July 2nd
They had been best friends since they were children, so she should have known better than anyone. But he had scared her, coming up behind her and grabbing her like that. Reflexively, her hand closed around Luvvie as she whipped around, prepared to shoot.
From then on, it was hit and miss, but now, finally, they were alone. And Noni found it exceptionally easy to talk again.
"Guess it's just you an' me now." Alek fell silent and walked towards the door. "You don't have to walk me home. I'm sure you've got better things to do." Reaching for the door, Alek ignored the heaviness in his chest as those words forced their way past his lips.
"Alek, wait!" Nearly tripping over herself to catch up because she'd frozen in the middle of putting on her left show, she grapples a hold of a nearby chair, and curses, kicking the culprit footwear off.
He pauses, holding the door open. "Uh, ok." She was sending some weird signals, but he knew better than to get his hopes up. So often had she literally tripped over herself to be with him and yet nothing was cultivated. "Put on your shoes, tonta ni?a. I can wait for you."
Her Docs have a slight heel to them, so she limps to her left shoe and stomps it on her foot. "Look, the stuff with Fio.. I know how I said it and.." she lifts her head with a sigh, brushing back frizzing curls. They seemed to respond to her fraying attention. "Well, you said the same thing she did, about knowing your place." She scuffs over to her jacket and shrugs it onto her frame, tugging it into place, then grabbing her coffee.
Alek shrugged, nonplussed. "It's true, though. I just work for them. It's none of my business." He leaned against the door, waiting patiently for her. While she skittered around gathering her things, he watched her with a faint smile on his face. Noni was a little thing with big personality. When they were younger, he'd called her his Little Spanish Firecracker. It drove her crazy because she wasn't spanish. He admired her tenacity. "Don't worry about it."
"Just work for them.." Her frantic movements began to crawl as she says that aloud. Could she really just say that, though? She'd known them since they were all kids, and while she wasn't a close knit member of the Bohannons, they treated her like she was. Noni tentatively sipped at her cooled coffee and joined Alek at the door. "And I'm sorry about earlier, too. You just.. scared me." Nodding, unable to meet his eyes for the longest time, but when she does, they're twinkling in a smile that hasn't even touched her mouth.
He couldn't help it. He drew her into a hug for the second time that night, this one away from the leering eye of society and family. It was more for his sake than hers and it's length could be passed off as a hug from a best friend. That's how she would see it. Alek was just happy to hold her. Noni squeaked in surprise and threw her arms around his neck in response, holding tightly to her coffee and inevitably winding up on the very tips of her toes. "I'm glad you're back," he whispered into her curls before releasing her reluctantly. "You're not allowed to leave for that long again."
He led her outside and let the door shut tightly behind them, the bell ringing soundly as he didn't possess the stealth and prowess that Noni did when it came to sneaking around.
"Yeah.. that wasn't planned either. We've got a lot to catch up on." Noni stomps a touch of feeling back into her toes as she's ushered out, and she glances back at him with a ghostly grin. "I'll teach you someday, too."
