Adenna

"The Queen has summoned me. Allow me to pass." Nayun spoke with authority while standing before the two guards stationed in front of her sisters bed chambers. The voice she gave may have held weight, but coming from a girl of five foot one; it could be seen as somewhat odd. Even more when the girl had only turned sixteen years of age only a days past.

The guards. One who Nayun knew as Janis, yet the other was unknown to her. They looked between one another and pulled away their spears to offer her passage. There was only a nod offered toward the two in proper thanks before Nayun strolled past them. Her palm pressed to the cold steel that framed the door. It caused the small hairs on her arm to stand at attention. The sensation, though oddly enjoyed, was pushed from her thoughts the same moment she pushed the door open.

"Sister." she said upon entering.

The chamber door closing behind her; not even a second after she stepped through the entrance. Nayon, the queen of Adenna, sat where she usually did at late at night. On the terrace facing out toward the city. She offered Nayun not a word, but this was normal between the two sisters.

Nayun made her way through the room. Offering brief glances here or there to inspect the few items that littered her sisters bed chambers. Sparse, something unfitting for a Queen, but it was that exact reason many were not allowed within the room atop the right tower of the castle.

Nayun spotted the music box that sat upon the vanity. Rare thoughts coming to mind of years past when she first came to Adenna. It was under the same protection of the woman she was meeting now. Though back then her sister was no queen. Only the personal knight of the successor of Liltu. Nima. It was in that dimly lit chamber her sister kept below Nima's own that Nayun first spotted the music box. Curiosity had gotten the best of her after a week of wonder. The sound it made once she opened it was something that she had never experienced. It was one of the few things that the girl could call beautiful and really mean the word.

"Nayun. To me." Nayon finally spoke. It was husky, yet soft. Feminine, but held the tone of a person who had done much in their short years of life. Nayon was only twenty nine, yet she had taken the title of Queen only two years prior. Killing the one who held it before her in single combat - with only one knife between the two of them; the warrior's way. Or that is what it is called to those who train to become Siovanui. ` Good show!` was what the common folk spoke of it.

Her sister called it one word. Sad. Nayun did not understand why, but she could never question it. It was not her place.

The fresh air of the night wisped about Nayun as she stepped out onto the terrace. The castle was only one of the short list of areas were the rock and earth of the isles above were dug into to allow light; as well as the elements and seasons the guardians desired. It was why there was a soft blanket of snow all about the castle grounds. Even upon the very terrace she stood on, Nayun could see small patches of snow gathering about. They will need to be done away with once morning comes. Her sister with no doubt see to ordering that when the time came.

"Nayun." Nayon said. Nayun was close enough to see that soft smoke of chilled air leave past the warmth of her sisters lips.

"Yes, sister." she responded. Her steps leading to the table of many chairs, one that held her very sister, made a trail of her footprints. Prints that came to a stop when she stood beside her elder. Her queen.

"You are to be wed." Nayon said. Nayun was left to ponder her sisters words in silence. The creaking of the chair that Nayon sat upon sounding out as she rose.

"To be wed?" Nayun's confusion held within her very words.

Nayun could not understand this announcement. No, that was not true. She understood - but at the same time she could not grasp the concept. She would watch in silence after stating her question. Watching her sister, her queen, step closer to the slit stone railing at the end of the terrace. If this were the season of the sun, there would be vine wrapped roses there. But in Shiji Kumos winter -- it was left bare, to match well with the death that signified the coming winter.

Nayun watched Nayon linger. The older woman pressing bare hands against the winter-chilled stone.

"You are to be wed to the son of the Desert King. Alliances must be mended and kept." Nayon said.

The Desert King. Far south of Adenna, outside of the watchful eyes of the guardians. Past the monks of Winter Hill. In a land where snow and rain feared to touch -- it was there that the Desert King held power. Allies of Adenna, strong and honorable people. Nayun had spent some months within their city of Settesh. Learning horseback riding and archery alongside the watchful eyes of that very same King; though at the time he held the title of prince. Had it been four years already?

"He has a son?" Nayun questioned. It had indeed been four years since her stay. Nayun did not frequent her thoughts with the Prince turned King, so it came to her as a surprise; though a tone of this surprise was not found on her tongue. During her time spent within the city she had not heard or seen of any prince. The now-King's wife, she remembered. She was too soft, weak. Nayun disliked her when they met. Warriors of men was what the desert beloved, and women were the lesser sex. This was something Nayun disliked, and it was why confusion returned to her.

"Yes. I recall you ignored him since you were older by three years.. The boy was sickly, meek -- quiet." Nayon said.

Nayun still could not remember this boy. "I am a warrior." she followed after her sisters words.

"Did I say you are not? You. The warrior you are is what the Desert King desires, and it is you he wants for his son." Nayon's words came with a chilling breeze that crept across Nayuns uncovered face.

"I am to become Siovanui." Nayun spoke once more. She knew her words defied her orders, but this was something she could not simply throw away. To become Siovanui was the reason she left the shack within the forest of Cheston. To become Siovanui was the reason she followed her sister blindly and left mother behind. To become Siovanui..

To become Siovanui was all.

"You are to become Lily of the Valley. Nayun.. I have allowed this farce to continue long enough." Nayun was taken aback by her sisters words. Never had she heard her speak so much, not without even the slightest bit of pause.

"Lily of the Valley. Havelast thought it a position more deserving of your talents, but we cannot shun away the request of the Desert King. Siovanui is beyond you, sister.. Your mind, you are a risk to Adenna if you ascended." Nayon was never one for kind or soothing words. She was like Felipe, their mother, in that way.

"You are to become the wife of Prince Ren.. and once he takes the sun-gold seat of Settesh, you will be his queen." Nayon stilled her words only then. The Queens eyes focused intently on the scene of falling snow in front of her. But even that was only a pause.

"You are sixteen now.. You completed your ritual into womanhood in the past year, the time of childish dreams are over. Siovanui is beyond you.. You hold no Ichi blood. Look at the histories, Nayun. Look at all the woman who have tried - only to have failed and come back useless. Strong women. Strong women who were crippled by their own desire. The Ichis have something.."

"Freia." Nayun was quick with her example. Cutting off her sisters words, her own Queens words. She stepped forward with that show of defiance.

Yet all her sister did in response was shake her head before speaking. "She can no longer bare children.. Useless as a woman.. and to become Siovanui is beyond her as well. The Blade Witch is someone you should not hold high in regard.. Strong, yes. But she was foolish in her own wants to become Siovanui after being tainted. She is crippled. Like the rest of them."

