"Much of history in space has been shrouded by war."
-Kane Belarus

Since the discovery of faster than light travel via hyperspace, and later warpspace, the expansion of Avixian across the cosmos can only be described as rapid. The first wave of tribes leaving the Avix system colonized a wide variety of systems with of varying distances to Avix. This event was known as the First Seed and effectively established itself as a super power. Though many colonies in close proximity to the Avix system found it helpful to maintain strong ties with the Empire, very few sought to escape their effective rule or try to cut ties.

This was followed by nearly three centuries of peaceful prosperity as the colonies braved the harshness of their new environments and helped other alien species benefit from their presence. However, as the growing colonies found themselves faced with internal power-struggles, a second wave of Imperial expansion occurred in which the splinter elements of the so-called "Eldernation" broke away to form their own governing bodies, sometimes by force. While on the whole this Second Seed did not result in all out war, tension between the first and second generation colonies did not subside.

In 418 Soa (Seed Era) the newly formed Yellow Rose Concordat, a collection of three systems bordering the Tesla Nebula, launched a surprise attack on the piratical Republic of Anthra. This attack touched off a series of conflicts and expanded to include nearly every major and minor colonial power as each moved to settle old scores and/or expand their territory. This massive series of conflicts, known as the Seed Wars, allowed the first major multi-system governments with strong military and political presences to form (such current powers as the Belarus, Redstar, and Korben Houses trace their beginnings here).

Following the Seed Wars, almost four centuries of near constant strife rocked the cosmos as many First and Second generation colonies attempted to gain the upper-hand on one another with varying degrees of success. During this time, a third pseudo seed occurred when several of the largest Star-nations deteriorated with their leadership being driven into exile, the Orcynai nation of Onsiji was one of them. Most notable of these fractures occurred within the Kingdom of Redstar, whose destruction gave birth to nearly a dozen new nation-states which later re-merged to form the Kingdom of the Crimson Star, a key signatory of the Unites Core Systems.

In 901 Soa, the D?jiiahl Federation suffered a violent schism in the government after nearly 500 years of rapid expansion. Aki Strodeus declared himself emperor of the Federation. The newly renamed Strodious Star Empire quickly consolidated its territory and for seven-thousand and sixty-one years the SSE was (for the most part) victorious in every war it fought.

However, in 7,962 Soa, a coalition of the five largest stellar nations was able to halt and completely shatter the SSE, forcing them to accept peaceful integration into the newly formed United Space Navy (USN). This marked the end of wide scale conflict in and around the stellar core (excluding the neutral Onsiji Nation Tribes, Obeian Hegemony, and so-called K'rynai Republic).

The United Space Navy | Tension Tightens

Originally the brainchild of Kane Belarus and Jin Belarus; Jin was a successful diplomat and Kane a well-seasoned General, both of which have royal origins dating back before the first Quantum Ripple. The USN was unofficially established in 8,000 Soa as a secret military alliance to counter the growing predations of the Strodeus Star Empire whose new emperor, Aki Strodeus VII, was showing signs of continuing the expansionist campaign begun by his father, Aki VI. The alliance consisted of five stellar nations who either shared a common border with the SSE or recognized the threat it posed. The signatories included the Imperial Republic of Belarus (IRB), the Tradenation of Korben (ToK), Cloud Continum (CC), Kingdom of the Crimson Star (KCS) and the Onyx Dragon Tribe (BD).

Each nation pledged mutual defense for one another in the event of war with a foreign power, but this ostensibly referred to any hostile acts on the part of the SSE toward USN member-states. While carefully shrouded in secrecy, this first alliance remained relatively untested for several thousand years. As the SSE border seemed to be settling down, several members began to doubt the wisdom of being entangled in such an alliance, especially given the new trade opportunities beginning to materialize within Strodeus space. Still anticipating an imminent attack, the Imperial Republic of Belarus, the Kingdom of the Crimson Star, and the tradenation of Korben quietly built up their respective navies while the rest of their allies plotted new ways to reap the riches of an alliance with the SSE.

Unification War | A Terrible Loss

In 8,405 Soa, the Strodeus Imperial Space Navy surprised everyone by raiding the relatively unimportant library-world of Index, in the Archive system before proceeding with the single largest coordinated assault in post-Seed history. The SISN launched coordinated strikes on over five-hundred systems, completely bypassing the fortified defensive perimeter established by the Continuum and the Onyx Dragon, and assaulting nearly several-dozen stellar nations at once. The effect was unprecedented, immediately calling on the promises made prior to the signing of the Imperial charter, the Cloudisians and members of the Onyx Dragon cried out for assistance from the IRB, ToK, and KCS, all three of which had been able to repel the onslaught of the Imperial Navy.

