Left on Cassie's doorstep was a sterling silver necklace with four turquoise stones. (seen here) http://comanchemall.com/library/TQNecklace.jpg

One look at the necklace would leave absolutely no doubt as to who the necklace came from. There weren't a whole lot of folks around here who were in possession of Native American jewelry.

Laying underneath the necklace was a scribbled note. The words were barely legible, but a bit of a closer look should be enough to be able to decipher them.

"Cassie,

Just wanted to wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy late birthday.

Dakota"

Damn right he remembered it was her birthday just a few days ago.

That's what friends do.

He hadn't seen her or spoken with her in so long. He'd been too busy trying to hold marriages together.

He was tired of giving a damn about how certain actions might look in the eyes of other people. If this pissed Alain off, then it pissed Alain off.

Dakota simply wanted to give a gift to an old friend that he cared deeply about.

Cassie was heading out to go for a run when she opened the door and came across the necklace. She knelt down with a "huh" and picked it up, fingers dancing over the stones before she picked up the note beneath and read it.

"That was nice."

With a smile she stood and stepped back inside, setting the necklace down carefully on a table near the door, placing the note beside it for when she returned. Then she left to complete her run.