"Nima made her strong. Liltu gave her knowledge. I will use this same example for you. Ren will make you strong. Having him means having his fathers men. Having his fathers men means Adenna is protected. What is the motto of Siovanui?" Nayon said with a pause after her question.

"To be Siovanui is to protect Adenna.. To protect Adenna is to be Siovanui." Nayun spoke in a low voice. As if the words she spoke were a prayer to the fallen warriors that danced as the constellations of stars above.

Nayon's words broke the pause of silence between them.

"Protect Adenna. You will be doing just that when you take the Prince as your husband."

"He will become a strong King, young Nayun. I have seen it." The words of the eighth Lilith of Liltu filled her ears. Nayun turned and faced the woman dubbed `The White Witch`. "and you'll be there by his side.."

"War will come, and his men - your men, will paint the desert red and give time for Adenna to be warned. The horns of battle will echo across the dry air, overpowering the sounds of clashing steel and the wails of dying men." Lilith said. She wore nothing more than a simple white gown. Yet her body did not shudder even once from the freezing air. Many called her beautiful, but Nayun could not agree. Something about her was strange. It was a feeling that Nayun suspected would never leave her.

"Why should we trust a witch?! Trusting a witch brought these islands down upon Adenna..!" Nayun was losing her temper, something rarely seen. She grit her teeth and clenched her fists. Siovanui. She was to become Siovanui! Havelast smiled down at her and told her she could do such a thing if she tried hard enough. Her sister spoke of the same. The Siovanui Seirichi told her that they would spar after her ascension and that Nayun herself would most likely be the victor.

".. Still your tongue." Cold words. Even if delivered with the monotone voice that was her sisters. Though now she was no longer speaking to her as her sister, no - it was an order from her Queen.

Nayun grit her teeth and bowed her head. "I apologize.. I lost myself." She practically forced the words past her lips.

"I expected your words and more, young Nayun.. there is no need to apologize. I believe my own daughter would feel as you do if it were her." Lilith said with a chuckle. Nayun's tensed body couldn't help but shudder. Liltu women are strange. Liltu people are strange.

"My daughter would have added a little more flair with her protests." Lilith said. Nayun watched as the witches ample bosom rise and fall as she sucked in cold air and let it loose only seconds later in the form of a sigh.

"I see war in the future, child of Adenna. Both Havelast and your sister have been told of this. Sad that I must say.. Havelast wasn't swayed much by my words. I believe he has had his fill of oracles speaking of the future.. But, your sister knows when to heed a warning from even the White Witch." Lilith smiled when she spoke those words.

".. You should not call yourself such, my Lilith." Nayon said. Words that Nayun could not understand. Why her sister still spoke to the past Lilith of Liltu as if she were above her status as Queen of Adenna.

"The term-" Nayon's words halted by Liliths own

"A term I find endearing. Your Adennian titles have grown on me over the past twenty five years. I wear it like a badge of honor. I do look good in white, do I not? You can agree with this, young Nayun." Lilith said.

Nayun's face held a painfully blank expression. Everything that she had strived for was shattered and laying about her in the small blanket of snow. Snow that slowly grew, stretching across the terrace they stood upon.

"Seirichi.. she said." Nayun tried. Seirichi's own words were her last defense. Seirichi said she could become Siovanui. A living, breathing Siovanui told her she could become a legendary protector of Adenna.

"My daughter.. is far too kind. A trait from me. If she were more like her mother, she would have given you the hard - yet real truth from the beginning. Your sister spoke of it already.. Your mind is something that cannot grasp the power of Siovanui. If by some chance you are triggered into a rage, what would happen to the city you swore to protect?" Lilith was not smiling when she said this. Her plush lips had formed into the smallest of frowns. Nayun read it as that.

A frown meant sadness. Was that what she felt deep within her chest?

"But.. Siovanui." Nayun continued to push. Though she no longer had any other cards to play.

"Is beyond you." it was her sisters voice that spoke through the cold air that time.

Lilith stood there with pale hands grasped dantily and pressed against her stomach. Her lips parting to speak after Nayon. "You will be a Queen, young one. You will still protect Adenna. Is that not what you wanted? To protect the city that has given you so much?"

".. Mother.. To become Siovanui, for mother.." Nayuns voice cracked when she said that. Thoughts of Felipe filled her head. She was who she wanted to save. It was Felipe - her mother - who she wanted to bring back to the protection of Adenna. If she were to become Siovanui, she could do just that. If she were to become Siovanui and defeat the woman titled the Puppet Witch, Erika.

Her heart was beating rapidly, her eyes became wetten by her own forming tears. She felt faint, weak. Nayun didn't know how long she could control herself right now; nor did she care. Control was the last thing on her mind. "Save mother.."

"Sleep." A whisper met Nayuns ears. A whisper that held the tone of the White Witch of Liltu.

Nayun felt fatigued instantly. Like a pulse, it ran throughout her body causing her to become limp. She fell into the arms of the White Witch. How she had gotten to her so fast, Nayun did not know -- but it was Lilith who kept her from falling to the terrace floor.

"I will speak with her once she wakes.. I apologize, my Lilith.." Nayon's words echoed within Nayun's thoughts. She struggled to stay awake.

Mother..
Siovanui..
Whispers within her mind muttered words Nayun wished she could speak with frozen lips.

"Ahhh~. There is no need for you to worry. Allow me. If my tongue can sooth the rage of Techichi, I.." Lilith's voice dwindled away. Nayun could no longer fight the spell and was soon embraced by the darkness that came with sleep.

"You're awake.. Good. I was beginning to fear that you'd sleep away another day." The amused voice of Lilith met her ears. Nayuns eyes squeezed tight, then began to slowly open. Her body ached from oversleeping and she felt the need to stretch, but she dare not move. When vision became less blurry she was finally able to take in the sights of the room. They must still be in the castle, the walls held the same stones that made up the rest of the grand building. The room was small, and it lacked a window, but she could feel and taste the arcane in the air. She was in the White Witches personal chamber.

"Now.. do not give me the silent treatment. I know you will have questions soon enough. Feel free to ask me anything." Lilith said. Nayun looked to the woman that sat beside her. No longe was she in the white gown Nayun had seen on the terrace. For now, she looked to be within a silk robe of crimson.

Nayun sucked in a breath. As she became more awake, she began remembering what had transpired only in, what she felt, moments ago. In reality it had been days -- but day's meant little to her right now.

".. You spoke of war.. but why me? Why must I marry?" Nayun worked her jaw after she spoke. It ached along with the rest of her body.

"I foretold war.. and yes, you are correct. Nayun.. It is not a new concept. Who did you expect to marry?"

