, perhaps getting a bit of scent would help him in the future. It was hard to determine what was her and what was the desert. Try again later perhaps. The doors came open easily, revealing the prisoner inside. He looked like he hadn't enjoyed his trip. Corrim nearly laughed at the state of him except that his training wouldn't allow for it. Instead he smiled and spoke as though they had just walked into an amusement park and were purchasing tickets. "Welcome to the first day of what I believe will be the rest of your life." He raised a hand to the man who's hands and feet were chained. "If you will step this way...and quickly we can better aid you in finding proper attire and perhaps even better jewelry."

Zora's arrogant demeanor shifted completely as the doors opened. She dropped her arms to a calm stance and her eyes were solely focused on the prisoner. Though she showed no emotion, it was clear she felt no need or desire to put on airs in front of the man. She took a step back, indicating she wanted to give him more than enough space. It almost seemed as though she had a deep respect for this man.

Whispered Words

The man looked up at Corrim with a bit of shock. He had heard there were other species on the planet but rarely had he run into any. "You aren't going to kill me?" Corrim waved the man towards them. "I know how this may look but if I were going to kill you, I wouldn't have gone to the bother of speaking to you. I would simply have done it and moved on. I have a shuttle and we are going to get out of here." In point of fact, Corrim didn't know that he wouldn't be asked to eliminate the man at some point in the future, but for now he was safe. He helped the man from the truck and turned to Zora. "I don't suppose you have a key to these?"

Zora scoffed as if she was insulted by his question. "Of course I have the key." She looked back to the prisoner. She met his eyes, but immediately looked down, as if she was uncomfortable looking at him directly. She bent down and pretended to take a key from a pocket. She held onto the lock on his ankle with one hand, perfectly shielding it from their view as she took her other hand and inserted a small finger inside the mechanism. She molded her finger to match the internal system and the lock popped open easily. She repeated the same for his other ankle lock. Both restraints fell to the floor. She stood up and focused her gaze on his wrists. She continued her same strategy and soon all four were removed. She went to take off the wrist restraints, one in each hand. As she did she could not help but delicately touch along his arms, wrists, and hands as she gently pulled them off of him. Her eyes looked up and met his for a moment, but she quickly returned her focus to the restraints and back away from him, placing them on the floor as well.

He watched the way she treated him as though he would break if touched too hard. The sight of it making him grind his teeth. "My dear if you were so concerned about his health and well being why indeed did you bounce him halfway across the desert." He didn't look at her as he said it, just stepped away turning his back to them both. "Are you coming with m...us this time or are you planning another disappearing act' Perhaps you need me to transport you some place far away from...us?" Corrim looked off in the direction that her course would have taken her trying to determine if they had grown suspicious or not. "Whatever you decide...do so quickly because time is a luxury we no longer have."

Shifting Eyes

She looked to the prisoner with wide, embarrassed eyes. Still staring at him she tried to respond to Duvek, "No, I um?" She turned back to Duvek, realizing she was losing her edge over him in her fascination with the prisoner. She said confidently, "I will be coming along. It's only clear how much you need my help."

He was glad he wasn't facing them because his eyes went wide at the comment. Corrim wasn't sure how he felt about her coming along. It was a shock to say the least. At least if she did he would be able to keep a close eye on her, perhaps find a way to turn the tables when she finally went after him. "I suppose there is something to what you say...You both may call me Duvek. Now get on board so we can get out of here before the real ship decides to figure out what is taking so long." He ducked through the entrance and headed for the pilots chair. He opened communications, voice only. "Break off Tarn, the package has been delivered and the money is being diverted to your account....now." He closed the comms and looked back to see if the pair had found a seat.

Zora would still call him Mr. Duvek just because when the men she overheard on the military base called him that, it seemed to bother him. She would wait for the prisoner to head in first, allowing him to pick his seat. She would select one near him.

The door slid closed and sealed, Corrim's fingers flew across the console. The shuttle lifted and sped off into the atmosphere and then beyond. "You know, it might have been easier to just transport you out of the truck, but that would leave evidence behind. The kind that leads to the wrong places." Namely him, and that was something he wouldn't allow. He couldn't help that prickly feeling at having put his back to an assassin. One did what he had to in order to divert attention though.

Let her believe he trusted her for now.

Corrim didn't show the effort it took to bring the shuttle in low and put it down infront of the safe house. He also acted as though getting the man inside and into the only bed was much more difficult than he really found it. Corrim hadn't expected to have Zora on the trip though. This place wasn't set up for three, it would barely support two. Still having someone to look after the prisoner....Corrim couldn't see him as anything else yet....would make things simpler. He was on his way back into the little place with what food supplies he had on the shuttle to stock the place. "This is what I can give....the cases in the hold have to stay there. I suppose I could give you one of the less rare bottles. I think I have a 67 that won't be missed much." He looked to Zora as he handed her supplies. "The medical kit is over there. We don't have a lot of time...what else do you think you will need?"

Zora would follow behind closely as Corrim would help Durai into the safe house and into the bed. She would quickly inspect the surroundings of each room as she looked around on her way. She looked up as Corrim addressed her, and took the supplies he offered. "I'm not really sure." There was hesitancy in her voice, which was unusual for her normally confident tone. She wasn't completely sure of what humanoids needed.

He nodded to her keeping his face level and his tone light. "I don't expect he will be much trouble at first. Keep him hydrated...they don't tend to give prisoners nearly enough to drink." He looked off to the room that held Durai and then back to Zora. Why did he suddenly feel strange about leaving" "Right...I will bring back what I can soon...will you be okay without me?" Did he need to tell her about what he was going into' Perhaps if she asked.

Her smugness returned and she responded, "Of course I'll be fine without you. I can handle everything on my own.? She quickly turned and went to get Durai something to drink. She could do this, she told herself.

He watched her move away, the sway of her hair had his eyes. He watched the stray ends catch in the breeze of her passage until she was out of sight before turning and heading to the shuttle. He didn't know why he was lingering, if it had just been Durai he would be gone already. The engines powered up and he lifted away, staying low for a long while before angling steeply to attract attention of any patrols.

Corrim Duvek stayed low over the trees as he piloted his shuttle out into the shipping lanes. He banked hard, pointing the nose of the shuttle towards the sky and speeding upwards. Everything was a game now wasn't it' The duo he left behind on the surface were just pieces moving to his whims. His opponent was the faceless governments that ran the cities below. He would play his game, and let them play theirs. The subtleties of the moves were important to him. This was what he excelled at, fooling people, men women even children if the need was there. It had been proven that it took a very shrewd mind to best him long ago.

He received the communications as he was about to break orbit. It was not unexpected, in point of fact he wanted them to come to him. He continued on long enough to avoid the risk of being pulled back to the planets surface. Two Toron policemen beamed aboard his shuttle and began to inspect his log book. "Have I done something wrong officers?" Duvek smiled politely filling his voice with a syrupy smarm that always proved very effective.

"Routine check." One of the officers reported as the other was reading down the list of items. That one turned to Corrim. "You ain't carrying much"coulda just beamed it all to your ship." A gloved finger tapped the data pad, while its owner looked menacing.

Duvek regarded the man astonished. "Normally I would be inclined to agree with you, it would have saved me quite a lot of time and effort. However, that list of wines all has one thing in common. Take the 39 Kanar"it isn't suited to transport beam, the molecular separation taints the blend and causes it to turn into the most awful vinegar you have ever tasted." He moved over closer to the officer with the data pad and pointed a finger at another listing. "The 74 Rock Wine is well suited to transport, in fact it actually becomes better because of it, but this is a 93, the ninety three was made during a time when the great boycott occurred. The winemakers couldn't get the binding agents they used for previous years. Rare to find a 93 that hasn't been through a transport beam?"

The officers eyes began to roll with every word coming out of Duvek's mouth. He jerked his head at his partner who moved further into the shuttle. "I don't suppose you mind if we open the crates?" There was no waiting for an answer from Corrim.

Whispered Words

The Cardassian smiled for them and bowed passively. "Oh, by all means, be my guest"I'll even show you the 93 and the blank transport card. It took me hours to verify that it was actually the card for the bottle and that it wasn't altered." He watched as the lids came away from the crates to reveal cubby holes filled with bottles of different types. One of the officers pulled a green bottle containing a green liquid.

"Ah..the Romulan Ale"I was very surprised to find that here of all places, what with the difficulties over trade rights"Will you be confiscating that?" Concern laced his features as he looked at the officers. The bottle went back into the crate and the lid was slid back in place.

The two officers looked at one another. The first shook his head, and the second stepped away from the merchandise. "No time to take it back and file a report"get it off the planet and out of here before I change my mind!" The two men tapped devices strapped to their wrists and beamed off the shuttle. Duvek looked from the cases to the view screen and his passive smile became something more secretive. He wasted no time piloting the shuttle away towards his ship. He even exceeded orbital speed slightly to make it look as though he were more nervous than he really was. It really would take a shrewd mind to beat him at this game.

The shuttle bay was a small part of the ship. Few would ever know how much effort he had gone through to assure that he had exactly what he needed to pull off this job. Everything he said about his cargo was truth, and Duvek had spent days combing through the city looking for the right vintages to the correct bottles. He had made himself a nuisance at the space ports. If they did decide to inquire, he would be remembered. And then he would be dismissed. The wine would keep well enough, and he would find a way to make some money from the sale.

As often as he complained in his mind about the lack of funding Duvek had luxuries. They wouldn't have access to any except through him. He began to prepare supplies to take back with him. He would include a few for her"and the package he supposed. This first run would need to be from his own things. The future would bring the kinds of things that might be appreciated. Duvek paused next to his desk, he opened a hidden door and pulled a small book free. It wouldn't hurt to put down a few thoughts before returning"would it?

Chapter Three: The Good Word

Corrim was glad to see the supplies he had beamed in had been stowed away. Blankets, and more food. The replicator had been working over time, Corrim wasn't sure what she would want so he just began sending things in bulk. He moved quietly through the doorway, closing it behind him. Voices carried to him, was that the makings of a laugh he detected" The door to the only bedroom stood ajar and he leaned on the frame observing what he could see.

Zora was kneeling by Durai's bedside. Her head was propped up on an open palm, supported by her elbow resting on the edge of the bed. She continued staring at Durai and smiling as he spoke to her, telling her of more of his sermons.

Durai was looking over at Zora, his arm beneath his head. He wore that charming smile and his eyes shined as he spoke of those times. "But really Zora...here I have been talking about me and you have yet to tell me of yourself." He caught the evidence of a shadow at the door. He turned his head from her to the door with an intake of breath.

Corrim opened the door as he noticed he was no longer undetected. "Well Zora, I see you have done a good job of making sure our...patient is out of the woods." He had been about to say prisoner. He had been hard pressed enough today by the ordeal with the patrols. Corrim projected that air of smug cheeriness that he used to demean his level of intimidation. "I'm surprised to find you awake so quickly, you must be thoroughly exhausted." He eyed Durai and gave a tilt headed smile. "I thought you should know that I am back." He spoke to Zora though he never stopped looking at Durai. The doorway was abandoned for the main room.

Zora stood and said softly to Durai, "Go ahead and rest. I'll make sure everything is going ok." She walked out to meet Corrim. Durai watched her trail after the alien. What had she said his name was...Duvek" He thought that sounded right. The questions were in his head from the moment he first heard that the Cardie was involved. Zora needed guidance, it was quite obvious...and not from a Nergenda like that.

Corrim found himself sitting on the low couch with legs crossed. He could wish he had something in his hand to drink. It was always so much easier to do his job with something in the hand. Preferably something that might catch the light. He made a point not to look at the doorway he had just left though. He concentrated instead on how to keep them from being detected.

