Isaac Levitan, 1860?1900

Isaac Levitan was one of the greatest masters of Russian scenery painting. He was born in Kibartay (Lithaunia) on Aug 30, 1860, in a family of a railroad technician. At the age of 13 he entered Moscow School of Art, Sculpture and Architecture, where he was influenced greatly by V. Polenov's and A. Savrasov's artworks. His primary place of residence was Moscow, however many of his works stem from his life in Moscow and Tver provinces, in Crimea, on the shores of great Volga. While taking in the innovative influences of European impressionists, he has remained a deeply lyrical and emotional painter, filling the images of Russian nature with deep emotional tones.
His last painting - "Lakeside. Russia" - was left unfinished, as disease has taken the artist away from his work.