Nayon. Her sister. She married for love. She killed Havelast's past wife for honor, and for love. Nayun could not grasp the concept. She did not love as others did. Nayun enjoyed spending time with a chosen few, but she could never see herself opening up in such a way. It could hurt her becoming Siovanui..

Becoming Siovanui..

Nayun grit her teeth when the thought came to mind. Though it lessened when Lilith spoke. ".. Nayun, we do not do this without reason. If you will allow me, I will show you exactly why things must be this way."

"Relax. Breathe, calm yourself." Nayun tried to follow what the past Lilith told her. But the chill of the woman's fingers pressing against her forehead caused Nayun to tense up.

"Relax.." Lilith's hushed tone whispered out.

`It will be like a dream.` she told Nayun.

`The more you relax, the more clear the visions will be.`

Nayun tried. She really did. But the cold feeling of those fingers were too distracting. She sucked in another heavy breath, then held it. Nayun heard a sigh -- and then the feeling of another pulse. She was under the Witches spell then. She no longer felt anything, she could no longer move anything. Her mind was all she had left.

"Relax.." The soothing words from the pale white woman came to her as a lullaby.

"Do you see it?" Lilith's voice spoke within her thoughts. It reminded her of MoonBeryl, but this time she expected it. She felt afraid, but there was no danger. Do you see it. She focused on those words, and then it came. The image blurred at first, but the more she focused on it -- the more clear it became. She saw a man sitting. A man sitting on what looked to be a chair. As she focused more, the chair became more detailed. It was the Kings throne. The one Havelast sits upon; though it looked strange. It was surrounded, but by what? Nayun continued to focus. Trying to peer deeper and with more detail on what those objects would be. Until she recognized the sheathed blade at the front. Standing tall and proud from its stone base beside the throne.

Kamonbak.?

Nayun Takamine

Date: 2012-10-07 19:54 EST
"Yes.. Kamonbak." Lilith's voice echo'd within her thoughts. "Aro as well.. along with the others, do you see them? All nine blades."

The image became more and more clear with the help of Lilith's words. All nine blades surrounded the throne, no - they surrounded the one who sat within it. But he was no longer along. Two other seats appeared at either side. Nayun focused on the righter most, and the one who sat upon it. The image came quicker this time -- and she could make out the figure of a woman. Long black hair kept braided and held over her right shoulder. Petite, she held much of the same features as Nayun and her sister. Nayun's confusion might have been felt by Lilith, as she spoke soon enough.

"Look to the one at his left.. They look the same, do they not?"

They did. She wore her braided hair slung over left shoulder. Nayun looked between the two -- they could be mirrored copies of one another if it wasn't for the subtle expressions that their faces held. The left woman seemed more gentle in the eyes, but the right held a feirce look that could be akin to Nayon's own at times.

Who..?

"Have you not realized? They are the twins.. your nieces.. and the one in the middle."

Nayun had thought it to be Havelast. Who else would sit upon the throne. Yet when she focused, she did not see the gentle looking elder gentleman she knew as Havelast Dagger Sasc. Instead - she saw a man in his late twenties. Beardless, with dark hair and brown eyes. Nayun tried to focus more - but she just couldn't understand. It was only until she focused on his eyes did she realize something.

Karaichi..

"Do you see it now? This is the vision of Adennas future. This is what comes with you taking the prince as your husband.. War is coming - I have no reason to speak false truths to you.. and what comes of this war if you do not play your role?"

The image changed drasticly. No longer did the throne hold its King. What appeared instead was only charred wreckage. A single blade stuck within the middle of the throne -- a blade that held no meaning and no connection to the nine sacred swords. Nayun could even feel the surrounding flames lick against her body. It caused her to panic -- and then there was darkness. Her eyes fluttered open. The feeling of her body returning to her. Nayun looked to the side to find Lilith, and stared.

"To be Siovanui is to protect Adenna.. To protect Adenna is to be Siovanui. The motto holds more meaning. It is not only meant for those who wish to become Siovanui. To be you is to protect Adenna.. To protect Adenna is to be you." Lilith said. The hand that graced Nayun's forehead pressed against the witches own. She looked troubled. It was a rare sight to see such a thing, and Nayun knew that for a fact.

"To be you is to protect Adenna.. To protect Adenna is to be you." Nayun repeated those words in the form of a soft whisper.

"Do you understand, Nayun? There is a reason for everything." Lilith looked to her. The troubled expression had not left her face. Though she might have tried to mask it with a gentle smile, Nayun could still make it out.

"Will you do this for the city you care so much for? That you would be willing to risk your life to protect?"

"Leave me..." Nayun said between shaken breaths. She felt her eyes begin to water. This was not what she thought would become of her. Her eyes closed tight. She felt those tears squeeze past them and begin to line the sides of her cheeks. "Leave me.." Nayun repeated. Her aching body twisting about to press face againt pillow, and she'd scream into it.

To be Siovanui is to protect Adenna. To protect Adenna is to be Siovanui.

To be you is to protect Adenna. To protect Adenna is to be you.

Time had passed and Nayun was left to her own thoughts within that tiny chamber. Nayun's eyes occupied themselves founding the small bug-like arcane creatures that flutter and flew about the air above her. They were hypnotic in a way, where one turned right another moved left -- only to have yet another split apart to create two more. It was hard to really tell how many there were, and whenever she shut her eyes to allow them to rest, more or less would appear once open.

Nayun kept quiet. Her thoughts were her santuary. All the information that had been granted to her processed. The White Witch of Liltu had told her she must keep what she knew to herself. Nayun had to swear on it. Orders were orders, but she could not help but think spells had been involved when the pact as made. Nayun closed her eyes again and sucked in a breath. When she reopened them, the chamber was dark and without even the smallest illumination from the mana-creatures.

"Sister." It was Nayon. Nayun could never mistake that voice.

Nayun would not move to face her, and instead parted her lips to speak. "I am listening."

"I do this not only to protect Adenna. I do this to protect you. Do not think of me as a tyrant or unjust."

Her words weren't doing their best to sooth Nayun's pain. Her body twisting and curling against the bed. She drew arms up and pressed palms roughly against ears; attempting to block out the sound of her sisters voice.

"Nayun. You will be leaving in the coming week.. The snow should be calm by then."

No matter how hard she pressed those palms to her ears, she just couldn't block out that voice. Nayun squeezed her eyes shut and held her breath. She held it, and held it, up till the point where she could no longer stand it. She sucked in much needed air and opened her eyes while doing so. Slowly, she lowered her hands and heard not a sound outside of her own breathing.

There was a pause. Nayun was afraid to turn. Expecting to see her sister standing behind her. But she could no longer feel her presence. Slowly, Nayun turned about within her sheets and looked to the now empty entrance of the room.

