The 20th of April would be three months to the day that Ethan had met Maeve. A lot can happen in three months, especially when you hadn?t intended any of it. What surprised Ethan was how quickly he?d grown attached to the minute woman who loved animals. He?d spent the last year of his life getting over a woman he dated for nearly 4 years and thought had loved him, only to find out that she hadn?t really loved him at all. This blow to his ego had been a great one and he truly believed that not even an angel sent by God himself could tempt him.
As men usually are, Ethan was wrong. Two night after arriving in town, he met a lovely girl who gave him a sideways high-five instead of a handshake. Her innocence and demure allure is what drew him. He?d laughed to himself when he realized what was happening. Ethan was falling for her and falling hard. It didn?t seem to come as a surprise to his family members, but Ethan wasn?t so sure this was what he wanted. Did he want to get hurt again? His heart was fragile, already having been broken twice. Not even all the pieces existed anymore. It pained him to be so attracted to a woman, yet be held back by fear.
But somehow, after the biggest mistake of his life, Ethan found himself drawn even more to Maeve. He?d even found the courage to tell her how he felt. Unfortunately, he?d hurt her and she was no longer open to being more than friends, but that didn?t stop Ethan from trying to get back to how things used to be.
Since that fateful day when he?d nearly lost everything, Ethan spent almost every day at the Refuge. Maeve avoided him for a long while, but slowly the two had gotten used to each other?s company again. Ethan purposely found excuses to be close to Maeve during his stays: planting flowers with her, volunteering for certain clean-up duties no one else liked, randomly showing up in places where he knew Maeve would be. And he didn?t understand it.
Why they continued to grow closer after Ethan had very nearly shattered their friendship was beyond everyone else. Ethan had confided in Tomas and Jahi about what he?d done with Chase. He was met with little resentment, but the two offered their own different advice. He knew they were upset that he?d hurt Maeve, but Ethan believed they were in on the plans to get himself and Maeve together. It was never spoken outright, but there were times when Ethan suspected some of the jobs he was put on with Maeve weren?t just coincidence.
Ethan was thankful that his brother was so understanding of his predicament and he doubted that Bradley would hinder a chance for his brother to find happiness because day by day, Ethan found himself getting more invested in the Refuge (ie, Maeve). More and more of his time was spent at the Refuge than in his own shop. The two would tend to animals together, ride out to herds together, fix things, work in the gardens, spend dinners around a table with family and friends. And yet they remained just friends. They've exchanged gifts, and yet their conversations continue to merely hint at attraction. Little comments here and there give Ethan hope, but something continues to hold him back.
His past holds steadfast as a weight, anchoring him to his troubles and sorrows. It remains a constant reminder of what could happen if he chooses to let go.
