But, if around my place of sleep,
The friends I love should come to weep,
They might not haste to go.
Soft airs, and song, and light, and bloom,
Should keep them, lingering by my tomb.

-William Bryant

A shimmering vertical line appeared in the crisp morning air upon the lawn where Jewell?s villa once stood. It split into two halves and spread outward, forming a perfect oval, the depths of which shone into some extraordinary technicolor dreamscape with streaking silver lines on a dark blue backdrop. Two well-dressed young men stepped out of the opening, fresh-faced and bright-eyed, accompanied by two exotic beasts.

The first young man was lean and carried himself with a regal poise. Armed with a glowing sword at his hip, he had long pretty shiny black hair that hung to his shoulders. So electric blue were his eyes they looked as if stars had exploded inside of them. He wore the fantastical futuristic armor of a warrior-prince, with spiked shoulder plates pulsing with purple light and chainmail chest armor that winked in the morning sun like a sheet of diamonds. A majestic blue and gold cape hung down his back. At his heels followed a massive armored wolf, a beast as big as a horse with sharp fangs that glistened with saliva.

The second person who emerged wore the long intricate robes of a battlemage, adorned with various magical enhancements like bejeweled wizard bracers that amplified and channeled fire spells. On his back he carried a long staff with glowing red orbs on both ends. A vicious, snapping raptor appeared behind him, armored and saddled like the wolf.

Behind them, the gateway, a hole in reality?s fabric, winked out of existence.

?How did I do, Gasher?? the first young man asked.

?Not bad, Sky. You?re learning magic at a decent rate for someone who picked it up so late in life.?

?Just keep teaching me. I need to know more.? Skyler turned around and scanned his surroundings, frowning at the pile of burnt rubble that formed a black scar in the middle of a grassy landscape. ?Something?s wrong, Gasher. I must have opened the gateway in the wrong spot. This isn?t her ?? He trailed off when he realized the stable and the fountain out front were the very same from his memory.

?No, this is the place,? Gasher said. ?I recognize it.?

?Strange,? Skyler said. ?This place had magical wards and other security measures. Wonder how it managed to burn down. C?mon, let?s find Jewell. She?s probably renting a room at the Inn now. I bet she?s pissed about losing her house. She?s not fond of fire.?

?No, she isn?t,? Gasher said, knowingly.

Skyler put two fingers in his mouth and whistled shrilly. ?Ghost, to me!? The gigantic wolf had gone to paw and sniff the charred rubble, but now it sprang in Skyler?s direction. He climbed into the saddle and clutched the reins. Gasher mounted his raptor and the two of them galloped to the main road.

A horse-drawn carriage was winding its way toward them. Skyler stopped Ghost in the carriage?s path and put out his hand, signaling for the driver to halt. The driver pulled to a frantic stop and held his hands in the air, fearful of being robbed. His horse whinnied and reared at the sight of Ghost and the raptor. Ghost growled at it.

?What happened to the Ravenlock estate?? Skyler demanded.

?B,b,burned down, a few months back!?

?No shit, idiot!? Skyler snorted in annoyance. ?How did it happen? Where is the family ? Jewell Ravenlock and her children??

The driver gaped at Skyler, his mouth working.

A terrible pounding alarm began to sound deep in the young man?s heart. The driver had bad news and was afraid to tell it. ?Out with it or I?ll let your guts out right here in the dirt!?

?Well, no one?s certain how it happened. The authorities suspect foul play. But ? they died in that fire, my lord. All eight of them.?

Skyler smirked and huffed in disbelief. ?What a stupid liar you are, man. Jewell Ravenlock couldn?t die in some silly house fire. C?mon, Gasher, let?s go.? Gasher kicked the raptor into a gallop and Skyler did the same. Side by side they streaked across the countryside en route to the city proper.

Skyler called out over the rushing wind and patter of paws and claws in the dirt. ?Do you believe this crap? If Jewell?s not around anymore I guarantee you it?s because she wants it that way, not because her house burned down and she was too stupid to make it to the window or a front door!? His long black hair and blue gold cape streamed out behind him as he rode.

?It?s very interesting,? Gasher admitted.

