The property was quiet, and had been for several hours, work had not completed. Kruger doubted that work would ever really be finished, there was always something more to do. He took a break from the work he had been doing. Pauses came between projects for him, and the air outside the forge was cool by comparison to that which was stifled within. Amber eyes looked to the windows of the house trying to catch a glimpse of Shai moving through the rooms.

During these hot summer months, generally the children were all down by the shore, basking in the splinters of sunlight and relishing in the glory that was a sweltering heat that dared to admit it was balmy. A routine in fact had been in place for months and months.

Some went about their own way, the constants of Belglade. Where the fever of life was as vigorous as blood pumping through veins. It was in those quiet times, something would always draw her to the open windows and surely, he would be down there with his cocky little grin and impish demeanor ready to unfold in some blasphemous show of...manly prowess. It was this day however that when Shai slipped onto the sill, she regarded him a long moment. "Is the devil's work completed finally, or are you escaping from the clutches, mon amour?"?

His laugh would sound at her words, the grin would of course come out with that laugh. "It's funny I'd heard the devil preferred idle hands, yet the work never really finishes. An escape then, enough done now that I can take time to do other things."? The leather apron was pulled from him and hung on a nail just inside the door. "Perhaps the devil is tempting me away from the work mon amour?"

"Mmmm...perhaps. But it will remain our secret that in fact I consider myself the Devil's Mistress and you of course, my Devil." Sweat gleamed a path across dark skin and good Saint's, it was hot. "The fall cannot come soon enough..." That muttered, she opened the window fully and spared a glance across the landscape where it rested towards the woods and the small bridge not far away. "Would you like something cold to drink, or perhaps some company if you chose a swim?" A little grin twitching her lips, surely he could not refrain, eh??

He ran an arm across his forehead taking perspiration and leaving behind a streak of darkness. "Perhaps I am the devil, only my mistress would know. Something cold would be welcome, and I think the swim is more for your pleasure than mine. I will meet you at the door love and walk there with you." He started toward the front of the house conscious of his dirty state and still lacking the understanding of what she saw in it when she looked at him.

Removing herself from the sill, it would be a few minutes until she was moving through the front door, barefoot as could be and holding a large glass of chilled water and a pitcher to match it. "I fear if I lower myself into that creek, I will not be able to get back up without one of those contraptions you and Gio rigged up when clearing the bottoms for firewood last winter." As it was, she could barely see her feet these days, much less touch them. "Here, drink this. What are you working on?" The billows continued to flow freely from the Forge, higher and higher yet into the afternoon sky.

The water was taken and he drank perhaps a little too quickly. "I just finished something for a client, more a reforming, tricky though they wish to preserve the integrity of its enhancement. It has its own heat source, I expect it was meant for use against those things which can regenerate." He didn't need to say the words of the darker creatures of this place. "As for getting you out of the creek, I believe I that my enthusiasm will more than suffice when it is time." He fixed her with that grin as a hand found itself slipping low on her back.

Shai stepped into his hand just as a chuckle tumbled. "Oui, and perhaps not before you called everyone within Belglade to come and see the sights of such enthusiasm." In truth, while there was always a light humor between them, they had faced their monsters and the darker things head on, while coming out on the other side intact...mostly. And while she didn't speak on it often, not a day went by that Shai did not wonder how deep his wounds were hidden, while still dealing with his own demons. A thumbs pass beneath his eye, she refilled his glass and set the pitcher on the small table there. "It concerns me at times, the work you take."?

He eyes closed at her touch. His lips found her ear to whisper lightly.? "I believe most of Belglade has learned that my enthusiasm is something to keep their distance from, or to at least reign in the children." There was no darkness that he couldn't be reached through by that light caress. "I don't know what else I can do Shai. It is within me whether I want it or not, and there are times I feel both. I need an apprentice, I need a skilled smith. Ravenlock was generous in his gift but I am just one man. How do I keep two forges going? Three if you count here." The moment ended with a beginning to the stroll towards the creek.

Slipping her hand into the crook of his arm, Shai fell quiet while she breathed in the scent of him. His scent had become part of her DNA. She could not ever get enough of it, or him.

Pondering on his words, she was careful in her footing and it was as the trees hung lower and thicker, she began to tense as she always did and avoided looking towards the further tree line where it became so thick, it could not be seen through. Her tone dipping to that of an almost whisper. "If there was perfection, what would you like to see happen to lessen your load and to know things are running smoothly at all 3 locations?"?

If all were perfect, that was an interesting thing to think on. "The biggest problem I have is finding people who can do as I do. That would be perfect, though I still would have issues trusting. I would be like the interfering master to them, but I suppose trust comes with time." His arm slid so that his hand was on her hip in that all to familiar place. "There is just so much that can go wrong in the forge. Perfect would be for those better than I to come along and rent to them."

