"Alek, I want to ask you something."

"Cualquier cosa, beb?."

"Who attacked you."

I had just made it to the front porch steps when I couldn't control my legs anymore. I launched from that top step like a cannon, and when I landed, pain shot up both my legs. It only pushed me further. The night air was hot and heavy, like a forbidden tryst; full of energy, pulsating. I could barely breathe as my legs carried be through the streets. Around corners, through throngs of people. Sweat glistened on my skin, and tears ran from my eyes, but I didn't stop.

"Cinco o seis personas. They were.. big, big men. Well, not all of them, a couple of them were. Porque no har?a para que diga consegu? mi asno dado a m? por la gente min?scula."

"What happened..?"

"I was spying on them, and they found me."

My head swam as I ran, the air I was breathing too thick. My chest burned, I couldn't feel my legs or arms. It was like my body was on autopilot even though I was still in the cockpit. It took so much self control to not cry, because I knew if I did, I wouldn't stop. My foot caught on an uneven lump of ground, and I skidded forward on my hands and knees. Dirt forced itself into my skin, and stung. Without my even thinking about, it rose to my feet once again, and kicked off.

"That doesn't make sense.. they found you..?"

"S?..?"

"How..?"

I ran until I knew no one could hear me scream. I ran until I couldn't anymore. I ran until I crashed into the ground, my body full of knives from lack of oxygen. Still, I found the strength to suck in a long breath, and it exploded from my throat in a yell. As it hit the outside world, it echoed around me; vibrating, shaking. Like it was laughing at me. And why shouldn't it?

I was so stupid...

"Because you kept caaaaalling me! It rang and rang and rang and rang and rang and rang and-"

"The point, Alek."

" .. they found me because of my phone ringing, and then every time it made a noise they intentado forzar mis interiores sobre mi exterior."

I wouldn't stop calling him. Because of me, he was almost killed.. And why..? Because I was worried, and freaking out, and falling apart. All because of me.

"They had weapons didn't they. Or at least crude ones. Some marks on you, they were made by chains and crowbars, weren't they."

"S?, s?.. Noni, I need to sleep now. I'm sorry we couldn't-"

"One more thing... Where did this happen."

I screamed. Over and over again. Until I thought I was going to pass out. I don't know how long I laid there, but when I coughed, I swore I tasted blood. Rolling on my back, the sky, filled with stars, shimmered overhead. My chest was still heaving from the run. The tears still spilling from my eyes ran back across my temples and into my ears. I rubbed my face with my dirty, scraped hands and sighed shakily.

I didn't want to do this to him. Or anyone else. And he didn't tell me because he knew I would blame myself. But how could I not..? How could I say it wasn't anyone's fault but my own? The fact that I'd drilled him when he was plastered wasn't helping my guilt. I'm not a bad person, I don't want to hurt anyone.. I wished I could have gone back in time and stopped it from ever happening.

I felt more than saw Luvvie's gleam in the night. She was angry. Angry at me, angry at them. Just angry. And I agreed with her.

In that split second I made a decision. I was going to fix this. And they would most definitely rue the day I would.

Claude is my right hand man, the only one that's allowed to come and kill with me. He's tall, he's loud, he's American. And I hate him. But he's never let me down. And he doesn't ask too many questions.

"I need the car."

"For what?"

"A job."

"Need help?"

"No."

"And I suppose you don't want Rico to drive you."

"I got it, Claude."

"Alright, good luck."

And that was about the gist of it. I threw my jacket in first, then got in, and pulled on my gloves. The leather stuck to my skin and groaned when I flexed my fingers - a sound that I'd missed. Normally, the saying goes "When the gloves come off.." For me? It's the exact opposite.

I wrenched the car into gear, and slammed my foot down into the accelerator. The tires squealed, and the top was nearly sheared off as I shot out of the garage, not even waiting for the door to finish lifting. Through the rear view mirror, I saw Claude and Rico huddle together and converse, and I snorted. They were either trying to figure out what I was up to, or trying to convince one another to not say anything about it.

Ten minutes later, I parked the car and walked the rest of the five hundred or so yards to their location. It might have been a stupid thing to do had our vehicle not been equipped with a fail safe. In the event of a break-in, a powerful anesthesia would be pumped through the AC rendering the idiot or idiots unconscious in a manner of seconds.