Upon arriving at the edge of town they slowed their mounts to a walk. Skyler said softly, ?Tell me again, Gasher. Tell another story of me and her together before Tommy killed me.?

?I thought you read the diary and you were able to remember?? Gasher said.

?Not everything, not every story. Just tell me another one.?

The fire mage considered for a moment, searching his memory for a suitable tale. He spoke softly and affectionately, like an older brother telling his sibling a bedtime story. ?Well, it was back when the gang was all together at Cosmo Beach. You two were always together back then, spending almost every night at either her place or ours. You guys went for a walk on the beach one night, then wandered back to the house clinging all over each other and whispering secretively, dripping wet from swimming in the ocean. You were so gaga over each other you didn?t even notice me as you passed me on your way inside. I heard you splashing around in the jacuzzi for a little while, then you went into your room and got very quiet. Unable to help myself, I crept up the deck stairs and peered into your bedroom through the open windows. In the dim light within, I saw you two laying there. Neither of you wore a stitch of clothing; you were utterly entwined and tangled up with each other. Your faces were inches apart, and you seemed to be whispering back and forth.?

?Then what happened?? Skyler prompted.

?I dunno. I walked away and went to bed down in the basement.?

Skyler kept his eyes on the far horizon, wearing a distant and dreamy expression as Ghost led them through town. ?Did I really love her? Do you think I really did? I?ve never loved anyone in my conscious memory. I don?t feel capable of it.?

?You did. It was evident in your words and your actions, in the way you looked at her. And she loved you back. You should have seen her when you died. She was so... so emotional.?

?All the good ones are, so I?m told,? Skyler said.

Gasher gave him a considering glance. ?When we get back you should expel all your concubines and select one of your Lords? daughters for courtship. A spoiled, mouthy, stubborn girl who?s used to getting her way will be much more challenging, engaging, and fun to court. Perhaps you can develop love for a woman again. You?ll never feel it for a sex servant.?

Skyler smirked. ?Since when did you become the love expert?? He thought about it a moment, then said, ?Perhaps when the war is over. Falling in love now could dull my fighting spirit, and I need it a while longer.? Sobering thoughts of the war came crowding into his mind and he quickly put the notion aside.

They came to a square where four streets intersected. Passersby gasped and lunged aside at the sight of the massive wolf and raptor plodding down the way. The mounts for the most part were well-behaved. They were deadly, trained battle mounts, but they knew the difference between a field of war and a docile town. However, if Ghost were to become too hungry?

On a pedestal at one end of the square stood a fat town crier, bellowing the daily news to a gathering of townsfolk. The gathering dispersed as the young man with a glowing sword approached on the back of a wolf. Skyler dismounted and stomped straight toward the crier, climbing the pedestal to look him in the eye. He pressed a gold coin into the fat man?s hand. ?Tell me the whereabouts of Jewell Ravenlock and her children. I understand their home burned down two months back.?

The crier gave Skyler a consoling look. ?My lord, has no one told you? Ms. Ravenlock and all of her children died in that fire. It was the evening of December seventeenth. Such a tragic thing. I?m terribly sorry to be the one to tell you. They now rest peacefully at Rhydin Memorial Cemetery. A large monument of a Celtic cross has been erected in their honor.?

Skyler deflated, his shoulders hunching, chin dropping, a look of helpless sadness spreading over his face. ?This can?t be,? he muttered. ?It?s impossible.? He stepped down from the pedestal and put a limp hand on the pommel of Ghost?s saddle.

?There is more here than what we?re being told,? Gasher said. ?She had a powerful command of water magic. I saw it first hand. She could have quenched those flames with a thought, or escaped them at the very least.?

?This is bull shit. This is a bunch of bull shit!? Anger shoving aside his sadness, Skyler kicked out at the closest thing he could find, a rusty tin can. It flew onto the front porch of a nearby shop with a clamor. ?Let?s go see this false memorial!? He swung onto Ghost?s saddle and kicked the beast into a full run. In single file he and Gasher tore through city streets, winding their way to the cemetery.

