On the Bus

Nordem woke up and leaned over on the edge of his bed like he normally did. He was up as early as he normally got up, and and had gone to bed the same time he normally went, too. But it was not any normal day. Instead of putting on his usual sportswear, he deposited them ? and several pairs of them ? into his duffel bag. Toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, antiperspirant, handwrap tape, jumprope, boxing shoes, all into the bag, and his silver watch he fitted and clamped onto his wrist.

All the other things he'd require such as shampoos and the like would be acquired locally when he got to Queensland. He preferred it that way. You could take small bits and pieces of your own country and culture with you wherever you went, but you could only make homier your conditions. Better to get adjusted to your surroundings.

Nordem decided he'd make one more stop around Adenna before going back to Rhydin to then slingshot over to Earth. The walk past the gym was somewhat bittersweet. He hadn't planned on visiting it due to the sensitive emotions that were sure to still be within its walls. What Robin said, or did not say about his departure from the Nest, couldn't help his reputation with the kids there that had thought something of him. In some ways he must have looked like a deserter, but they would have to go on thinking that uncontested. Nordem could have tried talking to them, but that was just the thing: he didn't have time anymore.

While he was still young enough, he had to climb to the top. To achieve that, he had to enter Earth's pool of competitors and operate out of a gym there. Luckily for him, he had done this before. He had his gym, workout, and living arrangements all covered. It was going to be the most beneficial training camp of his boxing career, and he wouldn't be able to take any apprenticing juniors with him. That would be the most regrettable part of this trip to him, but nevertheless, he still had to make it. As he came to pass the Nest, he did take the slightest comfort in knowing that Robin would continue to be the best coach those kids would have. Terry, Shannon and Kruger were given his blessings for a worthwhile and injury-free caper through their professional careers.

He came to Luci's Cafe with the intention of just staying as long as it took to order a slice of banana bread and an espresso and pick up the other half of his party that would be accompanying him to Earth. Inside was Techichi seated in the corner and gazing out the glass to the outside tables where a few pairs were seated and conversing and sipping their coffees. She spotted Nordem and looked confused as to how to react to him, same as he looked to her, but he was not so lost as to forget how to put their schedule back on track.

?Morning,? He started. ?Did you pack everything you'll need??

Still Tetch was reserved, confounded, and even hesitant to speak with him. The last time she had done so had been out of rage, and she was slowly coming to understand that it had been reactionary rage, and not the appropriate response she would have given normally. She was coming to grips that she had done so out of an insecurity and a sort of ignorance that she had discussed with Rijn in the library several days prior to now. It was a series of realizations that led to her being here, and her accompanying Nordem on his training camp. But it wouldn't be to work on her jab.

?Few shirts... a few pants... few shoes,? She answered him hushedly, something so new and unlike her that the persons ordering ahead of Nordem even had to peek out of the corner of their eye and make sure it was the same Techichi. ?If I need anything else, I can buy it.?

?That's what I plan on doing, too,? Nordem said. He was next in line, but he prayed his cashier wait just the moment for him to conclude a final piece of business with the Siovanui. ?Are you ready to walk out the door now? After I get my coffee I'm meeting Bruce and we're out of here.?

?Ready when you are,? Tetch said, and took a breath of the stereotypical depth. She didn't like not-knowing what awaited her in this foreign land. Particularly she didn't like being in an unknown place with all new faces and it being during this time when she felt weakest and not at all confident in her identity. But such was the reason she herself had come up with in her lonesome and emotional deliberation. She stood and held onto the back of her opposite arm while looking aside from Nordem's discerning stare.

Nordem nodded and placed his order.

Leaving Adenna was very otherworldly. Stepping outside of comfort and sameness and reassuring settings. Rijn consulted his portal codex and saw them out of the city privately and without drama in the concealed back room of the library upon a circular marble floor vacant of all things and a perfect place to open their way. The outskirts of Rhydin City would lay a short walk to yet another hub where they would meet up with Bruce Mackay and then bounce over to Earth and meet their awaiting bus; appointment after appointment after appointment.

The time in Rhydin wouldn't be longer than forty-five minutes, with a hefty chunk of that being Bruce's tying off loose ends at a gym he had been working part-time at. In that sense, he and Nordem were the same. They had been doing part-time what they felt they should be working fully at. Wasted efforts no more. That was the plan.