".. The coming week.." She said. Everything felt so finalized. It was what she liked. Plans set into motion without delay, yet here she was acting as this delay. Orders were to be followed -- but for once, she did not want to follow them.

The days grew shorter, the nights longer. Nayun could no longer sleep with empty thoughts. Her mind too troubles and it was detailed on her face. Dark bags having grown under her eyes being these signs.

Her days filled with dress fittings. Silk and other fabrics from the southern lands. So that she would have proper wardrobe for her stay. Her body tensed and jerked at pinpricks, and she could no longer keep count of how long she had stood there while men and women measured and set pieces in place. This was not meant for a warrior woman of Adenna. She was to be outside, training, swinging her sword till her hands blistered and her shoulders and back ached. Yet here she stood, acting far too noble and womanly for her liking.

"Would you like yellow? Perhaps pink?" One of the women asked her. Out of the many questions, Nayun could not understand why that was the one she snapped out of her thoughts for.

"It does not matter. Whatever is pleasing for the King of the Desert." Nayun's monotone masked the frustration she felt.

"And what should we do with this?" Janis said. Holding and dangling the Keeper of Air's key before her face. Nayun watched as she gave it a twist and a turn. A shimmer of light danced across Janis' face when light reflected from the key just right.

"Return it to RhyDin." Nayun said. Sucking in a breath and closing her eyes when she felt the fabric about her waist tighten. She knew that she could no longer hold the title if she was to be sent down south. There would be no way she could possibly defend such a thing. The duels - titles - RhyDin, right now they meant little -- though Nayun did wish it was the opposite.

"Understood, Future Princess." Nayun shot a look to the speaking - and now smiling - Janis. "It's true." Who then winked at her and walked away. Twirling the chain that held the Keepers Key about her right index finger.

"I am not a princess.." Nayun muttered low.

"Not yet, but one day." One of the many tailors said from behind her.

A reminder Nayun wished she hadn't heard.

"If only she hadn't butchered her hair.. the girl had such lovely hair." An older woman spoke. Shaking her head. Another spoke after, at Nayun's right "and that tattoo.. Should it be removed?"

"No." Nayun said quickly. That tattoo, she felt, was the last reminder of what she dreamed of becoming Siovanui. And she would not part with it. If the Desert King disliked it. The thought alone caused Nayun's body to tense once again. ".. Adennian warriors pride themselves in their scars and markings.. He wanted a warrior, he will have one." Nayun said through clenched teeth.

Soft claps sounded out from each direction. Nayun looked about in confusion, yet the women - and men - were smiling up at her. Why were they? Was it pandering to her new position? Or something more? Nayun had no clue as to what she should say, so she did what she usually did. She kept quiet. She closed her eyes, straightened her back, and set her shoulders. Preparing for the fitting to continue.

They could dress a woman of Adenna in silks and cloth, but all they were doing was concealing the warrior within. Well hidden, and well prepared to strike on a moments notice. I am a warrior.. Nayun's own thoughts echoed in her mind. My battle ground is only changing from snow to sand.. but I am a warrior.

A Road Less Traveled

The snow covered road that left southern Adenna was a bumpy one. Uneven and was in need of repairs. Twenty two years had passed since the introduction of Liltu's portal system; and how it spoiled the city. The roads to the south were less traveled. Those who made pilgrimages to Winter Hill were few in numbers, so upkeep never felt like much of an option. But now the road was in use. With a small caravan of travelers seeking to cross the frozen passage that led to the desert just beyond it.

Nayun sat within the spacious carriage. Her body leaning left to right, to and fro at times, but she found the rocking somewhat comforting. It was quite chilly even within the confines of the carriage, but the white wolf pelt cloak gifted to her was doing its part to keep Nayun warm. `A wedding gift` The Goddess of the Hunt, Crane, had told her. The past few weeks were a constant reminder of what was coming for Nayun. What would become of her life once they traveled past Winter Hill.

"Isn't it strange?" Dawn said. The blonde haired girl settled upon her knees beside Nayun. She wore a wolf pelt cloak as well, but hers was from the grays that frequented the outer-most edges of Guma Kizo's isle. Lesser in beauty - or so Nayun was told - but the girl could not see much of a difference in it outside of color and practicality. It was to keep them warm and that was all Nayun cared about.

Nayun had never expected that Dawn would be allowed to come along. But when words were spoken from the lips of the Queen of Adenna. Actions that brought praise and honor to a family followed. Dawn's mother and father felt proud that their daughter was given this opportunity. Or at least that was what Nayun had been told by her friend.

"What is strange?" Nayun spoke after a brief pause.

"The Blade Witch coming along.. isn't that weird?" Dawn's answer gave Nayun reason to turn her head and peer up. The other girl had moved the drape out of the way so that she could peer out from the tiny window. Nayun shifted in her seat. Moving to press a knee to it and rise up enough to look out from it as well. Her red eyes looking through the window to take in the image of the snow-ox riding Freia. It was far too cold for horses for travel through Winter Hill -- but a snow-ox was there for such events. They may be slower, but their fur and fat made up for their lack of speed.

"The Eighth is looking for possible candidates within Settesh.. There is no other reason for her to come along." Nayun was told that was Freia's orders, but she couldn't quite shake the feeling that there was something more to this; but for now, she wouldn't question it.

Nayun turned and settled herself back down against the bench. Something she wished Dawn would do, but the younger girl was far too busy taking peeks at the woman who guarded their rear.

".. They say she can't have children." Dawn commented while ducking down a little. Nayun suspected that Freia might have looked her way.

"That is what they say." Nayun agreed. Silently hoping that would be the end of that conversation. She wasn't upset by Dawn's choice of words, but she would rather not talk about the woman with her so close by.

"You don't think she'll curse us, right..? That's what she does.." There was a small hint of fear in Dawn's voice.

Nayun knew better than to follow the rambling of those who thought the woman was cursed. Freia had been one of the few who survived attempting to become Siovanui. A failure who allowed herself to be used by Liltu to create one of the second generation Mage-Killers. Nayun herself held the mark of the second generation as well, yet no one spoke of her slinging curses on bad little girls who don't come home in time for dinner.

"She will not. You should worry more about the cold and less about those who travels with us." Nayun began. A pause between her first set of words and those that followed. "Sit." It came as an order. Something Nayun rarely did when speaking with Dawn.

Nayun was not watching the blonde, but she did hear her began to shift and move. Soon enough the two of them would be sitting side by side to one another.

"I wonder how much longer.." Dawn said with an antsy voice. Being confined to this carriage for the last nine hours seemed to be getting to her. The first three hours seemed fine, and she slept the next five, but now Dawn had begun acting strange. Nayun believed she needed to simply get out and stretch her legs, but they couldn't stop yet. Not until Winter Hill.

