It was rumored that glass art pieces held the secret to where a mysterious crystal was located. It could be sold for limitless treasure. It could be used as an alternate power supply. It could grant the owner infinite abilities. The rumors fueled the crystal's appeal and the motivations of those who began to seek it out. The glass artwork became the keys and the few who knew of their secret would stop at nothing to gain their knowledge.

Four glass art pieces. One crystal. Two people joining forces to find them all.

This is that story.

Chapter One: Bonus Prize at the Auction

The frown on Corrim's face wasn't feigned exactly.

The piece that the auctioneer had dropped the hammer on was a nice bit of ancient Romulan furniture. It wasn't overly well done but it did date back to old Romulus. So much from that period had disappeared what with the sun going nova. He had been outbid by a rival, but wasn't too upset. He had to conserve his latinum for what was coming. He had pretended interest on a few things, picking up those things that he knew would get a profit from one client or another.

He waited for the next item he was interested in to find the podium. The reserved tones of the auctioneer carried through the air via the speakers and amplifier that magnified his voice.

"Glass art from the Moinnet studio"a similar piece went at auction last month on Risa for seventeen hundred pieces of gold pressed latinum."

If he weren't interested in bidding the man's voice would have put Corrim into a deep sleep"perhaps even a coma.

"We begin the bidding today at five hundred'do I hear five fifty?"

Corrim's paddle went up with his registration number attached to it. The auctioneer acknowledged him.

"Thank you? Do I hear six??

A blonde woman was sitting in the audience. From her expensive and glamorous attire, it was clear she could easily buy anything on the auction block. She only had her eye on one thing, the Moinnet glass art. Gracefully, she held up her paddle and bid six. She slyly glanced over at her supposed competition. Her eyes went wide when she saw the Cardassian. She immediately turned back to face the piece.

Corrim could hear the Ferengi backstage giggling loudly. He figured this set up was put into place by one of them. He supposed that if he had a need to move things this way he too would try to get them involved. He found it ironic that the auction was proper on the outside but had a center that was rife with greed and lacking in scruples. He turned to see who bid, finding a new face.

"Thank you..." came the voice once again asking for seven and getting it from a third bidder who managed to get their paddle up before Corrim could. He turned back to see the paddle of a wealthy Romulan going down. Corrim had seen him often on the circuit, and had been in bidding wars with him before. It was true that he had more funds than Corrim, but his restrictions were usually far greater. The Tal'Shiar might finance better but they kept a tighter reign too. Corrim raised his paddle at the next opportunity raising to 800 to try and forestall the woman from bidding.

The blonde would not bid this time. She turned to the third bidder. She motioned to an auction attendant, who rushed over to her where she sat at the end of the aisle. She whispered something to him and slipped him some currency. He left her and went up to the bidding Romulan. He whispered something in his ear. The Romulan asked him a question and the attendant pointed to the blonde. He turned to see her and she smiled at him. He snorted quietly, placed his paddle in his lap, and folded his arms. She confidently turned back to face the glass piece. Corrim didn't have to be part of that conversation, the signs were clear enough. There were bigger fish playing in here than just Corrim the simple trader and his Tal'Shiar rival.

The auctioneer lifted his voice again this time in starting to close out the bidding. "800 once...and I remind everyone that papers of legitimacy will be provided with this piece as is stated in the program provided." A local merchant raised his paddle, it was a half-hearted attempt from what Corrim could tell...

The man may have been a plant by the Ferengi running things to get the bidding to a suitable profit margin. The blonde picked up on this and let the plant make his bid unopposed. She tossed her hair over her shoulder and leaned back confidently in her chair as she returned to stare at the piece. Understandably a woman with her finances was used to getting her way, but it seemed as though she intended the Cardassian to earn the art, with as little out of pocket costs to him as possible.

Whispered Words

"Thank you." Came the droning voice at the podium. "Bid is nine hundred" do I hear..."

Corrim had become annoyed, there was one too many games being played here, and he couldn't tell if they were linked or if they simply brushed against one another like secret lovers. He raised his paddle and spoke to cut off the speaker.

"One Thousand!"

The local's eyes bulged; he looked up on to the raised platform. But his eyes trailed beyond to the space where the item had emerged from. He gave a small nod and let his paddle rest in his lap. The auctioneer watched him as though looking for that specific sign. "One thousand...once...." he looked around to see if anyone else might have a bid. "Twice..." His eyes dropped first on the Romulan then on the blond woman.

"Sold to bidder 42...your registration number has been marked in our books...all sales are final."

The lot was taken away, and the auctioneer began to drone on about the next item. Corrim tuned him out. The blonde didn't get what she came for, but she was going to gain something much more important to her instead. She cautiously snuck out while the audience shifted in their seats between products.

Corrim made a show of looking at the program. He leaned left and spoke in a voice just loud enough to be overheard by everyone close. "My my...that didn't go quite how I imagined. A shame really, I had my eye on the Heart of Darlen coming up later...but the cost of that well...I no longer have the means to make the opening bid..." He gave a tutting shake of his head. "and that is the least of the openers...excuse me please..I will just go pick up my pieces and...Oh I do hope to see you next month...I hear they are combing the Gamma quad for pieces...It will be a marvelous time I am sure.?

The trader shimmied along the fronts of the other bidders. There was a reason he always took a center seat. It wasn't the one he gave concerning visibility and lighting on the pieces. It was for moments like this where he was to be perceived as something close to annoying and incompetent. He relished the chuckles at his awkwardness. The paddle would be turned in when he claimed his purchases. The money would be due then as well. He moved along thinking about the amount and the strangeness of that bidding.

Whispered Words

An aged Ferengi looked at him from behind a caged window.

"42, eh?"

He scanned down the log and began producing lots that had been picked up. "You have a good eye...for a Cardassian...pity you don't have the lobes for business." The old Ferengi sent a younger back to fetch the latest purchase. The boy came back empty handed and whispered words into the older's ear that Corrim couldn't quite make out. Corrim looked from one to the other.

"Is there a problem with my purchase" Did it fall and get broken before I could pay' I must say that if so I do expect a substantial discount." Both men across the counter from him gave him the same dirty look. Corrim wondered if they were related or if that was just the standard look to words like discount and refund.

The Cardassian was getting impatient as he waited for them to provide him with the purchase. He could see in his mind the shattered pieces of glass littering some floor back behind the curtains. What he got instead shocked him, though he made no indication of it. "What is this gentlemen...were you planning to replace one with the other?" He looked at a pair of identical glass formations. Each was tagged exactly as the other. Even the writing on the tags was the very same. "Are you trying to pass off a forgery to me?" His hand came up at the last word and went palm to chest. "I assure you that this will get out to the community. Aspersions from me may not seem like much...but...imagine how it will be when your buyers suddenly wish to observe the movement of their purchases with their own eyes...All that snooping into whatever dark things might be running out the back door."

The older Ferengi's head came up at that. "Are you saying that I am a part of...?

Corrim cut him off abruptly.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-08-25 23:15 EST
"It won't matter either way...you will lose credibility...be forced to run a trade ship...or even a bar on some hollowed out space station." He looked at the twin tags closely. "Of course if you will tell me what the number of my purchase was and match it up to the tag I will take it and be on my way...no fuss...no muss. Remember that all sales are final." The two of them looked at one another and then back to the glass pieces.

"But...they're the same", came from the younger one. The older thwapped him on the back of the head.

"Then it seems clear that Corrim Duvek...registered under the number 42 purchased that lot number. That lot number must therefore go with me...as I am Corrim Duvek...and this is my registration number before you." Corrim's voice had started to gain in volume. The Ferengi behind noticed that attention was beginning to be paid.

The older one leaned over the counter and glared. He growled his next words at Corrim. "Take them...and be on your way....quietly."

Corrim smiled that amiable, innocent upturning of his lips. "You are of course gracious caretakers. Far more honest than any information I was ever given by men of questionable reputation.

The man behind the counter looked at him dejectedly. "Yeah...yeah, save the platitudes...when can we expect payment?"

Corrim signaled his ship, a large chest appeared on the desktop. "Do you wish to count it?"

The Ferengi tried to move the chest for a few moments before opening it and verifying the contents. He ran a scanner over the entire thing and checked the readings.

His lip twitched a bit as Corrim spoke in an oily voice. "Oh...yes, I have included a tip for the auction house....a little token of my appreciation..." The Ferengi started to smile glad that he had sent the boy away. "Well...number 42...we do enjoy seeing you come our way...do you need help with your items??

One piece was placed in a metal case, it was clearly big enough to hold only one sculpture. Corrim grabbed the handle of that case, and then lifted the other to his chest. One ridged thumb ran along the polished surfaces, tracing the edges that were just this side of too sharp. He moved the crook of his elbow to hold it tightly too him while he pressed his com badge and beamed away from the auction house.

Shifting Eyes

Once aboard his ship, he hurried to his quarters and laid the glass piece on a low table. The case was opened and its contents place on the table as well. He looked at them both very closely, trying to find a way to tell them apart. Visually they looked identical. Corrim's eyes closed and he used his hands. They slid and searched the glass in front of him, the tips of thumbs tracing along the intricate detail work that had been molded by the artist. One felt much like the other. Later he would figure out a way to determine which was an original and which was a fake...for now he needed to inform his client that the purchase had been made.

He looked over his shoulder once as he was leaving the room. He wondered if perhaps the glass could have duplicated itself...that wouldn't explain the tag though. Corrim headed towards the coms on the bridge so that he could send a subspace message.

After Corrim left the room, one of the glass pieces began to change shape, turning to a liquid mass and flowing to the floor, where it began to take the shape of a woman. This time, it would not appear as a blonde. The young woman appeared to be in her twenties. She was about five and a half feet tall, with ivory skin and dark hair that seemed like it couldn't decide whether it was black or dark brown.

Settling into her preferred skin, Zora made her way to the bridge. She remembered the layout of the ship well. She went to the open door leading in to the bridge and looked in at Corrim. She wore a skin tight, green dress, cut below the knee, with long sleeves. Her long dark hair was tied up loosely and a few strands had fallen to frame her face. She leaned her back against the doorway seductively and spoke softly.

"Miss me?"

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-08-27 23:32 EST
Corrim didn't draw the weapon he had mounted beneath the console. Ironically he had put it there because of the owner of the voice behind him. She spoke in a tone he didn't recognize out of her though. For some reason it pulled at the corners of his mouth. "My dear...only every time I think of you." He took a steadying breath before turning to look on Zora. "I lost track of you on Draylon...on purpose of course there wasn't much time left for me to get out...and you. The smile came, but it wasn't the one he had before turning. "Well you seemed to have things well in hand...I didn't think you needed my help."

She gracefully walked over a few feet in front of him as she spoke. "Well, I do tend to be on top of things....But I will admit, I did not expect to see you at that quaint auction. What was it you purchased" Some old dusty statue thing" Tell me," she interrupted before he could answer the questions she asked, "Do you prefer blondes?" She smiled softly.

Corrim bit back his response, it had been some time since he had needed to fight a blush. He wasn't sure if it was what she said or what came to mind. He took a deep breath and realized how familiar this had become. "Blondes" Certainly not...they have their uses of course but the color seems so unnatural to me." He stood and stepped to a different console. He started to input coordinates of his next stop into the computer. "Yes, a silly little piece of art from Moinnet. Someone new for the rich to collect."

