Resolution was reached. It wasn?t a dramatic scene where they clung to each other until the very last second when one tore from the other?s arms and ran away crying. Nor was it the messy breakup, so popular with younger ones, with screaming and shouting. It was acceptance of the situation with tears, apologies, a parting kiss, and encouraging words. They did not go their separate way as strangers, resentful lovers, or best of friends. They parted as family.

Despite the excuses of business to attend to, Jewell did not leave the Inn and go to her housing contractor?s office. With tearstains still fresh on her cheeks she meandered towards a spot she knew and adored in the woods. Water ran through a little glade, running over a series of rocks in a delightful fall. Ferns lined the ground, hiding her form as she settled down on moss-cushioned rocks besides the brook. She could hide here, dipping her fingers into the cool water now and again, and reflect. Reflection was needed before she could go on, do anything, but think about their exchange.

Despite her appearance-laughter, smiles, nonchalant chatter-this was not easy for Jewell. Yes, she had resolved herself to this over the last few weeks, months, perhaps even years. They could not go on the way they had for so long, it was unhealthy no matter how strong their love was. Yet, to see him there before her and to tell him these things was so very different from thinking them, believing in them, in her heart and mind. He cried, she cried. She held onto him because he had always been her rock until she had become determined to stand on her own, she needed that strength once more. She was sure he did as well.

She was already moving on; content in the new life she was forming for herself and with the companion she chose. She insisted that he could move on as well, told him to do so. She let him take that one last kiss, not for old time?s sake but because she still cared for him, loved him. This was her husband, her companion of so many years, her soul mate.

Perhaps no one understood how, if she loved him so very much, she could move on. It was clear-cut for Jewell- she just did it. She gave her love, heart and soul, to him and did not take it back. She did not regret it. She could move on, love another or several others, and still love him as well. Each person she loved was different, loved in different ways and for different reasons but all forever cherished in her Empress heart.
