The Outback
Early Morning
(Takes place during early June 2012)

The soft chime of music met the woman's ears. Soft rustling of blankets brought an outstretched hand reaching to take hold of the still buzzing cell phone. She rose and sat up -- causing thin sheets to fall from feminine frame and gather about within her lap. ".. So early.." She murmured. The foggy feeling of being half-awake still overpowering her enough to cause the smallest bit of a wobble while she sat there upon the softness of her bed.

"Ugh.." She groaned. Reaching once more, this time to gather glasses. The world wasn't so blurry when she slipped them over her features, and neither were those two words that she read on the small screen.

Dad died

It's been five years since she spoke with her brother
.. and this was the text that broke the ice.

Emerald Bay
Late Night

Emerald Bay hasn't changed much. Would of expected at least a new fast food joint after five years.. Or at least one of those big chain supermarkets.

It was night when she arrived. Maybe once the sun rose she could really see what kind of place Emerald Bay has become since her departure those few years ago. Then again, it was a constant reminder to why she was here. Why she even returned to this small port town.

Right.. Dad's dead.

Six and a half hours by bus. Another forty by taxi. But in the end, there she was. In front of the house she spent the first sixteen years of her life. If it wasn't for the silence breaking cough, Andrea might of forgotten the taxi driver was even there. "Sorry.. How much?" It didn't matter how much. She was just going through the motions. Card handed to the driver so he could go along with his business. The guy was nice enough, he tried making small talk at first - but in the end the ride turned into a rather quiet one.

`Have a nice night.` He said after pulling her two bags of luggage out from the trunk. A laugh caught in Andreas throat when she reflected on those words. Yeah.. a nice night.

Alone then. Looking to that single light that lit a still dark porch, and the door that should've felt inviting.. but instead, caused her stomach to turn in fear.

One step. Two steps. Three steps. Andrea was on the porch by then. The old wood creaking ever so lightly while she stepped across it. She could hear noise from the other side of the door.

The television. Someone was still awake.

She hadn't announced her intent on visiting. It was a spur of the moment idea that came to her the second she got the news. They would expect her to come, wouldn't they? Her father was dead - after all. It was a time for the family to come together and mourn.

Bottom lip was taken between rows of teeth and gently bitten upon. Andrea waited. There was no movement to knock at that door, nor ring the bell. Seconds turned to minutes till she finally found the courage to bring up a closed fist to knock knuckles to the hardwood door.

Knock, knock, knock. Every knock made her feel worse and worse.

Please be Mom.. please, be Mom.. It was all she could think right now. She didn't know what her brother was doing with his life, but she knew he was still living with their parents. Though it had been a year since her Grandmother had told her this. He could have moved out, but the fear was still there.

A fear that left her, as did a sigh of an exhaled breath, when the door opened to reveal the person she wanted. Her Mother.

"Can I help you..?" The woman spoke in an unsure voice.

".. Hey, Mom.." She started. For a second, the woman looked perplexed by her choice of words. ".. It's me." Andrea could see it then. That split second of realization.

"Andrew?"

Don't call me that.. I've told you..

".. yeah." She answered weakly. Trying her hardest to fight back the urge to correct her. Now wasn't the time. Just - not now. ".. It's me.."

Four months.. and I now found out about it..

Four months. Her father had been dead and gone for the past four months.

Andrea sat there on the couch trying to process everything. ".. How'd it happen?" It wasn't what she really wanted to ask. She wanted to yell, she wanted to scream. `Why didn't you tell me?!` - `Why am I the last to know?!`. But she couldn't. She felt too tired right now. Completely drained.

His heart. Of course it was his heart. Oh, wait. Andrea wouldn't of known about that.

She didn't even know about his first heart attack.

Everything was at least easier. She expected her mother to be in tears, yet the woman didn't even shed the smallest while she spoke. No, she was even cooking while she spoke to her from the kitchen. Did she cry? No. The tears Andrea spared for her father happened after she received the text and during that time of reflection given to her in the form of a long bus ride. Right now, she felt too tired.

Too tired to even pay much attention to the conversation. She had been sitting in the same spot for a few hours now. Her mother told her everything.. how lovely the service was, how Uncle Ron even read the eulogy.

How they spread the ashes into the sea. Nothing was left of him. No grave, no mark, just memories. That?s all she had in the end.

"So.. you're still doing.. this."

Right. Of course once the talk of the funeral was over, things would turn to that. Andrea didn't even know how to answer. Oh - she knew, but she didn't feel like she had it in her to even make the attempt. All she did was lower her eyes and stare to her lap. "Yeah.." It was all she could muster up the nerve to say.

The sounds of her mother working in the kitchen; It was the only thing that kept the house from becoming dead quiet.

"Do you have a boyfriend?"

It came up as the two of them sat at the table. Andrea was just about to take a bite of chicken when the question was asked. Her mouth kept open, her eyes looking directly at the woman who sat across from her. Andrea was in a mixed state right now. Call it shocked and confused. She never expected a question like this to be asked.

No, not after the first time. She could still remember that black eye she had gotten when that conversation happened. It was also the last night she lived under this roof.

