Indiscretion XI

From the board room of Reserve XI one could see the whole of Odious City. By night it was like looking at a sea of stars stretching endlessly. By day the view was not as glamorous. The city had seen better days. Signs of decay touched the buildings giving everything such a gray and depressing air. Except the office tower belonging to Reserve XI.

At over 100 floors, it towered above Odious City. A monster of steel and black tinted mirrors few outside the organization dared approach it. Strange things were said to happen to uninvited guests there. This made it a thrilling destination for school tours to say the least. Nineteen seven year old children and their teacher got off the bus in the underground parking structure, to be escorted by a security team of six in full commando gear into the lobby of the building.

One of the black clad commandos broke off from the group and approached the reception desk.

"Oh! Do we have a tour today Anthony' Just a moment and I'll call upstairs and find their guide." The receptionist was a bubbly little blond thing, in a business suit that looked far more serious than on would expect. She picked up the phone on her desk and punched in a series of numbers.

Not three minutes after she finished her conversation the elevator doors whirred open and another blond, this one wearing a dusty blue velvet tracksuit stepped out.

"Wonderful! Little ones today. Children I'm Natasha Ra'al, head of Metaphysics here at Reserve XI. Does anyone know what Reserve XI does?"

The children whispered amongst themselves before a surly looking little boy with curly red hair shot up his hand and answered. "My Da says they don't do nothin but eat resources better left to other folk."

"Your Father isn't exactly correct young man. While maintaining a large facility like this does require vast amounts of resources, we never take without considering the impact to those around us. It has been this way since the time Reserve XI was first established. If you'll follow me, we'll start in the hall of history." Natasha led the children through a large arch into what looked like a museum wing.

"On your left you'll see some artifacts from the earliest years of Reserve XI. These are the grimoires of the First Coven who founded our legacy. These books are thousands of years old. Odious City was originally just a handful of mud huts on the edge of the swamp. Between disease, wandering bandits and marauding armies the population of the villiage had been reduced to near nothing over a dozen times in half as many years."

Natasha seemed to like telling this part of the story. She was after all just a little bloodthirsty at heart.

"On the twelfth wave of invaders the armies of Perdition took all the able bodied men that remained to serve in their ranks. This left only women, small children and the elderly in village. Left in charge were the six strongest women in the village. A herb witch named Riat Crowlinn. An Oracle named Serolet Ra'al. A midwife named Kerah Darai. The Lorekeeper Tismasma Sokol, and twin Priestesses Alhelaet Draygon and Laet An'manei. These six were the First Coven."

Portraits of the six women hung on the wall, one over each case containing the grimoires. On the opposite wall hung a movie screen. When the children had directed their attention there a video began playing. It showed a cloudy moonless night, over a circle of stones not unlike the ones found in earth's English countryside. Six women met under the stones as Natasha began the narration for this part of the tour.

" The Coven met when the moon was dark. Grieving the loss of so many of their charges in the village they were resolved to protect the remaining souls. Even if it cost them their own. They cast their circle in the holy place reserved only for women, calling out to the earth and skies for a being strong enough to grant them protection."

The children shrieked at the image that appeared next. With skin like gnarled tree bark, that glowed from below like embers it was a frightful sight. Its form was vaguely human, but frightful in proportion, with massive black wings like a bats. In a word a classic demon.

"The force that answered was a Dark Lord, a master of Fire and Steel. The name by which the Coven knew him was Ahiel. In the dark of that night he sealed a pact with the women of the coven. For eleven generations they would collect a reserve of power for his next return, a force to rival any other. In exchange he would grant each woman a son. These children would grow to manhood in the space of a moon and be warriors and thinkers like no others. He breathed the name of each son into the mother's ear as the act of conception was completed. Nephiel Crowlinn, Letoptahiel Ra'al, Itehiel Darai, Bahiel Sokol, Suhiel An'manei and Sapdihehiel Draygon."

The video snapped off and Natasha ushered the schoolchildren into the next room.

"The next stop on the tour is the hall of Arcana. This is where we display the evolution that lead up to our current product line. In the beginning the first coven was more concerned with survival than with amassing resources. You can see this for yourself here." Natasha pointed to a lighted display containing a selection of fairly rustic looking items. Pride of place in the center was a pitted iron blade, and painted wooden shield. The wood was showing signs of rot, but the painted arms were clear as day.

Six black serpents coiled around an eleven pointed star.

" Each of the six sons of Ahiel had an identical sword and shield. Each was blessed by the mother. The blessings imbued blade and shield with power, each different according to the nature of she who cast it. The nature of the magic is only know to the heir of each bloodline, this being one of the Reserve's most closely guarded secrets. The bloodline of Draygon has been lost in the most recent generations, which is why this one rests here."

"The other items in the case are typical charms and weapons sent into battle with the men who fought along side the original coven and the six sons of Ahiel. Charms of protection, enchantments to keep a knife sharp or help an arrow fly true. This is much the same thing we teach to the youngest children who attend the schools sponsored by Reserve XI."

Natasha motioned them forward and the children of the tour group gathered around the display to get a better look at the items inside. She kept close watch on the faces there, noting who was most interested in what.

One child in particular drew her eye. She was a quiet little girl with eyes the color of swamp water, and long black hair that Natasha was sure came straight from the horror film she had made Mikhail watch with her last week. Something about a ghost child who came out of a well to kill people. This child carefully examined each exhibit, as if she were searching them for all their secrets. The child traced a simple rune on the glass over a particularly ornate charm, then smiled and walked on.

Curious Natasha took the girl's abandoned place and cast out a bit of magic. The rune flashed a sickly yellow then faded away again. The rune for spark. A perfect match for the intended use of the trinket below, which was a fire starting charm.

The child was certainly one to watch.