"You will spend an eternity waiting for one who is better than you, Kruger. It is simply a task that would not bear fruit. Have you thought of taking Geo or one of the others into an apprenticeship until your son is of an age that he can work beneath your elbow?" It was no secret that Shai was convinced the child was a male. It was a simple fact and none could tell her different.

Along with that, came the knowledge that upon birth, it would be known he held certain "abilities", much akin to his father. Then and only then would she take a breath and know the worst was over. It would be in the child's eyes, right into his core. Removing her hand, Shai leaned down onto one of the large rocks that made its home at the waters edge. "Finding the like of you, will be a daunting task, mon amour."?

He'd had this discussion before, with her and others. It took effort to not let himself be caught up by those words. It was as though he was afraid that claiming such a title would change him. "I could bring them in, but to teach it to one of Gio's age is simply to show him, I could never put it so deeply into the man that it was a part of him. Just as he could only ever show me what he does. His sons would be harder to teach but in the end they would understand the work better. They are his though and how can I take what should be his apprentice?" He remained next to her something to reach for when if she needed to. "I am not sure that our daughter will wish to be a smith, though she could if that were her choice."

"It is something that definitely needs to be considered and thought on greatly." That was for certain. "Or perhaps only certain months you take work and spread it out, so you are not overwhelmed. While you may lose some business, it is also well known your skill and some may just wait." A trace of touch moved across the top of his hand and rested a moment. "Some weeks, you work yourself into the very ground you stand upon, and while it brings you great joy..it at times, brings you a tremendous unsettling that consumes you.."?

He nodded at that last, it would be a lie to say he didn't feel it drag him to places he would have to struggle against. "Sometimes I get to philosophical in my musings. I know that I am not responsible for how my wares are used, and still I know what they are made for." He knelt low to pull boots off and lay them out of the reach of the water. "But how do I not carry a burden when you are forced to bear one with you every day?" He put a palm on her swollen abdomen, then lean in to place a kiss up that place.

There were moments when the Blacksmith staggered the Courtesan. Literally. This was one of those times and her breath hitched just enough to perhaps be heard by him. Into his hair her fingers roamed and her lips twittered at the feel of life moving around in that stretched belly of her's. Many many times, the child reacted to his father's voice. Sometimes it was slight, other times it was clearly obvious and the inkling of an elbow or a foot could clearly be made out along her flesh.

Her words chosen so very carefully, she wished to not be misunderstood. Her tear filled gaze catching his, the lump in her throat near enormous as it tried to cut her off several times. "This child, could never be thought of as a burden. He is a blessing that I am grateful for, everyday that passes in which I am closer to knowing he will survive. With every flutter he makes, it takes my breath away. For every response he has,
I am grateful." She had finally found her peace in the happenstance of his conception.

She knew in her soul, this child was HIS. But in his words, Shai knew even he had doubts. "Please, mon amour....have faith in this....I beg of you...." While the conversation had shifted somewhat, it needed to be said. The turning of the tides had left her as the rock for now. She often wondered if this was why he worked so much, only coming to bed when he was sure she was asleep. Smoothing her fingers through his hair, time and time again. "Never a burden....but a gift...to us both."?

He smiled softer for Shai, calloused fingers tracing circles along her belly moved to her face. "I know the gift is ours. Evil can be found everywhere but within you. Sometimes I scour it from my skin, but that doesn't touch you. I won't let it." He leaned in to gently kiss her eyes until his lips felt the saltiness that was there.

"You are mine, both of you." He worked any failure in his resolve out with the heavy hammer and a force of his will. His heart never wavered though. Kruger pulled back from her gaze fiercely possessive, and something more behind those wheat colored eyes. "You are a gift, your child a blessing. Everything else is an attempt to sway me."

Always tangled they were, like some fierce set of dragons, dancing in the heavens. Surely no beginning and clearly no end. Trial after trial, tribulation at it's finest. But they always came out on top of it, somehow.

Leaning down, she kissed him gently....sort of. "If it takes the rest of my days, to prove what a gift you are to me, to our child and anyone who is blessed enough to come within your presence, I will depart happily and at peace. With your peace,I can accomplish that." And then smiled....one of those glinting ones in an attempt to splice some humor into their conversation. "And anything that attempts to sway you, will cross paths with me and be brought back down to
size..." That sounded odd, coming from her.

He slid closer at her not so gentle kiss, wanting to feel the weight of her on his lap. His hands went to her hips and encouraged her to come closer. "I know from experience that you are far to formidable to be ignored...mon amour."

Sliding slowly down from her perch, this was harder than it should have been. Finally settled within his lap, an arm draped across his shoulders and she snuggled in. "I have to tell you something, mon amour..."?