Zora came out to greet Corrim and said excitedly, "So, any news?" She sat down on the other end of the couch and sat towards him, a distance greater than what she shared with Durai.

Corrim turned his head to look at Zora, what was that he was feeling over the two of them. Surely not anything more than concern that she would jeopardize whatever the mission was going to be. "News" Oh yes, plenty of news out there. Patrols have been sweeping the skies looking at everything that moves out there. Nothing escapes their interest."

"So what?s the plan now" What is to become of Durai?" Zora still wasn't sure if this was a safe enough place for him. She knew her own intentions were to help him, but she didn't know if Mr. Duvek and his superiors had the same goal in mind. Again, her interest in Durai made her loose her arrogance and she seemed genuinely concerned.

Corrim remained silent. He took a deep sighing breath and determined something right away. Rising he moved to the door of the bedroom closing it tightly before returning to his place. "Now" Now we wait until we are contacted. It isn't safe to open a channel and ask questions despite the efforts of encrypting. Nothing will stick out more than encoded message. If I were in charge and saw it, that would be the first place I searched" the first person I put to the question."

Zora watched suspiciously as he rose to close the door to Durai's room. She nodded as he made his way back and sat down.

She was a little disappointed. His vague answer made it sound like he didn't know much of what was going on. She was confused. He was supposed to be the one with the answers. She said flatly, "Ok, well, as long as you got it covered. I'm going to keep an eye on him tonight. There's a chair in the room. I'll just sleep there. That way, in case he needs me for anything, I'll be right there."

Corrim did his best not to stiffen with her letting him know of her plans. "No no...of course not my dear Zora. Clearly he needs you much more than he seems." He turned his head away from her as he spoke muffling what came next. "Most half naked men do need a vibrant young woman fawning over them." He cleared his throat as though that would cover what he had said enough. "I won't be here long...I need to keep them guessing where he is. I promise you will be safe...Perhaps though..." He provided her with a communications device. "Take this, I will signal you if you need to run."

Zora accepted the device and smiled at him. "Ok. Thanks." She rose and walked along the path Corrim had until she got to the bedroom door. She opened it and walked inside. She smiled towards Durai as she closed the door behind her.

Corrim keyed open the coms to his ship the click of the door echoing in his head. "One to beam up."

Supplies beamed in, and then the Cardassian. These were different though. Recording equipment was present along with the resupply of food stuffs. Corrim sighed tiredly and moved over to the couch to sit. He couldn't remember the last time he had slept. For the purposes of privacy...well really for the purposes of interrupting privacy he called out.

"I have returned from the jaws of the machine, you two!!" Then he dropped his voice low. "Don't let me interrupt your...talking."

Zora stood from her chair next to Durai's bed. She eagerly helped him put on his robe that Corrim had given her among their supplies. She gave one last look to his sculpted abdomen and back as he wrapped it around him before going out to the living room to meet Corrim. She only looked for purely scientific reasons. She had to look to learn how to properly shapeshift after all.

Durai moved through the bedroom, a laughing smile painted across his face as he looked at Corrim. He could see the man was exhausted, still he took more interest in the equipment present. "Looks like you are about to outfit this place with a new stereo...I assume there is a reason for all that technology?" His eyes went back to Corrim who smiled rather than roll his eyes as he wanted to. Zora followed closely behind Durai and smiled kindly when she saw Corrim.

"Oh yes...indeed there are to be some changes around here Durai...you are going to have to earn your keep now." Corrim's voice remained even and had that dip of sarcastic charm that he was so known for. The robe didn't miss his eyes. He hadn't intended it for him but then he hadn't specified either. "Ah...Zora, so good to see you again dear. You are looking...well the same I suppose." Why did he think that was strange" He took a deep sighing breath and pushed up from the couch. "Nice as you look half naked in my robe Durai...you will want to dress more appropriately I think. The heat has lifted...someone convinced them that they saw you escaping on a Targellian freighter weeks ago." He turned and stepped around the equipment. "More than that we have agreed to help you get your message out to the people Durai...does that appeal to you? I am afraid that in order to do so you will be needing to undergo the trappings of technology you see before you."

Zora looked down for a moment in thought. She did always wear the same thing. She had never considered it before. Humanoids changed their clothes. She should change her clothing appearances, too. Staying among humanoids for so long as something she was learning as she was going along. It wasn't enough that she had to sneak into the bathroom each night and refresh herself by resting in her liquid form while Durai slept. Now she had something else to be subconscious about. She wasn't even paying attention to what they were discussing.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-06-06 00:22 EST
Durai shifted the front of the robe slightly as though he weren't quite comfortable. There was a flash of the abdomen and his chest as the tie was refastened. "So...I am to what, record my message" I want to be in the streets, Duvek...Tell your people that I will be delivering my message on the front steps of the Temple of Orias." His chin came up with a smug defiance. Corrim merely smiled at him like a child having a tantrum.

"The issue here is your safety...without a group willing to take you in protect you...you might as well have me deliver you back to prison. This way we can smuggle out your message and find your followers Duvai....I am afraid it is necessary." He kept his eyes on Durai, though he was watching Zora peripherally.

Her inner thoughts were interrupted as Zora noticed Durai adjust his robe. In the light of the room, she could see muscles more prominently displayed. She watched with a sense of awe for the art of the humanoid's body. Now she was not paying attention to Duvek for a different reason.

"That's Durai...Mr. Duvek." He looked at the Cardassian but held on to his calm. "Still I see your point, the need to have help once we reach the city will be of utmost importance." Durai turned abruptly to Zora and smiled at her. "Zora...my dear. Did you say the green outfit was cleaned and ready?" He waited for her eyes never leaving her face.

Corrim struggled hard against the rolling of his eyes. "Just Duvek. I am but a simple trader Vedas Durai. Of no importance at all." He moved to start setting up the equipment. Did he tell Zora of his incarceration and interrogation' He looked at her and the way she was with Durai and decided she wouldn't be interested. "Give me a hand when you can please Zora."

When Durai spoke to her, she immediately met his eyes. She smiled and said, "Oh, yes it is." She turned to Corrim, listening to his request. She turned back to Durai, "Did you need my help at all?" She wanted to make sure Durai was settled first.

The robed man's smile grew. "Mmm...well I don't think I need any help getting dressed, but the offer is greatly appreciated...another time perhaps.? He slipped past her brushing a hand along her fore arm as he came even with her and slipped into the room shutting the door behind him. She melted slightly as he touched against her. Purely scientific motivations, she told herself. Seeing humanoid skin was helpful in emulation, but feeling it gave a deeper meaning to what it entailed.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-06 21:57 EST
Corrim felt the sudden urge to look anywhere but at Zora. "I have brought more food...I am sorry I took so long this time. It was...unavoidable." He lifted a case and began to move it across the room only to wince as it bumped the wall and into his chest. "I trust things are well for you two here though' You didn't run out of the last food I brought?"

Corrim's words distracted her and she once again faced him. "Oh, no, there was plenty?" She didn't need to eat, but she could never say such a thing. Humanoids needed to eat. She wanted to keep up appearances by disposing of some of the food, but she couldn't bring herself to do it, knowing that Corrim went through so much effort to bring it. For now, she managed by saying she ate before, or would eat later. But it was the second time Corrim made reference to her eccentricities, and she was beginning to worry a bit.

Duvek eased the crates down and into place. He popped seals and pulled out recording equipment. "There is a portable screen there..I need it set up...I really think you are going to like what is on it." He would wait to see her face when she saw the backdrop come up of a cave entrance in the Toron desert. That would keep them guessing for a good long time. Duvek had found these shots when he found the time. To the world it would look like Durai was constantly on the move.

The robe came away, and the priest began to don his robes. He began to make a speech in his head and scrapped it. "No..first defiance then the word...that is what the sheep need to hear." He dressed slowly as he went over every motion of hand he could make..every bob of he head.

Zora jumped in to help set up. She knew a little bit about electronic equipment. Granted, she mostly knew how to sabotage it in her efforts. As soon as she saw the Toron desert, her eyes lit up. "Oh, it's beautiful." She always felt welcome in nature. Nature never rejected her for what she was. It was what drew her to Durai and his preaching of returning to a life of nature.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-06 22:00 EST
The camera set up came next.

Corrim focused on Zora and the back drop. He doubted she knew he was doing it. He didn't know why, but tried to appease himself with he needed to know that the angle was proper for the backdrop to say he was still in Toron. "Thank you...I searched some two dozen Messa's to find that shot." He hit the record button briefly just to test the camera of course. Check the playback. Corrim watched the image of Zora move across the screen with a satisfied smile.

Duvai entered through the door his garments sparkling to show him in his radiance. He looked to the camera and then the backdrop. "A very good plan." He had fallen into his father role and spoke as though responsible for the set up. "I am ready if you are Duvek." He went to stand before the backdrop and wait for Duvek's signal to begin.

She was more focused on the image, than noticing him focus on her. She turned in excitement back to him to go on about the scene, but when she saw he was recording, it alarmed her. She jumped out of view of the camera. She had heard how cameras could view things differently, how certain tools could see things like bone, things she didn't have. It was like he was examining her now. She felt as though he must know. She felt a little more at ease when Durai came back into the room, and it showed.

Duvek would edit out the beginning with Zora. He would keep it citing that he needed images to show to people and discover who she was and who she worked for. He thought nothing of her attempt to get away from view. She was an assassin, after all. "Sit then Durai...the camera just seems to love you." He proceeded to drown out Durai's words with a song in his head. Occasionally he would look to see what she was doing but then back to his recording in disappointment. Zora would remain silently watching Durai. Seated on the couch, watching intently, hanging on to every word, getting caught up in his beliefs to return to nature.

Durai, flashed a defiant grin at the camera. He then spoke of the impotance of his captors, the injustice of the imprisonment that came from the highest levels of the church. He spoke of their need to stifle him and his message. He promised that his message would come to the faithful. That it would change a world with its power. He claimed vigilance and victory...eventually signaling Corrim that he was done. He watched the red light go off on the camera.

Duvai waited for Corrim to show again. It was time to make another tape, this preaching was going well for him, the snake man had brought a real radio down and the news was often filled with snippets of his message to the people. Where the hell was he anyway. "I swear Zora he has no sense of time what so ever!" He began to pace back and forth as he grew more impatient. He turned to regard her with a frustrated face and an exasperated sigh. "You have everything ready right' The new background is in position?"

Zora nodded eagerly, "Yes." She didn't know what was taking Corrim so long. She wondered if something had happened to him. If so, it would jeopardize Durai's safety.

There was a sound out front, not the normal transporter sound, this had a large engine and disturbed the gravel on the road. Voices carried into the cabin from the outside. "My friends please...I assure you that this is the right place...have I ever steered you wrongly' Who was it that got you the first and fifth sermons by Durai from deep in Toron territory' You know it was me...come please...stay with the truck and I will get him for you."

Corrim slipped backwards through the door, closing it and turning on the other two. "You have visitors...and this...place is compromised. We will be moving into Orias..tonight.!" Zora perked up when she saw Corrim, but her smile faded as he spoke seriously. She turned to Durai for guidance in the situation, trusting his decision as final.

"Care to tell me what happened?" Durai's face was stern as he looked at Corrim. The two locked eyes, but it was Corrim who spoke up. "More than happy to Durai...on the road. This place will be over run tonight...I don't want to fall into their hands...." He stopped before the word 'again' came out. Durai nodded moving quickly to pack his essentials. Zora was left with Duvek who was pointedly not looking at her. He looked everywhere but at Zora in fact. "One of his fanatics found a way to tap into the broadcast signal...got captured and then...well here we are."

