It was a normal day. Whatever normal meant for the Arcadia Ship Yards. Ships were coming in, being unloaded, re-supplied then being sent back out. Construction of the new ships moved along at a solid pace. Aja was making the rounds and lending a hand here and there when she saw the need.

She helped the boys, when she saw her crew member that was injured two days prior coming out of Parker's office. She decided to go see if Parker gave him a clean bill of health or not. So she finished up helping the boys, then she went into Parker's office who barely looked up when she came in, instead, he opened another book near him saying calmly.

"I want to summon a demon." Parker kept reading his book, Aja shut the door looking at Parker curious.

"And I want a pony." Aja retorted with a grin then saw that Parker didn't seem to be kidding. She tilted her head and asked more carefully. "What do ya wanna go and do something like that fer?"

"Demon's can supply power to a person or group given the right sacrifices and rights." Parker stated very calmly. "This particular one, I believe is supplying the Quistguards with their some of their powers."

"Really' And summoning it does what?" Aja perched on a stool near his work bench. Just like she had done many times before.

"Well, it would make it visible. Corporeal." Parker then looked up at Aja. "So you could kill it. Thus ending the connection to the clan upon its death."

"Oh." Aja thought about it for a moment. "Well. Just kill the demon. That's cake. Problem solved." Aja quipped and leaned against the table. "Parker, I have skills, don't get me wrong. I can do a couple hard core shows if need be.." she looked squarely at Parker. "But we're talking a demon, Parker. A demon. I'm assuming this means it's huge and pretty bad arse."

"Aja." Parker said calmly. "I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't believe that you were capable of doing it." He spoke in a warm tone that relayed his confidence in her. "It would be a huge loss to the clan."

"Really?" That got her attention. Anything that would give her an edge in taking down the Quistguards would always have her full attention. Aja pondered his idea now more seriously. "How huge?" she asked curiously as she got up and started to pace around Parker's work room.

"I'd wager about fifty percent of their power comes from this demon." Parker supplied calmly.

"That much?" she nodded while thinking about what he said. "That's a big loss." she nodded a little continuing to thinking it over carefully. "But," she looked at Parker then seriously. "You get me details on yer big hairy demon there and I'll calculate the risk." she put a hand on her hip. "I'm not saying yes to this yet, Parker. I'm jist saying I'll look at it."

"It's all I'll ask you to do, Aja." he said solemnly. "I know what it means to you to consider taking on this battle. Who they are, what they represent."

"Uh...yeah." she said a little uneasy for a second. "But. You know what kind of wrath I have when it comes to them."

"Sometimes, you hold it in so well that I forget how far you will go to take them out."

"Parker. I was careful. For years. I had to be fer you, fer Rico...fer the kids." She paced around a bit then looked at Parker. "You and I know too well what they will do when they feel threatened."

"I do." Parker set the book down. "Aja. All I ask is that you consider it."

"Oh. I am, Parker. Believe me, I am." she smiled at him and then went out the door.

~WEEKS LATER~

It was a lazy Saturday night for Aja. Well, as lazy as her weekends got. Less incoming ships on the weekends but still a fair amount. She picked up one of the late incoming deliveries and swung by the arena. She set the anti-theft on her truck with a smirk. She pitied anyone who attempted to hijack her truck or cargo. They’d end up wishing they had just stayed in bed that day if they attempted it.

She wandered the outdoor Arena entrance, just looking for a beer and a chair to settle into for a while without everyone asking her a bunch of questions. She knew it came with being the boss, and she really was ok with that, but some days, lords have mercy, she really did just want to not be the Captain.

Her present mood was being soured from an encounter earlier in the day with the captain of an incoming vessel. And this guy was a piece of work. He honestly believed instead of bunking down at the local inn that he should rate a room in the Ship Yard owner’s home. Aja wasn’t going to allow anyone she didn’t know or trust anywhere near her house much less inside.

And as if on cue, her video chat rang, Aja sighed and tugged the tablet out while lazily walking towards the outdoor Arena entrance. Hitting the answer button, she saw Rico on her screen.

“Hey, Ricks. Problems"”

“Same one. Captain Marcus is still making his demands.” Rico replied and Aja sighed as she hip checked the door that would lead her down the Arena steps.

“Ricks, ya can tell that arrogant bag o wind dat he can stay on his own damn ship then.” she wanted to be colorful, but now she was around people that rarely heard her in “Boss” mode so she bit back the urge.