They were right where Alek said they would be: a wide alley between six separate brownstone buildings and one cement stucco. There was spray paint on all the walls, even way up high. Some of the vandals must have used ladders to try and leave their mark. It was pathetic. But.. if that's how they wanted to waste their time, I was no one to judge. I heard voices, the rattle of chains; laughter. The unmistakable suction of lips leaving a beer bottle. They were all soaked with the stench of it. That, and rancid take-out food. I had a hard time believing that any of these punks were capable of taking Alek out.

But should I believe it or not, they did. And I was here to fix that.

My hair was loose, and sweat rolled down the back of my neck. I was thankful I left my jacket in the car. Stepping from the shadows of one of the brownstones, I pulled Luvvie from her holster and cocked the hammer. The click was loud in the muffled summer air, and everyone froze. Hands grabbed weapons, feet swerved on the ground. Puzzled murmurs floated between them. I nearly laughed when I saw their faces. I raised my arm, and Luvvie gleamed even in the dim light.

"Which one of you is the leader?" I flicked my eyes to each in turn, and studied their cocky expressions one by one. It was like I could read their thoughts. 'Heh, she's only one girl,' 'Tch, what does she think she's gonna do?' 'We're gonna have some fun with her...' The tallest of their group held coils of metal chains in their hands, and they pulled them taught. A girl to his left snickered. And then another with a baseball bat across his shoulder and a cap on his head gave me an upnod.

"Who's askin'?" The man was about half a foot taller than I was, bald, and chunky; but in a muscular way. The sunglasses on his face glittered just like his hairless head.

"Are you him?"

"And I asked you a question."

I squeezed Luvvie's trigger, and my wrist jerked back with her familiar kick. I saw a spray of dark blood hit the air as his kneecap was practically blown out the back of his leg. He went down with a shriek I hadn't heard come out of anything other than a girl. I cocked her hammer once more, and it clicked loudly, not drowned out in the slightest by the noise everyone was now making.

"I'm not going to ask again."

They all sprung at me at once, the most organized thing I'd seen them do so far.

The one with the chains got to me first, followed by the boy with the bat, and the girl who had been hiding a crowbar somewhere in her skanky outfit. The chains cut the air and whizzed past my ear as I sidestepped. One stomp on his outstretched elbow bent it the wrong way, and one shot to his brain stem put him down for good. He gasped and spluttered, like choking on mouthwash, and fell behind me in a heap. Luvvie's hammer clicked, and I spun her around my finger.

The bat boy thought he was clever, coming at me from behind, but I turned just in time. My knees bent as he slammed the bat down into my bad shoulder. Other than that, I didn't move, and his mouth gaped in terror. It was cute. He thought he could do more. Like his baseball bat was something special. He was Little League though, and he was playing a Big Leagues game. I shoved Luvvie's muzzle in between his teeth, and pulled her trigger. His eyes widened, and he crumpled as gray matter splattered the asphalt beneath us. I cocked the hammer one more time.

Three bullets left.

Crowbar girl aimed a downward swing at me that I just let pass. Sparks flew as the metal scraped the ground, and I blew her a kiss. Her face was mangled in rage.

Normally, I make it a rule that I don't use any weapons aside from Luvvie, but this was a special situation. I dropped low to the ground, and wrestled the thick chains from my first victim up into my own grip. They were still warm from his beefy hands. I settled Luvvie in her sling first, then whipped the chains out like a lasso. The one end wrapped several times around a would-be attacker's knees, and I used the other end to bludgeon them into oblivion.

I heard them all step back in surprise when I finally dropped the bloody irons. My chest heaved, taking in breaths that I didn't know I was holding. I felt sweat run down my back and behind my ears.

"You're all.. just *kids*," I said, almost in revelation. Because they were. Only a couple of them were older than me, and one of them I'd already killed.

"And what are you, our mom?"

I whipped around at the sound of someone readying a semi-automatic. The loud gunshot followed and the next thing I knew, I was flying backwards, with an incredible pain in my mouth that made me want to wail, and all the air knocked out of me.

I tried to move, but couldn't. The only good thing was that they weren't coming at me anymore..