"It will come when it comes. Wait and relax." Nayun hoped it came later than sooner. Every hour that passed was an hour away from Adenna -- the city she called her home. And every hour that past meant she'd be closer to Settesh - the city in the desert that was to become her future. She knew of what she must do, but the feeling of longing for the city that adopted her was still felt within her heart.

"Should I start calling you Princess?" Nayun closed her eyes when she heard Dawn's words.

"No.. I am no princess yet. I would rather you speak my name.." Nayun said. Reaching over her shoulders to take hold of the wolves head of her cloak. Fingers brushed against the soft white fur, then lightly gripped so th at she could pull the hood over her head. The wolves snout hanging just below her own nose.

"Awoooooooo~!" Nayun heard from beside her. She pressed an index finger to the hood of her cloak. Pushing it up enough so that she could peer out from under it. Beside her was the sitting Dawn, who decided to put her own hood over her head.

"Awoooooo~!" She continued. Nayun stared in question. But the girl only howled once more, and then pinched at her own hood so that she could look Nayun's way. They locked eyes briefly, then Dawn tugged back down the hood and gave yet another howl.

"We're wolves going to the desert.. we need to stick together. Wolves work in packs." Dawn said after her howl.

It was then, after closing her eyes, that Nayun let go of her own hood. It fell back into place to cover the upper half of her face. She pulled her lips apart just enough to suck in a breath.. and then.

"Awoooooooooo!" -- "Awoooooooooo~!" The two of them howled. Dawn's own hurried along seconds after Nayun's.

There was a rasp against the side door. Dawn was the one to move. Nayun could hear her shifting and soon enough the door unlocking. The darker haired girl peeking out from under her hood enough to see that Dawn had checked before opening. A cold blast of air ran through the inside of the carriage, and a voice followed after it.

"You two little wolves should keep it down.. We don't need to attract the bigger ones, now do we?" Freia said with a spear pointing towards the both of them.

Dawn began to speak what sounded like an apology, but was soon quieted when she heard Nayun's voice from behind her.

"Awoooooooooo!"

"Awooooooooo~!" Dawn followed along. Her place at the opened door causing her howl, along with Nayun's, to travel farther in the form of an echo.

"Close the door.. you'll catch your death. We will be arriving at Winter Hill within the hour." Nayun could see Freia shaking her head, and perhaps a glimpse of a smile on her lips. Dawn quickly shut the door and locked it, then turned to Nayun with a bright smile.

"Wolves do travel in packs.." Nayun said nodding, and they howled once more.

Winter Hill

"The darkness that sleeps is true I'm told
Children of Liltu young and old
It wakes in the night to bring us a fright
When fire-light dies cold.

The beasts that seek are true I'm told
Children of Liltu young and old
They'll steal you away, you've become their prey
As night grows long and cold."

The song that Freia sang echoed within the cold wind of Winter Hill. A song Nayun knew well during her time within the Tower of Liltu. It was a warning from mothers to their children. When the beast of winter came -- it came for them. So keep your fires lit and family close. Though it no longer held meaning during the modern times of Liltu. No longer did the people live above ground, so the song was simply just a song. A glimpse into the past of what the people of Liltu had once done. History should never be forgotten. That was what the Eighth Lilith had told her.

They had made camp within the walls of the temple, but the one known as the Witch of Blades was not permitted to enter. Those who were tainted, as Nayun had been told, walked the path the monks could not tread. It was better to keep the undesired away - or else they too may fall victim to their curse. If only they knew that hidden away, under many pieces of cloth, Nayun bared the same mark as the woman. But what they did not know would not hurt them - or at least that was what Freia had told her. Her warmth and proper sleep was more important then their superstitions.

Yet sleep would not come to Nayun. She tossed, she turned, and soon enough found herself flat on her back against the thin stack of blankets that had been called her bed. Dawn slept soundly beside her, that girl was never the type to have trouble with sleep it seemed. Nayun silently wished she could close her eyes and be taken by sleep like her friend had been; but sleep just would not come.

Nayun left the safety and warmth of her makeshift bed. Grasping hold of leather black boots and shoving her feeth within. Rising after and grabbing hold of her wolf-pelt cloak and bringing it about her figure. Her sheathed blade was taken last. Warmth came slowly, but warmth was warmth -- she could not curse it for not coming faster. Nayun slowly left her sleeping companions and made her way across the grand room they had been allowed to stay within. One would except more luxury, but these monks lived simple lives. You shouldn't expect much from those who do not do much for themselves other than sleep, eat, and train.

"The beasts that seek are true I'm told
Children of Liltu young and old
They'll steal you away, you've become their prey
As night grows long and cold.."

The song continued to echo softly throughout the hall. The closer Nayun moved for it, the louder it became; but even that was a soft sound to her ears. She came upon those large double doors and the two massive fires that roared at either side of it. Nayun pressed her palm against the wooden frame, then leaned to press her forehead against it as well.

"The darkness that sleeps is true I'm told
Children of Liltu young and old
It wakes in the night to bring us a fright
When fire-light dies cold."

Nayun closed her eyes. The verses may not be many, but it was still comforting to hear. She pushed from the door and stepped aside. Moving closer to the right-most fire and slowly settled herself beside it. Freia's voice, Nayun could still hear it from the other side of the door. The same lyrics continued without any hint of stopping. It was strange how much it soothed her. Nayun closed her eyes and focused on the woman's sung words.

".. The darkness that sleeps is true I'm told.. Children of Liltu, young and old.. It wakes in the night.. to bring us a fright.. When fire light dies cold."

Nayun closed her eyes while she sang. Huddling for warmth within that cloak, but also gaining it from the fire that burned beside her. The girls head began to tilt to the side, and her body slouched. The arms that had been wrapped about her katana had also loosen some. Sleep had finally came, and it came on the wings of a song.

Gong... Gong..

The bells of Winter Hill sang with their departure. Nayun looked out from the carriage. Seeing the few monks that had decided to watch them leave offer prayers for their safe journey. Nayun offered them a raise of her hand before returning inside her snow-ox pulled transportation. Once the door was closed, she allowed herself to relax back against the softness of that bench seat. Nayun peered to her left and looked upon a rather drowsy looking Dawn.

"I'm still tired.." Dawn said with a long yawn.

"You may sleep.. it is not like you are being forced to stay awake." Nayun countered. Dawn gave her a stare, something Nayun returned without missing a beat. It only lasted for twenty three seconds, and then the blonde huddled within the warmth of her own wolf pelt cloak and closed her eyes.