"I did tell him. He seemed to think it was rude not to be invited to stay in the ship yard owner's house." Rico answered her making her huff.

“Like I want dat good fer nuffin bag of bones anywhere near mah kid! Fat freakin chance of dat happenin.” Aja replied making a face at her First mate through the video chat. She saw the slightest a smirk on Rico’s face.

"I ordered a couple of guards to your house. Make sure he doesn't try to fool Maria into thinking you did issue an invite. Even though I'm sure she knows better." Rico told her and Aja nodded with a smile.

“Bless ya fer dat.”

Aja waved to Candy who was calling matches that night, then came to a halt seeing her sister in the ring.
“Uh, Ricks" Did we know JiJi was back from Ballentine"”

"No. Is she?" he asked his eyebrow arching some. Aja watched her sister for a moment.

“Yeah, 'less I'm seeing things.” Aja headed to the bar, grabbing a beer before heading to the usual table in the Arena. “Well, I'll see ya back at da yards. Let me know if dat jackass captain gives ya anymore trouble.”

"I will."  he gave his oath and Aja nodded then shut off the video chat.

She took a seat, kicking her feet up onto an empty chair, taking a drink of her beer while watching her sister. Aja didn"t know her sister had returned to Arcadia, much less by passed Arcadia to come straight to the Arena. Her sister sometimes did things that made very little sense to her.

While she pondered this, her friend Rachael came in for her usual night of dueling and relaxing from her week with the Watch’s Special Victims Unit. Aja didn"t think too much about what Rachael had to deal with all week. It would only piss her off and she had bigger fish to fry elsewhere.

As the night went on, Shadow came in. Aja found the elf to be interesting. She also thought that a lot of people tended to skirt around him carefully. Aja on the other hand, had no such predilection. He was now talking to her about Taco Tuesdays.

"I've been bereft of tacos for some time." he said and Aja smiled while nodding at him.

"Aye, Shadow. I have noticed yer absence." one of the serving lads brought her a drink then. It had a tiny umbrella in it, not that Aja minded at all.

"It's difficult to get back into the city when one lives in a tent in the wilderness." he gave Aja a wink then.

"I thought ya be all magic like and able to do that snappy finger thing and poof! Wind up where ya want"  Aja asked with a cheeky grin, she knew of certain creatures that could do that, she wasn't sure if Shadow was one of them.

"Oui, Shadow does not know of certain events, Madame Aja." Rachael had just said when Shadow then said something that now had Aja"s brain in a curious mode.

"When a Mage uses his power to achieve a certain effect, the laws of nature require it be drained from some other source. I could wish a fountain to appear before me, and cause a drought in some place across this globe. So, yes, I  could do as you say. And cause irreparable harm elsewhere. I do not lightly use magic."

"Huh."  Aja said simply thinking of all those other mages and magic users she knew of. But Shadow"s answer made sense to her in light of something she had heard Parker mumbling about in connection to the demon.

"Forgive my verbosity." Shadow gave her a slight smile. The answer from Shadow brought a thoughtful expression to Rachael"s scarred features too. But likely for a different reason than Aja"s, who then leaned in a little towards Shadow, not to close so not to make him nervous.

"Ya know a lot of dis magic stuff?" Aja asked lightly but seriously enough.

"Yes, I know magical theory fairly well. Why?" Shadow asked the obvious question to her query. She took a moment to phrase the question she needed information without giving away too much away on why she was asking.

"Ya ever hear tale of use of demons to bolster power" Of either an individual or group?"

"Blood magic, dark magic, is real, yes. Any magic is more powerful in a ritual setting, used by a group of those like-minded."  Shadow relayed making Aja think that it fit the Quistguards to a tee. She gave a nod seeming to focus on something in her head before looking to Shadow with another question.

"And if used....what would it take to severe such a tie?"

"Are you telling me that you know of a demon summoned to this plane, Aja?"  Shadow seemed very interested now. Not that Aja could blame him. But she was not about to go into the story about the Clan now.

"Suspicions of such deals made, yes." She sat back with her drink, all too aware of how many people were in earshot now.

"Well, often, there is a physical focus which keeps such beings...tied here." Shadow replied, then continued. "A gem or other artifact. If that can be located and destroyed, the demonic presence is banished."

"So I would not have to kill da demon ta break da tie?" Aja couldn't help but ask.