Zora suspected he knew about her. Even now, he was so disgusted by what she was, he couldn't even bare to look at her. She didn't know what to say. She had been happy here. It was like she got to experience a small glimpse of what life was like for a normal person. A normal person' She meant a humanoid. Is that what she viewed them as now" Normal" Had she lived among them for so long she lost touch of what she was? She stared at Corrim, but was lost in thought.

Shifting Eyes

Durai appeared with his sack full of clothes and looked at the other two. Why were they looking away from each other. What were they hiding from him. Had Duvek said something to Zora" "I'm ready? shouldn't we get this stuff in the truck?" Duvek shook his head at Durai and just spun on his heel and headed on out. "Quickly now...These are some of your earliest supporters. Each has been instrumental in the distrubution of your word." Six men grinned as Durai approached them, there was a look of curiosity at Zora but nothing that could compare with the adoration in their eyes. "You see my good Durai...the plan has had the desired effect." Corrim looked at Zora then. "Quickly my dear...to linger is to be..." He didn't get the words out as the flames began to hit the roof and smoke poured into the sky. "No time everyone in!" Zora quickly did as he instructed.

Durai's eyes widened as he noticed the fire. "What did you do?" He looked at Duvek accusingly. Duvek however was starting the vehicle, and getting ready to move out. Durai opened up for Zora and followed her into the truck.

"It's quite simple Durai...I just buried you again...and I will keep burying you until the day I am free of you." He looked to the others. "I will ride as far as the outskirts then I must not be in the vehicle...they are looking for Durai to be with me. I don't intend to be there when you cross into the city." Zora looked worried. She had always been with both of them. The three of them made a good team. She didn't want Corrim to leave them. She didn't say anything, but she looked at Corrim with concern.

They would both get papers and as much cash as Corrim could get them without looking suspicious. He would get on his ship, and move to places...make himself be seen and followed. It would protect them...her. The darkness revealed the city lights. Corrim stopped and got out, he looked to Duvai and then to Zora. He gave her his most charming smile before beaming away. Zora smiled for him in return, but her make believe world was falling apart.

Durai watched one of the men jump into the driver's seat. He was saying something to the man next to him about never knowing how sturdy the Cardassian's were. "What do you mean?" The question came from Durai, snapping out at them as though they were children misbehaving. "The Cardassian he got all of us out of interment...not sure how he managed with what they did to him."

Zora started putting the pieces together. Corrim broke these men out of a prison, much like he did for Durai. Undoubtedly they were imprisoned for holding similar beliefs that went against the government. That's probably why he was late. She replayed the words in her head and began to wonder "what they did to him'. He had given so much for them so far, well, for Durai. His mission was only for Durai. Corrim probably regarded her as a stowaway again, much like when she met him the first time. She sighed lightly, laid her head back, and just waited for whatever was coming next.

Whispered Words

The Cardassian had heaped this upon him. Durai was sure of it, the meetings the sneaking around. Somehow Durai just knew that he was dancing to the most intricate of songs composed by Duvek. Everyone wanted something from him, he could barely get two hours of sleep in a row. The Cardie had been by earlier with another of those deliveries. The needed them, Durai wasn't a fool. He could see the growth of the movement was quickly becoming a life unto itself. He had to be at the center. What was it Duvek had said last...if you pay attention you will see where I am even when I am not here...More intrigue, Duvai was tired of tracking his movements...had been for some time. No he was tired of Zora's tracking of his movements. He did his best to shoo away the two men who absolutely needed his blessing. That left him with her eyes on him. She was always there watching, he didn't mind most days...lately it was stifling.

Zora was under equal pressure from the constant moving around. She had to track Corrim's movements as closely as she could. She knew he was their life line in this situation. She also had to keep tabs on Durai and where he would be at every moment in the day. She would have to make sure she timed his sleeping schedule with when she could escape away and regenerate in her natural liquid form, hidden from all of his followers. In case she got left behind, she would have to know where he was so she could keep up.

Durai closed his eyes taking three breaths and emptying his head. He painted the smile on his face before crossing the room and stepping into the courtyard. He passed by Zora in a quiet yet regal manner. His robes had been growing more ornate as time went on. Gifts from the people. Some gave of heirlooms to provide him with the right look. Even Zora had contributed some small things to him. A bit of shampoo that gave his hair a bit of luster. He wasn't sure how she came by it, though he couldn't be certain where she went when he slept. He stepped up onto a raised platform and called to those who were most trusted in the group. They huddled around looking up at him adoringly.

She was always the one who sorted through the shipments Corrim left for them. He left notes and coded messages; mostly things to help know where he was and where the next supplies would be waiting. She had received odd little things in their supplies. Shampoos, robes, luscious dessert delicacies. She would give most to Durai. Most she didn't need or couldn't use. A few things she kept with her. One perfume struck her interest. It smelled similar to a flower nearby where she lived in isolation in the woods. At first it was a forced isolation. When she was young, she could never appear quite like the other humanoids on the plant and they would cast her out. Nature became her only solitude. How far she had come. She was going through some of Corrim's messages when she was interrupted by Durai called the group together. She followed like one of his sheep.

Whispered Words

Vedas Durai's voice raised over the small crowd as though appealing to the gods themselves.

"Brothers, friends...You know we have done this a time or two. The acknowledgement of the works done for the cause are not something that is normally expounded. We view them as necessary in our good work. That is as it should be for the work, but I take the time to tell you that I do see the things you do and have done. Where would I be without the service of Rikkard and Trance. They are always there when I need them to forge the path. Daveth and Charlon, you are so impressive with the way you maintain my safety. There are others as well...young Sergei who does something so simple as to shine my shoes...you do something that no one has thought to do and for that you are smiled upon. For everything you have done has led us further down the path towards our goal. Nature may not thank you, but I have her voice...and she does appreciate all of you."

He smiled down upon them all, the faces that looked away in embarrassment. When they turned back to him he could see that he had grown even more in their esteem. He stepped from the platform and walked among them, touching them and speaking as though they were his closest friends.

Zora looked on in confusion. Everyone else, even the boy who shined his shoes, was given an acknowledgement. Where was her praise" Durai took no notice of Zora as he moved amongst the people. He didn't see her puzzling through the coded script and deciphering the words from Corrim Duvek.

"Bit of chocolate that I hadn't expected to find anywhere near this system. Arguelian...they say it is so rich that it could make a doxy blush. My compliments to you for your fine work. You should know that things are becoming more difficult to hide right now. I have been talking to contacts all through Toron though. You may be surprised at how much damage a few Whispered Words can accomplish."

Corrim went out of his way to send her a small bit of praise in his correspondences to the group. Where they even to the group" Each seemed intended for her only. So many times she wouldn't know what they meant until later.

Sergei turned up the viewscreen so that they could all hear what the talking head from Dreylon was saying regarding the news of the world.

"Rumors of movement from the back to nature sect of Orias. Authorities put down a demonstration on the lawn of the presidential palace that had begun to become violent." Pictures of men armed with clubs and shields crossed the screen flowing through the unarmed student mob. "In related the Anonymous sources within the Toron government are claiming that a hacker breeched firewalls and managed to access a large portion of their data files wiping them from the memory banks. Among this the current data on the location of Renown terrorist leader Vedas Durai. The monitors were all said to short out just after flashing the probable culprits handle. Whispered Words...."

Durai looked at Sergei and signaled him to cut off the transmission. "You can turn it back down...we have seen what we needed, the violent treatment of those who would support us." Sometimes Zora didn't need to wait too long to understand Corrim's messages. She smiled and placed the note back into a created pocket.

Durai caught movement out of the corner of his eye. Zora's smile was enough to change how he had been feeling when he had come away from the meeting earlier. He moved towards her, struck suddenly by something. His hand reached for her shoulder and slid along her arm. "Darling...I am sorry...you must think I am taking advantage of you. It never occurred to me to include you in that...you are always so close it is like you are part of me." He drank in the smile that had inadvertently called him over. "Did you need a hand with the newest supplies" What did the Cardassian leave for us this time" More blankets...a couple of morsels to tide us over?"

Her smile only grew as he spoke to her. She almost melted from his touch along her arm. She answered, "He left a few things, but nothing that he hasn't already handled." It wasn't a lie. There was a concern growing in her mind, but years of personal experience had taught her to never reveal more information than was necessary. She spoke softly, "Durai, I am worried. The Torons must be close to finding us. Even if they no longer have the computer files, there are still paper trails and the knowledge from guards and investigators looking for us."

Shifting Eyes

Durai's hand dropped from her arm and his smile melted away into something narrowed eyes as he looked into her face. "He got you did he" The Cardassian' Lord of Snakes is what he is. Using my own people against me. Or perhaps you heard us talking, and him telling me that we were in jeopardy from a Toron raid?" Durai turned away from her, hands going to his hips even as the fullness of his back was upon her. "Tell me that I can trust him Zora...that he is telling us everything he knows!"

She had seen more of this from him lately. She often questions Corrim's motivations in even helping to free this man, but then it only lead her to question her own motives. But her own motivations were becoming more and more clouded the more time she spent with him. "I don't know if we can trust him, but he has done so much for us?" She paused, and then quickly added to dissolve any concerns about things meant for her, "For you. I'm here to make sure everything goes perfectly. You can trust me."

Pressure seemed to push at the inside of his skull. He fought against exploding, though it would have offered him so much relief. "I do trust you Zora." The acid had come out of his tone for her. "Make it happen, I need some sleep...this day just gets worse." He turned to look at her over his shoulder. His eyes flicked from toe to head as though wondering about her. "I'm sorry I don't have the luxury you do...I can't place much as much faith in an outsider as you seem to Zora.? He took a deep breath before moving, allowing what he had said to sink in with her before heading to the bedroom to get as much rest as he could.

It sunk in with her, though not in the way he intended. Outsider. It burned through her as he said it. All this time she assumed he hated Corrim for a variety of reasons. Not offering finer places to stay or food to eat. Putting him through a heavy schedule. Taking control away from him. She never thought he hated him for the sole fact that he was unlike him. Corrim was an outsider, and that was reason enough for Durai to hate him. Corrim was an outsider, just like her.

Chapter Four: A Foot in the Door

They had moved, again. It seemed they were constantly moving. Sometimes it seemed as though they were only moments before trouble arrived. Many were beginning to wonder what was being done about it. The spent time in the outer rim of the city, there they were safe, but the neighborhoods were more questionable. Many stole what they needed to simply survive. It made Durai sick to see these places. This was Orias, the spiritual center of the planet.

These were the places that were never publicized. That hunger could exist in this place ran contrary to what the current belief system wanted everyone to believe. It was this that he was bringing to light, though it did seem that every time they made headway closer to the center of the city they got pushed back out. It was this that he was bringing to light, though it did seem that every time they made headway closer to the center of the city they got pushed back out.

Durai walked in the center of his handful of security with Zora standing closest to him. The meeting had been moved. The contact there had said something about rumors of a raid coming. They had made arrangements further in. It was what he had been hoping for, to put some power behind the movement.

This was the furthest they had been in yet, and the meeting place was much larger than any buildings he had been in yet. Part of him preferred the outdoors, but there was always the problem of was his message carrying to those in the back. Two of his group moved forward to secure his route inside. Sergei met him and Zora as they moved through the corridors.

Durai was handed his freshly polished shoes by the boy who slipped away and managed to take a seat in front of everyone He was cross legged on the floor. Durai looked back at Zora, "I knew we would break the barrier eventually."