He continued, "As for being on top of things...I have seen you have a real talent for it. I doubt you could be put into any position you didn't choose to be in the first place." He didn't look her. He simply worked his fingers across the console. Only after did he turn his head her way. "Or am I mistaken?"

She casually walked over, hoping to stand next to him to observe his consoles. She didn't much care what was on them; she mostly wanted to see if he trusted her enough to let her see his displays, let alone to let her stand next to him. He knew her as the assassin she was, though even that was just a small role she played. She grew more anxious the closer she got to him, but tried to remain calm, though she was extra flustered by the turn in the conversation. "Well, even if I get put into a position I didn't want to be in, I can usually get out of it just as easily. I'm pretty flexible, as you can only imagine."

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-08-27 23:33 EST
The console and it's coordinates didn't concern him. What concerned him was why she was here. He was pretty sure it wasn't the same one they were discussing. Just as sure as she had already told him several times that she was interested in the glass artwork.

"Mmm...I can imagine so..." He locked the console down, turning and sitting on the edge of it. "I would say that it is a constant surprise to see just how flexible you can be. Is there anything that makes one harder than another?" She was close again and he was feeling drawn to her, and caged at the same time. His urge was to move to another place and open up that distance once again. For comforts sake of course. "The replicator....I could get you a nice tea Zora." He started to rise from his place to see to an order that he wasn't even sure was coming.

Zora continued facing the console, not to spy, but to focus on something other than him for a moment. She said, facing away, "Oh, no, thank you. I just ate." Another one of her many lies, seeing as how changelings did not eat or drink. She turned and said, "But to answer your question, I think there is one thing that is harder for me?"

His journey to the replicator was halted. He swallowed once and counted his breaths before turning back to her. He was grateful she was looking he might not have been able to respond if he hadn't had to pretend. "Lately things have been..." He stopped abruptly as someting bit him in the shoulder blade. He reached for it and the world became white light and ozone.

Shifting Eyes

Zora looked concerned when Corrim stopped speaking mid-sentence. As she watched his eyes clear to a vacant stare, she instantly melted to her liquid state and flowed across the floor along the walls to avoid attention. She made her way around the bridge until she could see the perpetrator.

A tall Andorian stepped through the door, his milky eyes and grey whiet complexion marked him as one of the Aenar. Blind they were able to see through powerful telepathic abilities. He dismissed the idea that the Cardassian was talking to anyone specific as he couldn't perceive another in the room. He knelt over the prone body of Corrim and touched his head. He began to speak to Corrim though he knew the man couldn't really hear him. "I'm sorry about that...normally I would take what I want directly from your mind...but your species seems to have the ability to stop such things. This way...you won't resist me." He delved into Corrim focusing on the object he had purchased.

He stood and smiled blindly down. "You have been most helpful. My employer will be glad you saw wisdom." He turned away and strode off with precision. The doorway crossed and his path taking him directly to Corrim's room. He took a moment before approaching the bed, looking suddenly confused...

"Interesting...where is the second one?"

"Right here!" Zora was standing in the doorway, aiming Corrim's phased disruptor at him. She continued harshly, "Turn around slowly. Then tell me who you are working for."

He turned on her, licking his lips, and then smiling. "I was a little nervous there...You don't remember me...then again I am not surprised. I work for the person that you work for. I have had my eye on you...if you will pardon the irony." He chuckled at her blindly. "I was told to acquire the item if you failed to...I must say there will be disappointment when I report that you let this Cardassian have the bid."

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-08-27 23:35 EST
She stood up straighter, offended by his remarks against her. She had worked with the employer off and on for years. How dare they not trust her! She had always delivered. So what if this time she was just taking a side trip" With Corrim's innocent involvement, this whole mission could go a lot smoother in the long run. He had proved useful to her on her last assassination, after all. But she would not allow this Aenar to go back and rat her out to their employer. "How do you know that our employer didn't send you to me so I could kill you?" Even now, she weaved her web of lies.

He shook his head. "Because of the way he said you likely wouldn't need the backup. You haven't failed him yet. Still he knew there were a lot of interested parties, and some better funded might have come along." He watched her looking for some kind of opening. " I see that you were thinking along those lines too...here to romance it away are you? You should be careful of Cardassian's. They have peculiar tastes."

She relaxed her posture and said casually, "Why yes, he seemed to be accepting of my advances, so I thought I could take it from him easily, without having to spend anything. Why don't you just give me a little time to earn his trust a bit and gain the piece in a more" friendly way?"

He paused then shook his head again. "If only this had been obvious to us when you began. I am afraid it is too late for that. I have been activated and much like you, I haven't failed in my orders either. We are at an impasse it seems.? He made a quick move for the only weapon available to him, the tazer which had brought down Corrim.

As he reached for it, she hit him with the phased disruptor, instantly killing him. She watched his body fall to the floor. She sighed angrily. If the employer asked, she would simply say Corrim killed him when he discovered him trying to steal the piece. That was why she took his phased disruptor to begin with. She could have easily killed the Aenar herself, but everything needed to be played out just right to cover her tracks. She was good at it by now. She hurried back to the bridge to check on Corrim.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-08-27 23:43 EST
Corrim found himself laying on the deck on his back. His eyes opened on the face of Zora over him, that clinging dress gapping in ways that distracted despite his position. "There are much easier ways to get me on my back my Dear...was it too much to simply ask?" His joints ached and his head felt like it had been hit by a hammer. He was astounded that he found being cheeky so easy.

Her look of concern turned to one of amusement. She decided to let his comment go for the moment. She offered her hand to help him up. She said seriously, "An Andorian came aboard and stunned you. I followed him to your quarters. He must have transported one of the glass pairs back to his ship before I caught him. I had to use your phased disruptor on him. We should probably go take care of the body."

He accepted the aid to his feet unwilling to say how much he felt it was necessary. His eyes dropped to where his weapon had been. "Lucky he didn't spot you...or it might be the two of us just lying around and doing nothing..." He checked his coordinates once more and then a few other systems. "I suppose I should just have the words Welcome beam right in painted across the bow?"

He put a hand to her shoulder quickly when he became dizzy, needing her to steady him or fall once again. "Did he hit me in the head?" He ran a hand through his hair looking for lumps or worse. Her eyes widened when he put his hand on her shoulder. The touch startled her. "Um, no," she began awkwardly, "I don't think he did." She tried to steady herself on his behalf.

Corrim seemed to realize where his hand was and dropped it quickly. He looked away embarrassed, but made no apologies. He crossed the room and went down the corridor to his quarters. The body was crumpled against the wall and bed. "Aenar"! That explains the headache I suppose." The disruptor had a knockback feature that was high on his list of reasons for the purchase. The bed told a tale, one missing glass piece. Corrim thought the man might have found out which one was the right one. Zora waited next to him. She too would wait by the doorway of his room, just as she had done when she approached the Aenar. She wouldn't admit it, but she gave him the polite courtesy of not entering his room without permission.

"We should beam...? He stopped as the ship lurched beneath them.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-08-27 23:44 EST
Corrim grabbed the doorframe holding on till the shuddering stopped. Zora felt the sudden jarring of the ship, was propelled, and fell into Corrim. Feeling her going down as she struck his side, an arm wrapped around Zora pulling her between him and the doorframe. He didn't notice until the event was over the position that she was in or how tightly he had her pressed against the ship. He hesitated for a moment looking at Zora's face before stepping back from her and clearing his throat.

"Computer...analaysis...What was that?"

A decidedly female voice came back to him speaking clinically. Proximity alert, a vessel off the port bow has exploded.

"So much for visiting his ship...you are all right?"

Her eyes met his for a moment and she got nervous. She mirrored his step back with one of her own and clumsily hit the doorframe against her back. She leaned against it as if intending to hit it. She looked to the body in the room and seemed to answer to it instead of Corrim, "Oh, yeah, I'm fine. Thanks." She paused, then continued, "So, what should we do with him?"

Corrim thought for a moment, or perhaps he was just trying to gain control of himself. He went to the computer in his room and did a scan of the debris. "Sensors show elevated levels of....Dueterium' Very interesting...It would have done you no good my Aenarian friend." He gave a sly look to Zora. "Go to weapons control Zora...please." Corrim dipped down and hefted the body onto his back. He carried it easily making his way to the transport pad. "When I beam it out there I want you to ignite the remaining Dueterium with the forward weapons...It will look like an accident." She quickly did as he instructed.

There was no ceremony in how he dropped the body to the pad. It landed with a thud and Corrim suddenly feeling eighty kilos lighter took another look at where the leak was. He input the coordinates and beamed the body directly into the flow. He opened a channel to the bridge. "Fire when ready Zora dear...then you and I need to have a talk I believe."

She readied her fire. When she heard the last part of his statement, she fired a little more quickly than she intended, but it was still effective. She was nervous of what he felt the need to speak with her about.

The viewscreen would show her a distant flash fire that built in intensity. It would overwhelm the visuals forcing them to shut down in order to protect the visual systems. The gas trailed back to a containment unit which detonated once more and set the ship to shuddering again, though not nearly with the same intensity as previously.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-08-27 23:45 EST
It was Corrim's turn to appear behind Zora. He watched her with an eye to those well hugged curves. He closed his eyes and worked the dryness from his mouth. When he opened them again, his tone was perhaps harder than he had intended it to be, except that he didn't quite undersand who she thought she was coming back into his life this way. "Now...perhaps you will tell me exactly what it is you are doing here" Why you chose to have me procure the artwork" And perhaps how long before you decide to walk out on me again?!"

It was his last question that stung her the most, and the one she would choose to ignore. She prepared herself, turned around to face him, and looked him in the eyes defiantly. "I am here for the same reason you are " to get the glass art. I thought I was doing you a favor by making sure you were able to purchase the piece. I'd imagine if I bought it and left you with nothing, then you would have accused me of stealing it from you, instead!" She was ready for this battle, if it came to that. Part of her knew she deserved it.

Corrim noted the way she failed to answer his last question, the one he was afraid to hear the answer to. He would address her arguments though with his own. "If you are here for the same reason I am, then you know that the chances either of us could have come up with enough to purchase it are very small indeed. That isn't theft Zora...it's finance. Would I call it stealing" Hardly, would I mount a scheme to try and get it back...Of course, though it would be far more legitimate than being taken from behind and fed a line."

She stared at him, silently acknowledging what he was saying. "We had worked together so well in the past, I thought we could work together again. But it seems at though even my presence is some ordeal for you to overcome."

He wasn't going to be diverted easily. "You mean to say that you couldn't come to me...couldn't have contacted me" This is the second time you have found your way onto my ship. Tell me Zora, what would you believe?" They had worked well, and he had been prepared to believe that she was there because she wanted to be. "What is an ordeal...my very dear friend is knowing that the game is about to get a thousand times more complex." He blocked the next statement altogether, unwilling to tell her that he had hoped she would have joined him before. "What did you need from me this time Zora?" He had been easing closer to her as he cast words hard at her. When he was directly in front of her his tone lowered as in uncertainty. "What will you ask me to endure for you...again?"

