Ebon Ilnaren

Ebon hadn't been to the Annual Koi Show in....well, to be honest, he wasn't sure if he'd ever attended. Still, it was a perfect day to be out and about, and since they already set up the pond on the manor grounds, it was time to stock it. He imagined it would also give both Azure and Phen some extra inspiration for their respective crafts. Indeed, his elder daughter was already doodling some fish in her little embroidered notebook, taking note of colors and patterns.

"What do you think of those two there, Azure?" He indicated a pair of koi that swam together, not far away from where they stood. "I like the mottling of the larger one, the mix of black and orange....or is it red?"

Azure looked closer, then turned her gaze up to him. "Red, Papa! Oh, and that one's pretty too!"

So that made at least three to bid upon, though by the time the auction was over, the Ilnarens had a full seven koi coming home with them, ranging in size from 18" to 24". "The pond could probably hold twice as many comfortably, but let's start small."

Nile hadn't ever been to the Koi Auction before, but having seen one of the flyers about town, she'd made a point to go.

It didn't hurt that she'd gotten permission to actually build a pond in the family garden, but she wasn't entirely sure it was ready for any fish yet. Still, she went about pelting people who looked like they knew about fish with questions, and got a good look at the fish put up for auction. Not to mention she nosed about in the Ideas Cottage, too.

Eventually, it turned out that there was at least a pair with such pretty colors (or lack thereof, because one of them was black and white) that Nile had to take them home. She was fairly sure that one of her uncles could help make the fish comfortable until the pond was ready...

Now to come up with fish names!

She's probably going to need a bigger koi pond if she keeps coming yearly.

Niamh hadn't the faintest idea what good she would be at an auction. Wasn't the purpose at an auction to make your presence known and to call out' Particularly strenuous for the mute who loved her invisibility, it wasn't until she heard where the proceeds were going to that she considered it.

She found the sweet and bitter irony that if she bought a fish, the money would go to the Fire Brigade. The incidental Firestarter couldn't help the twitch at her mouth that refused to go further, but it tickled her fancy for dark humor.

But what really sold her? Was finding this beauty among the others, and it was love at first sight.

It was safe to say, her inability to speak didn't stop her from placing bid after bid to ensure she took it home.

She left with a new friend to stare at for hours on end.

Due to the color scheme, she already knew she was going to name it Hal.

Saturday morning, 9 am:

Wanting another koi or two for their pond, Shy arrives at the auction with several children in tow. The youngsters are excited at the prospect of helping their mother choose the fish she will bid on.

Having taken a good look at the variety of koi (3 times), and after much deliberation on the children's part, the final consensus is that a white koi with a red spot on its head, and a black and white koi (both 12") are the two that will find a new place to live.

Naturally, there is a great debate on who will get to carry the fish back to the log home. "You kan *each* have a turn," Shy quietly states, ending the lively discussion.

One year later, and convincing Patrick that the inn was desperately in need of a koi pond had not worked out very well. Minoko would bring the topic up once every few weeks, usually causing some form of brief spat. Finally Patrick had managed to convince her it was a bad idea with one simple sentence. "Drunks will piss in it, you know." That was all it had taken to ruin her picture perfect mental image of a nice, tranquil spot that inn-goers could visit. Now all she could see was a group of careless men harassing her poor, poor fish. These concerns were (drunkenly) voiced to her husband, who, much to her joyful surprise, said that they could simply install a koi pond at their home. So to the koi auction they went. Minoko ended up winning three: two for herself and one for her friend Orchid.