She walked in some sort of dream, it seemed. Not only was she walking among the humanoids, but she walked in honor among them by his side. The shapeshifter's wide eyes looked over everything, but she was in a haze. His statement interrupted her stupor. "Oh yes," she responded, "This is incredible. Everything is coming along perfectly." She quickly took her place. When she could, she always stood a short distance behind him while he spoke. It was the best position for her to watch over the crowd and protect him. He had a message to spread and she would make sure she did everything she could to make sure that he was safe to deliver that message to as many would hear him. She continued to look over the crowd in amazement.

Shifting Eyes

He gave her shoulder a light squeeze before stepping onto the daze. That slow regal walk with chin lifted in defiance was present. He nodded to the few he knew and signaled for the doors to close at the back. "I see many here who know me already. Many more whom I will get to know better. Those of you who are knew, will hear me speak tonight of what is right. What the accepted beliefs stifle and do everything they can to destroy."

There was a shifting of bodies out there in the crowd. There often was when he would raise such points. A flash likely from an earring caught his eye as he was speaking. He moved slightly to get it out of his line of vision. "The church has held back knowledge from you, I know for I was within its vaults when my epiphany came to me." The shifting grew greater as he went on, more flashes these seeming more like camera's going off. That was something new to him.

Her attention would often fall to him and his words, but the small glares of light off the crowd drew her attention now. She peered out, but just assumed that the excessive and grand jewelry of this more opulent audience was to blame.

One green point of light began to move its way up the leg of Duvai. He didn't notice the it, someone had intensified the stage lights and left him holding his hand up to his eyes to shield them from the burning glare. He continued to try to convey his message, sticking to the prepared sermon he had been practicing for days. He was sure someone would fix the problem soon. He knew he would be seeing spots for quite some time though. Such things were to be expected with such a sudden change in venue.

Zora watched as the lights became brighter and Durai shielded his eyes. She looked out to see why the man in charge of lighting was doing this at such an important venue. Instead, she saw a small green reflection of light in the crowd. Green. There was no green lighting. It couldn't be a reflection. She quickly began putting the pieces together. They had been diverted from their original venue. They were trapped inside with the doors closed, and most likely locked, behind them. The lighting was raised as a distraction. It was all a set up.

"Durai!"

She yelled as she dove towards him, knocking both of them off the stage and hopefully out of view.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-11 01:18 EST
He turned towards the shout, as a body hit him. Zora swept him from the stage, so quickly he hadn't the time to wonder what was going on. That was when the first muzzle flash went off. The flashes were now starting to make sense as he was catching glimpses of weapons being readied. Something else fell on him, and it was wet and sticky. A pair of lifeless eyes looked at him from a child's face. Sergei, had been close too, he had recognized the green point as a laser sight and been too slow to do what Zora had. He had been to slow to get out of the way too. Gunfire erupted in the outer corridor beyond the doors. "Who....why' He was just a boy...Zora." He didn't consider what the gunfire in hallway meant for the guards at the door. He was disoriented and still seeing spots.

She didn't even hear the words he said. All she was focused on was getting them out of there. She quickly rose to a crouch, then stood when she thought it was safe. She helped him stand, though her strength allowed her to mostly pick him up. She positioned herself between Durai and the crowd as she tried to move him to the side of the room safely. She didn't know another out, but she knew there was no way they would be allowed to walk out the way they came in.

Shouts rose from all around, men in black tactical gear broke through the double doors at the back of the auditorium. Back stage the sounds of booted feet running in time. The were man made thunder on the ears drowned out by the occasional flash of lightning from the end of a gun barrel and the crack that went along with it. Shrieks filled the air, men who were known to be strong wailed as they were cut down. Durai let himself be pulled along in the confusion. A door...one at he front of the stage...an orchestra pit. "There!" He tried hard to get her attention, astonished by her strength. The gods must be smiling upon her now, yes giving her the strength to lead him out.

She heard the command clearly through the waves of panic surrounding them. She quickly led him to the pit, hoping that he was right, trusting in him and his wisdom.

There was a room beneath the stage itself, the place the musicians would meet up and store their cases before a performance. Surely there was a back entrance...please let there be a back way out. The thoughts came unbidden to Durai's head, he was scared, scared enough to notice that they hadn't come down into this place alone. Three black clad men with dark helmets and tinted visors were trailing in behind them. He looked for something anything to defend himself with. His fingers found a dusty set of cymbals He hurled one like a frisbee at the trio before breaking towards the back of the room.

She quickly assessed the room. It was just a simple storage area. There was clearly no way out, but it didn't matter now. The only thing that mattered was the men following them and the more who were bound to follow since they undoubtedly heard the crashing cymbal that Durai threw in defense. She could no longer hope for his wisdom to guide them. Solid as a rock, she rushed up towards the three men?

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-11 01:19 EST
Durai thought sure there would be a way out, the place seemed perfect.

He looked back to Zora panicked where were the three men"

No time to worry about that. "Lock us in...get us out...Zora, there has to be a way out of here. It can't end this way." The sounds outside the room were quieting, gunfire was sporadic and the screams had been replaced by moans. Moans that grew fewer with every new blast from a gun. There was a voice, audible though barely. "Stop wasting bullets...they cost money, use your blades!" Silence oozed over the air like the blood pooled beneath Sergei. Durai's hands trembled, but he went very, very quiet. Wide eyed, he looked at Zora.

Wearing thin, she looked at him blankly. The terror in his eyes meant nothing to her. She had been in situations like this before. She always had a way out, but he needed her help. She didn't know what to do. Lately, she had turned to Durai for answers, but he was a quivering mess. Her thoughts quickly went to Corrim. He had given her some type of device to contact him. She had never thought she would need to, but she never thought she'd ever be in a situation like this again, not when things were working out so perfectly. She pulled the device from a created pocket. She pushed a button on it and began to say softly, as not to bring unwanted attention from the growing quiet outside the room, "Duvek. Duvek. This is Zora and Durai. We need help. We are trapped. Duvek?"

Duvek opened a channel to Zora, he kept the worry out of his voice thinking she might interpret it wrongly.

"Glad you finally remembered me Zora, I've been listening to locals broadcasts for an hour trying to find out where you are. Let me increase the signal output so I can get a definite lock on you." He moved a slider and engaged the transporter. Two forms dissolved away into nothing and appeared on the transport pad of his ship. "You know...that device was something I gave you to stay in contact with." He stepped forward and looked at the pair of them. "Where is he injured?" Corrim noticed the blood on the man's robes.

Zora was so relieved to hear Corrim, then to see him. She looked in surprise when he asked where Durai was injured. She tried to make sure no harm came to him. "I'm not sure?? She looked over at Durai and quickly looked over him to analyze where he was injured based on the blood patterns.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-06-11 22:46 EST
Durai sat heavily, his arms went around his knees and he couldn't seem to raise his eyes from the floor. "It's not mine...the blood...it's doesn't belong to me." He was many things in this moment, relieved that they had made it out first. However on the edge of that and irritating him was the idea that he should have been the one to die instead of all those people. He barely heard the other two talking about him. Enough to tell them he was fine but he drifted after that lost in thoughts of what is and what should be. He would need to analyze his survival very carefully. He hated that he owed it to Duvek, this night had been meant to free him of the man. To give him the strength to keep the Cardie out of his life for good.

Duvek looked from him to Zora when he took in Durai's state. "He needs some time...I do have some guest quarters on the ship...just the one but you can go there and recover as you must." He turned away from her and headed out of the room. "I'll be on the bridge, I think we need to get out of town for a while. If you want to talk...well you know where to find me."

Zora watched Corrim leave. She said to Durai, "Come, let's get you some rest." She knew he was in no state to think properly. She once again helped him up, picking him up for the most part. She led him to the guest quarters and tucked him into the bed as comfortably as she could. Cardassian beds did not exactly seem the most inviting. It was if they had begun this journey all over again. She started out by helping him into bed to recuperate and here she was doing it again. But this time was different. This time, she knew the kind of man he was. This time, she would not stay behind for his beck and call. She settled him in, then left to join Corrim on the bridge.

Durai rolled onto his side, he didn't even notice that Zora had left. Every time he closed his eyes he kept seeing Sergei staring at him. The boy had taken his bullet....his bullet. Someone needed to pay for that.

Someone was to blame.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-06-11 22:47 EST
Duvek was monitoring their course, the ship would fly itself easily enough. If the need to get more creative came, that would require a more manual direction. As it was he had an idea of where they would be safe enough for the next few hours. The planet was well behind them, and before them a lush moon. They wouldn't land, but they would use it as a shield. He tried not to think about how wrong things had gone back there. It was bound to happen though, Durai was attracting attention. The light tones of the console before him sounded and the screens gave him the information he needed. The last time she was on his ship she had slipped in behind him.

Zora stopped outside the doorway to the bridge. It wasn't like last time. She didn't need to sneak around now. "Mr. Duvek?" She didn't even know if Corrim was his name or not, so she went with the only name she knew, though even that could have been a lie.

He stiffened at her formality, there was a moment where he wanted to turn and correct her in that smarmy snide way of his. Instead he just lifted his head and turned slightly. "It's just Duvek, I once would have assumed you knew that. I am not so sure anymore. what you know." He hadn't told her to call him Corrim, though the thought had crossed his mind. He still was uncertain, and it was a very personal thing to have access to that. He turned, leaning on the console as he did. "I am surprised to see you so soon...Zora" Surprised but not disappointed.

She stood up straight and entered. She walked halfway between the door and Duvek. She could only assume by being surprised to see her that he thought she would not be willing to accept responsibility. She began, "Please allow me to explain what happened at the venue." She proceeded to explain the trap that they fell into and all the warning signs along the way that she had overlooked until it was too late to prevent the hysteria. She explained how many of the close followers were killed in front of them, and how, undoubtedly, all of them were by now. "I take full responsibility for the attack. I was supposed to be watching out for things like this. That's why I was supposed to stay by his side."

Corrim listened, the situation wasn't nearly so simple though. If only it could be, but he suspected worse. "Come...sit please." He indicated the chair behind those consoles. He moved out of the way trying to keep her comfortable. "I have things I need to show you, things that will only serve to muddy things up for you." He waited for her to take the offer of a seat conscious of her every movement. He had to ask himself in her place would he sit' Likely he wouldn't but he had been at this far longer than she. Zora was beginning to see the truths in people now and she had no reason to suspect Duvek. He was the one who had done so much for them this whole time. She walked up to him casually and accepted his seat.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-12 02:01 EST
This was his chance, to do away with her once and for all. Except that he didn't see the need anymore. It was clear that the girl was confused worse than that she was blaming herself for the problems that happened on the surface. He tapped a few buttons on the console and brought up a list of mentions by the Toron's of communications with the Orias Law Enforcement. "You can read through my dear and see that someone was talking.

That isn't on you, I'm sure that as the group grew it was impossible to stay on them all." He left the records open for her, something that had his skin prickly. He was being far more informative than he should have been with her. The records would show her exactly how many times he had interfered, even to the point that she would be sure this was the erased core of the Toron computers.

She read it all. She always had an innate ability to absorb information and records quickly, finding order from the chaos of information, processing it all, finding errors in it, slips that normal people would have missed, holes in information, but there was none to be found in his. It was clear that he had been on top of it all this whole time. She grew anxious, only because her fears of him figuring out what she was became more plausible. She turned to face him. Her question had several meanings. "Where do we go from here?"

Duvek pushed away from the console, his mind seized on the question, and twisted it every way it could go. "That depends on many things my dear. To date I haven't been in touch with my own agency, it is dangerous to send subspace signals again. Most especially the coded ones, to be honest I am not sure how I managed to keep you as informed as I could." He slipped around the back of her chair, the knuckle of his bent left forefinger slid along the back of it.