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-08-27 23:46 EST
Zora looked down a moment, hating to speak the truth, "I honestly did not know you would be at the auction. Once I saw you, I made sure you could earn the piece." She looked back up at him. "I need your help this time. The artwork is much more important than you think. Many people are trying to get it, willing to kill for it." She felt uncomfortable, not because he was so close, but because she was being so frank. She continued, "I wouldn't have involved you in this, but you were there, trying to purchase the same piece. You would have been on their radar anyway for even bidding on it. I thought if I worked with you, I could warn you, and we could work together."

His arms crossed his chest, another evasion, was telling the truth so hard" She would never catch him dodging a question this way. Sure he had in the past been reasonably deceptive over his methods and his reasons. That was not the same thing though, he needed to be sure before he could trust her. Surely she could..."You aren't telling me anything Zora. Work together...yes we have done it and well, but what are we working on' What do you need from me?" He focused on her features already knowing how impossible she was to read.

She sighed. She could have come up with an ingenious plan by now, some great fantastical story to offer him, but she couldn't. Not now, anyway. He was wearing her down and now she caved. "Several people are after this glass art. The collection has four pieces. It's been told that the Promethean quartz glass art holds the secret to where a special crystal is located. The rumor is that this crystal steals and stores energy that can be used as a great power source."

He closed his eyes as he listened, he found it easier to think. "That would explain the Tal'Shiar agent." He turned his head eyes still closed. He could still see the auction floor and those who had been present. The auction had ties to the black market, despite the objections from the Ferengi. The anticipation of the room took on a new meaning. "You do understand that the desire to make a weapon from such a find would be a temptation too difficult to resist for many governments?" His eyes opened as he tried to impose upon her that he knew exactly what they were getting into.

Her eyes met his and she knew that she would be working with a worthy partner. "I have a vague idea of the potential it can hold to many governments.? She worked for many private and government organizations over many planets. Each could use the power crystal to their own personal gains. Some would consider it to be a weapon to end all wars while others would see it as the hope to build new planets and solar systems. The power that the crystal could hold was only limited to the rumors that circulated about it.

Shifting Eyes

"Does this vague idea cover what your employer has in mind" Will I be arming a group with an ultimate power" I must say that would put quite a dampener on working together in the future." There was of course the possibility that she wouldn't want to work with him after this was all said and done. He couldn't not monitor this situation at the very least.

She carefully answered his questions without revealing more than she had to. "The next step is trying to analyze the art, to see if it is one that holds the secret to the hidden location. Supposedly, the artist knew of the location and included details on one of the pieces." She looked at him with sincerity. She spoke what she knew of about the art, but she couldn't reveal more about her employer. Part of her regretted that and it showed.

His questions were not answered but he could see the conflict within her. He resisted the sudden urge to push a stray hair behind her ear. He found himself in another moment of indecision. To move either direction could have lasting effect. He couldn't find his voice, or the will to move much more than a slight nod of acknowledgement. When her eyes came back to him he cleared his throat and found his will once more. "I believe you...now have you your own transport...or will you stay with....me?" He stepped back ignoring every instinct that told him he was going the wrong way.

She looked down again as he stepped back. She never had her own transportation, her own ship, though she did her best to make sure everyone thought she had everything she could ever need. She silently questioned those motives now. Like he, she made a move she regretted. She looked at him in her usual confident way, and said, "My personal accommodations are not as homey as yours, besides, I think you might require my presence again if another Aenar should decide to board. If it's the same to you, I think your guest quarters will do nicely." She could do some research on the room's computer system once she got around his encryptions and get to the real database.

He felt safe enough, she would need to be able to translate the ledger that formed the core of all the information he had accumulated. Corrim had momentum now, a reason to be doing something...to be doing anything. "Fine then...I assume you do remember where it is. If you have a need of anything...towels run out, fresh sheets. Just let me know." He had cleared a few more feet between them now. "Please settle in and we can work out where it is we are going next. I'll see to straightening my quarters and analyzing the glass."

She nodded. She didn't want to say anything to disturb him more than she already did. She stood tall and, with a bold sway of her hips, she walked back to the quarters and closed the door behind her. He watched her move away from him. He said nothing nor did he move until the door closed. He smiled as he shook his head, the woman was a trial that much was sure. Funny though that the ship finally felt right to him. He spun heading in the opposite direction suddenly feeling the need to practice his penmanship.

Chapter Two: Recovery Mission

Corrim shook his head as yet another analysis of the glass sculpture came up negative. He had expected it to be that way, already he had scanned the thing in more ways than he ever thought he knew how to. There just seemed to be nothing spectacular about the formation. He had long since taken up his own research on the creation, or rather the creator. He had the tag, and the seal of authenticity. He did hope that the match to this piece hadn't been the one to hold the key.

Trust an artisan to make mirror images and only have one hold importance. It wasn't what he would do, not that what he would do mattered in this case. "This is not going well Zora. I don't think we have what we need here. I suppose I could be missing something but you said there were four pieces right?" He called up an image of the artist.

The name at the top of the page Pooley Moinnet gave a lot of information, more than Duvek really needed. A researcher doing a paper might need to know that he had graduated from the Andor school of art. Corrim found it more interesting to note that he was the founder of the Moinnet Art Studio. That he still worked from there. "My dear"would you like to accompany me to look at a little art' I realize it is short notice but, we should always make time for a little culture."

She nodded, indicating four pieces. She was standing next to him, looking at the information. "Art usually isn't included in my version of a fun time out, but because *you* are asking?? She looked at him and smiled playfully.

Whispered Words

Corrim had rented transportation, there was no telling what the weather would choose to do in a strange world. It had much the same look of so many other places he had been, cities with a lot of people always seemed to like to build up, or down. Or both as was the case here on Porter VII. Porter..the man had stumbled on the M class planet looking for a trade route that would cut time between Delta and Alpha quads.

He wasn't important, Corrim didn't know why he was thinking of the explorer except for the boredom. The laptop computer had a direct link to the ships onboard. Zora had it right now and Corrim watched as person after person passed by the studio. He had already been refused once no matter how charming he became. They either couldn't or wouldn't put him in direct contact with Pooley. He was betting on wouldn't.

Zora had been going over everyone of importance in the studio on Corrim's laptop. Every staff member. Every service crew that worked there recently. Every person who made purchases. She memorized every detail of every picture she could, just in case. She wore a simple blue shirt and black casual pants. She had on sports shoes that were comfortable and practical. Her whole outfit was casual, making sure she didn't stand out. This wasn't the first stakeout she had been on. She even got the silence part down. Though her silence was more from experience since she had never worked with someone before. Oh, she used people all the time, Corrim too, but this time was different.

Corrim adjusted his seat for the tenth time in the last hour. "I must say that I don't know what went wrong, I haven't been so put off since..." He looked at her and saw she wasn't really listening, not that he blamed her. He must have started and stopped this thought more than she could possibly bear. Movement of the door caught his eye. "Hold on now...isn't that what we are looking for Zora?" The blonde leaving the studio seemed to have the features they were looking for.

Zora perked up at the mention of the blonde. Trust be told, she had been silently listening to him the whole time. Every time he started the same thought, every breath he made, she listened intently. He didn't need to know that, though. She looked up and saw the woman, most likely in her early thirties. She looked just like the photo Zora memorized. But she needed to see all of her to get her just right. Stance, posture, body language were all things that were best viewed in real life. An image was as flat as the screen it was displayed on. She memorized everything, watching her, down to how she blinked. She continued to stare, but answered Corrim, "Yes, she's our ticket in."

Whispered Words

He looked from her to the woman moving down the sidewalk. "Do you need to get closer Zora" I don't have your talent for becoming someone of import. I do know that a performance depends very much on knowing your role though." He tracked the movement of the blonde just in case she disappeared around a corner. "I would think it is far more complicated to become a specific person than it is to be a simple dealer in fine art." He gave her a very suggestive wink followed by a very wolfish grin.

Zora nodded and said, "Yeah, let's go." She closed up the laptop and prepared to get out of the transport.

He stepped out of the transport waiting for Zora to catch up to him. Moments passed and she never emerged. He turned to find out what was keeping her but she was gone. He moved around the front of the transport looking down where she should have been but found nothing. The woman who was walking the alleyway was too tall to to be Zora, her hair was far too long and the outfit was completely wrong.

"Pardon me miss...Did you happen to see my companion?" Corrim hid his shock as the face that greeted him was Miss Moinnet herself. "Or...you could just announce yourself next time my dear." He had expected her to change, but how does one suddenly become taller"

Zora spoke in her normal voice. "Oh, I didn't mean we needed to follow her. I think I got everything I needed. I work fast, you know." She smiled her same playful smile, but with someone else's lips. She spoke in the woman's voice that she had heard from videos, "I believe Ms. Moinnet will be honored to introduce a simple trader to her father in the hopes of purchasing some of his beautiful glass art."

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-09-02 04:08 EST
Corrim came along side the woman formally known as Zora. There steps were in time with one another across the street and through the doorway of the Moinnet Studio. It looked to be under construction, Corrim reasoned that Pooley's windfall had led him desire to have renovations done on the place. He couldn't blame the man, most of these places were dreary, their furniture sparse. At least now the only dreary thing he spotted was the woman behind the desk that was eye him with suspicion. She was stern though she greeted Zora like she knew her well. The name on the desk said Daphne Balthazar.

This was one aspect of just dashing in that was harder for her. Meeting people she should know. But they didn't have time to waste on this. They weren't the only ones who were after this information. She smiled at Daphne and quickly decided how to address her. Should she be professional and call her Miss or Missus" Was the daughter more friendly with her and call her by her first name" She didn't care to make a mistake now.

Zora ignored the issue and said, "I met someone that was interested in my father's art. I'm just going to take him back." It was vague enough to work.

Corrim loved Zora's ability, the doors it opened for her were countless. He would find himself stuck at the front desk for hours trying to gain the trust of the grumpy woman who simply nodded at Zora and pressed the buzzer to let them back through the workshop. He wondered though if he would have found that method as satisfying as charming his way into a place. He bowed a head at the woman and smiled passively.

Once the door was opened to them, Corrim's demeanor changed to something far more business like. Zora walked in with a smile, but underneath, she was nervous. She escaped a minor issue with the secretary, but acting as the daughter to someone could prove more complicated.

The man leaning over the bench was working in a medium that Corrim would have found fascinating if he weren't here for specific information.

Corrim looked to Zora smiled brightly and became the trader he was. "My dear! Oh I really didn't expect to be honored so by the presence of Pooley Moinnet. I am quite the fan of your work Master Pooley. Most specifically your glass art...that holds a large interest for me. Did you know that your most recent sale topped out at...what was it now...In the neighborhood of one thousand bars of gold pressed latinum?" He moved through the shop speaking a little louder than he perhaps needed to, hand waving as he spoke and emphasizing astonishment and awe.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-09-02 04:14 EST
Pooley jumped at the voice that didn't belong to anyone he knew. He straightened and was far taller than what Corrim was expecting to find. The weathered face looked as though it had been toughened by the sun and a thousand street fights. Piercing blue eyes swept first across Corrim and then to Zora.

"Jeses H'send you out for coffee you bring me back a fan who looks like something out of my shoe closet. " He peered at her more closely eyes narrowing and mouth firming beneath the white mustache and beard. "Hell girl you didn't even remember the coffee?"

