"How did you end up in this situation?" Saelbain inquired curiously. "So far I can not even imagine what could change you so much - from a simple human into _this_"

"Oh, Sael, it's a long story, and I doubt you have time."

"You know that time is unimportant for both of us. Go on."

(places, names, some concepts - big thanks to Master of Orion games! )

Even gravity of Mentar was different from what she was used to. Lehroulinn seemed much more comfortable in the weird surroundings. He said he somehow managed to contact one of locals. The noises of highly technological megapolis were maddening... Odd vehicles in the air, strange light, strange scents... They walked, or stood on moving ribbon-like roadways, or entered strange portals that didn't even smell magic...

"Almost there," the voice of her shalafi was no consolation. Cultural shock was a common occurence for those coming from magical worlds into realms of technology, this she knew for sure. Finally, they arrived at the entrance (if a column of transparent cold fire could be called this) to the dwelling of local Lehroulinn has contacted.

The Psilon looked as odd as his world did. He was skinny, with huge bulging eyes, delicate long fingers that resembled (to her frustrated mind) spider's legs. However there was type of elegance in his look, common for any being that evolved. He fit in perfectly in his surroundings. Dark eyes regarded them carefully.
"So thisss is the student you've promised, colleague? doensn't look too intellectually developed, but I will rely on your judgement," the disdain in his voice was almost palpable. "She will get her chance, and access to necessary data."

Anger rose in her, but asmodean lessons of self-control were well-learned. "I will try and disappoint you, alien. You will not see me fail"

In three months she started her studies in the Planetary University of Mentar, easily passing the entry exams in molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics.

It was fascinating. Unlike most local students, she had no qualms about experimenting on herself when she was confident in the results of her experiment. Unlike even Psilons, she was not bound by previously learned concepts, and took every statement with a certain share of critical analysis. A part of her realized that she was being used as a pawn in a game played by Lehroulinn, but could this matter much? Rhaine trusted her Teacher, and so far he has given her no reason to doubt. The pleasure of intellectual growth, of absorbing new knowledge, was more than one could handle.

At times she did think about Clandestine, about a lover she left there, but these images have become hazed. Life in Clandestine seemed like a funny story. Other students considered her an over-achiever, an arrogant nerd, or a dozen of other odd names she hardly bothered to listen to. The Psilon and Ellerian professors considered her an oddly successful human student (and the contrast with others was too obvious). However there was a truth they probably could not believe. Magic, vampires - all this was strange for a technologically oriented world.

With her rate of absorbing knowledge, it took only three years to get through six-year program. Biological science added to her knowledge and skill of a life mage... this was a promising combination

Before they left for Fieras, Lehroulinn initiated her. One last Kiss - and the world changed. Vampire life mage - that was certainly ironic. At least he did explain why, and his pragmatism was one thing Rhaine respected. Being a vampire rendered her resistant to many hazards they were likely to encounter on Fieras.

The feline race of Fieras was hardly aggressive to two strangers that arrived in Fier-Voln spaceport. In the end, relations with the Psilons were excellent, and they arrived on a regular ship between capital planets of two races. It was easy to obtain passage to one of their "nature preserves" - a mountaneous area in a day's drive to the north.

The large city wasn't too friendly to strangers, but there are very few things two vampires can't handle, especially when there's no problem with redirecting someone to a hospital (with several fractures and concussion) instead of killing off. Finally they rented a grav platform and left, tired of noisy, boring megapolis.

Ruins of some ancient temple were a worthy decoration of purplish greenery of the valley. The air over the ruins shimmered. The felpur that emerged from this shimmer, looked at them calmly. "Finally, Lehroulinn. Your and your student's training was taking forever".

His name was Darquan.