A cold winter breeze battered Skyler?s face as he spurred Ghost through busy streets and crowded markets. Soon the city fell behind them and the two young men burst through the cemetery?s open gates. Skyler recognized the area as the place he buried Sonia during a misty night many months ago. Ghost galloped along the paths until the monument the crier had described appeared, whereupon Skyler jerked the reins and hastily dismounted. He approached the Celtic cross, his blue gold cape and long black hair stirring in the breeze.

Seeing the monument truly made the possibility of her death seem plausible, at least for a moment. Rage boiled inside him. ?How could you allow this to happen?" He shouted at the memorial as if it were Jewell herself. "All your deep power, and you let your life and the lives of your precious children be claimed by a mundane house fire! How dare you?? Skyler clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. ?I had more to say, Jewell. I had more to tell you. Important things!? He stepped closer to the cross. ?You weren?t supposed to die!? He stood emotionally naked in the morning light, hissing through gritted teeth, chest heaving. ?Jewell, our last words in this world were not kind. I wronged you. I had always intended to make amends and seek forgiveness.? He closed his eyes. Teardrops squeezed out and streaked down his cheeks.

?Skyler,? Gasher said from what seemed like a world away, ?someone?s coming.?

?I know. I feel them,? he murmured.

Suddenly a massive gateway spread open behind them, long enough for twelve soldiers to step through standing abreast. Men in the prime of their days, they were tall, tan, and muscular. Their armor was glimmering titanium, silvery and stronger than steel, but much lighter in weight. Each carried a spear that glowed faintly with a magical enchantment. A radiant female in spotless white robes and holding a metallic staff stood before the group. Her face was beautiful and ageless, but tainted with a wounded expression. It was Adora: sage, sorceress, gifted military strategist, and one of Skyler?s least favorite advisors. They butted heads on everything from strategy of war to his sleeping and drinking habits.

Adora addressed him sternly, but in a hurt tone. ?Your Grace, why would you leave the campaign, the country, and even the planet without your Honor Guard? Have we failed you in some way??

Skyler turned and faced them. Ignoring the woman, he passed his gaze over the twelve soldiers. The gateway still yawned behind them, viewing out over some bizarre polychromatic landscape littered with thousands of warriors and beasts and weapons of war.

?Men,? Skyler announced, projecting his voice, ?I?m sorry to leave you without warning. I intended to return before you realized I was gone. This excursion was a personal matter and I felt it improper to ask you to come.?

They stared back at Skyler with emotionless eyes, obviously not caring why he had temporarily abandoned them. Their only concern, he knew, was finding him and resuming their permanent vigil. A silly notion, that. The only reason he had risen to his place of prominence among them was his immortality, and what use did an immortal have for bodyguards? Still, they were dedicated, passionate men and they devoted their lives to his service. He had unending respect for them, and he would explain his departure.

?I once lived in this land you see here now, some time ago, before I knew who and what I was. I met some great people here, like my advisor Gasher that you all know well. It was here, once upon I time, where I met a bartender in an inn ? and I fell in love with her. She was always beside me, whenever someone tried to fight me. She was there when I was down. She always had my back. She lived passionately and she loved fiercely. She burned like the sun. When you walked into a room, your eyes always drifted to her??

He paused, shifting his attention to the woman. ?Adora, her name was Jewell. The last time I saw her I wronged her badly. I came here to make amends, to apologize, but now she is gone.? He nodded over his shoulder at the tall cross.

Adora glanced at the cross and looked back at Skyler with a small bit of concern, but her heart wasn?t softened by his sentimentality. ?Your Grace, if you?ve forgotten, we?re in the middle of a war. General Zelgius has broken through the outer perimeter and sacked Netherwind Keep. The men need you. They need their Immortal back on the front lines. You give them hope and courage.?

?What?? Skyler looked through the open gateway in disbelief. ?We reinforced Netherwind three days ago. I sent half a legion there?? This news nearly succeeded in tearing his attention away from the matter of Jewell. Netherwind was a staging area for their next foray. If Zelgius had seized it, he not only would have killed up to three thousand of Skyler?s soldiers, but procured valuable supplies and resources.

Remembering the looming cross beside him, he returned his eyes to Adora. ?I will return the war with haste, but I must do something first.?

?And that is??