She smiled a genuine smile. She was happy it seemed to be going ok so far. "Sorry, I just ran into him and knew I should bring him here to meet you." She purposefully didn't introduce him. To her, names were just thinks used once and thrown away. She didn't know if he felt the same, but she was respectful enough to give Corrim the option of giving whatever name he liked. She glanced at him, hoping that he too picked up on the fact that the daughter only went for coffee and had the potential of returning soon. They would need to get the information they needed quickly.

"How many goddamn times do I have to say I don't want to be disturbed while I am..."

Corrim cut Pooley's rant off moving in front of Zora the reflective Turquoise tunic picking up sunlight from the skylight and sending sparkles across the walls behind Pooley. "Completely my fault Master Pooley...I assure you..." he smile and gave a half bow. "I can be quite persistent and convincing when I need really want something." He tilted his head at Pooley the web beginning to wind itself around those present. "Toran...Shilo Toran, I have had the privilege of seeing some of your glass pieces lately and would be willing to part with a small fortune to be able to purchase anything out of the Promethean Series. I know I saw one go recently but there were four I am told...tell me...I beg you that you have at least one of those left."

She was worried an issue like that might arise. His daughter knew not to bring someone back, but she didn't. She looked down, as not to look at Corrim. She didn't want him to see how grateful she was for his save.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-09-02 04:17 EST
There was the twittering of electronic tones from the pocket of the tall artist. He looked at the name on the phone he shook his head and tried to look directly through Corrim to Zora as he opened it and put it to his ear.

"Yeah"!" Pooley answered.

The voice on the other side was too soft for Corrim to hear Cardassian's were known to have poor hearing. Pooley continued, "Really...strange as I am goddamn looking at her right now...I don't know where you got her phone friend but you should b..." The shriek on the other end of the phone was much more audible but had fewer words. Corrim thought he could make out daddy and help.

Zora turned to Corrim with a look of panic while he looked back at Zora.

Pooley's eyes grew wider. "What do you want"!" There was more of the lower tones on the phone, Pooley managed to get a "But' in before another terrified shriek came. "Okay...okay, I will have them for you...I..." The dial tone was all that met him then.

Pooley looked at Corrim and Zora then with a heat that could almost be felt physically. "Just who the hell are you people anyway! Where's my daughter?"

Corrim ran the events through his head, It seemed they should have followed the girl afterall. "Yes...well, there is a point at which a ruse must be abandoned my dear. Such a shame all the work we put into your makeup. It's true that we are not who we claim to be. I am interested in those pieces, and this seemed the best way...What do they want?? He circled the room keeping Pooley's eyes on him. The Cardassian wasn't sure what Pooley was capable of, his movement was meant to keep Pooley nervous. If the man pulled a weapon, well it was harder to shoot in opposite directions than two targets close together. Zora was connecting the dots as well. She was only upset she wasn't ruthless enough to think of kidnapping his daughter first. Her posture returned to her own loose and confident one, knowing it was of no use to copy now.

Whispered Words

Pooley's gaze followed Corrim where the voice was coming from. "They want the same thing you want...and I still can't do it...Those pieces are gone. I know where but I can't get them...not on time. If I call anyone then they'll just kill her and then come after me. Hell I could take em coming for me if I knew she was safe."

Zora's eyes seemed to be her own now and they looked at Corrim with a silent question. She walked around to stand next to him as she spoke to Pooley in her own voice. "Mr. Moinnet, maybe you would be more able to help us without the added stress. What if my business associate and myself retrieved your daughter?" She continued to look at Corrim. It was clear she was determined to rescue the woman regardless.

Pooley looked at her now. "You really don't look that much like her...the eyes are all wrong. What can you and mister Toran do they will be expecting those pieces. They want them brought today in..." He looked to the clock on the wall. "Three hours they want to meet...we couldn't even get to the art in that amount of time." Corrim stepped forward he looked at Pooley seriously before speaking. "Mr. Pooley...I find that people see what they expect to see. If not then my associates disguise wouldn't have gotten us inside. Perhaps there is something here similar enough that will fool them at a distance. A few moments is really all we need to free your daughter."

While Corrim took a step forward, he blocked Pooley's view of her. She stepped forward, appearing as a mirror image of Pooley. Pooley's eyes went wide when he saw himself, he nodded more out of astonishment than in agreement. Corrim however was poised and waiting for that opportunity. "I believe with the piece we have...close will be good enough Mr. Moinnet...three close, one near perfect Pooley and one actual piece...Why there is more to a plan here than that time on Rigel II with the Countessa Dupre." He gave a chuckle that sounded far more confident than he really felt. They needed this though...and he would be at his best to make it happen.

Pooley found himself relenting to the confidence in the Cardassian, and the enigma of his doppelganger standing before him. "Okay...there isn't much choice now is there?"

Overcast skies met them when they began their individual journeys. Duvek had left first because he needed to have time to scout the area. The building itself was very large 400 feet long, and easily 150 wide. That meant a lot of ground to cover. The size would perhaps be the most fortunate part of this because there would be no way to watch everything. The fact that the place was nearly deserted would hinder his movements though. Zora was alone, but Duvek had no worries about this.

She had proven herself to be quite capable of defending herself. He couldn't quite figure out why that made him smile. The building had sixty doors on the dock that was raised five feet above the parking lot. Plenty of places to hide among the empty trailers that seemed to take a third of those doors. Corrim noticed that two doors were occupied by compactors presumably for trash. It was here that he would make his entry.

Zora was on her own. She hid out for a short time back at the artist's studio to watch him and learn his movements, his dialog, his personality. She usually like to devote much more time to watching and studying someone. But time was not a luxury she had. The men who kidnapped the artist's daughter demanded he bring them his artwork in three hours. It had been well over two hours since their phone call and Zora hurried to the drop off point, hoping Corrim would meet her soon. She would get into and continue her preparations there.

Two men moved into the middle of the parking lot, the first taller than the second though the second seemed to be more powerfully built This place was good for them because it was separated from the heavy traffic of the street by a bend in the entryway. It made it possible to see out from where they were but a passing car wouldn't have time to see what was going on inside.

The first, dark haired and rough looking wiped his palms nervously on his pants. "Th' hell we doin here anyway' I can think of a thousand places better suited to an exchange...more remote...easier to do what we have to."

The second looked at the other critically before speaking. "Shows what you know, besides this is the bosses place you know...and as good as abandoned tonight. These manual labor types love there down time." He looked back to the van that was parked further in and across from the traffic office nestled nicely between doors 40 and 41.

Pooley Moinnet, the artist they were waiting for, walked up to the men from down the street. He walked with a worn stride, confident and powerful, making it clear he could handle men half his age. He watched the two with unwavering eyes, sixing them up with each step. He was holding the same piece of artwork that Corrim had purchased. Zora knew Corrim would probably be upset if he saw that she was prepared to lose the piece in a potential scuffle, but she figured he would be ok once he saw his actual piece still on his ship, safe and sound. She looked around, trying to see Corrim, trying to see the girl, but saw neither.

The short one elbowed the taller and pointed. As one they pulled weapons from the backs of their pants. Simple projectile weapons that they held in a crook armed fashion at their waists. "That's far enough...and a little light I'm thinking granpa." He narrowed eyes at Pooley and then indicated the piece in his hands. "You know the deal was for all of them...and I hope you got the others stashed somewhere close or we're gonna have a little fun with you and your daughter."

Zora spoke in Pooley's gruff voice, "I don't know who the hell you people think you are, but you are barking at the wrong dog, kid. You ain't getting a piece more "til you show me my daughter."

The door was far enough away that it made little disturbance. Corrim move quietly, doing his best to keep his footsteps from echoing and giving him away. Two more thugs on the inside. One looking very much like shorty on the outside. Their voices carried to Corrim, even though his hearing was not so good as some other species. "no no no. Place like this has whatsit called Transport inhibitors....I mean with all that traffic in orbit....you know how easy it is to pilfer an entire hold full of goods" Same with the trailer little miss is in."

The taller of the two nodded as though it made perfect sense to him. "So how you know that?"

The other closed his eyes and sighed. "Simple...I know what Shorty knows...like I know that he is out there with big man Moinnet right now...and arguin." Corrim took that in and suddenly smiled to himself.

Duvek moved to the top of a ramp and leaned against the doorway that framed it. There were two things he noted, the first was that the men were standing outside door fortysix. "How delightful to find you both...I have been walking this place for what seems like hours and..." Two pairs of eyes found the Cardassian and hands made quick moves to hidden weapons. "Oh...by all means..." He produced his disruptor and moved forward. "Take those out and, place them on the floor." There was a smile on Corrim as the two complied.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-09-03 02:18 EST
Outside Shorty stiffened, he kept his eyes on Pooley and spoke to the taller accomplice. "Go help the others...seems art man didn't come by himself."

Zora watched through Pooley's eyes as the men shifted. She knew Corrim was on the job, though she didn't know how they knew. She watched as the one ran off as instructed. Pooley still held the glass art piece in his hand. Shorty still had the projectile gun pointed at him. Analyzing it, Pooley began walking towards him. The man said, "I'm already agitated, old man. Stop now!"

Pooley didn't follow the instructions like Shorty's wingman. With his next step, Shorty shot a few rounds into him. Pooley held still as the bullets flew into him without a scratch. Shorty stared at him, then continued firing as Pooley walked up to him and bashed the glass art piece into his chest, knocking him back, and knocking him out. The glass art was still intact. Zora laid the piece on the ground next to Shorty with Pooley's hands, then began to flow into the piece.

The gunfire had eyes turning towards the wall, behind him he heard a shout and turned to fire at the new comer. The phazed disruptor burst a compressed bolt into the man and sent him sprawling. The others started to move then too, while Corrim was turned away, but he had closed with them. The shorter of the pair bent to pick up a weapon and found a knee to the side of the head instead. Corrim found himself facing the pistol of the other. His hand was shaking which figured into Corrim's favor. He smiled calmly at the man and spoke like he hadn't just killed a man.

"You know, there is no stun setting on this, now I am sure I could survive a blast from your gun...but the return fire is a guaranteed death for you...if not immolation. No body to be mourned....no one to even know you were here." The gun fell from the shaking hand and the eyes were nearly terrified. Corrim believed his appearance was aiding that fact. "Now just open the door and let out my prize and then you can live with what we will call a very nasty bump."

Whispered Words

The girl seemed to be completely hysterical when she emerged from the trailer, Corrim was tempted to knock her unconscious as well, just to shut her up. He made the last thug lay down on the ground half in the trailer and half out. The over head door was pulled down on top of him just before Corrimp shot the spring dropping three hundred pounds of door onto the man to keep him in place. He bent and picked up the pistol and fired off one shot to tell Zora he was safe and on his way out of the warehouse.

His head aching from the blow, Shorty opened his eyes and sat up quickly on the ground. He quickly looked around for the old man, but saw no one. In fact, the idiot dropped the art piece in his escape. Shorty eagerly grabbed the glass as he stood up. He turned to run back into the warehouse to check on the others. One of the over head doors opened and the girl jumped from it, followed by something else. When he saw the odd looking creature, he thought better of going over there. He hit a button on a device on his belt and shimmered away in a few short seconds.

