The following exerts are part of my next book Unique Dragon Breeds of RhyDin, and Surrounding Worlds. It is still being compiled and shall, within the next year, be published by RhyDinian Codexi Publishers. The exerts are not in complete form and are here to entice the reader. No information on the where abouts of the dragons mentioned will be given out, this is to discourage would be Dragon Slayers from harming the dragons, or getting themselves killed.

The Orange Dragon,

Not long ago I was invited to stay with a rather reclusive Drake. I have heard of Orange Dragons before, but had never seen one, or any remains of one, and here I was suddenly being invited to stay and interview one. The Dragon, whom I shall call Sal, is in fact most spectacular. Though only a young adult, Sal has managed to take several thousand acres of land as his territory. Also noted is a small hamlet, which is not named for safety reasons, which pays Sal an annual due for protection. Now I know what you are thinking, but the Hamlet actually approached Sal first. It seems that raiders had been hammering the town for ages, and now the town has a Dragon Protector. Sals due is a mere five sheep, on an annual basis. When I asked Sal about the tribute and why it was so small, he stated,

"(Name of Hamlet) is small, and not very wealthy. Plus the raiders are not well organized at all, usually I just fly over them and they run away. If I actually have to fight, I get to keep any booty the raiders mighty have on their persons."

Physical description of the Orange Dragon;

Sal is a bright metallic orange color, light does reflect off his scales. The scale are laid very tight along the body in a uniformed patter making for a smooth surface on the bulk of the body. Eye color is Dark Blue, which makes the visage very striking to behold. The most unusual physical attribute of the orange dragon is the extra appendages. Most dragons have two forearm/legs, two hind legs, and a set of wings. Orange dragons have two forearm/legs, a second set of forearm/legs, a set of hind legs, and two sets of wings. The added arm/leg appendages make for a longer torso, and the second set of wings, located near the center of the back help the orange dragon to fly. Also the extra wings can be used as flaps and rudders, giving the orange dragon the a superb grace, speed, and agility in flight. I do not think any other flying creature can out fly one of these magnificent dragons. The orange dragon is also devoid of horns and spinal spikes, giving it better aerodynamics than any other dragon I have ever seen.

The breath weapon of the orange dragon is similar to that of the red dragon. Pure and simple it is heat, Alas, where the red dragon breathes fire, the orange dragon breathes a superheated dry heat. Sal demonstrated for me the power of his breath by breathing upon a tree that had been submerged in the bottom of a lake for many years. The tree literally burst apart and into flame as water flashed into steam in the trees structure. The concentrated beam of superhot gas destroyed the tree in seconds, and left rocks and sand glazed with glass where the tree had been laid. Thus the breath of a young adult orange dragon is just as effective as an adult red dragon. Needless to say, Sal makes short use of any raiders he encounters. Even from a height well out of arrow range, the orange dragon is deadly.

Armoring. As stated above the scales are laid in a tight pattern over the bulk of the body. Thus the orange dragon looks more as if it has skin, rather than scales. This does pose a small problem for the orange dragon. since the scales are not as thick as other dragons. An orange dragon has a decreased armored hide, making it venerable to smaller ballista or a very strong crossbow.

This concludes this exert from Unique Dragon Breeds of RhyDin, and Surrounding Worlds. I do hope you enjoyed the reading, for more information you will have to buy the up coming book.

Another Dragon, which I find to be most fascinating is the Rainbow Dragon. This dragon I observed from distance, as the subject was feral, and most hostile. The shear beauty of the Rainbow is beyond words. However, It begs to reason that the name Rainbow Dragon is really not the proper name of the dragon. The proper name of the Rainbow Dragon is Prisma Drakon or the Prism Dragon. Named since the scales of this creature actually bend light causing the rainbow colors which the dragon is famous for. The dragon tends to be twenty to thirty percent larger than the average red dragon, and like it's cousin the red dragon, is very aggressive.