".. I have a girlfriend.. Her name's Rayvinn.." she said after a long pause. The word girlfriend must have done something for her mother. The look on her face. She looked.. Happy. At least until her next question was asked.

"Is she a.. real woman? Or.." Andrea knew where she was going with this. She swallowed back roughly while setting fork down against plate. Anger started to brew. She's confused.. It's okay, she's just confused.. she doesn't understand. She tried to tell herself. ".. She's a woman.. can have babies and everything."

There must of been a hint of anger in her tone, as her mother was quick to respond with, "I didn't mean to upset you."

"I'm.. not upset." Andrea said with a tired expression.

"I'm not talking to that f*ggot."

Yup. That's my brother.

Nice to know you're still living here with Mom. Guess there needed to be someone to take care of her after Dad died, or at least that's a good enough excuse to make yourself feel better.

It beats freeloader.

If only she could say that out loud. No, she didn't have the courage to even attempt it.. and even thinking it was wild. Andrea couldn't believe the words came to her mind, and quickly shook her head to try and push them away. But when she did that, her stomach began to grow upset again.

Why?d you even text me..?

She would of rather spent the evening without seeing him.. but, there he was. The look he gave to her from the hallway wasn't one that felt welcoming. The complete opposite -- it made her skin crawl in fear.

A fear in her heart that grew more when her mother asked if she'd be staying the night.

"Your rooms the same! Just like you left it." Yes. Left it.. not that she had any say in that matter.

".. No, it's fine.. I rented a hot--" But she was quickly cut off by the older woman's words. "No, no. You'll stay here." Along with other reasons as to why she shouldn't leave. Andrea just sat there, allowing the woman to continue speaking on.. but not really paying attention to the words she spoke.

Either way. She was here for the night. Her room really did look the same.. That same old computer, the queen size bed.. even the ceiling still had those glow-in-the-dark stickers. It brought back memories. Getting baked and staring up at those glowing constellations.

Her reminiscing was interrupted by the sound of rock music being played in the next room over. It reminded her of something she needed to get out of the way. The sound drew her closer, and closer to the door that separated the room she used to call her own from the bathroom. A shared bathroom. On the other side, where the rhythmic thumping of music was currently coming from -- it was the room that held her brother.

There was a soft click when she gently, and quietly closed the bathroom door. Her fingers pinching down onto that lock so that she could give it a twist and set it in place. Palm had been pressed against the door, and soon enough her forehead did the same while green eyes closed themselves. Just locking the door alone made her feel a little more safe, but it was a false sense of safety in the end.. if he wanted to get past it, he could. But she just had to remind and try to trick herself by saying he wouldn't.

He's older now.. both of us are. You?ll be fine..

Andrea didn't sleep that night.

It just wouldn?t come to her. Sleep. The smallest sort of sounds coming from the direction of that bathroom caused her to go on alert. Why?d I even stay here.. - it brought up that question. Being too fearful to even sleep; she was only hurting herself in the end.

Cell phone clutched within tightly curled fingers. The thought of calling Rayvinn came to mind. Her voice could bring some feeling of ease to this situation gone horribly wrong; but that would require talking. Talking wasn?t something she couldn?t do right now. Even after five years, she was afraid to make even the smallest of peeps to upset her elder brother.

Not even here for one night and she was already settling back into old habits.. that?s what made this even more scary.

Another sound. Andrea shifted on the bed. Turning to face the direction of the bathroom door. Light illuminating out from under it. He was in there. Her breath caught, not wanting to make even the smallest sound to draw his attention.

Twenty one years old and she?s still doing this. She grit her teeth upon realization. That bottled up anger surfacing once more. But she did nothing with it. Her face instead found pillow, and her eyes tightly squeezed closed.

Why am I even here..?!

Her father died four months ago. Four. If she only knew that.. she might not have even come. No. That was a lie. Even if she knew, she still would have been laying on top of this bed.

You
Why am I even here?

The question came up again. This time in the form of a text. She didn?t know why she sent that question to Raye, but it?s all she could think of while sitting there on the soft sand of Emerald Bay?s beach. What was a hotspot for tourists during the egg-hatching season for the sea turtles was nothing but abandoned during this time. Nice, void of any human life but herself. The sound of those rolling waves were calming. Andrea hadn?t heard them in such a long time.. There were other beaches, but Emerald Bay would always her beach.

She had left the house. For the second time in her life. She left. Only a single note left behind to explain.

Mom,

My life is different now. I can?t stay here.

I?ll always love you.

Another drag of that cigarette was taken. Finger tapping against to cast ash to the side as she exhaled. The light of her phone flashing on. A signal that she had just received a text.

Raye
Because the multiverse would be at a loss without your smile.

Andrea read that and couldn?t help but smile. A smile only obscured by a pained expression that found her features a split second later. Her shoulders rose and shook and tears began to fall. Andrea didn?t hold back when she dialed Rayvinns number. The only words that somehow passed through her lips between sobs were, ?I just need to hear your voice..?

Without sleep. Andrea watched the sunrise that morning.

...

A forty minute taxi ride. Another six and a half hours by bus. She returned to RhyDin. Here. This city. It was her home now.

Emerald Bay may hold her past, but this city was her future.