He only had a moment, but Corrim saw more in that blink of time than someone else might have. First he noticed that the doppleganger to the man he had kneed was beaming away with the artwork so recently acquired. Second was that Zora was no where to be found. He remembered the sound of gunshot and jumped down and rushed into the parking lot to try and get to her, but she wasn't there either.

What had she done" Given up their one and only link to the crystal" Had she run...or worse had she been taken?

Corrim looked at the girl with him, he had no time to work on this now. He took her by the wrist and beamed away, as well.

Shorty had taken the piece of glass art to the ship. His supervisor was upset that they had lost the artist's daughter, but it was worth it to get another piece of the glass art collection. Shorty placed the new one by the one they had gained earlier. After they left, the new piece began to flow off the table and form into Zora. She picked up the other piece and carefully made her way to the ship's transporter. Luckily, most of the crew still seemed to be on the planet and she was able to work her way to her destination easily. Before transporting out, she decided to short out a few of the ship's navigational equipment. She liked to have a little fun, too. Once she was back safely on the planet with her newly acquired artwork, she decided to find Corrim.

Point to point transporting had gotten him and Pooey's daughter to the studio. This planet seemed to have an unnerving amount of transport inhibitors. Corrim supposed it held to logic as they were in the middle of space that was heavy with pirate clans of the Orion Syndicate. He managed to get them close enough to walk though the girl becoming less hysterical. She had this annoying habit of trying to cling to his side. He allowed it only because it was better than trying to explain why she was shrieking. He couldn't seem to get the loss of Zora out of his head though. His mind was racing on scenarios where she had played him again and made off with the artwork. He would prefer that to one of the alternatives that meant she was lying back there in a ditch and he had done nothing about it. Pooley Moinnet was grateful about the safe return of the girl, and gave everything he had on the firm used to broker the pieces for auction.

He could see that Pooley had been way under compensated for the spike in value of his pieces. That wasn't something that concerned Corrim though the man would benefit from this windfall long enough to gain assets and become very wealthy. Regardless the man had left him with less information than Corrim would have liked. He only seemed to have a bead on one piece. It was this that found Corrim staring at the computer looking for any sign of the partner he was missing.

Corrim used the navigational computer to lower his orbit and try to get a better scan of the area. The subspace traffic was making it difficult to make anything out. He started to pick up a signal at eighty thousand kilometers, one that he hadn't expected to see again. He opened the channel and paused to listen, just incase she were in no position to speak. He started to get a lock on that signal in the hopes that it was still in Zora's keeping.

Zora kept the comm device he had given her the last time they worked together. She repeated her prior words to him after activating the device.

"Miss me?"

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-09-03 02:21 EST
The cocky way she spoke to him brought his smile out. Safe at the least, but with a lot to answer for. "Does the tortured miss the torturer my dear woman?" He tapped a few places on the touch screen and the transporter activated. He strengthened the signal to account for the excessive feedback from those inhibitors. The pad lit up and Zora's form materialized before his eyes.

Zora held her arms behind her back, beginning to casually toward him. She figured he was too smart and knew her too well by now to know that she must be hiding something from him. But this was her little game of trust. She walked slowly and confidently as she spoke in the same manner, "Well, I think you would like to know I brought a surprise for you."

He watched her approach, but suddenly felt off. True he did enjoy watching her move towards him that way. That look that spoke of knowing secrets could drive him mad. He loved to know secrets, to know where to find them, to work them out of people without them ever suspecting that he would use it for his own purposes. "I hope the surprise is why the hell you decided to use the real piece in this escape plan. Why you changed the plan without consulting me?" His voice was growing in volume as she crossed the room to him hands hidden behind her back that way hiding away the gift and distracting him with how it emphasized the rest of her.

Zora walked all the way up to him, staring intensely into his eyes. She stopped barely a foot away from him and left her stare linger a moment before slowly bringing her arms forward, revealing the new glass art piece. It barely fit between them. She looked down at it, then returned her smiling gaze to him.

Corrim never took his eyes from her face as his hand closed over the sculpture. He set it on the console to his left. "So you trade one for another and seek to distract me with..." She was too close and he couldn't think what to call her movements. "You left me with a distraught woman, a father who in his dire need forgets to mention that he hasn't got but a pittance of what we require. And me here searching high and low for you...Hours Zora...all because you changed the plan...didn't tell me....and left me..." To worry, were the words he didn't say.

He grasped her shoulders to push her back from him. Not hard...well harder perhaps than he had desired...why did she make him so angry' Shouldn't he be relieved that she was okay' He was that actually, but that only seemed to twist him up further as he felt she was using this to artwork to make him feel foolish. She had changed plans though, no indications of what she was doing, no way to know where to look for her. It felt like she had a new plan and was only using him. Well he knew she was using him, but he had figured that he wouldn't need to worry about her running until they had gone further together.

Her eyes widened defiantly as she took a step back from his shove. She paused a moment, calming herself, knowing he had no idea what he was toying with. She relaxed her posture, putting a hand on her hip. She spoke bluntly, "You'll find the piece you purchased in its place." She knew he was right though, she shouldn't have acted without warning him. She added with a soft sense of sincerity, "I did not think to consult you. I am not used to working so closely with someone. You will either have to trust me, or not."

He stepped back further, and looked over at the new piece taking in all that she had said. "Trust you..My dear I don't even trust myself...you know more about me than anyone outside of..." He wouldn't say exactly who he he meant. In fact his mouth seemed to clamp down on the words even as he moved to place the console between them. "I trust you as far as I can trust anyone...I trust you further in most cases."

Hands, he needed to do something with his hands. The artwork went into them and his eyes dropped away from Zora. "The artist...do you suppose these shapes called to him?" Change subjects...that should help.

She tilted her head. She wondered how much of his scattered thoughts and emotions were related to her. She tried not to assume, as a general rule, especially when the assumptions were in her favor. She looked at the piece and answered, "I suppose. Did you get any information from him about the other two pieces?" She looked back up at him.

The eyes widened, the smile came out once more. "I have some, but only on a single piece. We were duped I suppose by the man, but I think we can manage to put together a plan. The main computer has what we need...I have taken the time to give you a profile and permissions that will make it easier for you to use."

She didn't show her smile. She simply nodded and said, "It's about time. Let's get working on a plan, then."

Chapter Three: Museum Procurement

The museum had closed and the patrons had long since moved to their homes, the doors to the place locked and the alarms on all the art were set. A simple door alarm wouldn't keep Corrim out, and if not him then the talents of Zora were more than a match for that poor alarm. The corridors were empty, and Corrim actually wished he could have the place just this way to walk through it with someone and actually appreciate the framed artwork on the walls. There was no time though for sightseeing or appreciating fine things, unless they happened to walk in front of you every so often. There were guards on duty, but this late the crew was skeleton at best. Corrim figured that was how they were able to get their hands on this piece was to go chincy with the security measures.

There were voices ahead, strange because they had spent time learning the routes of the guards. Corrim looked to Zora closed mouthed and peeked around the corner doing a quick count and coming back. He held up four fingers and indicated that they were armed with some low tech projectile weaponry. This made sense because any tech weapon would have set off alarms.

Zora nodded to him silently. She was just hoping to get in and get out as smoothly as possible. She was definitely not prepared for this, without a weapon. She rarely needed one anyway. The shapeshifter had enough advantages on her own to make due. Her matte black catsuit was a little more than a second skin. She walked up to Corrim and lightly placed her forefinger over his lips. The black skin quickly shifted to a tight, bright pink blouse and dark grey slacks. Her flat soled boots turned to patent black heels, giving her a few extra inches of height. She smiled at him and dropped her hand from him. She began to casually walk out around the corner towards the men.

Corrim had enough problems keeping the outfit from taking his focus. The touch on his lips just reminded him how long it had been since he was last touched. That had been her as well. He smiled against the finger as he remembered that time. Her shift hadn't surprised him except for the extent of it. He had expected a change of face but the outfit was not considered. Part of him wanted to watch her walk the corridor in her heals like that but he knew that would only give her away.

The men stopped, seeing the young woman. She said quickly, before they got a chance to become nervous about letting their weapons show, "Oh, good. Security guards. I'm so glad I bumped into you. Can you possibly tell me where the exit is" I thought it was this way' " She began to seductively walk past them and they were turning to watch her. She turned back before any had a chance to respond and said to them, while playfully wrapping herself around the closest's arm, "Oh my, well, I certainly would love an escort to my vehicle" in fact, if anyone would like to take me home?" They were all facing her now, looking away from the corner where she left Corrim. She continued, "because I would love to introduce you to my friend?"

Corrim waited listening for the sounds of them changing positions before moving silently down the hall. He saw her take the guards arm and knew it was time to strike. Perhaps the elbow to the large fellows head was a little harder than it should have been, because he dropped quickly and unceremoniously into the man in front of him. Two hundred pounds on the back of your knees has the same result every time. You go down. He would be dealt with quickly enough but the other pair were still up. Corrim hoped Zora noted the man was still conscious and could deal with it as he twisted to the right and locked in a choke hold on man number two.

As Corrim began his strike, Zora quickly began her own. Zora tightly held onto the arm, preventing her target from reaching for his weapon. She locked his arm behind him as he turned with the other man to see the onslaught occurring next to them. From behind him, she kicked out one of his knees sharply with her piercing heel, forcing him to his knees, breaking his arm as she forced it up as he fell down. She quickly jumped over the doubled over man and jump kicked the other man who had so far remained unscathed.

The lightning reflexes of Zora were appreciated easily as much as her figure. The popping of a heel into soft tissue, the crack of bone. He couldn't really explain what it was he was feeling at that moment. A strange mix of admiration and something more. He finished his man off with a bone ridged fist to the temple. Enough to leave the man with a headache after a long nap. The weapon at his side was quickly scooped from the holster as the man dropped away.

"That my dear while fun and very nice to watch, has put our timetable in a slight pinch. Not to mention that we now have a few fallguys for this." He looked towards the room where the men had been stationed and the intricate maze of laser trip lights. "I hope you aren't injured and can still manage the movements."

Zora smiled and said simply, "It would take a bit more than that for me to jump out of my skin." Slowly, making sure to take her time about it so he could see more of the process, her clothes shifted back to her black skinned catsuit that covered all but her head and neck. She remained in the heels though, just to ruffle a few of his scales.

The change was so enticing to watch, the very process of it pulled at him nearly as badly as that black matte catsuit that left him with a desire to know things he shouldn't be distracted by. "You'll have to give me notes on what it does take then Zora dear."

She smiled at his remark. "You know what does it for me" Expensive artwork.? She grinned playfully as she turned and headed for the entrance of the room. She looked in at the glass artwork. The lasers guarding the glass piece were plainly visible, hoping to intimidate any would be thieves. They swayed in random patterns, cutting off paths as soon as paths where open.

Corrim let out a chuckle at Zora's comment, though his eyes did fall on the glass piece they were after. "I suppose I understand the appeal of a finely sculpted piece, all those smooth curves and the attractive colors. I have an idea, I'm gonna set up our quartet here to accidentally trip an alarm after we leave."

Zora nodded silently. She was honestly more focused on her task. She didn't want to seem as though it took as much effort from her as it did.

