Sitting upon the ground in front of the marker for Dyarhk?s memorial, Raye was trying to arrange some fresh flowers with one hand; speaking softly as she did so, as if Dyarhk was sitting next to her and could hear every word. Maybe he could, who really knew?
?Sorry I was gone for so long, Mellonamin.(Elvish for ?my friend?) I was out of the country and couldn?t visit you. It looks like someone took care of your flowers while I was away, though, so that?s good...?
Raye?s voice trailed off as she wasn?t entirely sure what to say next. Should she speak of what had occurred while she was gone? Should she confess the colossal mess she made of everything? Should she pour out all of the anguish she was so careful to hide when anyone else was around? Sometimes words gave life and made a situation seem real...Rayvinn wasn?t ready for reality just yet.
Instead of speaking, she stretched out on the cool ground, hearing the protest of the grass crunching below her as it became a bed for her weary body. Her uninjured arm was propped beneath the back of her head and her sling encased arm lay flat upon her chest as she stared up at RhyDin?s two moons and the brilliance of the stars.
Perhaps it was the hypnotic twinkling that drew Rayvinn?s mind from the present time...
The stars seemed close enough to touch as she sat on the balcony outside of her room, on the fourth floor of the Tevlak?s home. The rest of the compound, much like a military base, stretched out around her but there was a surprising lack of noise. Elven hearing picked up the waves lapping against the coastline and the song of the cicada but there were no unnatural noises upon the air.
A soft sigh left Raye?s lips as she tried to force herself to wind down enough to go to bed. Her mind was nearly buzzing, she was so keyed up, so she slid from the lounge chair and pulled on a thigh length white silk robe over her underclothes. Padding barefoot to the door, she opened it enough to stick her head out and looked each way before mustering the courage to step into the hallway.
Once the door to her room was closed, Rayvinn made her way quickly to the staircase and flitted down the stairs, with delicate boned fingers trailing along the gleaming, intricately carved banister. Finally arriving on the first floor, she turned right and then moved silently down the hallway until she stood just outside Aborin?s study. An ear was pressed to the door, listening to discern if anyone was inside and once she was convinced no one was, the double door handles were twisted to permit her entrance. Surprisingly, the doors were unlocked.
No light was needed since she could see just as well in the dark as she could in the light. Bare feet tread softly where heeled boots had boldly tapped earlier, carrying her to the other side of the room where several decanters of alcohol sat upon a table beneath the window. A glass was pulled from the tray next to the decanters and each one was lifted and sniffed until the brandy was located. After filling the glass half full, the decanter was replaced next to the tray while Rayvinn?s gaze was drawn past the window to the manicured lawn that sprawled before the elaborate home. Silvery moonlight poured through the opening between filmy pale curtains and danced along bronzed skin and raven hair that had been freed from the confines of its earlier coif, casting an otherworldly appearance to Raye?s form.
As she sipped the brandy, mesmerized by the undisturbed loveliness before her gaze, the sound of the door opening snapped her attention back to the present moment. Turning quickly, she found herself staring at a shadowed form standing in the back lit doorway, watching her watch him. He had the upper hand in this situation as he could see her far more clearly than she could see him; perhaps one of the first times that situation had ever arisen for Rayvinn with her enhanced vision. She knew the figure was male, however, by his height and broadness of shoulder.
The form took two steps inside the room before turning to shut the door. Several more steps were taken until he was standing a hand?s breadth away, the elf now the one enshrouded by light. Rayvinn?s hair had been brushed until the feel of silk was rivaled and the light of the moon glittered and shone off of the hip length waves as if every strand was infused with it. The man, now recognized as Aborin Tevlak, lifted a hand more familiar with touching the cool metal of a sword?s hilt or the grip of a pistol, and almost reverently brushed his fingers across the gleaming silken strands.
Rayvinn had remained unmoving and silent until that moment. Perhaps it was the jolt of what felt like an electrical current flowing through her that caused her to find her voice once more or maybe it was the sudden urge to run nonstop until she was back in RhyDin. Regaining her composure, she cleared her throat softly before speaking.
?I..I couldn?t sleep and remembered seeing the decanter of brandy earlier. I shouldn?t have...I...I was just going back to my room.?
Rayvinn made no move to step around or away from him, however, as her gaze lifted to rest upon his momentarily. His hand slipped from her hair to rest at his side once more and a wry smile finally took it?s place upon a face previously devoid of emotion.
?I could not sleep either and also thought to have a drink. Perhaps you would join me in drinking my mind into submission??
A soft chuckle punctuated the invitation and Raye felt the tension within her uncoiling ever-so-slightly. She really wanted to go back to her room, but what tidbits of information would she miss out on if she didn?t take this opportunity to speak with Tevlak alone, sans advisors and others with an influence?
?Of course. Though I think you fight a losing battle. You do not strike me as a man that submits easily.?
?What sort of man do I ?strike you as? Ms. Darkmont??

Rayvinn and Aborin were still sitting within his study, discussing everything from politics to the newest fashions when the first light of dawn lightened the sky to a pale gray and cast a glow of red, yellow, and pink across the bay. There had been no lull in the conversation and no discussion of work as small talk.
Reluctantly, Aborin stood and held out his hand to assist Rayvinn from her chair.
?It wouldn?t bode well for your reputation to be seen by the household staff leaving my study in your nightclothes, Ms. Darkmont, so I regretfully release you from my company. I will not be in need of the services of an appraisor until this evening, perhaps you might find yourself able to sleep this morning so you are refreshed for the appointment.?
Raye dimpled a smile in response to his concern over her reputation as she turned to leave, tossing a lilting one word response over a silk clad shoulder.
?Perhaps.?
