The marketplace was bustling, even this late at night. Selene knew the shop she was headed for would be open. She had passed it so many nights before and stood staring at the fanciful display in the shop window. It changed with the seasons, and now was set up for the fall. The scene it set now was a doe and a stag of bronze under a tree made of bronze and crystal leaves. Soft light came from the tree giving the scene a life of its own.
But that wasn?t what she came here for tonight.
Tonight she was here on a mission. She moved to the other display window, one that held a selection of rings and bracelets fingers moving over the glass until she found the one she wanted. She smiled when she saw it was still there, and pushed open the glass doors and stepped inside.
The girl tending the counter was hardly more than a child. She had a friendly grin and an everyday appearance that just put people at ease. ?Evenin? Miss. See something pretty in the window? Maybe that bracelet with the rose quartz roses? It would look right pretty on you.? The child was so charmingly sincere that for a moment Selene was almost distracted from her mission.
?No, no, its very pretty but that?s not what I want.? She moved to the display again and very gently touched the object of her attention. It was a delicate band of white gold, set with five moonstones and a single piece of onyx, cut to shape the phases of the moon.
The shop girl smiled a little. ?We?ll have ta get that sized to fit you Miss. That there is a man?s ring.?
Selene blushed a little then gave an answering smile. ?I know. I want it for my husband.? She drew her purse out and carefully counted coins while the girl placed the ring in a delicate little box of silver and sky blue velvet.
Her purchase carefully secured she hurried home to see how Mia was getting along with the other preparations.