"No. Find its focus." Shadow advised as he gave a glance to the other people joining the table now.

"Huh....dat would be easier than takin on demons." It was more of an idle statement, a thoughtful nod was given to Shadow then, probably accompanied with a similar look as she lingered a moment longer on the topic of discussion. A warm smile to Shadow soon followed as she realized how many were now in earshot of the conversation, questions like Aja"s were bound to bring up unwanted questions from others.

"Yes, it would. And if you must contest with a demon, use cold-forged iron weaponry."

"Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me."  Aja was saying just as Ajia had finished with her duel and decided to make her presence known to her twin with a rubber band shot from the ring she had just been dueling in. She looked towards JiJi as she is pinged with the rubber band. Her focus on the previous conversation completely diverted in order to address Ajia. "JiJi....ya best hope ya can run in dem spiffy new boots of yers!"

Shadow stroked his chin thoughtfully, and by effort of will, refrained from further query. He had suspected the sisters were about to launch into one of their displays of rivalry and antics.

Pt 3~ Interesting Phone Calls.
—————————————————————————  ———————————

Padriq walked into the office, Amy was on the phone making an appointment to meet with Aja about a ship design.

“Yes, Thursday at one is available. Shall I pencil you in"” Amy asked in that dulcet tone of hers. Padriq just laughed at the thought of Aja actually keeping a schedule. As much as he loved her, he knew that she sometimes would miss appointments simply because she would get too wrapped up in something else or simply allow herself to be led off in another direction.

He wandered up the stairs, passing Tristan’s office who seemed to him to be on the phone with Teddy, the lawyer. A strange little fellow he had heard much about but had only seen once. He wondered if the lawyer simply found it safer to stay out of range of Aja in case what he had to say made her angry. Not that he blamed the man for that, Aja angry was an intimidating event for those who didn’t know her. And even, for those that did on occasion. When she wanted to be, she could be quite fierce.

“Are they looking to back out of this contract"’ he was asking as he read over some papers. “I see. This deal was inked about a year ago. I’ll ask her if what she wants to do about them.”

He continued on past Rico’s door, pausing slightly to see what the First Mate was up today. More for his own benefit as later on, if it annoyed Aja, he’d be hearing about it.

“Small steps. I can’t go changing the whole system just as the boss has finally gotten used to sections of it.” he sighed a little. “She’ll kill us both for sure.” Rico listened for a moment before his head shook slightly. “No. You don’t understand. She isn’t technically savvy. She’s getting there in small baby steps but a major change like this would frustrate her.”

He shook his head a little. Changing the way the tech in office ran, often irritated Aja for a couple days as she adjusted to the new operational procedure. She would never say no to Rico and his ideas, though. Padriq had once asked her why Rico was given such a long leash with these things. She had smiled and said that she would give Rico anything he asked for simply because he had never once let her down in the past couple decades. Aja thought that letting him decide things for the office was one of the very least things she could do. Plus, it gave them something to play argue over. She found that a very amusing way to pass some time.

Upon reaching Aja’s office, a different sort of phone call was going on.

“Aja. Are you sure"” The voice was asking in a disbelieving tone.

“Parker is.” she responded not looking towards the phone. “That’s good enough for me to believe him. He honestly thinks it can be done.” there was a noise of agreement on the other end of the call before they asked.

“And what of the spells used on people that this particular demon is powering"”

“That, you’ll have ta ask Parker on. I do not know which sort are powered by it.” Aja said and mulled it over some more. “Although, that’s an excellent question.”

“I doubt they are protective.” the person said. “That would be a different class of demon altogether.”

“If they were, I’d have ta rethink this whole adventure.” Aja said and paused in whatever she was doing. “Not that they would protect anyone but themselves.”

“True. They aren’t exactly benevolent in their motives.” the person said.

“No.”  Aja agreed then sighed. “I know I’ll be around a lot longer than them, I could just walk away from it all.” she paused for a moment. “Just wait till they die out.”

“You haven’t yet.” the person reminded them. “Even though you say that every time you’re thinking about taking a piece of them out.”

“Yeah.” she replied thoughtfully. “I know.”

“You seem to have new motivation, my friend.” her friend said smoothly. “Other than my information that they will be gathered together soon.”

