Millie

The numbers were high for a Thursday night at the cocktail lounge, but not quite touching the usual weekend crowd. Which?was fine by Millie. If she had her way, she wouldn?t be out at all. Hell, she wasn?t sure why she was doing her brother any favors anyways. If it wasn?t for the hopelessness of Malcolm?s assistant, she probably would?ve told him to go shove it. ?but it wasn?t the case, so there she was.
?and oddly enough, she was having a good time. Ada was a funny drunk, and she?d never seen the girl cut loose before. Ada had drunk about five Whiskey Sours, while Millie had her own concoction of blood and booze.

?So?what?s going on with Micah? What?s his story?? Ada asked, her face resting on her palm as she leaned and took a sip of her drink.

?Pretty sure he likes Eva,? Millie said, almost defensively. What? If anyone was going to marry Micah and be her sister, it would be her bestie! ?Besides, you?ve been talking about Malcolm all night. I think it?s pretty clear what brother you?re interested in.?

Ada immediately went on the defensive, lifting up, and shaking her head. ?No, of course I don?t think of Malcolm that way, he?s my boss?he?s my??? It was hopeless, and even she knew it by the look on Millie?s face. ??Please don?t tell??

Millie shook her head, ?I haven?t spilled the beans yet,? she snickered. ?Don?t plan on it, but?? Downing the rest of her drink, she shook her head lightly and crinkled her nose. ??you ever think maybe?just tell him how you feel??

?Right,? Ada laughed. ?Tell Mr. Playboy how I feel? I could see that going so well.?

There was a wince, ?Yeah? Thinking about it, that?s a stupid idea,? she laughed weakly. ?I dunno, dude? I mean, he clearly can?t live without you? I seriously think he?d fall apart and lose all of his money in a week.?

?Nah, he did just fine without me? I can?t imagine much would change if I left.?

Millie leaned in, ??so leave.?

?What?? Ada blinked.

?Look, I don?t want to tell you how to live your life? Or anything like that, but? All I know is? If I loved somebody, and had to spend every waking moment with them, watching them go through woman?after woman?after woman?after??

?I get it.?

A small laugh, ?Right, sorry?the point is, I?d go crazy? And, you have to have a savings at this point. What have you always wanted to do??

?Well, I guess I??

?So, go do it!?

Ada lifted her chin some, ?Maybe you?re right? What about you and?? she began, but was cut off when the waiter came with their check. He?d written his phone number on it, and slid it to Millie, smiling before he walked off. ?Sometimes I wish I looked like you,? she muttered, reaching to pull out her card.

?Why?

?You?re pretty? Guys have been looking at you all night.?

Hiccupping, Millie scrunched her nose. ?Have you ever considered maybe? Changing the way you dress. Please don?t take this the wrong way, but you look like you?re dressed by a blind nun??

?Not sure how else to take that??

Slamming her hand down on the table, Millie stood up and produced some cash. ?Come on. The night?s still young. I?m taking you shopping!?

?But I??? A defeated look, as she followed after the already retreating Millie.

Ada

The backs of her heels nearly dragged across the docks. All the red flags of humanity told her that it wasn?t the best place to roam around, but she didn?t seem to care. There was a blank expression on her face, the bottom half of which was mostly tucked away under the lip of her pea coat. She wore a pair of heels, black tights, and a dress beneath the coat. Her hair had been pulled back into a ponytail to keep the wind from blowing it against her tender face. A lone text message had been sent out earlier that day, and now? She was walking.

Footsteps behind her stopped her in her tracks, and a voice followed quickly behind her. ?I met you half way??

Ada turned to see Millie, she fought the urge to scold the girl for wearing little more than a t-shirt and jeans in the cold night air. She had to remind herself that Millie wasn?t human. ?I?m sorry,? she whispered. ?I shouldn?t have texted, I just??

It didn?t take Millie long at all to read that blank expression. To know that it was put there to hold back the flood gates. She stepped closer, ?Hey, don?t worry about it? I told you to text me, I meant it,? Millie smirked some. ?I only left the house to meet you so that you wouldn?t have to deal with Daemien?s grumpy ass,? she snickered.

She sputtered a weak laugh and shook her head, like she hadn?t wanted to laugh in that moment. ?Normally, I?d work?but there?s only so much you can do when you work from home,? she took in a breath of chilled air and sighed it out. ?Or I?d talk to my mom, but?? Millie frowned lightly when Ada trailed off and moved closer still. ?Or Malcolm,? she felt her eyes well up with tears and began spilling over. ?Things were supposed to be better,? she mumbled as she still tried to fight the sadness that was spilling over the brim.

Millie?s arms came out and wrapped around the taller girl, tugging her close and letting her bury her face against her cool shoulder. ?It?s alright,? she whispered. Comfort?wasn?t something she was used to giving anymore. Eva never seemed to need it, Martyr never seemed to seek it, and Daemien was different. She knew exactly how to cheer him up each?and every?time. Millie half wished that everything was as easy as Daemien in that moment. Go figure? Considering he was singlehandedly the most frustrating thing to ever exist on this planet. She didn?t try to cheer Ada up, though. Instead, she opted to just be there for the girl. That?s what she seemed like she needed at this point.

?My whole life has been revolved around my mother,? she whispered against Millie?s shoulder. ??all she wanted me to do was have a life, and now I have nothing,? Ada croaked and choked on the tears. ?I don?t know what to do, but I can?t go back there? I can?t,? she shook her head lightly. ?I love him so much,? Ada cried. ?How could I be so stupid?! What?s wrong with me??

?So, take some time off?? Millie muttered. ?I can take your place in the office for a little while, and you?? she pulled back and cupped the girl?s cheeks. ?Work on that life,? she smiled. ?Oh! You know what?? Millie asked. ?Our vet for the dogs is so hot, and so single,? the vampiress snickered and lifted her chin. ?I?m not pressuring you into anything, but like? If you want me to set you up on a date? I?m totally down. Eva can do your make up and stuff. Hell, if you want to just do a girls? night, we?re down for that, too. Just, try to busy yourself with something aside from work. Take a break from being around my idiot brother? Hey, stop crying.. Shh, I?m here.? The girl had lost Ada through most of that, and was back to holding the sobbing mess.