He took a deep breath, knowing he would have to fight her on this. Skyler stepped close to her. She was tall for a woman and her gaze was level with his. He spoke in low, clipped, heated tones that emphasized the urgency of his order. ?You will give me the authority to walk backwards through time.?

Adora lurched back from him, her face distorting in abhorrence. ?No, your Grace! Such a thing cannot be done on a whim, or without months of careful planning.?

Skyler glared at her heatedly. ?It?s not a request. It?s an order. I?d do it myself if I could, but I haven?t learned enough magic yet. Don?t worry; it shouldn?t be as complex as you think. I only need to go back two months, not decades.?

?Your grace, walking backwards through time should only be attempted by a skilled magic user and astronomer. You must understand star charts and complex arcane flows or you might never find your way there and back. You may be immortal, but you can?t help your people if you?re lost in the cosmos for all eternity!? She clenched her staff tightly, holding it before her as if she thought she might have to defend herself with it.

Skyler wouldn?t be swayed. ?You will obey my order. Form a clean, solid gateway, the most powerful you?ve ever attempted. Keep a strand on me the whole time. See to it that I can find my way back. I refuse to return to the war until this is done.?

Adora let out a soft, defeated sigh.

Skyler raised his voice for everyone at the grave site to hear. ?I?ve devoted myself fully to our cause back home. I?ve spent the last year fighting hordes, laying siege to castles, and studying your magic and your strategies of war. I?ve done it because I?m passionate about our cause. Never have I made a personal request until now. I need to put something in my past to rest before I can truly commit myself to finishing this war.? Skyler called for Ghost. The wolf was at his side in a heartbeat and the young man mounted. ?Now, Adora! Do it!?

With a grave expression, the white sorceress closed her eyes. Clutching her staff with both hands she stretched out her arms. Loud popping and tearing noises filled the air as a roiling ball of light formed before Jewell?s monument. ?What time and place?? she shouted.

?Seventy-five days ago! A villa north east from here, by the sea, with a large green lawn, stables, and a fountain out front!? He backed Ghost about twenty yards away from the forming portal, preparing for a running start.

A sudden swirling wind descended upon the cemetery, rippling so fiercely through Adora?s robe it was a wonder the garment didn?t tear off and flutter away. Skyler?s long black hair whipped about wildly, lashing his face and neck. He gripped Ghost?s reins with both hands and focused on the portal. Glancing at Gasher he shouted, ?Don?t worry, I?ll make it back. When I return, you?ll teach me more of your magic and we?ll pyroblast Zelgius? hordes into oblivion!?

Gasher nodded nervously. ?Be careful, Skyler. You can?t tarry long in there. If she loses the thread, you?ll be lost in time.?

The cemetery blazed with popping white lights as Adora?s arcane flows tore into reality?s fabric violently enough to open a gateway that would carry Skyler backwards through time. Finally the sorceress was ready. She shrieked to be heard. ?NOW!?

Suddenly Skyler?s Honor Guard began pounding the butts of their spears on the ground. They chanted his battle cry in a rhythmic baritone chorus. ?HARRR HUUUN! HARRR HUUUN! CARRY WITH YOU THE THUNDEROUS STRENGTH OF THE STORM!?

Skyler drove his heels into the wolf?s flanks. Clinging tightly to the reins, he bent low over Ghost?s back as the massive beast charged across the grass and leapt fearlessly into the portal.

He found himself still mounted upon the galloping Ghost, but his surroundings were infinitely different. Gone was the scenic civilized countryside, replaced by an endless black void shining with a billion points of light. A bright glittering sphere surrounded Skyler and his wolf, carrying them at unimaginable speed, giving them trajectory and force, providing Ghost?s paws a strand of light to run upon. The stars, ever stationary from the view of a planet, now streamed by so fast they blurred and streaked across the black backdrop of the universe. Nebulas, quasars, supernovas: all the wonders of space flashed by amidst an extravagant stream of stars. Finally, as a small blue planet appeared ahead, their pace began to slow.

Seventy-five days earlier?