Honoring their agreement, units belonging to the respective navies of each country joined together under the banner of the Unites Core Systems. Their first task as an allied navy was daunting, halting the second wave of Strodeus attacks. Choosing Ovix, the capital-system of the little-known K'rynai Republic, as a staging area the newly formed United Space Navy launched its first attack into the Strodeus Imperial Occupation Zone (IOZ) in a counter-strike designed to dilute Strodeus naval strength long enough for the Allies to form more solid defensive plans. As smaller nations flocked to the USN banner for the protection, it's navy grew stronger and bolder.

Despite superior leadership and courage, it took nearly Seven years of grinding combat before USN forces finally halted the Strodeus advance at the Battle of Dragoon in 8,412 Soa. Following Dragoon, the USN claimed a string of victories over the beaten Strodeus Space Navy pushing them well out of USN space and driving deep into Strodeus space. The decisive battle of the war came in 8,601 Soa in the Rhy'Din system where USN won a desperate victory with a large sacrifice over the beleaguered remnants of the SISN. Aki VII had commandeered Imperial worldship Panriji, which housed the Royal families, and dubbed "impenetrable" for nearly seven-thousand years. Had been self destructed by Kane Belarus, destroying himself along with Aki VII and SISN remnants. Leaving his Wife, Jin a widow.

With the death (assassination) of Aki VII aboard Panriji and the occupation of the SSE, the United Space Navy settled on a second charter that bound the member nations more tightly together under a single governing entity. The new Avix Space Federation (ASF) combined all of the existing national navies under the umbrella of the USN relegating them to a reserve status. The USN itself was drawn and trained from all ASF member-nations, and thus retained few national ties found in national navies.

Representatives from each nation convened year-round in a grand-parliamentary style body to establish laws with a new prime-minister elected every Seven years (Jin Belarus served for several dozen consecutive terms before retiring from public service, she devoted her time to her four children and scientific research aboard the Panriji.)

National borders remained but, ostensibly, in name only, all trade, taxation, and regulation became the domain of peace for the Federation, allowing it to grow. Individual systems and nations were allowed to build and maintain craft, but in a regulated fashion and only in proportion to their needs. Wider authority was vested in the USN which drew its officer corps from all corners of the Federation. While national navies still existed, by and large the USN took over much of the domestic (intra-national) and foreign exercises. Despite the seemingly radical changes in power that led to the establishment of the Federation, it was remarkably stable, and an unprecedented peace reigned for several millenia.

Second Hand | Enough Rope?

Despite the resolution of the war, the indomitable spirit of the Strodeus people was hardly phased. Despite the violence and chaos that gave birth to the first generation of ruling powers, the political and social system of the Strodeus Empire had been remarkably stable and robust. From the 14 core systems outward, the Empire's control usually manifested in actual improvements in the living standards of conquered worlds. While the captive populace would never gain true citizenship, it was possible to become a so-called "Second Hand" through a series of military and government positions. Which brought them to be known as the Second Hand Nation (SHN).

These positions remained open to all, citizen and non-citizen alike, and offered the chance of family advancement through hard work. As a result, within a generation, many conquered worlds unsurprisingly found life under Second Hand rule preferable to their previous Strodeus condition. With the allure of the extensive merchant networks and the safety and protection of the Imperial Space-Navy, conquered worlds were quickly assimilated.

All of this contributed to a strange situation in the second decade of SHN occupation. Unrest on many of the core worlds of the Strodeus cluster lead to the induction of several new representatives from Second Hand to the Senate in 40 Fi (Feather Era.) Over the next 11 years the 14 core-worlds were authorized to send representatives of their worlds to attend parliamentary proceedings, despite heavy opposition from more conservative coalitions.

In particular Maleseus Ordo of the Cloud Continuum, head of the "conservative" wing of the senate, particularly detested these new additions and fought for several years to block legislation legitimizing the government of the reformed Second Hand Nation. Despite this opposition, the SHN was officially recognized by the Federation in 53 Fi.

It did not take long for the Second Hand block to become a deeply influential voice in the Senate. Much of the early action of the new government were organized around the repatriation of the many formerly conquered worlds, now independent, which expressed deep desires to rejoin the previous Empire. While this was ultimately doomed to failure, it did outline a very serious power vacuum in former Strodeus space, which spanned thousands of light-years and included nearly a hundred worlds. Though highly sympathetic to these planets, Prime Minister Tora also recognized the danger of allowing a precedent of repatriation to be set that might preclude the actual reformation of the Strodeus Empire itself. As a result, external Second Hand diplomacy met with failure on every front.

Frustrated, but not deterred, the Second Hand Nation (and its representatives) toned down their rhetoric slowly and deliberately, while the storm of the former Imperial worlds grew. When Tora Korben declined to run for Prime Minister a 73rd time, the seeds of weakness sewn by her departure were silently capitalized by the Second Hand. Over the course of the next hundred years, the Second Hand Nation would become a powerful, if largely silent force in USN proceedings.
