Public notice:
During the week of 18 Sept, Mairead Harker will be holding a series of afternoon meet and greet events at Rhydin's Observatory Complex in Dragon's Gate. Channel KIDS News will be on hand to cover them. Citizens of all ages and all walks of life are welcome to attend. There will be desserts from Divine Delights Bakery and free luncheon in the cafe during the Meet & Greet hours from 12-4pm.
————————————————————————— ————— Maggie was on the dais in the second floor conference room with a glass of juice and bowl of cheese and pretzels. The questions began.
"Miss Harker," came the question from a sharply dressed man in the rear of the group, "you're ten years old, what makes you qualified to run for Governor of Rhydin?"
"With due respect, Misterrrrr," she squinted slightly to read his name tag, "Casper, what makes anyone, regardless of their age, truly qualified to run for public office?" She cleared her throat. "I believe that I have been a positive influence on some of Rhydin's youth and would like to show them that their contributions do matter. It doesn't make a difference if they collect money, food, clothes, or other things to give to people in need or do something like serve up food in a shelter. It matters, it makes a diffference."
Martin Casper held up his voice recorder. "What do you hope to accomplish if you win?"
"I have a long list of things I would like to do or see done, but I've had to trim it down and think in practical terms instead of ideal ones. I would like at least one additional fire brigade, EMS, and shelter built in every district, but Old Market and Old Temple. Old Market is pretty well covered with several emergency units. Old Temple has the fire and EMS units, but I would like a shelter to be built over there, too. Urgent care centers and shelters like the one in Old Market would be a great thing to have in every district, but it's a question of how much money could be raised to support these projects. Rhydin has many generous citizens that are willing to help with funding and building materials. I'd like to see people making use of the Rhydin Public Library more often. If there isn't an RTS stop there already, I'm sure that Mr. Kirost, could arrange it."
"Maggie?" came a voice from the front seats. "You mentioned education being a concern of yours. How would you handle that in terms of getting children into schools?"
"I'd like to work with the educators in the city and ask their thoughts on it. I do know that learning has to be made interesting for kids or they get bored. We have a few public schools, but most are institutions run by private groups like Bristle Crios. Privately run schools often specialize. I believe every child deserves at least the basic knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics. Adults who haven't had the opportunity to learn those things should also be able to without being criticized or bullied. I'd like to see apprenticeship programs for people that want to be blacksmiths, carpenters, and other jobs where they develop their skills while working. Some people think they can be a master of their craft overnight, that's just not true."
The room was buzzing with chatter. Maggie took a moment to enjoy her juice.