He had noticed her condition as opposed to that of Durai. That meant one of two things, either she wasn't involved in the fighting, something he doubted in his observations of how close she was to the man. Or she was adept enough to maintain her non-disheveled state even under heavy fire. "You remind me?" He let his murmurs trail off.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-12 02:03 EST
Did he know" Maybe that's why he walked behind her. He couldn't stand to look at her. It wouldn't have been the first time she had noticed. Did she remind him of another shapeshifter" Was there another like her out there" She turned again towards him and had a sparkle of excitement in her eyes, but she tried not to reveal more than she needed. "I remind you of someone?"

He must be losing control to let his tongue slip that way. Something quick, believable needed to come out of him. "Hmm".someone" Not exactly my dear Zora." That smile found his face stretching across it was accompanied by the lilting tones and innocent eyes he had a way of affecting to others. "If anything you remind me of how dangerous it is to underestimate someone like you." He turned away from her quickly, feeling for the first time in a long time that he couldn't hold to his deception

A few more taps on the console displayed the capitol city of Draylon. "I believe our last hope for Durai's safety is to get him to Draylon. He may be able to ask for asylum from them. Perhaps that movement of young people would be able to help us along." He pulled up the news frequencies and noted a definite issue that would face them. "That's certainly not good?" He turned up the sound so that Zora could hear it more easily. "The suicide bomber walked into the theater yelling the words "For Nature". Then 14 year old Sergei exploded the device that had been attached to his chest." He muted the sound, and turned back to Zora grateful for a reason to look disturbed in front of her. "That says much more to us than anything else now'doesn't it my dear?"

She looked at him blankly, "That's not what happened."

He locked eyes with her even as children flashed over his shoulder on the screen. Captions beneath them spoke of their relationship to Sergei, and the gist of their statement. Friend of bomber says he often spoke of Durai. "No, they can't afford to tell what really happened there Zora. To have come in and exterminated them all is not something that will bring sympathy to their side. In fact it is likely to drive away any support they might already have. Mind you it won't push them far enough to back Durai. We need the truth to get out about this incident." He pointed to the screen over his shoulder with a raised thumb. "That can't happen in Toron, or in Orias it seems. Only one place claims freedom for their reporters."

Sometimes the depths to what the humanoids would sink to still amazed her. She nodded, still staring back at him. "Yes, we're worn out our welcome on Toron, and now Orias. The only place left to go is Draylon.?

Shifting Eyes

Duvek took a deep breath, he started back towards the place Zora was sitting then passed by it as though deciding at the last minute to change course. He went to the door lingering before speaking again. "This changes things, I won't need to be quite so far away from you?two once we go there. I will need be out of sight surely, especially with how much Durai's followers hate seeing me." He turned to look over his shoulder at the girl. Her expression when she had asked about reminding him of someone had been brilliant and a little heartbreaking. "You must be exhausted. I assume you will be wanting to share Durai's?" He stopped before he said something irreversible.

She honestly had no idea what he was talking about. Her face looked puzzled. "Share his what?"

He wondered if it were a device of women to force men to speak of things that they would rather not. "I've seen how you admire Durai, I assumed in my absence that the two of you had" begun something deeper." He hadn't felt a flush in his cheeks in far longer than he could remember. He hoped his Cardassian coloring was enough to hide it from her. Strange this turn of events, he was usually very good when put on the spot.

"Oh!" She seemed startled by his assumption. She looked away as if trying to dislodge the thought from her mind and then looked back at him. "No. Absolutely not." She looked directly in his eyes. "I cared for him, but not in that way. I nursed him back to health, tried to help in his cause, but nothing ever like that." She didn't even realize how she spoke in the past tense. Things were different now. She couldn't agree with the man and his beliefs any more, not when she saw the man he was, not when she saw how other men could be, like the one before her.

He did his best not to smile at all, but wound up with something just short of smug passing over his face. He turned back and dipped his head at her, eyes closing relieved that there wouldn't be the added difficulty of dealing with a romance as well. "Well"I do apologize for my assumptions then Zora. Perhaps if you are interested"There is a bed in my chambers." He found himself falling propelled forward by a blow to the back. He barely had time to register the shout of rage behind him.

A pair of hands pulled back through the opening and was replaced by a red faced Durai. "You've taken enough from me tonight snake!" He glared at Zora accusingly as he entered, but he turned wild eyed towards Duvek. "Their all dead because of you?you and your plan"you and the people you work for. Manipulating me, with your lies!" He moved forward with an upraised arm that ended in a curl fingered fist. "Now what more can you steal from me and the people"!?

Zora sprang up from the chair and rushed towards Duvek in aid. She stopped a few feet from him when she realized it was Durai. She looked on in horror, trying to understand his words and make sense of what was going on. She heard, but the only thing that mattered was his raised fist aimed at Duvek. She took a hard step forward and quickly grabbed hold of his hand, seemingly enveloping it in hers tightly. She said tersely, "What are you doing" He has only helped you."

Durai looked at the hand that held his, then to the woman who spoke the words. His mouth opened and his eyes held a look of betrayal. They shifted back and forth between her and Duvek. He began to nod slowly at her. "I see"yes. I was right that day wasn't I" He did get to you." He tried to yank his fist away, his features hardening. "You should have saved them"You should have been there to save them instead of cowering here safe in your ship!" He could still see the dead look on Sergei's face when he closed his eyes. "I thought"I expected that you would be waiting for me Zora"like always."

Duvek was grateful to be facing the opposite direction when the look of pain hit his face. He managed not to make too great a noise, nothing that the unexpected blow wouldn't excuse. The pain though from colliding with the console reminded him just how brutal interrogations could be. He pulled himself up gingerly unnoticed by the two struggling in the doorway. "You"expected"I've been watching Durai, there was a lot of expecting going on from you. You expected Zora to be with you? Why' You weren't hurt, not really"not like your followers." He stood defiantly. "You expected me to be there"to save you? I saved you Durai"time and again I saved you. I am surprised it took this long for someone to get inside your operations down there. Someone obviously was looking out for you very well." His eyes fell on Zora's back.

She released Durai's hand, but stayed on the defensive. She looked over her shoulder slightly to check on Duvek. She was positioned between the two, literally and figuratively. She stepped back and off to the side.

Durai shook his head in denial. He refused to listen refused to hear. "The girl did as she chose, the girl was always willing to do what I needed of her." She was there in the room with them, but he was past names at this point. "It should have been you not the child"and you know that's right! I don't believe that you have done anything other than hand us over to them!" He was still red faced as he shouted, he looked once at Zora not understanding. "Why do you defend him Zora"you see what he is??

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-13 00:50 EST
Duvek wouldn't let him change focus though he moved forward slowly giving him a sidelong glance. "No"no, my good Vedas"you don't seem to understand at all. Sergei was your problem?" It had become obvious to the information broker. "He was so proud'so very proud that he told his friends of you?of all your good work. The meetings, the fact that he knew where you were, Durai"he was just a boy. Why did you use him so' Why do you use everyone?" He had come even with Zora now, a planned step.

He was about to say something that was specifically referring to her, and chose to put himself in a place that made it harder to look at her. "Why has every menial task been delegated by you...right down to cooking your meals and doing your laundry?"

Her attention was focused on Durai for safety concerns. She glared at him when he again called attention to Duvek being an alien to his planet. But it was Duvek's explanation that made the most sense to her. Sergei was always the one to go around talking about Durai, trying to bring more people to his sermons. Maybe this time, he talked too much, to the wrong people. She listened as Duvek came to the people's defense against Durai, and soon understood that she, too, was taken advantage of. She was grateful that Duvek stood where he did. She looked down and away from both of them, in shame.

Durai's brows came down hard over his eyes. He looked at Duvek with loathing, letting his eyes travel from face to foot and back and hating every inch of the man. "I didn't ask for these things, theY were given. How dare you accuse me of causing their deaths?" It didn't matter that he had moments before accused Duvek of the same crime. He needed to blame someone...and he prefered that someone to be alive, and foreign.

"I didn't see you trying to stop"." An followed by the voice of the computer, interrupted Duvek's response. Proximity alert. He turned to look back into the room. "On screen!" A ship appeared, one distinctly Toronian in make. "They've found us"Computer how are they being guided?" A moment later the computer responded. They are locked onto a subspace signal. "You two need to hide"on the shuttle, wait for them to board me and use it to escape! Don't worry about me, I have dealt with them before. Zora, mask the energy signal on the shuttle and they will never know it was here."

The alert caused her to raise her head. She quickly turned to view the screen, and listened intently to his instructions. She was sickened at the thought of going anywhere with this humanoid, but she knew that Durai was important for both of their purposes. She again grabbed Durai's hand and pulled him towards the shuttle.

Durai let himself be led from the room. He was far from being calm, but he knew that the approaching ship was after him. Part of him was surprised that Duvek hadn't decided to hand him over to the raider that was closing on them. "We aren't done yet"you know that!"

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-13 00:50 EST
Duvek stopped listening to Durai. He started to breath, counting in his head the length of time it would take for them to reach the shuttle and get safely on board. He would give them as much time as possible. He opened a channel to the Toron Raider. "Gentlemen"oh..and lady, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company' Perhaps you needed some Doktarian Ale" I have a hold just brimming with it." The trio on the ship seemed un-amused by Duvek, but he kept that harmless smile in place.

The woman spoke in tones deep enough that she could have been mistaken for a male. "Lower your shield and prepare to be boarded."

Zora made sure that they reached the shuttle as quickly as possible. She quickly made allt he adjustments, masking their energy signature, as well as a few of her own techniques. She then made sure Durai was secure. Durai remained quiet, letting Zora do what she was good at. He thought hard over the things that Duvek had said. Could the boy have been the one"

"Shields"I'm sure I can find those"it's a new ship." Duvek tapped a few buttons loudly and ineptly. The shuttle bay opened up. "Oh"well?" He looked up still holding to the smile. "I guess that was definitely not the shields" what about?" More fumbling and the shields dropped for the boarding party. The three crew on the raider beamed in two of them grabbing hold of Duvek while the woman asked him questions.

"Where is he?" Duvek was sure she knew exactly what she was looking for.

Zora waited for some signal and as soon as the bay opened, she knew that was her chance. Oh, she could kiss Duvek. She quickly began the launch and their escape from the bay was perfectly timed as his ship was boarded. She knew where she had to go. Dreylon.

Duvek looked at the woman perplexed; he shook his head in ignorance. "He?" Her hand cracked across his face, and the two drove him to his knees. The woman signaled one of them with a motion of her head. He moved away pulling out a device and looking at it as he went directly for the spare quarters. He returned shortly with a shoe in his hand. He pulled the heel away and dropped the device into the woman's hand. She looked down at the device and then to Corrim with a sadistic smile.

"We're a long way from anywhere, and anyone that will hear your screams.?

Chapter Five: Coffee and Tea

Durai tried to see if the shuttle had been discovered yet. It had been days since the flight from Duvek's ship.

Strange that he hadn't shown up yet, though Durai didn't really care. They were better off without him, but the snake had done something to Zora. She hadn't acted right since the ambush. No....not since using that damn com device. His eyes narrowed at the memory of that moment. More so over feeling beholden to an outsider. Why the hell couldn't Zora see what was right. She was out, reading the streets or whatever she called it. This gave him time to find a place that he could link to the web and try to find his followers. Was that a glint of metal beneath the bridge in the distance? He shrugged and ducked into the coffee shop. Two hours wasn't much time but it was her average patrol.

