Elessaria

The seamless band of silver caught a sliver of light that filtered through Elessaria's bedroom window. With deft and delicate fingers she placed it on the broken necklace that Connar had returned to her, then set it in the intricately carved rosewood box that held the physical reminders of precious memories. "S'il suffisait d'aimer," she whispered as she tucked the treasure against the sapphire velvet lining. When she closed the lid, the empath also closed that particular avenue of hopes and dreams. Hopes and dreams that had been doomed to perish beneath the twin burdens of duty and honour. Promises were made and promises were broken; yet, she could not harden her heart.

The years of infrequent visits had exacted more of an emotional toll than Eless had originally thought and offers to brave a new land in order to be with him had been rebuffed. Understandably so. The elfess could not live in a realm where those such as she were not believed to exist — even if she could survive in a land without magic, which was doubtful. The Valdor, noble and stoic, could not abide the gaspillage of RhyDin either. She had not fully comprehended the depths of his heart until she hurt it; rarely had she heard him mention their shared promise. Still, she could no longer endure the disappointments, the loneliness, nor deny the pain that each return and farewell inflicted upon her. There was so much she had wanted to say, to be able to explain, and yet, they will most likely forever remain unpoken.

She would always treasure the moments they shared; brief respites in the demands of both their lives. His support, his encouragement and his faith in her helped shape her into the woman she was now. And that woman had set foot firmly upon a new path that was once again lined with hopes and dreams. The diminutive elfess curled up on one of the sapphire cushions that created a plush nest of her window seat. Elbow propped on the window's sill and chin cupped in her upturned palm, she watched the snow sift slowly down and began to sing quietly. ~Parce que le temps peut mettre en cage Nos r'ves et nos envies Je fais mes choix et mes voyages Parfois j'en paie le prix La vie me sourit ou me blesse Mais quelle que soit ma vie~

The winter's chill seeped through the glass panes and she wrapped an ivory cashmere throw around nearly bare shoulders. A quick brush of the back of her hand over eyes of blue flame dispelled the tears that threatened to escape.

The melody faded and Elessaria stood slowly from the cushions, feeling more at peace than she had before. The next chapter in her life had already begun and she was making sure she would live it fully, savoring the renewed life that had been breathed into her.