"Do you think I can sleep for two days..?" She said. Nayun reflected on what Freia had told them. It would be two days before they would even see the city in the desert, and even then it would take them hours to arrive. One day to make their descent down Winter Hill -- and another to cross the sea of sand. It will be warm.. that is some good news. Nayun thought to herself.

"Impossible.. You do need to stretch." Nayun finally answered the sleepy Dawn; who then gave her a sort of pout before curling into a little lump beside her so that she could warm herself more. "and eat." Nayun added.

While Dawn wanted to sleep, Nayun wished to do the opposite. Her body screamed for freedom. She wished to run, climb, work her body. Do something to feel more alive. Yet all she could do was sit here and go along for the ride. Perhaps she could walk some in the desert, but for now -- with the cold of Winter Hill at their backs, it was best if she kept inside.

"A long trip.." Nayun muttered.

"A real long trip.. but I'm glad I came." Dawn said.

Nayun hadn't expected her words. Blinking, she looked to the blonde for a few moments. Then she would answer.

".. I'm glad you came as well."

The Desert Wastelands

The party of travelers left the chilling cold and entered to the whip-winded heated air of the desert. Nayun's whitewolf pelt cloak no longer had use, as the sun beating them from up high provided enough warmth to cause sticky sweat to seep down her skin. Heavy wool clothing switched to something more lighter -- more thin. A leather tunic strapped to chest, yet the white cloth that made up the rest of her attire shudder and shook against the soft breeze of the desert.

Nayun had been granted her wish. Allowed to walk beside her camel. She hadn't rode one in years, yet it proved to be simple enough once she had gotten the hang of it. Dawn had some trouble -- and it provided the guards that accompanied a good laugh at her expense; but once the beat-red faced blonde finally took the reins and was able to stay on for more than a minute, she began to ride like the best of them.

Cloth and leather bound feet pressed to the sand while Nayun walked beside her mount. "Take him." She said to one of her walking companions. Matthew, that had been his name. It reminded her of the man back in RhyDin -- yet he was 5 inches shorter and not as buff when it came to muscles, yet this boys sword stung like the best of them. Matthew flashed her a smile and took grip of the reins, allowing Nayun to step forward without having to guide the beast. Her speed shown in that instant as she pressed foot to loose sand and forced herself forward one worked step after the other.

Traveling on sand was somewhat difficult compared to the cobbled streets of Adenna, but Nayun enjoyed the effort. She could feel her muscles ache when they stopped to rest, and it reminded her that she was here -- that she was alive. She stepped past Dawn, who was currently speaking to the ever alert Freia. Nayun had noted that Dawn had become more and more comfortable with the one she had once called `The Blade Witch`. Hearing Dawn now call her Miss Freia was somewhat odd now.

"So they disappear after you use a spell?" Dawn questioned with interested eyes.

"Mhm.. I'll be able to show you soon. See out there? In the distance?" Freia up-nodded in the direction of south; the direction they had been traveling this whole trip. "A sand storm will be approaching soon.. An hour or so."

Nayun kept silent in her eavesdropping. Keeping low and quiet behind the two. But she was found soon enough when a shift of wind beat against them from the right. Freia's head rose, and a long wiff of air was taken within her nostrils. "Nayun. It isn't nice to listen on others conversations."

"I apologize.." Nayun said quick. But Dawn shifted upon her camel to look her way and offered a bright smile. "She's playing. You're playing. Yes - Miss Freia?"

"I might just be." There came a low chuckle from the Blade Witch while she turned to face the south once more. "You heard what I said? A sand storm will be here soon. You better prepare yourself. Though there's no need to worry. I am here, after all."

Dawn clapped her hands. Possibly boosting Freia's own ego -- or that was what Nayun suspected would come. The sand-walking girl simply thinned her lips and peered out in front of herself. Focusing on the distance instead of what was in front of her own feet. "I see.. Will we be making camp soon?"

Freia gave a tilt of her head. Her body wobbled about left to right from her place on top of her own camel. "Another thirty minutes.. then we'll stop. Enough time for to set up a barrier." Nayun parted her lips to comment, but something was thrown her way. Hands rose up instantly to catch the water-skin. Nayun looked to it, and the riding Freia.

"Drink." Freia said. Then whipped her reins and readied herself for the camels quick burst of speed. She road ahead, no doubt wanting to speak her plan of stopping with those who made the head of their caravan.

She needs more water than I.. Sister has instructed me to lay low if combat should arise. She needs her strength. Nayun thought to herself. Yet the feeling of thirst that was held within her throat prompted her to drink soon enough. She took a heavy gulp, and then pulled the skin away and corked it right after.

"You are looking better." Nayun said. Jogging a few paces forward to walk beside Dawn. "There is no reason for them to laugh anymore."

Dawn smiled brightly at her friends words. "Mhm! Now I'll be able to tell Mother and Father how I tamed this mighty beast." She then reached to brush her hand along the camels neck. The animal gave out a groan of sorts then spit off to the side; something Nayun was forced to step away from at the last moment.

"They will be proud. No doubt.. I would like to thank you once more for coming. I did not expect such." Nayun said. Offering the water-skin to the blonde. Dawn was forced to lean just a little. She swiped her hand out and took grasp of the water. Dawn paused, but only to take a drink before she answered. "The Queen asked me herself.. It was an honor! I never expected seeing the Queen step foot into my families home.. Mother looked so proud, and father served her tea." Dawn was all smiles when she spoke.

"Not many people like me get this chance.. I'm no warrior, or merchant.. I'm just good with my hands." Dawn said sheepishly. Nayun kept her eyes upon the blonde as she walked beside her. I gave her this chance.. Nayun thought. She then reached up and offered a gentle touch to the girls cloth covered thigh.

".. Thank you." Nayun said. Dawn reached to press her own hand against Nayun's.

"That's what friends do for one another." Dawn's smile told Nayun she should give one in return.

And so she'd smile.

The sandstorm raged around them. Yet they felt none of it as they kept place within the barrier created by Freia. That light purple hue of color rippled with every beat of sand against it, but it would not break. While on the outside the wind howled, the inside of the barrier was filled with sounds of music. One woman who had introduced herself to Nayun as Beatrice played the guitar, and a silent man who never spoke his name beat simple rhythm on his drum.

Dawn had made a new friend out of the boy Matthew it seemed. They danced with one another beside the roaring fire. Bumping hips and grasping each others hands to twirl about it. Nayun watched beside some pieces of luggage. Her head cant to the side and eyes full of wonder as she watched both boy and girl dance. Dawn had borrowed Nayuns newly made skirt of chiming bells -- it was something the women of Settesh danced in, and it seemed Dawn was giving Nayun a good example of what might be expected of her.

