A letter was drafted up, and sent to the Oracle to be published. This letter is in response to the "Open Query to Candidates" that was published in the most recent edition of the Oracle.
"Dear Miss Sarai,
Firstly, I would like to thank you for your recent query published in this month's edition of the Oracle. I understand that your questions and concerns are very important to you, and I want you to know that I hold them in the same regard. The issues of the people are, of course, my issues as well. As I run for the position of Governor, I take such matters quite seriously. As I intend to work with and for the people, the agenda of the spoken majority is always a primary concern, although I will always hold the issues of the minority in the same high esteem. Part of being a representative of the people is being open to a dialogue about all issues, from those affecting each and every one of us, to those affecting a select few.
After all, in a city like Rhy'Din, understanding that each being is a unique individual with their own concerns is quite possibly the greatest bit of wisdom one can hold.
1. What do you feel is the most important issue we are facing right now and how do you intend to deal with it"
The most important issue is the current crime level in the city. This is not only a personal concern, but also the concern of many citizens that I have spoken with during and even before the campaign process. To counter this issue, I plan on increasing the amount of city-guardsmen on patrol and making those patrols much more frequent. I am also looking to increase the level of community involvement in the security of the city. There are a myriad of individuals in Rhy"Din with exemplary gifts, whether it be magic, extraordinary powers, or other unique skills and abilities that can compliment the already stalwart efforts of the Watch. I wish to continue my efforts to reach out to these people, and offer them the opportunity to step up and help make their city a better place.
2. How do you intend to deal with the most recent wave crimes in RhyDin, both those committed by the slavers/crime lords and those committed against them"
I believe my response to your first question would mostly answer this question as well. I am fully behind a diplomatic resolution in situations such as these, and I support our judicial system to grant fair trials to those that commit criminal acts.
Of course, in an emergency situation, I fully support the Watch's responsibility to react to the immediate threat, which often times means subduing any suspected criminals and troublemakers in order to bring them to justice. The level of force should obviously always be directly proportional to the nature of the threat, and any kind of physical violence would be considered a last resort, but one that should not be discounted entirely.
3. What are the most important characteristics you feel are needed in our next Governor and how do you feel you embody them"
Our next Governor must be compassionate, and must be willing to work for the people. The position of Governor is that of an elected official, elected by the people and for the people; and that means that it is the responsibility of that individual to work for the citizens and not against them. Governors are the figureheads of the public majority, the person that is supposed to be the one voice that represents what the citizens want.
The Governor is not, as some have suggested, the Supreme Commander of the Watch. When a Governor has direct authority over a police force, that's a slippery slope towards military rule. The Commander of the Watch has full authority over the day-to-day operations of the Watch itself. The Governor merely implements policy, arranging the budget to match their needs, and helping to enact the laws that keep us all safe.
This is a city, not a country. There is no Commander-In-Chief acting as de facto leader of the military. The Governor is a representative of the people, and while military experience allows a Governor to make informed decisions about the policies of the Watch, that does not make his role a militaristic one, nor should it.
For most of my life, I've stood shoulder to shoulder with men and women that were fighting for prosperity, peace and safety. Working in the trenches, getting dirty, and not being afraid to lose face in times of adversity have forged the kinds of qualities that I feel would greatly assist me in performing my duties as the next Governor.
That, I feel, combined with a rational outlook concerning the role and duty of the Governor, sets me apart from the other candidates, nearly all of whom are stressing not just an increase in the Watch's power, but are already claiming they should have the right to be Supreme Commander of that power.
If elected, my goal will not be to lead the Watch. It will be to strengthen it as a tool for the people. It is a policing force, not a private army.
Why should I vote for you?
I believe it's imperative to simply vote above anything else. Officials cannot be elected without a turnout from the people. So before I tell you to "vote for me?, it's more important to just vote. So please do.
As your next Governor, I will work towards solving the problems that plague the people by understanding the things that affect us all. My only political agenda is what the people have been asking for. The crime level, slavery, pollution, health care; all of these issues need to be addressed accordingly. I know that I will be able to work with other elected officials and government bodies to greatly improve our society.
I'm not looking to lead a great power. I'm not looking to form armies or gather power. I'm looking to help make the city stronger. I'm looking to bolster the economy without imposing what essentially amounts to an embargo on foreign goods. I'm looking to make a great city that's seen some hard times get through them and come out the other side. I'm looking forward: not for me, but for all of us.
Again, thank you for your time and your concerns I hope that I addressed these in a timely and informative matter. I implore anyone that has any questions at all to please come forth and present your questions, and you can reply to my Campaign address. Election time is closely approaching and the choice for leader rests solely in your hands. I look forward to seeing everyone at the polls on Election Day.
Thank you,
