The lake was smooth as glass and equally as reflective. Bastian sat there on the grass by the waters edge; thinking. Thinking about a lot of things, actually.
He?d gotten up early, a time he knew Erin wouldn?t be up, and decided to go visit home. He stopped at home to greet his mother, let her know everything was ok, and that, no, he wasn?t moving back home. He played checkers with the girls, who had both stayed home from school at the insistence of their mother, because they were sick with colds. He played with his dog, went for a walk, and ended up at the university. It was here that he left a message for his brother Jonathan to come see him by the lake when his classes were finished.
And now he waited.
Oh, how his life had change in these past few weeks. It was almost surreal. He?d gone from a life of luxury to becoming a working-class man. And it was certainly taking it?s toll. Sebastian de Vernon was under so much stress lately that he didn?t know what to do with himself. Between sifting through mixed emotions towards Truly, dealing with the culture shock, trying to fit in at work and then the problems with Erin, Sebastian was at his wits end. He could feel the anger well up inside of him at the strangest times. It made him want to hurt something; someone. But that would only make things worse.
He wanted to be there for Erin, he really did. He wanted to be the one she could confide in. He wanted to be everything she needed him to be. He wanted to be needed. He also wanted Erin to be all those things for him?but right now, that was out of the question. She didn?t need him unloading his problems and frustrations out on her.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footfalls approaching. He turned and smiled, finding his brother walking towards him. The 19 year old was the spitting image of Bastian at that age. They were so much alike that they?ve been mistaken for twins before. The younger version of himself grinned down at Bastian; hands in his pockets, just like he always stood.
?I almost didn?t believe them when they told me you were here.?
Bastian gave a lopsided grin and rubbed at the back of his neck. ?Yeah, I guess it?s a bit of a surprise for me to be back so soon.?
?I didn?t think you?d come back at all.?
?Why not? You?re my family?I wouldn?t abandon you.?
?That?s how mom feels.?
Bastian sighed and hung his head. He didn?t need more guilt or drama.
?Come on, brother. Let?s walk and talk. Looks like you?ve got a lot on your mind.?
?Thanks, Jon. I knew you wouldn?t mind me rambling on and on mindlessly.?
?What?re brothers for, eh??