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-09-08 23:08 EST
Zora walked up to the door way and began to carefully glide through the lasers. At times, she appeared to move like a double jointed contortionist as she moved through openings. Other times, she jumped and vaulted like an acrobat in the air as paths were cut off from the ground. She was just few feet away from the glass. She could see the lasers moving together to block her path. She refused to let him see her lose focus. She simply needed to back up and move to the other side of the piece, though it took a little more effort than that.

She slowly bended over backwards onto her hands, rotating slightly to her side. She moved her legs and thighs through the narrow opening just forming. She subtly lowered her heeled feet to the ground and pushed up off the ground to right herself on the other side of the piece. She stood next to it and picked up the piece. She smiled at Corrim. Her eyes widened as she realized it'd be a little trickier to get back with the piece, but her smile remained on her face as to not show her sudden concern. She had no other choice. She engulfed the piece inside of her and started slowly on her way back to him.

He found himself leaning lightly on the door, his fingers on the frame slipping down wood in a soft caress as he watched her move. Corrim knew what did it for him too, precision of movement. The stretching and bending pulling his eyes along her curves in a way that stirred something within that he couldn't quite name. He was barely breathing when she reached the piece. He couldn't remember what he was supposed to be doing, he was too anxious with her progress. The catch of breath the way piece was taken inside of her. He swallowed and couldn't help but moisten his lips and be hypnotized by the woman in the room.

Though she had to change a few steps along the way, Zora was able to mimic much of her path over, only moving in reverse this time. She eventually made her way to Corrim and ended with her last safe step out of the lasers directly in front of him. She would kept he piece safely embedded in her torso for now. She blinked as she saw him simply staring at her. Secretly, she loved every second he looked at her and hoped he saw every intricate movement she made.

"Weren't you supposed to be doing something?"

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-09-08 23:12 EST
Corrim's eyes were on her face as she spoke to him the urge to touch her warring with the urge to kiss her. His fingers lowered from the door frame and stopped just short of the mark. He drew an unsteady breath and nodded the fingers closing as the hand dropped to his side. "Quite right my dear, I should have been gone a while ago." He produced a new com device and reached for her hand to press it into her palm. "Get out of here and let me do what I have to. I'll meet you back at the ship." He backed away from her stumbling slightly over an arm on the floor but he had to force his eyes from her and turn to disappear down the hall.

She was stunned a moment when he moved that close to her, only to place the device in her hand. She was so grateful that he turned away from her after stumbling. It was her turn to stare at him before he disappeared. She smiled a genuine smile then, something just for her, a secret thought, just for a moment. She then hit the button to beam back to this ship to wait for him there.

Security was avoided, as Corrim moved through the building. His destination was the control room. It was important to make sure the men in the hall were blamed for the disappearance of the art. The noise in the hallway brought the guard in the rooms head out just where Corrim needed it to knock him out. He removed the man's shoes and socks and pulled the shoe laces out. Corrm tied the guards thumbs and big toes together with the laces and set to erasing the footage. He initiated his own beam out just as the first guards were entering the hall that held the unconscious would be thieves. As he beamed out he wondered if the talented woman would still pull at his attention and leave him vulnerable.

Zora was waiting in his chair on the bridge, legs crossed, facing the doorway, waiting for him. She remained in her catsuit just to test him. She left the newest piece of their collection on a console beside her. She tilted back in the chair so he could see the invitation on the screen as she said, "I may have found another piece. Care to join me for a party??

Chapter Four: The Collector

The car had been provided to them through Zora's employer. The man remained a mystery to Corrim as Zora had insisted on taking that meeting alone. Still he managed to provide a limo and give credence to the roles that Zora and Corrim would be playing. The grounds were well lit, Corrim thought it was likely a look at what I have aren't you jealous move. The estate was surrounded by trees, they served a dual purpose. The first being they ensured a bit of privacy from the neighbors, the second was that they hid the wall from the manner house in an effort to make the resident rich man feel like he wasn't in a cage of his own making. In the distance the ocean could be heard breaking on the private beach, the sound was soothing.

The manner itself was a solidly built stone walled three story mansion. The granite walls were broken often by windows, there were balconies at some places where windows became glass doors. The line of cars spoke of wealth coming to for a free feast on the reputation they had garnered. They waited their turn at the front door to be let out by a large necked man wearing a tailored suit and carrying a clipboard. The gun under his arm flashed a couple of times, a simple means of intimidation. It was a way of saying that problems would be dealt with.

His suit was a dark green, well tailored, something he picked up in the Beta Ursae sector. He hadn't needed to wear it in quite some time. Fortunately he hadn't gained much weight in the wrong areas to give him a need to purchase something new. He wore subdued tie with red hues to match his date for the evening. Zora had been quiet for the ride, Corrim speaking of some of the places he had been to and parties thrown. He supposed it was possible that she was just distracted the way she let him ramble on.

The door was opened and Corrim slipped out of the limo turning to offer his hand to Zora. She smiled as she took Corrim's hand. She had let him ramble during the ride. She did not want to have to answer questions about her employer, her job with them, her past. It was easier to let him do the talking. He excelled at that anyway. She was a different kind of performer, and she was performing her role now.

Shifting Eyes

Still smiling, for those in view of them, Zora stepped out in a bold red, floor length, strapless dress. Her high slit in her gown exposed her leg and transparent heels. Corrim's eyes tried not to linger too long on an exposed leg as a heeled foot hit the driveway. Her crystal jewelry covering her neck reflected much of the light. She knew exactly how to dress to maximize her attention, for better or worse. Better for her, worse for her victim, though her victim was not Corrim tonight.

Zora let go of his hand and wrapped her arm around his as she stood next to him. She pushed her chest against the back of his arm, burying herself under him slightly. By positioning herself so close, she could be seen as unobtainable, at least to the one man who had the ability to steal her away, the rich, art collector host.

Corrim was conscious of exactly how close she was to him, it was just a role so why did he enjoy it this much' Why did that look possessive look on his face feel so right' He turned his face to look at her a smile falling across his lips. He spoke softly as they confirmed their invitation. He slid a hand inside his coat and pulled free the cards while the man with no neck perused the list and nodded. The woman was always surprising him. He spoke quietly to her as they walked away from the security detail. "You look beautiful my dear, I don't know if I said that before." He turned away from her after saying it, keeping his gaze on the door and the two man crew that opened it for them.

Zora continued smiling, the look seemingly permanent on her now. She spoke sweetly, though her sharp tongue was still at it. "You may have mentioned it a few times before, along with everything else you went on about this evening." She nodded to the men that held open the door.

First thing he had to do was to stop dwelling on the way Zora's dark hair only accentuated the dress that much more. He took a deep breath and looked about the entryway. The crystal chandelier hung from a vaulted ceiling. There was a large stairwell that broke at the second floor and split into two winding staircases. The dark wooden banister made stood out against the pearl walls of the parlor. There was music coming from the doorway to the left, and the general movement of the people was to begin there. He guided Zora in that direction though she needed little in the way of encouragement. She knew well what she was doing.

Whispered Words

"I wonder exactly where our host is at this moment, it seems too early for him to make an entrance."

Zora was barely listening to him when he spoke. She was too preoccupied memorizing everyone and their dates and their movements. The shapeshifter may need to impersonate any of them at any time. She leaned in, appearing to whisper in his ear seductively, "It doesn't matter where he is yet. Let's take the opportunity to wander a bit." She returned to her normal stance and said, "Let's go view the famous collection, my darling."

Corrim nodded his assent to her. He tried to keep the smugness from his face when she called him "my darling' it was just a role for her right' He looked at the exits, the eyes tracking the movements of the people. He took a glass of something from a passing tray, it was best to look exactly like what he was, a party goer.

After he took a sip of the drink, Zora playfully grabbed his glass. She placed it against her lips and tilted the glass back. To anyone looking, she was simply taking a sip from a lover's glass. When she handed it back to him, we would notice it was as full as when she took it. She smiled at him, a different smile than the one she wore all night, a secret smile.

He took stock of the traffic and figured that the greatest percentage of the people were looking for a bite to eat. He took a different direction though mingling across to a lesser used doorway and the direction of those more interested in art. "I am very excited to see the collection, I've heard many good things about it.? Together they moved into rooms with track lighting falling on artwork in ways that Corrim was sure a professional advised was the best. He let her observe the hard points while he droned on about individual artists.

While he rambled on again, she took note of the various security measures put in place and tried to figure ways around them. She would look to him, as if interested in his details about artist, but she smiled when she saw him looking at the same security points she noticed.

Whispered Words

Corrim was growing used to having her so close to him. The touch, and the small laughs as she playfully took his drink. The collection lining the walls took them down the hall, the room with walled off with velvet cord was dark. Corrim could see that there were pieces inside, though the one they were looking for wasn't immediately obvious. He hated to let go of Zora to get confirmation, and the idea of a lookout was abandoned. He stepped across the barrier and she accompanied him. Even as they walked into the room that was clearly off limits for the party, and clearly without anyone else in it, she still stayed wrapped around his arm.

It took a little time to find the piece they were looking for. The glass art had been put aside in a way to make it seem as though it were little more than a pretty paper weight. Corrim let his gaze fall away from it to see Zora's reaction to it. What he found was that her cheek curved away from him in a way that he was grateful for the drink in his hand. It prevented him from reaching out to touch her. "I think I've found it my dear." He put that smile on his face and was unable to remember the last time it was this hard to maintain. She saw it and contained her excitement. It was not long lived.

Zora could hear someone approaching. She grabbed the drink from his hand as she turned to face him. She pressed herself against him and lunged forward, passionately kissing him, entangling her tongue with his. Corrim was glad of how quickly she reacted, the drink sloshed to lower the level and give the impression of drinking. He had little time to concentrate on it though as he fell into that kiss. His fingers pressed into her back, holding her to him. His grip tightening as the man sounded off at them, the dance of her tongue impossible for him to ignore.

As the man came into view he spoke harshly, "Hey, you two lovebirds. This area's off limits. If you want a room, you gotta take that up with the boss."

She let go of Corrim's lips and smiled a wide toothy grin to the man. She said with a bit of a slur, sloshing the drink in her hand, "Oh, I'm terribly sorry. We just couldn't resist." She took a step and turned back to face Corrim. With her back to the guard, she smiled a genuine smile to Corrim. She grabbed his hand, turned around and began to drunkenly walk him back towards the other guests.

Corrim fixed the man with a smile and moved along with the slightly unsteady Zora, looking for all the world as though he was supporting her. "Oh, I don't know my dear, I think perhaps a room is exactly what we need." His hand was still on her back, low and suggestive. The man watching them would suspect nothing more than a couple trying to find a place alone. When he suggested a room, Zora stopped mid-step, turned around, and glared at him. She then hung onto his neck, acting as though she needed the extra support. By the time they got to the other guests, she regained much of her prior gait.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-09-11 00:10 EST
Heath Vikian, their host was easy to spot when they made it back to the party. He was the one surrounded by smiling nodding faces as he droned on about how he came by this piece or that. The red fabric of Zora's dress seemed to attract him like a bull waiting to charge, or was it the enticing sway. Corrim hated him instantly, he had that pay attention to me smugness that turned his stomach. Corrim saw the way he hurriedly spoke with his other guests, and the way his eyes seemed to single Zora out. He bit his tongue and held his face straight. The man put a velvety smooth hand Corrim's way, what could he do but take it.