“I have acquired other information about the how to use what you have given me.” Aja said at first. “It’s good and gives me a new motivation.” then she paused. “Then there’s my sister.” Aja said simply. “Ajia. She doesn’t know them and is currently in Ballentine with my brother becoming quite the public figure.” Aja made a face thinking that her siblings were also propelling her slightly forward into the same sort of spotlight. She shook the thought and got back to what she was saying. “She’s also prone ta hopping a vessel and trying ta rid da high seas of slaver pirates.” Aja rubbed at her head. “Not that I don’t applaud da idea, but....”

“She doesn’t fully comprehend what they are or what sort of danger they present"”

“No.” Aja leaned on her arm, seemingly spacing out the window. “She looks like me but she isn’t protected like I am.”

“It could be arranged.”

“I know. I’ve considered it more than once.” Aja said lightly. “I also considered introducing her ta more of the players. But I’m not sure how many of them I want knowin she’s here either.”  Aja paused then thinking about that.

“Our more tenuous allies might seize upon the opportunity she would present.”

“Precisely.” Aja said. “Some of them, not so much with the trust worthy thing. She’d present too shiny a bauble ta resist tryin ta take.” Aja seemed to smile a little. “And she won’t make the same sort of threats I would. They’d exploit that.”

“Why wouldn’t she"”

“Fer one, there’s a whole bunch of it she isn’t aware of.” Aja rubbed her head again.

“Define a whole bunch.”

“Almost all of it.” Aja sighed a little.

“Then I do not blame you for keeping your secrets.” the person responded. “You’ve amassed a good network of allies over the years, who would walk into fire if you asked. Surely you could ask one of them for a favor in looking after her"”

“I’ll consider that.” Aja thoughtfully replied. “Some of those favors already have plans.”

“For the final take down"”

“Yes.” Aja replied simply. “Could be years coming.”

“But, no need to burn favors if you don’t have to.” the person said. “I understand.”

“I know that you do.” Aja messed with some papers on the desk.

“Where is your sister now"”  the man on the phone asked, obviously forgetting what Aja had already said.

“With Ajay. Far, far away from this potential disaster.”

“Safer to do when she is gone from Arcadia"”

“Yeah. I won’t have ta answer twenty questions or toss her arse in da brig ta keep her from tryin ta follow.” Aja half smiled about that. She knew JiJi would go all spazz tastic and try to tag along.

“Would she do that"” the person asked sounding amused.

“Hellz ya she would.” Aja sighed. “She’s got the same stubborn streak me and Ajay got. And it’s a damn pain in da arse sometimes. Then ya factor in Rikki likely goin with me..and she’d become impossible.”

“Sounds like karma and someone else I know.” he laughed, Aja shot the phone a look.

“Stuff it, would ya"”  she half smirked then got back to the conversation at hand. “I spoke with another mage the other night. He mentioned dat deals like this often included gems or objects.” she paused slightly while rethinking her conversation with Shadow in the Arena. “Something about blood or dark magic being involved. Which I related ta Parker.”

“And he said"”  the other person, who had yet to be identified, asked.

“I asked what it would take ta sever such a tie.” Aja leaned back in her chair as she related the info. “He said if we could locate the gem or artifact, and destroy them....the link would be severed.”

“Ya ran this past Parker"”

“I did. He seemed to get a Doh expression and then started muttering in that tone he gets, shooed me outta his office.”

“So, he’s got an idea now"

“He seemed ta.” Aja said. “When he stops spinnin over there, I’ll send you over whatever he comes up with.”

“Looking forward to it.”  the person said. “But you and I both know where those gems currently reside.”

“We do.” Aja said solemnly. “And we’ll deal with that. Talk to you soon.” Aja hung up the phone by jamming the eraser end of the pencil in her hand on  the speakerphone button and stared out the window for a moment before getting back to work. She paused in writing an order form. “Ya gonna stand out in the hall all day or ya comin in"” she said without looking up towards the door. She didn’t have to look to know who had been standing there.

“Sounded impor'ant, Luv.”

“It was.” Aja replied to Padriq then looked up at him. Her hair no longer hiding her face from view. She gave him a serious look. “And no. We’re not mentioning any of whatever it was ya heard to JiJi.” Padriq held up his hands.

“I don’t know a bleedin’ thin' about what I jus’ heard anyway.”

“With good reason.” Aja said looking unapologetic. Padriq knew that look, it had to do with her past, the one she didn’t tell even him about and one of the only things he knew of that would put that sort of hatred in her eyes. “I have my plans.”

“Aye, I understand.”