High above Rhydin, a silvery-white comet blazed across the starry night. Tiny at first, it grew increasingly larger to anyone who might have been watching it. This comet wasn?t simply passing by the planet ? it was aimed at the planet. Steadily and surely, it bore down ever closer to a certain villa.

Upon the villa?s lawn, a solitary female form gazed up at the comet in wonder. With each passing moment, her wonder gave way to apprehension and curiosity.

He measured his descent by the view of the house, the same house he rudely broke into many months beforehand. Plenty of lights shone within, becoming brighter the closer he drew to the planet?s surface. When he was less than five hundred feet above the ground, the comet?s immensely bright light illuminated the entire house and yard, casting it into an aesthetic silvery fantasy scene.

Ghost?s paws landed lightly on the surface of the lawn. His keen wolf eyes, glowing yellow, spotted the object of their search right away. Skyler followed Ghost?s stare? and then he saw her. She had backed up against the side of the house, trying not to be seen, gaping at him in awestruck wonder. I feel you. It?s not every day you see a guy on a wolf land on your lawn in a comet, he thought.

Skyler urged Ghost forward. The sphere that held them refused to dissipate, and it caused his and Ghost?s bodies to sparkle like a string of pearls in a moonbeam. Skyler especially so; with his glowing armor, sword, and regal cape, he looked like an angel crossed with a knight.

He stepped off Ghost?s back and approached the faerie. ?Don?t be afraid, Jewell. It?s me, Skyler, if you don?t recognize me. I?ve been away in a faraway land, putting this damned immortality to good use. I was adopted by an oppressed nation, and I?m helping them take back their freedom.? He looked into her gray eyes and took a mental picture, then descended to one knee. ?This is the last time I?ll ever see you.? Skyler reached out with glowing hands, clasped her own hand, and held it gently against his cheek. ?I?m so sorry for how I treated you before. I sinned against you grievously and I deeply regret it. Please, find it in your heart to forgive me.?

He let a long, sincere moment pass, relishing the touch of her hand against his face. It was a touch he would never know again. Finally he stood, not taking his sad eyes from hers. ?I know you could never die, but where ever you go, whatever happens next, I wish you happiness. Please don?t forget me, or any others whose lives you touched here. It was much more than just a fairytale.?

The sphere of light around him suddenly blinked and hissed. The sorceress was losing her strength. His time was short.

Skyler gave Jewell a regretful, longing look. He leaned forward, kissed her cheek with gleaming lips, then backed away and leapt onto Ghost?s back. Instantly the wolf and the warrior-prince were drawn up into the stratosphere with all the jerking quickness of a fish with a hook through its gills. The comet streaked across the sky and vanished.

Present day

Some indeterminable measure of time later, Ghost burst from the portal into present day Rhydin. Adora slumped onto her side as the man-sized orb she had been channeling dissolved. The twelve Honor Guards went to see to her. The woman was sobbing softly and she was too weak to move, but otherwise seemed okay.

Skyler dismounted and found himself before the Celtic cross once again. Gasher quickly moved to his side. ?Did you find her??

?Yes,? he whispered. ?I said what I had to say.?

?She?s not dead, Skyler. Don?t believe it.?

Skyler couldn?t take his eyes from the monument. Ghost had begun to pace around it, sniffing at the ground and licking the granite of the cross. ?No, Gasher, I don?t think I will believe it. However, I do believe she may be gone forever. Though I will never accept her death, I may indeed have to accept that.?

Saying the words finalized the sentiment in Skyler?s heart. He looked at his wolf, then lifted his eyes to the huge Celtic cross which seemed to glare back at him, mocking his damnation. A colossal swell of emotion burst inside of him. He threw back his head and let out a haunted, visceral, demoralized shriek of frustration that pierced the idyllic cemetery like a roaring cannonball. The Honor Guard came to him immediately and took their ceremonial places around him, six men at either side, fanning out diagonally like a flock of birds with the warrior-prince at the apex. While Skyler stood and yelled, the sound of his cry growing ever-louder, they all dropped to one knee and bowed reverently before the cross. Ghost, able to feel his master?s misery, curved his long body around the cross, arched his back, lifted his head to the sky and added a yearning wolf?s howl to Skyler?s scream. The vocalized agony of master and beast filled the countryside.