Again they sought the resources of a personal portal. There were public passages to Earth, but they were just that: public. Low-profile as Nordem had always been, he also came into the public eye only when was necessary, and out of nowhere. Bruce knew how Nordem was, and he was very much the same in that regard. It would benefit Techichi that she was also hoping for a private getaway in one of the very few expectations she was hoping for on this trip.

When they passed through what would be their final portal for some months, it was just the walk down the street and onto the bus that remained. Officially, Tetch felt out of place. For Bruce and Nordem, this was all part of the routine, and they were only looking at the gym that awaited at the end of the bus ride rather than all of the people and the culture surrounding them that Techichi was looking at. In Rhydin, Tetch had seen some of the elements and pieces of culture and some modernizations that she was looking at now, but never before had she seen it apart of a people's entirety. Typically one person had a sword, another person a grimoire, another a firearm, and maybe one would have a cell phone. Everyone here had a cell phone.

She was taken a step aback while getting on the bus to see such busy human beings en route to their destinations and meetings and dates and things. Of course what was also present was that which she had come here to learn about, and that was the interaction between couples. There were quite a majority of solo-traveling persons on the streets, but coming in a close second were the hand-holders and inseparable. Tetch barely had time to start observing when they were signaled to cross their street, and she risked being lost by her party that had chosen to ignore her entirely. Nordem wouldn't bother grabbing her bag strap at her shoulder to guide her along when she goofed off. They'd already had one fight, and now they were here for her to learn to control that anger she'd let loose. He'd give her her space, and that meant letting her do her thing.

The heat was blistering, and the prepped bus in all its air-conditioned splendor was well-received by the Mackay team coming to rally their banner under The Rose Boxing Gym with coach Mitch Rose and their star boxer, Ky-Katsidis Millar. The Rose gym was a great deal larger than The Nest was, and remained the largest of the gyms Nordem had signed with (not to be mistaken with the largest gym Nordem had been to). Everyone was on the bus today to ride the decent length to the registration office and renew old contracts and forge new ones for new members. Being that Mitch operated a gym with world championship contenders, such a process that oversaw such great quantities of money was very much appropriate. Meanwhile, Nordem possessed an Earth record and rated in on the championship level as well from when his efforts had been made on the planet nearly a decade ago.

Tetch let him take the lead while he moved back on the bus and greeted those he knew. He shook Ky's hand and gave half of a hug to Mitch before placing his duffel bag on the bright steel rack overhead and finally acknowledged her and beckoned her own bag. She slid it off her shoulder and handed it to him before slipping into a seat on a side without another elbow to intimately rub, and the words from Mitch at the head of the bus comforted her for the telling of the extensive, nothing-to-do drive to come.

?Have everyone's attention for a moment? Today's a great day. We've got a whole new season ahead of us, we do, and fresh starts for everybody ? and continuing excellence out of some others. Some of you may recognize a past member of ours? Nordem Sparks, right there. He is a champion, so if you have any questions, don't bother him.? The gray-haired trainer elicited exactly two laughs out of the bus, but identified himself as the easy-going.
?And an old friend of mine, Bruce Mackay. Bruce will be coming on with us as a second coach, so don't hesitate to ask him anything. These guys are one of us, and they'll be training with us for a while. Some other of you on the bus, this is your first time signing with us professionally. You've come a long way, but don't slack up now. We've now got two world title contenders punching bags with us in the mornings, and I'm expectin' that to turn into three, and four, and five and six and however many of you wanna do me and yourselves proud. If the world is not your goal, then my gym might not be for you, and you might not need to sign or resign this season. I train champions. If you want to wear the most prestigious belt around your waist, then by all means, let's go sign some paperwork.? He clapped his hands together once and everyone else did theirs.

The Siovanui kissed her forehead to the cold window glass and pushed everything aside, even her thoughts. The bus released its brakes, which Techichi wouldn't understand the finer details of but understood enough to know it was about to be underway. She didn't know just how long this was going to be, but knew it would be good for her. Whether or not it would be quiet the whole trip would soon answer itself when Nordem came to sit beside her, but not before offering her a walkman and a pair of headphones.

?In an hour you'll be glad you had a friend like me,? He said.