“Ok.” The look faded from her eyes then and the usual happy go lucky part of her demeanor returned. “And what sort of shenanigans are ya up ta today?” the conversation then veered off to the business of running Arcadia with Padriq allowing her time to sort out whatever she had going on in her head.

There were times, Aja was grateful for being well off. Now was one of those. Hiring people to set up the private beach for Rachael’s bachelorette party was far less stressful than doing it herself.
Also time saving, she had things to do, but didn’t want Rachael to have anything less than classy for her party. So hiring people seemed the ideal solution.

It was Thursday. She had met with Shadow the day before for coffee. She needed information fast and the man seemed to have it. She wouldn’t be turning it down.

Information on ways to take down the clan came to her in pieces and often from the strangest of places. Aja had learned not to look gift horses in the mouth. Information that useful to her came along so rarely.  She thought of all the times before, a small piece here or there. That she usually looked into under the guise of a business trip to another port. While she never flat out lied to anyone about what she had been doing, she wasn’t entirely forthcoming about what else she did on these trips.

This time would be different. This time, it wasn’t a little mission. It was a large chunk of the Clan’s power she’d be taking out. One that would certainly kick up a hornet’s nest of trouble that could very possibly follow her back to Arcadian shores. She had to be ready for that. Other people would have to be ready for that. And she had precious little time to prepare and execute this plan.

A recent phone conversation with a reliable informant had told her that if she was going to try this, she better do it soon. The Clan leaders rarely stayed in one place for very long, and for the first time ever, they would all be near one particular port town and the Clan leader’s home base.

While she busied herself with work at the yards, she thought over the Shadow meeting. Sorting out the information she was given in order to tell Parker what she had learned.

Aja had taken a spot at a table near Teas n Tomes. She ordered a coffee and waited for Shadow. Not that Aja needed anymore caffeine in her system, she was already running on three lattes for for the day and she was likely going to order another before left. She had much to do before Friday and she was running out of time.
When he appeared, she gave him a warm smile.

“Thank you for coming, Shadow.” she stood then, her manners being polished for the ball on Sunday.

“Of course, Aja. It sounded important.”

“It is to me.”  she motioned for him to sit down and motioned for the waitress. “Coffee or tea"”

“Some peppermint tea would be lovely.”  Shadow replied, the waitress took the order and went off.

“I had some further questions about the gems being used as objects to tether a demon to this plane.”

“Oh"”

“Once the deal is struck, could a gem that was imbued with the powers, be chipped or split into smaller pieces without losing the deal"” her question seemed to make Shadow think about that for a minute or two.

“Yes. I believe it could be accomplished.” he said finally. “These pieces don’t often come in contact with each other do they"’

“No.” Aja shook her head. “They have been given to others. That run their lands away from each other.”

“If these gems were to come into contact, the resulting explosion would likely kill anyone nearby.” Shadow cautioned. “Lead lined boxes could provide safety in their storage.”

“I’m not looking to keep them, Shadow. I’m looking to destroy them.” Aja said seriously. “Any hints on that"”

“Holy fire.” Shadow replied simply. “Most useful in destroying objects of evil.”

“Holy fire.” Aja mused and took a sip of her coffee. She’d seen it in action before. It was one hell of a sight.  “I’ve seen it. So lead lined boxes and Holy Fire. Don’t cross the gems.” she made a small joke based on one of those movies she’d seen. The reference might have confused Shadow, he seemed quiet.

“You do not wish this power for yourself"” he finally said and Aja shook her head.

“Nope. Don’t have a need or want fer it. Jist wanna take it away from da folks who have it and make sure they can’t hurt anyone else with it.”

“An honorable goal.” he said making Aja smirk a little.

“Not sure it’s completely honorable. A little has to do with vengeance.”

“Some vengeance is required.” Shadow said and Aja nodded.

“Keeps you focused. Motivated.” She said with a smile. “Well. Thank you so much for meeting with me today, Shadow. It is most appreciated.”

“Aja? One day I should like to hear how this little mission of yours ended up.”  he said as she stood up to leave. Aja stopped and looked at him thoughtfully.

“Oh, one day I shall tell the story.” Aja smiled softly. “Once I am sure the threat of them is gone from this realm completely.” she gave him a snappy salute. “I have much to do to prepare. Travel safely, my friend. I shall see ya soon.” She gave him a cheeky grin and then spun to head off down the alleyway back to the main street disappearing into the crowds.