The scales of the Prisma Drakon differ from those of other dragons in the the scales are crystalline, and refracts light as it passes through the scale. Scales of the Prisma Drakon are in demand on the open market. The discarded scales of the dragon, those which fall off due to molting, can be gathered and sold for a tidy sum. So valued are these scales that the dragon is protected in two kingdoms that I know.

The scales, of the average adult, tend to be six to nine inches in length and three to five inches across. The scale has an unusual thickness to it, as the top of the scale comes up to a ridge. This gives the scale a triangular 'spearhead' appearance. The scale is also as clear as fine crystal, this allows for light to pass through the scale. Due to the triangular shape of the outer surface area of the scale, as light passes through, it is bent, and is emitted as a prismatic shower of color.

Now as the scale is thicker than the normal dragon scale, it gives more protection to the dragon. Prisma Drakon tend to be some of the best armored dragons in existence on RhyDin. The Prisma Drakons scales protect it from many of the biggest weapons around. Too the magical resistance of the dragon is note worthy, as spells conjuring light, heat and cold as weapons have very little affect on the dragon.

Now to the breath weapon. Most scholars agree, the Prisma Drakon, lacks any known breath weapon. It has never been documented or reported, officially or unofficially. The dragons alternate form of attack is magical, in that even feral Prisma Drakon have the innate ability to cast a bolt of intense concentrated light. The light is cast out through the hand or finger of the dragon. Eye witnesses of this casting say that the light bolt can cut through solid metal like "a hot knife through butter". Other than this attack, the dragons claws, teeth, tail and wings provide the main weapons for combat.

This concludes this exert from Unique Dragon Breeds of RhyDin, and Surrounding Worlds.

For my final exert on this subject I feel it is only befitting that I should comment on a subject that is currently an open subject in the realm of Xeno-Draconian Medicine. The next dragon I shall cover is one of extreme controversy. Debates on the proper classification of this dragon rage on in intellectual circles, not only on RhyDin, but a few other worlds where dragon kind are found to inhabit. I speak here of the Sea Dragon, or what is commonly called a Kraken by sailors. I must admit, I have never observed, or seen a sea dragon. However, many sea going people have seen the creature, and nearly all describe a creature with strikingly similar attributes.

Most tell of a great serpent like creature, with flipper like forearms, no wings, and no hind legs. A dorsal fin runs from the head to the tail. The dorsal fin being described as a single row of dorsal spikes running down the back, with a member laced in between the spikes. The flippers are able to grasp, but lack actual fingers. The head of the creature is similar in shape to that of a horse, only much bigger, and the mouth is a gaping maul of sharp serrated teeth. The tail of the creature is similar to that of a whale, having a horizontal axis, rather than that of a vertical axis like a fish. The scales of the creature are dark green to black in color, and are said by many to have a slim that grows on them that makes the creature very slippery. It should also be noted that the sea dragon is often said to be larger than terrestrial dragons, in that it grows to be several hundreds of feet long.

Now, why all the controversy? For one thing, this dragon has no wings, and dwells in the sea. Also the creature is said to be cold blooded. I have met with a colleague, who in his youth, had the fortune of briefly examining the partial decayed corpse of a sea dragon. His belief is that the sea dragon is a dragon species that split from the proto-dragon( the fore race of dragons) species millennia ago, and have evolved into the sea creature we have today. One of his findings is that the fore flipper, of a sea dragon, is not the forearm, but rather the wing. Having used the wing as a means of propulsion in the water, it evolved into the modern sea dragon flipper. Also the creature has been reported to spit sea water, much like many other dragons have a breath weapon. My colleague said that he found a sac inside the creatures stomach which was filled with hundreds of gallons of sea water. The sac was also covered with a strong fibrous muscle, which could have squeezed the sac allowing for a blast of water to be spewed forth from the mouth of the creature.

So the question remains, since there is enough information to show that the Sea Dragon, and terrestrial dragons have common ancestry, does that place the Sea Dragon in the same modern family as dragons?
