Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Fall 2011...
Paige was quiet, not telling Dean where they were going until they came to a very quaint little church. She was pulling his hand to get him up the steps and to the door. A church" Dean thought. She was taking him to church' He couldn't remember the last time he'd been in a church. Oh, wait....Yes, he could. It was when he'd killed Ruby, and Lucifer had been set free. Not since then. Church wasn't exactly a place Dean felt comfortable in, especially since his belief in God was iffy, at best. "Why are we here?" he asked, getting tugged reluctantly inside.
"You will see." She smiled to him. It was a cute church inside and she released his hand. "Wait here, okay?" And she sprinted off into the inner sanctum, disappearing behind a door into the back of the church itself.
Dean arched a brow as she disappeared leaving him standing awkwardly alone. In a church. He looked around, wondering if he should take a seat or just stand and wait, not to mention wondering what she was up to. He couldn't fathom why in the world she'd want to come here.
While she was gone, he looked around a little, finding it a cute little place, even though he still didn't really feel comfortable there. He'd suggested attending church to his father a few times as a kid, but his father had never thought it a very good idea.
A few minutes later Paige came back out, arm locked with a rather elderly man. He was chatting away to her ear, patting her arm warming as they approaching the altar. When he turned to see Dean, he gestured him over. "Come now, young man. Don't be bashful."
Dean turned to find Paige arm in arm with an older man, who he assumed was a man of the cloth, and he wondered again what was going on. Bashful" He wasn't sure what he was being bashful about. He pressed his lips tightly together and started toward the altar. "What's going on?" he asked curiously, more to Paige than the elderly man.
"Can you give us a moment?" She smiled to the old man before moving to Dean in all his confusion. Reaching a hand out, she looked up to him. "Here..now..Let's..Let's get married." Her cheeks darkened a bit.
Dean blinked, obviously surprised by her suggestion. Shocked really. Not unpleasantly so. It was just unexpected. But then, it made sense. Why else would she have brought him here" His own face paled at the suggestion, though he wasn't afraid, just surprised. "But....I thought..." He'd thought she wanted a big, white wedding surrounded by family, and he wanted to give her what she wanted. His face betrayed his confusion, a million thoughts suddenly flashing through his head. He took her hand, his expression changing, a questioning look in his eyes. "Are you sure?"
Her eyes lowered to his hands and she nodded a single time. "I am. We can always have a bigger wedding, if you want one but I.." She peeked up to him. "I am sure. But if you don't want to, don't feel that you have to. Really..."
He watched her silently a moment, as if trying to read her thoughts, make sure this is what she wanted. He didn't have a ring for her yet. He wasn't prepared for this, and yet, he knew he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
She seemed so sure. He didn't want her to have any regrets. He tilted her chin up to face him. "Paige, I love you..." he told her quietly. "It doesn't matter to me if we get married here today or if we have a big wedding with your family. I know what I want, and I want you." It was so....spontaneous, so impulsive, so sudden, but he knew what he was feeling and apparently, so did she.
Her head tilted and she looked up to him lovingly. "We can wait. Really.." Both arms went up and she hugged his neck. "I love you, Dean..I really..really do."
"I love you, too..." And as he said the words, he realized it didn't matter if they waited or not. Nothing was going to change how he felt about her. "If this is what you want, then, let's do it." He smiled at her, his eyes shining with happiness and adoration.
