It's wrapped in festive paper, and bound with a crimson bow, Gem's name on the parchment tag in neat, flowing script. The package is soft, almost squishy to the touch.
Tearing off the paper reveals a folded coat of a soft and heavy wool, cut something like an ankle-length pea coat. It's a very subdued gray in color, and cut a little roomy for her, but very soft and very warm. There's an envelope in one of the pockets; the message within reads,
Merry Christmas, Gem!
I couldn't think of what color to get you, but despite my own preferences, black just didn't seem to be it. I had it enchanted for you; just hold it close and think of a color, and it'll change. I hope you like it!

That wasn't the only enchantment he'd had put on it, of course; but for all that he's a worry wart, he didn't see any reason to make her worry. It was proof to most weapons, as well as warded against fire, earth, air, and ice - water repellent, and half a dozen other things besides. It could even change size for its wearer, although it would always be just a little on the baggy side.
There's a silver necklace in the envelope as well, with a charm on it - a bird in flight, carved from some sort of odd crystal that looks, well, like fire might, if it were somehow frozen in mid-flame.