The bells chimed when Dawn and Matthew struck hips to one another once again, and they followed it with Dawn taking the lead and twirling the young man about. Nayun perked a brow. Dawn looked to be enjoying herself.. far too much - and the look she had been giving this man, it caused Nayun to purse her lips in small worry. ".. I should step in.." She muttered.

"You shouldn't. Let them have their fun." Freia said. The Mage-Killer stepped from around the luggage. It had been her turn to patrol, and her return meant nothing of threat had come to them. "When the boy ventures into her tent while the rest of us sleep? That is when you step in." She continued. Offering a pointed finger in the direction of Nayun.

"The barrier.. do you require help? I have not activated my seal since last leaving Liltu." Nayun's words looked to cause a look of thought to appear on Freia's face. But the older woman only shook her head.

"We should be fine. You need to relax.. Don't think I haven't been watching, girl. You've walked more than you've ridden."

"Your legs." Freia pointed out.

She reached with her right leg to give both of Nayun's legs to quick tap with her foot.

"Rest them. I want to see you riding tomorrow. There's sand snakes and scorpians about. Delivering a dead future princess wouldn't look good for me." She then turned about and offered Nayun a wave before venturing closer to the fire to eat her dinner. "Rest, Nayun."

Nayun looked to her aching legs, then to the dancing two at the fire. The chimes of the bells filling her ears.. and she focused on that sound. The sound, and the dancing girl who made them.

"Odd.." Nayun's voice filled the air. It was a nice break from Dawn's talk of it being `Far too hot..` Freia perked a brow when looking Nayun's way, while Dawn had been far too busy leaned over and resting while riding upon her mount.

"Odd? Add more words to your statements." Freia said.

Nayun would not respond with words at first. She instead rose an arm and pointed out to their left. Freia followed the direction that had been pointed, but even as she began to squint her eyes - she could not see anything but sand and sky.. It was until a shimmer of reflected light came from the distance did she finally look to understand. The woman rose in alert, and looked Nayun's way.

"How long have you seen that?" Freia said. A serious expression written on her face.

"Ten minutes.. I thought it could be something more, but it seems to be following beside us as we move." Nayun turned to look off into the distance. "There. It shines again.." She pointed.

When she did, Freia broke away from the group. Her camel speeding up while she stormed across the sands. The rest of the group noticed, and things began to slow down. Only until one of the men up front yelled out to the rest -- a yell that was followed by another to pass the message.

"Do not slow any! She will catch up on her own!" the second yell commanded.

Dawn was alert now. She looked about confused and furrowed her brow in question at Nayun. "What's going on..?" She said.

Nayun thinned her lips in annoyance before she answered. "I do not know.. but I intend to find out."

Riding crop slapped against the camel, with that sting of pain she instructed it to speed up. Not once, not twice, but three swats of that leather did the trick. Nayun continued to swat at the animal as they sped up and broke away from the group. She could hear Dawn's voice yelling out her name from behind, but she would not stop.

Nayun was only four minutes behind, yet she could not see Freia in the distance. She saw her trail and followed it easy enough. She grit her teeth in confusion as she rode on. How did she travel so fast? Nayun questioned in her thoughts. Only when the trail curled around a dune of sand did she finally see where Freia had gone off too.

Blood had littered the sand. And with every brush of wind did it slowly disappear little by little beneath it. She had expected to see an injured Freia, but the only bloodshed she could see was all about the blade wielding woman. Men, a few women, scattered about. Their mounts, except for two horses, seemed to have been struck down as well.

When her camel groaned, the Adennian turned about and faced Nayun with unamused eyes. "What - are - you - doing - here?" She said with almost a snarl in her voice.

Nayun dismounted and pressed feet to sand. ".. Who were they?" She questioned instead of answering Freia's own.

Freia did not answer at first. But after some seconds of pause, she finally parted her lips to speak while flicking her bloodied blade to the side; scattering more blood upon the sand. She then moved to return it to its sheath. "Bandits. What you saw was the reflection of their spy glass. I thought this journey was kept secret, but it seems someone has a loose tongue."

The woman named Freia looked about. She seemed on edge, perhaps thinking that there could be more looming within the very sand. She then began to look through the personal belongings of the fallen. A few pieces of paper discovered and brought to the woman's eyes, but they were soon discarded off to the side.

"Nothing.." Freia sighed and shook her head. The Adennian moved for one of the two horses and grasped hold of its reins. "It looks like we've gained two new travel companions." She mounted the horse after tying the camel too it. "Take yours." Nodding over to the second. The one Freia rode upon was chestnut brown, while the second held a more spotted white to it.

Nayun did as Freia had before mounting her horse. Then gently kicked heels to its sides to instruct it to move.

"The caravan would have stopped.. We'll catch up to them easy enough." Freia's hand rose up and gestured Nayun to follow.

Nayun turned her horse around and followed behind the older woman.

"The reflection. Good eye, sister." Freia said. Offering the girl a nod.

Nayun returned it, but would speak none. Their trip back to the caravan was a quiet one.

The first thing Nayun had seen were the giant obelisks that were lined up before the city of Settesh. They stood proud and tall, as if a testament of unyielding resolve against the air and storms that raged across these sands. Nayun raised her eyes, the very tips of the giant structures were blocked by the setting sun that hovered above them.

"We'll be there by nightfall." Matthew said. Nayun caught the smile on his lips as he spoke those words to the girl who rode beside him. Dawn. He then turned, looking to Nayun and offering an upnod - as if attempting to include her into the conversation.

"I can't wait..! I want a bath first.. Miss Freia says their water is sooo clear." Dawn chimed in happily. The two began to speak back and forth between one another, but Nayun had no interest in their conversation. Talks of baths and fire breathers were below her level of care at the moment. She kicked her heels into her steed and broke forward -- passing between the two speaking. Dawn gasped up, not expecting Nayun to do such a thing, and Matthew only laughed out.

"She must really want her bath!" He called out from behind her.

Nayun pressed forward. Leaving the two behind riding up to where she had last seen Freia.

"Where?" Her one word question spoken not to the Blade Witch, but to the man who rode her horse instead.

He offered her a look, then shook his head. "She left some time ago. Went on ahead to scout, she's possibly already in the city now.." He looked longingly to the obelisks that guided their way. "Have you been to Settesh before? A lovely city, it can make a man forget how bloodthirsty they are when called to arms."

The horse Nayun rode upon shook its head and let out a snort. The girl offered it a soft run of her fingers through its mane as she spoke. "Yes. Once, four years ago.. I did not see much of the city. My stay was limited to the palace, private sands, and the King's sea." The King's sea was not a sea -- but a river. They only called it a sea since Settesh, and the desert, held no other water source.

