Final Clash (Director's Commentary)

It's a shame I won't get to write out every fight like I wanted to, but as with some things, you can and will lose interest. Oh well. C'est la vie. This idea came up a while ago when I thought I'd count how many characters I had and interacted with that it would be okay to throw together for something -- enough cool characters anyway. The number got quite high by my standards. This was initially meant to be a fun, coin toss, heads: you lose tails: you win type of fighting tournament, and I wanted to write it to see how far I could get it. It didn't get as far as I would have liked. I wanted to at least do two rounds, and I had it planned where between rounds the tournament fighters would get beamed back down to the planet and holiday for a couple of months until the next round. Particularly the second round I wanted to write everyone and their thoughts on what they had done and pondering about what would happen next with them.

I always thought of the 'Dial M for Monkey' episode with Randy Savage (God rest his soul) when I came up with this tournament. A planet's greatest fighters get summoned to a spaceship to fight. If you ever wondered what the Promenade of Stars might have looked like, there you go right there. It was an overall fun thing to do and fun to write, and the Gloria enim story (my favorite story I've written) is a loosely-based continuation of it. I'm enjoying writing that story and it has quite the way's to go still before I'm done with it, but this one had to end, and it deserved some closure. What I had started doing very early on was using the DoS simulator to decide the rounds, and I'd pick whoever I thought I'd like to represent and the opponent would be the computer. I ranked both to warlord and started deciding matches. Most of the time it was an easy win, and some of the time upsets occurred.

It's neat looking at the wrapsheet now, though. Some of them would make really fun write-ups. I would have loved to have seen Corea take the whole thing. She gained notice in the first round by beating one of my greatest villains. She continued this streak by beating Kit (who I wanted to win, because he's just such a great new character), Searcher (another new character I think is just really cool), and Declan (who I would have loved to face Al in the final). I imagine many, many many bullets flying in all of her matches.

Some of these stages were just downright awesome, and you might need to know a little about our mythos over here to appreciate them.

Was from a very specific moment in time when Kamonbak was enlarged many times his normal size by Techichi during her Guardian Trials. It's also interesting that an possessed inanimate object made it to the semifinals.

Adenna Arcade or Kurgan Arcade Room could have easily been an homage to one of my favorite fighting stages in Capcom vs SNK that is half arcade/half sidewalk.

The Bone Well stage was from a Halloween story I wrote last year which was full of musical living skeletons.

Otomo's store as well would have been another wonderful place to describe in more detail. Quite a large number of these stages would have been a delight to write out, actually. But they'll have to remain in my head.

It was a treat working on this for the time that I did. Thanks if anyone ever looked into it.