Zora had been out on the streets the whole night. She took a short break to rest herself, but other than that, she was out talking to everyone she could. She didn't trust the web as much as she enjoyed hearing the word on the streets. Sometimes she would hear what the media told the public to think, but other times she would hear the truth. That was what she wanted, what she needed. She learned a lot. Durai was still loved by many of the people, even here in Draylon. Even some government officials loved him, but others were strongly against him. She would collect all the information she could.

Shifting Eyes

Zora continued on her route for that day and walked passed a coffee shop. She barely glanced in, but stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Durai. She was livid. She warned him about going out and exposing himself, especially alone. She walked inside and up to him. She kept a constant watch over everyone coming and going from the shop, just in case.

Durai tapped a few more buttons, not feeling anything about using the tech that he was so dead against. The movement needed to move forward, but he felt so set back that he would do what it took to get them going again. He never looked up from his work to see who was entering. Zora's repeated warnings about being seen were listened to and discarded. He needed to get her back on his side. There had been some progress on one front, the movement in Orias was not completely shut down. Most were in hiding but there were a few that searched for answers. He considered what to do with them. It was clear they weren't strong enough to protect him...that they were averse to fighting a battle the way he felt must be done now.

She waited to speak until a couple on their way out left, leaving only a few in the shop. She spoke tersely from over his shoulder, "We need to go." She wanted to scold him for this carelessness, but she didn't want to make a scene here, causing even more publicity for them. He did his best not to look as startled as he felt. He pushed aside any guilty feelings as well, as he mailed himself several links that he wanted to follow up on. "You were supposed to be gone much longer than this...I need to do something, and the safe house you have us in doesn't allow for me to do so. I will come, but I will likely try to come back." He looked up at her as he shut down the computer.

He stood up quietly smiling as though nothing was out of the ordinary. She took a step back to let him rise. "Go straight to the safe house. Do not look for me. I will follow behind you at a distance." She allowed him to lead the way. She would trail behind, enough to make no connection between them, but still close enough to always have an eye on him.

When did he start taking orders from her? It rankled him a bit that she sought to control him now. The Cardie must have really done a number on Zora to make her think she was in a position to tell him what to do. So why was he doing it' To keep from making a scene, there would be words when she showed up that much was sure. He was no one's puppet.

Whispered Words

The message had changed, not the rejection of the sciences being shoved down their throats, but the how. The media ate it up, putting down the message while speaking of how brave Durai was. They spoke of him as a hero, and commented often on his freedom of speech. This pleased Durai, so little seemed to anymore. Zora was if anything more restrictive than she ever had been. He would watch her when she returned from her trips. She had managed to get him a laptop computer and tapped into some poor fool's connection. He doubted they even knew what was causing the lag on their end.

Zora sat watching him type over the laptop he was supposed to despise. She could see him for what he was now. She would need to be getting back out to the streets but she had one problem. She sat looking at Duvek's comm device. She continued to play with it in her hands. She wondered how long it would be before he would be able to find them by tracking it.

He watched the device twirling. He should have felt relieved she hadn't used it, but all he saw was red. "Why the hell do you keep that thing" We don't need him anymore. You have been making headway out there...I have managed to get to those of the order. It hasn't been easy to set up a network that I can trust to get them information. They refuse to have even one computer to talk to me themselves." His eyes narrowed as the device took yet another slow spin. "Or perhaps you have some reason you need it' Charmed perhaps by the snake?"

Zora glared at him while he spoke. First Duvek thought she was in love with Durai. Now Durai accused her of the same thing for Duvek. She stood up and held it up defiantly, "This is the most important piece of technology we could ever need. It's our only way of getting in contact with Duvek. You need him, not me.?

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-14 17:21 EST
He hadn't been able to say the name, hearing it from her sent his head swirling into something dark. Durai stood without ever knowing he moved. "What's stopping you from signaling" I see how you play with it night and day...eyes always on the stars! We don't need him...we didn't' need him back in Orias! He was gone and we were better off." His hand moved faster than he had thought it could to try and snatch the device away from her. She was astounded by his reaction, enough to put her off guard. He was able to easily take it from her.

In the center of his brain he felt a white hot flash. A release as victory rested in his hand. He looked at Zora and her defiance with something close to manic. His grin held a cruelty that he had until now reserved for the Cardassian. A hard side armed throw sent the device hurtling through the air at the wall across the room. Pieces clattered to the floor the sound followed quickly by Durai's laughter. "Now there won't be an issue will there" I won't have to worry about waking up to find that simpering smile aimed at me as it insults me with its very presence!" He spoke through teeth that were ground together tightly. Zora looked in horror at the shattered pieces.

She turned back to him and just shook her head. She was having a hard time separating out why she was here, why she was helping this man that would not be helped. "I guess we won't have to worry about Duvek for awhile?" She trailed off, knowing that the damage had been done. She added, "You might as well get back to your search. I'm heading out." She needed time to clear her head, time to figure out where to go from here.

Durai's eyes went wide as she turned away from him. "You...What makes you think that you are..." He growled loudly and spun away from her too. "Nevermind" go..." The yelling turned into mutters about being held back, and the lack of freedom. "Why is it that I am only allowed to talk to you? When will you bring back some of these grand connections" Everywhere I look there are men slandering me.? He eyed the screen of his computer and scowled. Zora was done. She ignored him and walked out after he told her to go.

Shifting Eyes

The talking head for the network news turned to face the camera. Durai was half paying attention as though looking for something specific to happen. In a self important voice heaped with fatherly concern that Durai knew the man had to practice in front of a mirror. "This was delivered to the station anonymously. The man in the video...none other than Vedas Durai, a man known for his ties to the suicide bombings that occurred recently in Orias...He however tells a different story."

Durai was shown speaking. "My....friends....Children of Baaja. I have seen the evidence that has come from the unrest in Orias. I can tell you only that what you see is not truth. My movement there was peaceful, if hated. The slaughter of innocents lies on the hands of those in power. They came like the whirlwind and destroyed beauty with such malevolent violence. I barely escaped....Children of Baaja....people of Draylon....I come to you a man hunted. I have tried to get to the proper authorities, but my every turn is hounded. This is the last resort of the desperate....I would beg of your government, political asylum. To date none of my messages have been answered....There is not even a whisper of my attempts. The people have a right to know the truth."

The camera cut back to the news anchor who looked solemn. "Word out of the capitol is sporadic. Investigative reporter Janie Paul was on the steps today of Capitol Hill."

Durai smirked over at Zora. "That should get some attention I think."

Zora continued looking at the screen and said, "Maybe more than we bargained for."

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-06-15 21:29 EST
The female anchor spoke, "Outspoken Government Official Edgek Tollum had a few words to say against Vedas Durai's message."

Tollum was shown speaking to a reporter briefly outside on his way to his office. "Vedas Durai and his cult are dangerous. That recording is only more proof that they want to cause chaos and destruction to the whole world with their propaganda against our great cities and our technological advances. I will make sure that our people and our government is safe from people like him at all costs."

The image cued back to the reporter. "Official Tollum has always taken a stand against Vedas Durai, but lately he has been even more vocal. He does not stay in the public eye very often, but when he does, he makes it a point to bring continued criticism against Vedas."

The male anchor put his hand to his ear as though receiving new instructions. "This just in, word of Durai's request for asylum have been met with public demonstrations. Crowds have begun to gather on in key locations like Capitol Hill and the presidential palace. So far the demonstrations remain peaceful, the crowds chanting "Let Him In' we will be updating you as news comes in. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program."

"I like this city...they are so easily manipulated by the masses...this Tollum could be a problem though' yes?" Durai looked over at Zora again.

He hadn't apologized, but she hadn't either. A strange sort of cease fire existed between them for now. They just tolerated each other, knowing that they needed each other to continue his movement, something that was important to both of them. She was more than happy to keep quiet in order to achieve her own goals. She bit her tongue when he mentioned manipulating people. He manipulated her enough as it was, but at least she could see it now. "I don't think we will have anything to worry about with Tollum. Right now, he is only important when he speaks."

The Vedas shut down the screen. Yes, he hated the technology that he was forced to depend on. There was a strange sort of satisfaction though from seeing his plans grow in the mainstream though. Still if he were successful there would be no need to have these devices. Perhaps he saw a need for the medical advances, but invention for comforts sake, this was a sin and he would convince them all some day. He muttered a bit at her comment though. "Someone should shut him up...?

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-06-15 21:30 EST
Zora shook her head. "I assure you he is of no concern. If anything, he is only helping us earn more publicity. Everyone is talking about you now. Instead of him, we need to focus on our efforts. If the broadcasts prove true to public opinion, it seems as though we may be one step closer a public speech."

"I understand the need, I just have a problem with that much opposition to our cause. Some will never be convinced without..." He let the thought trail away, knowing it was probably truer that he just didn't like having anyone speak against him. Not Tollum not anyone...most especially the simpering Cardassian. "To be able to address them publicly....in person. That is the goal, even more so now than it was in Orias."

He stood from his place and began to pace a bit. "Where are we with the local groups" This will help you get them on our side won't it' Surely they will see The Way."

She reported, "It has been slow building, but I have gained several groups in your support. I found a few key players and they're each been building local support for your cause." She called it his cause. Even though she knew she had been doing most of the work, she wanted to stroke his ego. She continued, "I even managed to run into one of our friends from Orias. He has been the most help so far."

He looked up at that, strange they hadn't told him they were sending someone. "Good..." Something seemed odd but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was. "The movement requires much from all of us...I simply do my small part." He would be looking later to see who they had sent. "I would like to meet with the leaders and see how open they are to becoming more involved in the good word."

She said simply, "I can arrange that.? She would make sure to collect them all and have them meet with him in a new location. She couldn't afford the luxury of trusting anyone to know where they were hiding out, not even his followers.

Whispered Words

Ridged fingers slid across the console to the sounds of beeps and trills. He had only recently found a clear trail to follow. The information to this point had been to widespread and vague to nail down the location of Zora and Durai. He had located the shuttle and kept an eye on it, but it seemed that Zora never returned there. That had wasted many hours of his time though he was seeing things develop through other means. If anyone could locate them, it was going to be him. "Why haven't....you tried to contact me yet?" Tollum seemed to be the man of the hour...at least as far as Corrim was concerned. Outspoken and offering just a little more than most people would understand. He had refined his search, now was the time to make a move. The transporter coordinates were locked in and Duvek commanded the computer to energize.

Edgek Tollum was in his office. It was late and he was most likely the only one there in that wing of the building. He was finishing up a few things before he could go home for the night. He was sitting at his desk, looking over some important government files on his computer. Duvek twisted the handle to the senator's door grateful there were so few people around. He could see the man in his office and called to announce himself. There was a smile on the cardassian's face and eyes that spoke of complete honesty. "Excuse me...I am very sorry to interrupt...I know how busy you must be and unexpected company can be so very bothersome. I wondered though...if I might have a word or two with you?"

Edgek blinked hard when he saw him. He had a look of shock on his face. He never expected anyone to call on him this late, especially not this type of whatever kind of species he was. He stood up and said, "Why, certainly my good?" He looked him over a bit, then added politely, "Man. Please, come in. Have a seat if you like." He smiled his own feigned smile and acted like the caring politician he portrayed.

Duvek stepped inside and bowed politely to the senator. "Corrim Duvek...a trader in well many things really. I have heard that you are having a rally of sorts with your constituents...all about this unseemly Vedas Durai. Now I am no political savant, but I do know something about pleasing people. I also have come across some very good bottles of Orianan Red...all vintage. I am sure a man of your stature understands what I am offering, and what it will mean to those more equitable members of your party." He let his eyes drift to the man's chair. "Oh my...that is a fantastic jacket...Is it tailored" I bet the thread count is at least a thousand...I beg of you...may I touch it?" He turned a pleading look to Tollum.

