Tabitha St Germain

Tabitha sat outside, curled up on the shore of the lake by Toby's cabin. The summer breeze tossed her raven waves all about as she bent over a little book, with a cover that gleamed like sapphires. On the front was an image of a grey wolf howling, the moon full and low in the night sky. Finally, she had a place to collect her thoughts - and her new pen stratched across the parchment pages..

It's been over two months now since I've been back here - back home. The changes - I still find myself wanting to wake up, like it all has to be a dream.. then I look at my hip, and I know it's real, wonderfully real.

I haven't ventured back to the city proper since Jewell's wedding - oh what an event that was. I remembered seeing her before the storm took me and Perrin away - but she was even more beautiful than my memory. The emotions - they almost were too much for me. So many people in one place - all the raw feelings, and Toby knew even before I did that I was struggling, so he shielded me, so all I felt was him - his feelings, and I was able to stay until the reception. He's a divine dancer, and we continued our dance well after we got home.

"Home" - that's a word I never thought I'd use again. But I know now, that RhyDin is home, that it always was home - and that it always will be home, no matter where our travels take us. Soon, I'll be taking the test to earn my credentials to fly into the far reaches of space - and I can't wait. A whole universe awaits us..

Over the years, the little diary had been filled with all the little things mothers keep - the first pairs of tiny booties, the silken curls after the first haircuts, baby footprints forever preserved in permanent ink.

ON this night, Tabitha carefully opened the diary to a fresh page, and with a glowing, knowing, smile, took pen to paper:

November 15th

Well, it's official - what I've known for the past week has been confirmed by a battery of doctors. We're having a baby - a miracle to go with the miracle of my even being to write this...

She paused, wiping a few tears from her eyes, before continuing her train of thought:

The only thing the doctors can't determine is when he'll - for he's definitely a he - will be arriving. By the dates, he should be born around Reinette's birthday - but he seems to be ahead of schedule, so to speak. Doctor T says not to worry, but she's having me come for checkups and tests every few weeks until he's born. We've already decided on a name - Keith Donald St. Germain. Toby loves the girls to utter pieces, but when I told him we were having a boy, something in his eyes - the way they shone..

Another dab at her eyes, then a resounding crash and the sound of feet pelting on the stairs jarred her back to reality. Stowing the diary back in the bedside table where it lived, Tabitha was up to intercept two girls who were already spinning tales of how the other upended the dining room table. And so it goes...

Even though sleep settled over the cottage like a soft blanket, Tabitha remained awake, savoring the quiet time that was so rare in her boisterous household. And though she would have it no other way, there were times when Tabitha needed that time to collect her thoughts, and on this night she did so, quietly writing in her well-worn journal by the faint light emitted by a tiny book light Toby bought for her years ago.

I am so glad Wyheree and Roran are staying with us, even though I swear she's not getting the rest Doctor T insisted she get, what with the girls constantly pestering their Auntie for stories, or in Selene's case, snowflakes, as she's still young enough to be delighted by the pretty flurries only Wyheree can create. Though she seems to be doing well, and Roran assures me this is so, as his nose would tell him otherwise, I cannot help but worry, as there are days she seems so tired and worn. Oddly enough, it is on those days Keith will only be calm and happy when his Auntie holds him, but since his presence does seem to lift her spirits and chase the fatigue from her eyes, I suppose it's all right. As long as she rests and doesn't exert herself with too much magic, Doctor T is confident she will progress just fine. And since she's longed for this blessing for ages, I will do whatever I can to help her and Roran, even if it seems strange that Keith brings her so much comfort and relief.

With a yawn and a stretch, Tabitha slipped her journal back into the little drawer of her nightstand. Snuggling in close to Toby, she was soon fast asleep, with sweet dreams dancing in her mind.