"Heath Vikian, I don't believe I have had the pleasure mister?" The question as to his name was certain to come. Corrim had considered trying to pull off an alias, but he would receive more marks as a broker than some rich hanger on.

"Duvek, Corrim Duvek actually. This is Zora, we were just admiring your collection." He wanted to squeeze the life out of the man through his expensively manicured fingernails. Heath never really even looked at Corrim. He generally got a second glance simply for being so different.

The oily man slipped Corrim's grasp and took Zora's hand. "Ah"Mrs. Duvek, my complete pleasure to meet you." The knuckles found the man's lips and Corrim felt a strange urge to scour Zora's hand.

Zora's eyes went wide when Corrim revealed her name. They stayed wide until she blinked at Vikian's title of missus for her. His kiss on her hand snapped her out of it. She said smiled and said sweetly, "Oh, Mr. Vikian, it's simply "miss'." She was not going to throw herself at him as a giggling, easy, mess. His type preferred a bit more refinement, though not too much. He collected women like he collected his art and she knew it. She wasn't falling for his charm, though her demeanor towards him definitely demonstrated otherwise. She looked deeply into his eyes as he spoke to her.

Heath's smile widened as she revealed her status as single. He still held to her hand as though he had were at a store and she were his next purchase. "How are you finding my collection then?"

Heath was still watching Zora, but Corrim took this moment to interject.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-09-11 00:12 EST
"A little confusing to be honest."

Corrim's tone was honey laced bee stings. He insinuated himself between Zora and Heath, the arm once on Zora's back finding his side the other going about the shoulders of the man. He ignored the gathering crowd as he increased his volume loud enough to be heard by more than just Heath and Zora.

"Take these for instance, the lighting poor as it is can't hide the fact that the display is completely wrong. I mean Mister Vikian I can only hope that you are displaying in order of purchase because everyone knows that though Van Murin and Flores were both impressionists, Van Murin's use of color was about the harmony found in nature. Flores used it to explain the duality of mankind. To display them together is"frankly an insult to both masters." Corrim had gone straight backed and he was talking down at Heath visibly. The chuckles coming from his guests had Heath's face turning red.

Zora turned to Corrim and gave him a familiar glare. She tried to delicately pacify the situation. She turned back to Heath. "Oh, you'll have to excuse Mr. Duvek. He obviously just has a different view of art' being what he is?" She could not look at Corrim while insulting him so. By calling him by his last name, it distanced herself from him, instead of being personal and using his first name. By calling attention to how his race differed so greatly from the rest of them, she felt like as much as a fraud there, but at least she could hide her true race.

Corrim flinched like she hit him, the eyes found the back of her head for a moment before darting to the side his head following. His gaze fell to the floor, Heath's arm fell about Corrim's back and he turned to walk with him. "I do appreciate your assessment, Mr. Duvek. I will surely check into that tomorrow." Corrim knew the path Heath was leading him on, and the moment he was passed off to a security guard whose bicep was greater than his IQ Corrim knew he was leaving the party early, and alone.

Heath's voice went moved away from him as he rejoined his guests. Corrim looked over his shoulder at Zora. His eyes finding hers for a brief moment, pain quickly hardened over as the door closed on him.

Heath slipped an arm around Zora and spoke in low tones. "I'm sorry you had to witness that Zora, but I think you'll find the quality of company better now." Zora stood still, trying to understand everything that had happened. She continued to stare at Corrim, trying to hide her anguish when he looked back at her. Heath's words interrupted her longing. "Oh, yes. I'm so terribly sorry for that,? she said as she delicately wrapped her arm around Heath's.

Whispered Words

The man escorting him to the car was vulnerable, he carried himself as a man who had been injured once in the left leg. It was an old injury to be sure but Corrim knew he could bring the man down with a twist and a good blow from bone reinforced fist. So why did he let the man put him in the car and send him away. Zora was alone inside and he had intentionally allowed it to happen. He wanted badly to bust his way back in and carry her out of there. Even as the car was clearing the gate that was what he wanted. She could handle herself though and while he knew that, the thought of Heath touching her set his pulse to pounding in his brain. He could have beamed out of the limo, but it wouldn't make sense to so quickly.

The ride back to the city would give time for the party to wind down and the grounds to be a little more accessible.

Heath smiled at Zora like a man looking at a precious gem that is on his shopping list. "Nonsense, Zora. I'm just sorry you got saddled with someone so"beneath you." He snapped his fingers and a tray with drinks on it appeared on the hand of a server. "I'll be more than happy to make sure you have a ride back tomorrow, but for tonight my car and driver are a bit over worked. There's plenty of space here for you until then." He turned to look at her eyes sliding over the dress and the curves it held within before moving to her face.

She smiled as she accepted the drink from the server. She downed the drink rapidly. The shapeshifter pocketed the fluid into her mouth and diverted it into her body. She would simply spit it out after excusing herself to the bathroom later after enough time to make sense. She accepted his offer innocently, "That is very sweet of you. Thank you so much for your hospitality." She positioned herself closer to him, holding onto his arm tighter.

He smiled at her closeness. He whispered a few words to the closest of his security before turning back to Zora. "How about a private tour Zora?" He turned and nodded knowing that a quick end would come to the party now. They skirted a different corridor than the ones that she had taken with Corrim. There were rooms along this hallway, rooms that held empty beds. "It's been some time since I've had someone like you stay with me. I hope that you will find the place accommodating."

Whispered Words

Date: 2013-09-11 19:30 EST
Heath stopped every so often to expound the virtues of this painting or that. Clearly he was trying to impress Zora with his knowledge of the artists and their work. His hand kept sliding lower on her back though. As the drink disappeared his confidence seemed to grow. "This one my dear is called unexpected lover"one of my personal favorites. You see the way the artist uses the light to?"

Zora smiled as Heath droned on. She cringed and silently resented him when he called her "my dear'. That was one of Corrim's lines. She didn't hear a word he said after that. She remembered all of Corrim's stories on the ride over. She would interject an "Oh' or a "Fascinating' every once in awhile to feign interest in Heath's lectures. She soon turned her attention to getting the glass art piece. She would need to figure out some way to lose her new date for the evening if she wanted to steal his art. Considering he was showing no sign of letting up on his intimate attention for her, she debated how she would get away long enough to complete her objective.

The point of information is to know how to use it. Corrim understood the moment that the call came to the driver that he would be needed that Heath had found what he was looking for and was ending the party early. He got out on a corner next to a hotel, he never bothered to check which one. He beamed away to a point just outside of Heath's. He had sprung for a dampening field to be set up within his walls. Corrim looked at the wall for a moment before he determined that it might be time to show what he had been hiding. He took three steps and vaulted, fingers curling onto the top of the wall and scrambling over the top. He dropped silently and made his way across the front yard. The lights had gone as soon as the last party guest had cleared the gate. He was about to disable the security system when he heard the sound. A low growl, followed by a second had Corrim looking over his shoulder.

Two Doberman Pincers were coming at him quickly. He should have checked, he didn't know what was making him rush this. A brick through a window isn't pretty but it is effective. He slid his hand onto the knob and darted in through the door the sound of snapping jaws stifled at the last moment. The alarm however would prove another matter.

Shifting Eyes

Date: 2013-09-11 19:37 EST
Zora heard the alarm just as Heath did. He began to panic. Rushing off with his security guards every which way until they could determine where the break in was occurring. Zora did not know exactly who was trying to break in, but it was a diversion nonetheless. As they all left her alone, she quickly darted off to the room with the glass art piece. She simply walked up and absorbed the piece into her torso. She rushed back to the room where she was left and put on her best scared face.

Heath rushed into the parlor, Corrim having set the alarm to ringing had to quickly come up with a new plan. It was his turn to act the drunk. He leaned hard to the side and stumbled slightly. "You, bastard! I want to see Zora. You can't keep her from me. You know, she and I have somethin' good and then you come along and try to what? Take her from me" Was she good" Hunh' The thought of your hands all over her makes me sick." Corrim moved forward in a clumsy attempt to hit Heath.

Two large men grabbed hold of him, and looked at their boss. This was what Corrim had hoped for, a security crew that while intimidating was little more than a leaderless group of massive muscles. "Mr. Duvek have you lost your mind?" Heath's voice cut through the room and carried down the corridor. Corrim struggled against the men holding him.

As Zora was running back to her marker, she heard her name. Not only that, she heard Corrim say her name. His tone sounded different. Not as though he was calling for help, but something just out of place for him. She changed direction and headed towards his voice. She saw him being held up by the two men. She didn't speak, trying only to let herself be noticed by him until she could get a better sense of what was going on.

Corrim spotted her and struggled harder against his captors. "Zora! You were jus' gonna leave me"for this?" He broke away from them and closed with her in a path that was far from straight. He stumbled on past Heath and put his hand on her face along that cheek he had wanted so badly to touch. "You hurt me bad earlier baby, but"you're right. I deserved it. I saw how he was lookin' at you, and got jealous. It isn't you?baby I trust you. It's him I don't"Misster Vilkeran."

Zora hid her smile. She quickly understood and played along. "Oh, Corrim. You came back for me?"

Corrim stood unsteadily in front of her a goofy smile on his face. "Of course I camme back for nyou. I'm nuthin' with..out my Zora. You memmber how you found me. Everything I am is cuz of you." He laid his forhead on hers before letting go and turning towards Heath. "Now you go an leave me for"mister moneybags. I know you are too good for me"but I ain't losin you without a fight." He raised his fists up and swayed drunkenly.

Zora couldn't contain herself when Corrim placed his forehead on her's. She started laughing, which turned to a fun giggle that she emphasized. She said in a higher voice, acting like the tipsy girl herself, "Oh Corrim, yes, win my love and affection." She was trying to encourage both sides.

Heath looked from one to the other and shook his head. "My dear, I don't know what I ever saw in you." Not exactly true since she was still wearing that red dress that clung to her elegantly. He turned to the security guards and made a face. "Get em out of here"both of them." He looked at Zora with contempt. "You could have had it so good"now?" He shrugged as the pair of them were manhandled out the door and down the driveway.

Under any other circumstances, Zora would not let anyone close enough to touch her, but she happily allowed Heath's men to force her and Corrim out. As the men threw them out of the gate, she still kept up her cooing. She hugged on Corrim tightly and repeated, "Oh Corrim.." The men scoffed and walked away. She remained draped over Corrim and whispered in his ear, "I have the piece."

He gave her back that secret smile that she shared with him earlier in the evening. He kept an eye on the men at the gate who decided to watch them all the way down the fence line. Corrim slipped arms around her, lifting her up and spinning her. The muscle at the gate had started back towards the house. Corrim let Zora slide down him to her feet. He kept eyes locked on hers even as he signaled the beam out.

She tried not to laugh happily as he spun her, but she could not help but smile at the surprise. She barely even noticed rematerializing on his ship. She casually put a hand behind her back. She expelled the glass art from her back and grasped it, bringing her hand back around to the front of her to allow him to see it. She carefully placed it on the table next to them. She returned her gaze to him, still smiling.