Edgek looked at him blankly for a moment. "Sure, but I can assure you my clothes are on the lower end compared to many of the other officials here. Though, I'm sure I could gain a few of those higher profile officials for my side of the debate by offering your Orianan Red.?

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-06-16 02:22 EST
A ridge fingered hand slid across the fabric of the jacket. He tested the way the collar was attached to the coat and smiled. "I have often considered having something this fine made for me, but it is hard to justify the expense. I for one completely believe you when you speak of how the others flaunt their contributions around." Inside the collar went he tiniest of electronic devices. He would be able to track this man now...hear his conversations. The goal was to find Zora and Durai, but it never hurt to have a bit more knowledge than you were supposed to. "As for the Red...well I can let you have it at cost, you see I believe in your cause. Men like Durai would push men like me off the planet for good. I need this place, the trade is how I survive. As far as I am concerned the man is trying to kill me." He stepped away from the desk and looked down at Tollum. "What have I ever done to upset the man so' Exist?"

Edgek continued to look Duvek in the eyes. Someone who could play the perfect politician as he did, learned to look people directly. Unlike Durai, he certainly had nothing against the man before him. "Well, I for one value the service and products you offer. Free trade is always good for politics. As for Durai" I doubt we'll have to worry about him much longer."

Duvek seemed to brighten at that. His amiable smile returned, grateful to the speaker. "Let us hope that we don't, I am quite sure I have put my support behind the right person. The red will be delivered tomorrow morning...I will give you a bill of sale and provide a copy to you so that you know I make no monetary profit from it. Other than the future of my small trading company that is." He leaned in conspiratorially and lowered his voice. "I have to admit that I was truly afraid when I came to the picket line out there...those kids have such wild eyes."

He said resolutely, "Well, you have nothing to be afraid of with me, friend. My new friends will look forward to the Red. I will look forward to working with you in the future.? He left the man, and wandered into the hallway. He let his head move left and right on a swivel. He pretended to take delight in the sights of the place. He stopped at an information center and collected as many brochures as he could to carry with him through the parks and monuments. The tricorder in his pocket was on. He would know when the senator moved.

"Brilliant Corrim"just brilliant. All that time waiting for him to leave with his jacket, and you never assumed he wouldn't wear the thing?" Duvek had been chastising himself over this particular error for some time. He had tried to rectify the damage, get back in to see Tollum but was blocked. Either the senator had no time or he wasn't in. Duvek could tell when he was getting the run around. He would see the man today or he would find a way to simply beam the man aboard his ship and do his best to threaten for his information.

Zora had been laying out many of her plans for Durai, but in her down time she would try to fix the comm device Duvek had given to her. When Durai broke it, it had also broken any hopes for contacting Duvek. Now that everything was going according to plan, it was the perfect time to devote to the repair of the device. She hoped that she got it right this time. She spoke into it softly, "Duvek. Duvek. This is Zora."

The tone at his chest made him pause in his progress. He had seen enough of these Draylonese to know they all seemed to carry communications devices. They were different though. He crossed his right arm over his chest and tapped the broach that so many had been admiring. He left shot up to his ear as though holding something small in his hand. "My Dear! It is so pleasant to hear from you again. I was just debating if I should call you and ask to come over. Perhaps if you aren't busy we could meet for...." He looked at his wrist as though it had a watch on it. "...well it is too early for drinks, perhaps a bit of tea?"

Zora blinked at the odd greeting. "I think we have a few more pressing needs to attend to first, Duvek." She smiled and continued, "Though I may be open to the possibility in the near future." Her smile faded as she said more professionally, "How quickly can you come to me" We have much to catch up on."

Corrim headed down the steps and made a decisive left. "Yes I know the place it isn't far from where I am staying. The concierge actually recommended it to me...I am so pleased that I will get to experience it with some company to talk to." His pace was semi-hurried as he moved down the sidewalk like a man on his way to a meeting. "I'll be there before you can blink three times my dear..." He stepped off the curb and between two large parked trucks as though about to head across the street. He never reappeared on the other side though.

Corrim reassembled in the safe house near where Zora was standing. She turned as he appeared before her. She smiled brightly. She was so excited to finally see him again. She couldn't help herself as she ran up to him once he was complete. She wrapped her arms over his shoulders and kissed him deeply. Realizing her place, she stopped and looked down as she took a step back. She said meekly, "I'm so happy to see you're ok. I was worried when we left you, that those guards on your ship?" She trailed off, still looking down.

Shock washed across him at the greeting, though it wasn't unpleasant. It had been so long since his lips had felt that sensation. Warmth seemed to flow through him wherever she was pressed. When she let go it took time for him to realize that he was staring at her. "Nothing to worry over...I am far more resilient than I look." He tried very hard to put that reassuring smile on his face, but the woman had completely disarmed him. "It was I who worried for you, no word for so long. Nothing across the air waves but propaganda...your doing I am sure. I knew at least that you were safe."

Durai's stomach turned even as he saw spots before his eyes. Pins and needles prickled through his skin and around his brain as he witnessed the girl throw herself at the Cardassian. His fists clenched and he forgot what he had come to tell her. The only thing he could think to do was slam the door behind himself and glare at the two of them. How dare she let herself be tainted that way! "I thought we were rid of you'snake!"

Duvek smiled at the state Durai was in. He tilted his head to the man and spoke with the same demeanor that had gotten him inside of so many places. "Come, come Durai...you can do so much better...what was it you called me before" Nagesh wasn't it' I so much prefer to be the Lord of Serpents to a simple snake. Though I do see how you might be confused...as you have been granting the title to others. It was only a matter of time before I arrived.? He held off the temptation to drive Durai over the edge by putting arms around Zora. She had done nothing to deserve to be so used by him.

But she would volunteer her own display. She turned to face Durai as he spoke. As Duvek responded, she took a step closer to Duvek, stopping just short of touching him. She continued to look at Durai boldly, as if to show she was clearly on Duvek's side and would stand with him. She didn't speak, allowing them to sort out the power play between themselves for the moment.

Whispered Words

Durai watched his former ally turn on him for the outsider. His hands shook there was anger, but also a sense of loss. He hadn't felt this alone since being in the back of that truck moving towards his execution. "You are a snake, a liar and a manipulator. You couldn't tell the truth if they were peeling your flesh from you." Durai spit on the floor in his direction.

Corrim gave a laughing scoff at the spit and the man. "You're right of course Durai...I am all this and more. Why tell the truth, if a lie will work" Why give away information easily when you can line your pockets" The truth is for the unimaginative...I have no problems there. I am a fraud, but at least I admit it when it is presented. Some frauds walk around spouting their beliefs, preying on the faith of others. Some use their position to turn the heads of the young because they can't manage to turn the head of their peers." He looked into the room adjacent at all the gadgetry there. "Meanwhile they sin against their own beliefs and justify it with the word need. Do we know anyone like that Durai?" He never let that smile fall from his face though the innocent eyes held him more as an inquisitor's.

Durai's eyes bulged at the words coming from Corrim. He turned that expression on the person who stood between them. "You hear him...you hear what he admits to...this is the man you choose to support' You have been here...you have been with me. Have I ever done anything that wasn't needed?" He shook his head and cast a shameful look on Zora. "You defile yourself...He is not one of the Children of Baaja. He doesn't support The Way...He doesn't believe in the Good Word. All his words are tainted!" He pointed at Corrim just behind her. "Rightly I have named him Nagesh! Now he has become thief too."

Zora shook her head at Durai. "We need him to support your cause. We could have not come this far without him. Please, we need to work together." She spoke softly, hoping to diffuse the tension between all of them. She continued, "We both will continue to fight for your cause. Our beliefs for the good of the planet remain the same. Let us help you."

Whispered Words

Durai looked like she had slapped him. "We" There hasn't been a we here for some time now. Not with you pining for..." He shook off the whatever he was going to say and narrowed eyes at her. "He wasn't involved in anything...not since the day he left us on the outskirts of Orias. He certainly had no part in the movement since our arrival here. Unless he can tell me what part he played in the invitation to speak at a rally on the steps of the Capitol Building itself?" He looked smoothly Duvek and gave him a sneering smirk. "See...I haven't needed him Zora. The real question is do I really need him now?" Her eyes widened when she realized what he was saying through his insults for Duvek. She smiled brightly, excited to see that everything was working out in their favor.

Corrim could hear as well, and the sneer from Durai only fueled his passiveness further. Though he couldn't help but dig at the religious leader a little more. "Oh my congratulations Durai...you have learned to walk in a world where the rest of your congregation stands transfixed. You have pushed yourself above the people and in so doing the politicians will bend to kiss your...feet." He held up a finger to the man and gave him that soft tilt headed smile.

"Although, that doesn't stop your adversaries from trying to get to you. That has always been my place Durai, all the lies, the scraping and manipulation. How fitting that your truth stands on my imagination. Don't worry...I will continue to follow orders. You will make it to speak at that rally. If they do extend you the asylum you are requesting...then anyone trying to destroy you would quit. They wouldn't wish a martyr now would they?" Zora glared at Duvek for even mentioning the word.

Durai looked at Corrim as though he had been threatened right there. He turned his back on the Cardassian and made his way into that adjacent room muttering as he went. "Clearly you want me dead Nagesh." He moved into his chair and fought the urge to grab up that laptop and give Duvek the satisfaction.

Zora watched Durai go. She turned to Duvek. She realized how close she was to him. She took a step back and looked at him as she said, "It seems as though we all will have arrangements to make in order for this speech to go according to plan.?

Chapter Six: A Comedy and a Tragedy

The throng at the mall was a mishmash of bodies. Some places didn't have enough space for shoulders not to rub. Other places were even tighter. He had come to speak and the youth wanted to hear him. Here and there a family huddled together in several generations. The devout were present, and as close to the front as they could get without impaling themselves on the low barriers. The people came in varying degrees of belief, to include those who simply came to say I was there when.

Order was kept barely in check, this many people couldn't be expected to jam together so closely without a few differences of opinion. It surprised Durai, the diversity that came to him. He had expected his ideas to be embraced by the young. They were so easily led to new ideas, or old ones that have been stated in new ways. He surveyed the crowd once again.

Did he say crowd? It was more like a sea of faces than a crowd. It was the greatest audience he had spoken before yet. He had practiced though, and his message was one of power and change. He tried to spot Zora out there, it was true he had told her that he didn't need her but suddenly he felt very alone. There wasn't even the presence of Duvek to give him something familiar. Somehow he felt vulnerable without them.

The man at the side of the stage pointed his way and held his hand palm out. Introductions were happening, someone was preparing the crowd. A comedian or something. They had introduced him to Durai a few moments before he had gone out. Durai was supposed to pretend he loved the man's humor. Truth was he hadn't heard a word the man said. The palm became a point again and Durai headed onto stage to shake hands with the funnyman.

Shifting Eyes

Zora continued to walk in the crowd. She noticed many faces she had met along the underground, not only from here in Draylon, but from Orias as well. She saw important political figures, too. It seemed that many friends and enemies of Durai were present. She kept a heavy eye on him to make sure none of them would be able to get to him.

Corrim had completed a sweep earlier, checking the guards at the entry ways. He had watched security separate a small squabble deep in the heart of the mass of people. It seemed to come of with very little violence, and none of that from the security forces. Then again men that size tended to make a lot of folks pause. He hadn't spotted Zora yet. He doubted he would in such tight quarters but he looked anyway. He ignored the jokes though he found some of them causing him to chuckle. He then felt tension wrap around him as Durai entered the stage and the crowd began to become more boisterous.

