Inspired by "A Friend To Me" by Garth Brooks.

Rico sat at the end of the bar drinking his scotch and just staring off into space. The jukebox was playing random songs the men had chosen. In between the clinking of glasses, laughter and talk, he caught the sound of Aja’s laughter as she spoke with Trevor, who was blushing madly. It probably meant that Aja was giving her son a hard time about the girls that were openly staring at him.

The strains of a piano caught his attention as he watched the mother and son together.

"Well you and I we're buddies, and we've been since we first met..."

That part didn’t quite fit, given how they started. But within that first trip, she quickly became someone he respected.

"Me and you Well we've sure been through, our share of laughter and regret."  Rico smiled as he tilted his head thinking over the years they had ran together. They celebrated together when times were good and held each other together when they weren"t.

"Lord knows we've had our bad days, and more than once we've disagreed. But you've always been a friend to me."  No matter how or why they disagreed, at the end of the day, he always knew she had his back, just as he would always have hers.

"You can be so stubborn, there's times I think you just like to fight."  that part made him chuckle a little. There were times that he and Aja would argue just for kicks. He lifted his scotch for another drink as the next line was sung.  "And I hope and pray I live to see a day when you say I might be right." Rico smirked into his scotch. 'That day may never happen' he thought with an amused smile. Aja certainly didn't admit too often when she was wrong.

"And there's times I'd rather kill you Than listen to your honesty. But you've always been a friend to me."  He had to admit that she never sugar coated a thing for him. She always gave him the unvarnished truth, whether or not he wanted to hear it.

"You've always been time and again. The one to take my hand And show to me it's okay to be just the way I am With no apology." Tanner had taught her well, she could turn a phrase when she wanted to, and over the years, she had shown him that being himself was the only thing he ever needed to be.

Aja caught him watching her and Trevor and gave him a warm smile. One that he"d come to know so well over the years. She was starting her way over to him as the last line rang through his ears and faded away.

"Oh you've always been And you will 'til God knows when Yes you've always been a friend to me..."