He never even looked at the artwork. He was aware that it was set aside but he kept his attention on Zora. His hand went to her face once again when she turned back to him. He searched her face, her eyes trying hard to identify the color. His smile became an intense look that carried the confusion he was feeling. "Beautiful"just beautiful.? She gently rubbed her face against his hand. She blinked slowly at his statement, silently begging him to kiss her.

His fingers curled behind her head and slipped through her hair. The hand still at her back slid upward his palm pressing her close to him. Corrim moved before he could second guess or decide that it was too dangerous. He claimed her lips, his tongue darting into her mouth to dance with hers. He deepened that kiss with the hand at the back of her head as she began to kiss him back.

Chapter Five: The Art Collection

Zora was on the bridge. Corrim was foolish enough to trust her and give her access to the computer system. She had been in constant contact with her employer since then.

"Yes, I have all four. We are still completing analysis. It's been taking time." She left out what she had been doing to preoccupy that time. She left out most things in her reporting. She never trusted anyone.

Zora's race had taught her about humanoids and their destructive tendencies. Humanoids had continually struck out against her people for what they could do. Humanoids never trusted them, feared them, and slaughtered them. But her people went on the defensive in the same way the humanoids held against them, using their shapeshifting. Her race sent many out into space to seek out other races to learn their vulnerabilities so they could better protect themselves. Soon, their defensive nature turned offensive.

Her race began to infiltrate various governments and rebel radical groups, most of the time playing both sides. This was where Zora excelled. Her race sent her to work undercover for various agencies, building trust among individual nations only to turn that trust against them and cause war between nations, and even against themselves. Her goal was to let the humanoids fight and kill each other to save her own race from their blood stained hands.

That was all a lie.

Shifting Eyes

That was a simple backstory for those who demanded an intricate story. Corrim wasn't the only one who could sell tall tales. She met him on the planet she would call home. She started life as a small substance on a remote planet far from her race's home world, never even knowing them. She grew and began to develop qualities of her environment. At a young age, she learned she could shapeshift. Mimicking wild animals, she learned from their instinct to survive. When she ventured into populated areas of the planet, her unsuccessful efforts to mimic the people proved dangerous. She was continually cast out and grew to hate the humanoids.

She continued to watch them from the wild in order to perfect her abilities. She was finally able to infiltrate them successfully, in the hopes of earning her revenge against all humanoids. By working for the planet's government, she was able to do the most damage to its internal structure. Occasionally she would have to complete various tasks to keep her secret position of power. Along with those tasks was reporting.

That was also all a lie.

She only visited that planet briefly when she bumped into Corrim. She could tell many versions of her background. A few who had heard the stories would swear she herself did not even remember her true past anymore. In truth, her background meant little. What she was doing now was most important.

"No, I still have not heard word from the Andorian you sent, but I did hear that some pirates were trying to gain the pieces. They were very upset that some of their men were caught in the museum. I heard they were out for blood, trying to find anyone connected with the pieces. The Andorian may have run into them. I would suspect since he hasn't send word yet, that he may have met an unfortunate end?" She was certain he had.

"Yes, I will report again as soon as the analysis are completed."

Whispered Words

Corrim didn't know when she left, there was an ache in his chest as he could still detect the scent of her on the pillow next to his. He failed to keep his fingers from finding the dent that her head had made. Was she still on board" Did what happened push her away for some reason' He sat, bracing himself with his arms behind him. The blankets pulled around his waist left his torso bare. "Computer"locate Zora."

The computer told him that Zora was on the bridge and he couldn't help but offer a sigh of relief. For a brief moment he thought she had disappeared again, and this time taken what was left of his heart with her. He knew he needed to keep that hidden though. There was no room in his life, or hers most likely for"entanglements. He dressed slowly using his training to school his emotions and his expressions before heading to the bridge to find her.

Zora was seated at the main controls on the bridge. She was innocently viewing the latest results on the scans of the art pieces. Searching the pieces indicated no hidden message of how to find the priceless and powerful crystal they and so many others were seeking. Scans showed no secret element used in their design to disclose a rare mineral to pinpoint a planet. She even tried to connect the organic rough shapes in the hope that they might make some type of vague map, but to no avail. She was desperate to find out the location of the crystal that the pieces were supposed to reveal. Her focus on the art also helped her overlook other things that she wished to ignore.

He could be quiet when he chose. He didn't do so often because it was easier to fool the eye if it were looking at the completely wrong hand. He hadn't meant to sneak, he was just staying uncharacteristically quiet. Zora had come into view and he was watching her as she worked. He didn't know how long he stood watching, it could have been moments or days. He did finally come out of it and move forward with his usual exuberance. "Any luck my dear?" The disarming smile found his face and those too honest eyes.

She jumped forward slightly at his words. "My dear" was something he had always said. She flinched wondering if it meant more now. She would ignore it and continue her task. She kept analyzing the screen while replying, "Nothing so far. I've just been going through and running every type of scan that I see.? She spoke as though she had no idea what any of them were.

Whispered Words

Corrim looked at the list of scans she was using, he was far from an expert on scans, but he could see multispectrum scans happening as well as radiological. Physical integrity, and even Bio Spectral Analysis being done. "I would say you have covered quite a few things there. How long until you have them all completed?" He moved closer his hand going out and resting on the console very near to hers but still separated by space. He revealed nothing of how he wanted to place his hand over top of hers.

She replied, still sorting through results of completed scans, "Several will be completed in a few minutes. Others will take until the end of the hour." An alarm began to squawk across the ship, that female computer voice calling out a proximity alert. Corrim moved quickly to the helm controls and then looked at Zora. "We seem to have attracted some of the wrong attention my dear. An Orion ship is closing with us. No trackable numbers on the ship...that can only mean our pirate friends have found us." He sat and began to put the engines to good use. The Other ship hadn't expected them to go to warp. "I bought us a few minutes Zora...that is about all...we might be able to hide in a nebula."

Zora quickly readied herself, pulling up weapons controls from her console. Her first reaction was always fight, but on a ship, she was powerless. All she could really do was let Corrim take control and bide them more time for the scans. Once they knew where the crystal was hidden, they could quickly run there and retrieve it.

Corrim had chosen this ship for its maneuverability, it was small though and in the end that would mean slower at warp. He had his own scans going trying to find a place to hide. The view screen showed an asteroid field. It would be far more advantageous to the smaller ship. He turned to look at Zora as the option presented itself. "Uhm"I don't think you are going to like this." He could hear the three hundred sixty degree phaser array going off under Zora's command. He hoped she knew about the aft torpedo launcher. And noticed that the complement was not so large, ten shots and they would be without the devices. "You may want to secure yourself.? She followed his instruction, abandoning the controls for a moment to brace herself.

Shifting Eyes

The ship turned hard pushing them into their seats with the inertia. The dampeners held though and Corrim started to play cat and mouse around the large space rocks. He managed to get far enough ahead to shut down his engines and drift like a piece of one of those asteroids. The only problem was that he needed to keep the scans running and life support going. It was only a matter of time before the pirates located them by their energy signal. "I am not sure how much time we have, I'll keep an eye on the pirates, you check those scan's see if you can't get them to speed up. Charm the computer." He flashed her a smile even as he left off "the way you did me."

Zora quickly changed her focus, and her console screen, to the scans. She was trying everything she could to speed the system along, deleting duplicate scans in several programs and eliminating unnecessary scans that wouldn't be able to help them determine any specific identifiers.

Every removed operation sped up the system, lag disappearing like a rainbow in the desert. Corrim watched as the other ship moved closer, he was sure they were caught the moment it started to charge weapons. Corrim hit a few switches and sent the ship on another wild ride even as the computer were coming back with it's results. Zora watched the screen intently, focusing on one set of results after another as they poured in. Finally she jumped up and said, "They want them' They can have them!" She rushed off the bridge.

The female voice was beginning to annoy the Cardassian with all the bad news it kept giving. Cargo bay doors opening, unsecured freight lost. Corrim began to mutter and scanned the area only to find the four pieces drifting in space like miniature asteroids themselves.

In a few short moments, Zora ran back onto the bridge and yelled, "Let's go!" She jumped back into her seat and secured herself. Corrim wasted a moment to check on the Pirates. They were scanning the shards, that was all the opening he needed. He rocketed out of the field at full impulse and kicked it into warp the moment they cleared the asteroid field. "I certainly hope you have a very good reason for dumping off what we have put so much effort into acquiring in the first place."

Zora answered bitingly, "Yes. Let them have their priceless art. It wasn't worth our lives."

He could only hope that meant she had found what she was looking for in those scans. "Perhaps my dear, but don't forget that we have already made that risk several times along the way. I need a course heading...I would hate to drop out of warp into a star." She leaned back in her seat comfortably, now that they were out of danger. "I don't care where we go. I think I could use a vacation after all this mess. How about one of those fun party planets?"

Shifting Eyes

He gave her a strange look as his hand hovered over the controls. "You really must tell me what is going on inside that head of yours." Corrim brought the ship out of warp and looked at her once more. "Tell me you haven't become a raging lunatic, or perhaps the location is something you don't want me to have" If it is that important I can let you pilot the ship It's been a while since I have been able to rest through a trip."

She closed her eyes a moment and casually said, "I don't have a location."

Corrim began to turn the ship around and head back the way they had come. "its fine, we can get back the pieces if we play it right. I'll be an unscrupulous spice merchant and you can be my penny pinching bookkeeper." In his head he was already starting to go over dialogue that he would use, and inflection to pass suspicion off of them. With her eyes still closed, Zora replied, "There is no need. There is no location."

He never engaged the engines, just sat there staring at Zora as though she were supposed to say more. "I hope you have more to say than that' Do I get to be let in on the secret or am I a liability?" He was growing frustrated with the hoarding of information she was exhibiting.

She opened her eyes and turned to look at him. "Scans showed that the glass art had remnants of life. A further scan identified it to be an embryonic lifeform in its crystalline state. That was the powerful crystal everyone was searching for. They have been known to steal and store enormous amounts of energy. But the crystal no longer exists, not in that state. The crystal was destroyed in some blast, causing it to be broken into pieces and melt into odd shapes. The glass art pieces weren't sculpted by the artist. They were found that way."

Corrim listened to the explanation silently. He could have laughed over the irony of spending so much on something so worthless. Still there had be unexpected benefits. He nodded twice, and then a third time spaced between heartbeats before turning to the console. "Have you ever been to Montera VII" They have a summer festival that that is unrivaled in the Arucanis Arm." He didn't look her way as the ship adjusted coarse one last time. "There is of course the small matter of a coup that we will need to help to come about....but I would say in between there will be plenty of time to enjoy the festival."

Whispered Words

The ship sat in stationary orbit around Montera VII. Corrim's eyes opened though there was no alarm or reason for it. He slipped from the bed dressed in silk pajama bottoms.

"Computer" Locate Zora."

He started towards the closet to find the days outfit when that automated female voice came back to him.

"Zora is not on board".

Corrim froze mid-step. He looked back over his shoulder a peculiar shine to his eyes as well as a strange burn. Eyelids dropped closed and he nodded to himself silently. "Thank you computer.? He dressed slowly, as though hoping something would happen and trying to prolong the inevitable as long as possible. He stepped from his room calling for a course change.

She always wanted to make things difficult. Zora waited on the planet until the sun set. Then she made her way to her next assignment.