Durai wore his painted smile as he spoke silently to the comedian before turning to the microphone. "How bout another round of applause...funny, very funny stuff." He hoped so anyway, the crowd seemed to enjoy it. "Children of Baaja...You have been living comfortably for a long time. The ways of Science have gifted all with the wealth of time. My message however has been resisted by the scientific community. My message has been outlawed in places like Toron and Orias. They are now discovering what you already know. There is no stopping The Way. Children of Baaja...look to your left and right...these people need you...I need you...Your planet needs you!" He went through those practiced motions, pausing in places to allow for applause. Sometimes it went on longer than he had anticipated. "My friends...brothers and sisters all. The message is powerful...It crosses barriers and bridges gaps. Today I can show you exactly how powerful our message is. To my right..."

He pointed and lowered his voice into something more amused. "Yes hiding behind the curtain, but not for long...A man stands who has devoted time and money in opposition to our message. He has been our greatest resistance here in Draylon, but the message has brought him round." Durai waved to the stage right summoning the man hiding behind the curtain. "Welcome to us...if you will Official Edgek Tollum." There were cheers for the senator, not so loud as for Durai but it was still deafening.

Whispered Words

Durai stepped back from the mic and turned to the right to watch Tollum's approach. Tollum walked up to Durai, smiling and waving to the crowd like the good politician he played. He had made his stance against Durai's movement very clear from the beginning, but over time, he grew to see things in a new light and took a new stand. Today, he was most honored to be the one beside Durai, a man who he came to see in a different light. He approached Durai with an open palm to shake his hand and he spoke a few words to him, drowned out by the applause.

The crosshairs lighted on his target, they had left the tower unguarded. True there was a patrol that came through but their circuitous route took at least fifteen minutes. It was a mistake that they would regret. He saw Durai greet Tollum and handshake and a single armed hug that allowed Durai to get close enough to speak his silent greeting to Tollum and for the man to say something back. Durai looked odd, his face paled and his eyes widened. The shooter tried to understand exactly what was happening up there. He delayed his shot even through a point where the wind had dropped severely.

While one hand was still clasped around Durai's, Tollum's other hand pulled a serrated knife from his pocket and suddenly jabbed it upwards into Durai's abdomen, intending to hit a few organs along its way towards his heart. The knife was pulled out just as quickly as it went in, making sure that the rough edges did as much damage as possible. The knife was dropped and Tollum quickly ran to the nearest curtain and began his path of escape.

Durai felt the blade go in moments after being told that it had been Tollum who had been given the honor to kill him. He felt every inch of the serrated blade go into his abdomen. The pain striking his already shocked mind and screaming at him. He couldn't cry out though, the knife pushing through diaphragm and making it way with an agonizing speed directly into his heart. Durai didn't feel the exit of the blade, Durai didn't feel ever again. His body went to knees and flopped forward in a way that anyone watching would know he was dead. There was no movement to catch himself. And once down there was no movement at all. He didn't get to hear the shrieks from the crowd, the cries from his chosen followers. He didn't hear the wailing of the women. He also never saw the chaos that erupted on the scene.

Whispered Words

Tollum moved quickly for a man of his age. His body was not the only thing he perfected. His escape was planned to every detail. He ran to various store fronts, ducking behind large statues and other obstacles along the way. The path to the alley he planned to duck into in was becoming blocked with people running to see what happened and officers who began to take notice of him fleeing the scene.

The man behind the recticle knew the moment that Durai hit that he wasn't getting up. He had missed his chance to take the target. He tracked Tollum's progress though watching him run through the mall as though he had knowledge of exactly where the most resistance would be.

Men fell before Corrim's eyes, people who were moving to block the Senator from his mad dash. They were shot but the hits came well before the pop. At least he knew that would be the case as he pulled the trigger on another officer who was making a run for Tollum. Really, the man should have told me his plan. Corrim's thoughts were broken by his own need to move. He had already stayed longer than he had been counting on. A good sniper doesn't shoot more than twice from a location.

Corrim had transferred to intelligence when the order had proved more about poisonings for assassination. His time in the Cardassian military had taught him much though about killing a man at distance. "You're on your own now Tollum..." Tollum continued on his run. He rounded one last corner and continued down the alley. He knew none of them would be able to catch up to him once he hit that mark. Later would be a different matter, but for now, he was safe.

The feeling that the city was on heightened awareness wasn't getting any less as common citizens looked at him strangely and increased their pace to get away from him. Zora had contacted him, he would have been gone already if she hadn't. He couldn't break through the interference that had begun shortly after the assassination of Vedas Durai. Flags sat at half mast everywhere around the city. Zora had suggested the coffee shop.

Corrim stood at the door for a minute trying to see inside. He breached the opening and made his way towards the servers behind the bar. "Hello there"I was really hoping that you could prepare me a Dirty Chai?" He pointed up to the sign on the wall behind the bar. "Large please, but instead of Vanilla would you put in a cream?" There was a look from the man behind the counter and Duvek favored him with that smile of his. "I know it is a lot to ask, and well that makes it a different drink entirely"but I find that the blend of spices with the cream suits pallet better than with the vanilla."

Tollum had already been arrested, swearing his innocence. A man in a hooded jacket had just collected his drink from a server near Corrim. He bumped into Corrim lightly, just enough to garner his attention. He looked at him purposefully under his hood and said, "Oh, excuse me." Tollum smiled at Corrim and continued on his way to the door, being sure to keep up his hood as he entered the sidewalk.

The bump had Corrim checking his wallet to make certain it still resided where it belonged. The voice hit him though, as did the face beneath the hood. Over his shoulder another of those annoying news commercials was coming across. "Tonight we talk to counter terrorist experts about the Durai assassination."

Cut to a face that is soberly recounting the facts. "Look, they left these clues to tell us what we needed to know. The rifle traces back to the Toron government"the brutal and archaic way they knifed him in public"all of this sends a message. We killed you with a lack of technology"the poison found in the wound was a guarantee that it wouldn't be able to save him. And the cover fire from the tower"that says we will use it to protect ourselves."

The scene cut again to an anchor woman giving the interview. "So"you believe that the Torons and the Osirians are both involved in this??

Corrim took his coffee and followed the man out. He had to hurry when the man who looked like Tollum turned up into an alleyway. "You have a very interesting face my friend. I bet there are stories upon stories that you could tell a simple tourist like me." The man turned towards Duvek. His face remained hidden under the hood. He ignored the cardassian's lies. Tollum's voice was clear again. "I wanted to thank you for watching out for me. I doubt I could have escaped without your aid."

Corrim closed the space between them ever the passive smile on his face. "Oh"well, I knew that you would need a bit of help getting out. There was an awful lot of resistance headed your way." Corrim's hands moved faster than many would give him credit for. The passive smiles gave many the impression he was not violent. He spun Tollum to face the alley wall and pressed him hard against it. He leaned in against the man's back and spoke in a dangerously soft voice. "Let me tell you what else I know. You knew the route to escape'studied it I would say. Knew the holes in my security grid."

He took a breath and became even more menacing. "I also know that the scent you are wearing is very rare. Only two people on this planet even know of its existence. Of those two I am one"How fascinating that the other also knew the security measures I had in place. Now you will tell me what you have done to Zora, or I will send you to meet Durai." Corrim hadn't seen her since well before Durai was to speak.

Tollum's voice said bluntly from beneath the hood, pressed against the wall, "I will gladly show you if you allow me to stand and face you man to..." He trailed off purposefully. Corrim had heard the insults before, they didn't affect him. He pointed one hand at a nearby trash bin and fired a quick burst from the device in his hand. It disappeared when it was hit. "Slow and easy friend...I have no problem treating you like the trash either." He stepped back far enough that he thought he could avoid any hidden knives. Tollum's voice began, "Well, Duvek, I knew you didn't hold me in high regard, but to compare me to trash?"

Whispered Words

Tollum turned slowly to face Duvek. The hood was thrown back, to reveal Zora's smiling face. She teased in her own voice, "Then I guess you know me better than I thought." She shifted her body to fit her normal physique. Her stance returned to the confident posture he would recognize from before they even met Durai. Corrim's eyes narrowed slightly at her, he turned his head partially away from her, but never let his eyes fall from her face. The gun in his hand was not put away though. He pretended to forget about it, even as he pretended he wasn't ultimately relieved that she was in front of him and all right. This however left many questions for the Cardassian. His smile returned and a bit of the sparkle to his eyes. "You're good...very, very good."

She was the one who leaked enough information to get them caught at the safe house. She was so sick and tired of playing the good little house wife, taking care of Durai all day and night. It was simple, especially when Duvek brought in all the new equipment. She tapped into the broadcast signal and made sure one of Durai's fanatics caught the fall.

She was the one who sold them out when they spoke at the important venue. She wanted to make sure that there was enough of a slaughter to make the news. She made sure that Durai was safe, though. She had to kill several men to do so, but she was not done with him yet.

She was the one who put the tracker in Durai's shoe. She was the one who got Durai changed out of his bloody clothes and into new shoes on Duvek's ship, leaving the tracker behind. She needed Duvek occupied while she went with Durai to lay the groundwork, to make sure everything was planned out the way she needed.

She was the one who made sure that Durai would be there to speak in front of the public eye. She was the one who kidnapped the government official. She was the one who walked up on stage and killed Durai. She was the one who fled and released her captive official in the alleyway to be arrested for her crime. She was the one who planned his assassination from the moment she helped free him.

Durai was never supposed to be a prisoner. He was supposed to be a martyr. He needed to spread his good word, get enough of a following, then be killed to strengthen those beliefs in the people. Duvek played along in her efforts perfectly. Though she didn't know he would help her escape as easily as he did. She looked at him deviously and smiled proudly. In that smile, she would admit to it all.

Whispered Words

Corrim stepped back from her a little further and squared up. "Am I to take it then that I was never the intended victim here" Exactly who do you work for my dear...is it really Zora...and where did you find out about me?" She ignored half of his questions, "No, my dear Duvek. You were never my victim, though I think you may have been victim to my irresistible charms," she teased as she placed a hand on her hip, shamelessly showing her comfort in the situation, "But I think that's all the information you need for now. I wouldn't want to ruin any future endeavors. You helped me out so much this round."

Her features embedded themselves into his brain. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction though of being able to follow his eyes. The weapon went into a pocket while he listened. Two could pretend comfort in the face of this. "Ah...well you do have your charms my dear...Zora. I believe though that you played me against myself. More to the point you managed to threaten me without ever uttering a word. Then lull me with seeming innocence. A round well won on your part. Still it may be the last we have. I need to move on, those are my orders. I am sure that you have your own as well." Why did the idea suddenly feel wrong. He ought to be running fast to get away from her. "It is a pity that we won't be able to work together again some time."

She threw her head back to the side to knock back some hair that flew into her face. "Oh, don't worry about that, Duvek. I will stay in touch." She began to slowly and casually back away, back down the alley. "It is the least you could do...considering I am only here to make sure that you were all right." Duvek called to her as he watched her back away from him. In his mind he had moved forward and seized hold of her. Told her exactly what he wanted. This was banished even as it came. "Information always comes at fair rates for me...though I am sure you knew that already.?

Zora smiled and nodded. She turned and began to walk away. She knew that they both tended to know more than they were willing to lead on. He was a good challenge to her, though she would never want him to know that. She walked away in a sexy glide, making sure he would remember her for quite awhile.
