Kruger

Kruger had been fine with this up to the moment that Robert Rivers Esquire answered the door. His frustration with the man sat just under his skin. He felt the man had blatantly ignored all invitations out to Belglade. He had been prepared to throttle the man, till the discovery that his wife had taken ill. It could have been an elaborate ruse, but he chose to give the man benefit to his doubts.

The chamber was not overly elaborate, it gave the impression it was meant to. Rivers was adept at his job and could afford to furnish appropriately. There was quality in the chair which Shai and he sat. Shai handed those papers to the man, his eyebrows slowly made their way northwards towards his thinning hair line.

?Has there been a marriage that I am unaware of?? His tone held doubt and perhaps a hint of something more akin to lust. Shai was quick to shut him down, berating him for his question and implying that his only function was to serve as the witness to what was about to occur. Kruger?s face held a satisfied smirk as the man looked as though Shai had reached out and slapped him. Her ferocity had his heart fluttering.

?Of course Miss Vevea.? Rivers? tone reminded Kruger of a kicked dog. The solicitor began to read though the papers that named him as her executor to her estate. It went on to give him Abri nan sy?l la in the event of her death. Those words hung in his head, in the event of her death? He hadn?t considered it before, or perhaps he just hadn?t realized what it meant. Rivers asked him if he understood and agreed to what was contained within those pages. His heart began to ache; to sign was to acknowledge that she was mortal, that she could be gone at any moment.

It took effort to keep the tears he felt in his eyes from falling. His hands shook with the effort making his signature become progressively worse. As Rivers would finish a page and ask the smith once more if he understood and agreed to what was held within. The page relinquished to Kruger to sign, he kept his head down, and spoke quietly as he answered.

Somehow through the emotions building within he remembered Shai, and that this was her expression of love for him. He would accept her will, and rage against anything that may wish to claim her. He could feel their eyes on him, or perhaps he was just being overly sensitive. It wouldn?t be the first time that he had allowed that to happen. When the last page had been signed, and Rivers thought their business concluded, the smith opened a discussion on the other properties in Belglade. Rivers attempted to sidestep the question, until he understood that Kruger was willing to take his money elsewhere to make inquiries. The loss of the types of sums promised by the acquisition of property was too great to allow. Rivers promised to make the inquiries and get back with the smith, and Lady Vevea.

They had been shown the door; perhaps the man had hurried them for reasons of his own. Kruger chose to believe the man was out of sorts to the events that had taken place. That Shai had threatened to remove her business from him may have been a great shock. It may explain why Kruger felt that the man had formed an opinion of him that was less than flattering. The darkening sky prompted them to hail a cab, and ride home rather than walk.