"You know it's no sea." The man commented with a smile and a wink.

Nayun spotted this. She paused and stared for the longest of time before she forced the edges of her lips to perk and form a smile in return.

"It is a snake. That was what the old King told me." Nayun then kicked her heels into the horse once more and sped off for the front lines of the caravan.

The Desert City of Settesh

The desert sands turned to large square-stone road. They were no longer out in the wastes. No - they were under the protections of the past Kings, or that was what the man she rode beside said. Beyond the obelisks were mighty statues of King's past. Many holding the weapon they were remembered wielding. A spear in many, a sword in some. Only one held a lone bow, and it was not a King -- but a Queen who reigned for a short period of time when her father could not sire a proper male heir. Nayun liked her. She looked strong.

"A bow kills faster than a spear." The man, who Nayun now knew as Clide, said. He pointed up to the statue of the Queen when Nayun looked to him with confusion.

"You like her? She reminds me of you Adenna women. Always with your chests out and chins up. It's really something to admire."

He wasn't Adenna born. A knight from another part of the realm -- but a trustworthy friend of the crown. He had been under their care for the last twenty years of his life. He was strongly built, though chubby around some edges. He liked to smile - that was one thing Nayun could tell. He always looked to her with a kind gaze and a bright smile on his lips. He had called her child once, but Nayun was quick remind him that she was a woman grown.

"Adenna women are strong." Nayun nodded in agreement.

"The strongest! You'll make a fine warrior. I can see it already. The way you trained with your blade at camp was inspiring, M'Lady." He nodded and smiled. Always smiling. Nayun did not understand the king words of a knight, so she took them as fact.

"I thank you. I try my best to practice with my sword as much as possible. With every swing, I become stronger." Nayun then blinked and peered down at her horse.

"What is it, child?" Clide said. Then quickly spoke up once more. "Ahh. I apologize, you are a woman grown."

Nayun looked to him. "Yes. I am a woman.. but a Princess cannot be a warrior. My packs are filled with dresses, not armor." Why she spoke of such depressing things to this man - she did not know.

"The Siovanui Seirichi is a Princess, yet she still fights." He chuckled as he said this.

"But she does not wear a crown.. Princess by blood.. I am not - things will be expected of me." Nayun gripped tightly at the horses reins.

"King Daichi was known for breaking past the front line and engaging his enemies in combat before his own men could draw first blood." Clide said. Nayun listened to his words and watched his smile.

".. King's of Adenna.. Princess's of Adenna.. I am to be a Princess of Settesh. Their women stay behind while their men fight." A flash of anger filled her face. Nayun looked back to her horses bobbing head.

"Could you tell me what happens when a wolf is placed within a herd of sheep?" The man commented. Clide looked away when he asked this question, leaving Nayun to stare at his rounded cheek.

Nayun stared - and stared. Silence had taken the both of them and seconds turned to minutes. She was trying to figure out what he had meant. Why did he change the subject from King's and Princess's to Wolves and Sheep?

"Would the wolf became a sheep?" Clide spoke up again.

Nayun was quick to answer with her own words. "No. The wolf would kill the sheep. Wolves can never become sheep. One is predator, the other is prey."

"You are the wolf, Lady Nayun." The smile returned as he looked to her. "You will be standing with these Settesh women, but that will not mean you are any less of a warrior." He then winked. "Fight.. but don't scare the sheep too much. White fur can't hide blood."

Nayun looked back to the white furred cloak that laid against the back of her saddle.

"I am the wolf.."

I am the wolf.

She stood before the King of Settesh dressed in the clothing of their women. A long silk gown that wrapped about her form and was tied tightly together by a large band of cloth. It squeezed tightly enough to make her breathing slightly strained, but she had dealt with it the best she could. The only thing that may be seen as strange upon the girls form was the fact that she wore her wolf pelt cloak. The head of the skinned wolf hanging over her own; casting a shadow over the upper half of her features and only allowing her mouth to be viewed. Her lips were held tight as few around her spoke.

"Nayun.. it has been some time. May I see your face?" The King said from his seat upon the sun-gold throne of Settesh.

Nayun would not move for many seconds. Her arms finally gave way when a soft cough left a leather-armored warrior at the right of the giant hall. It was a sphere in shape, with the King stationed in the far back. A warrior was stationed at every curve of the wall, and they surrounded the small party of travelers who stood in the middle -- upon stone-tiled portrait of crescent moon with two crossed blades.

Those slowly moving arms reached to grasp hold of the wolf-head hood and pulled it back so she could allow the King to see her face. Makeup adorn her features. Her nose looked somewhat smaller because of it -- as well as her slanted eyes appearing wider. Her gold painted lips pursed tightly against one another, but she remembered that she was told to smile. So smile she soon did.

"Yes.. that is the girl I remember. Your red eyes, your black hair.. Yes -- this is the Nayun. Sister of Queen Nayon, and family to King Havelast Dagger Sasc.." The King said. Her raised his hand and gestured.

"Take the girl. Kill the rest."

There was a clatter of weapons as each guard of Settesh moved. Poised, ready for action. Some pulled blades -- others spears. The tips of those piercing weapons aiming straight for the small band of travelers as they began their slow creep toward them.

"I should really apologize, Nayun. But this is vengeance for the actions of King Rahea and King Victor during their reign.. Why they had my father assassinated, I do not know. But you will make a fine hostage and a reminder to your Queen and King that we do not forget nor forgive in the desert."

Assassination. Nayun hadn't heard of such a thing. The King's father was killed from a fishing wound that soon became infected. He succumbed to the fever during the night. That was what she was told during her trip across the desert It was what Clide had told her. He told her how the people of Settesh mourned for eight days and eight nights -- one for every God and Goddess they held dear; making sure that their King would pass into the afterlife.

A guard had come from behind. Nayun felt his arms curling about under her own as he drew her into his clutches. The sudden touch caused her to trigger into a burst of rage. She screamed, she howled, and the man tried his best to control her. He twisted left and right, swayed even, in his attempt to subdue her. During this, Nayun found herself stilled by a voice in the crowd.

"Because he spoke of war against Winter Hill." Clide said.. Yet it was another voice that left his lips. His body shifted, changed. He was no longer short and rounded -- he was tall, and soon feminine. The clothing that the man had been wearing clung to her form to the point of discomfort, but she seemed to show no care while pulling a blade from out of thin air.

"and Winter Hill has ley lines my Lilith desires." Fattened cheeks sucked in and face took on the warrior's beauty that was Freia.

There was a flash, and what followed was screams.

All out panic had taken the throne room. Spears reached for bodies to pierce, blades crossed from all about, and the cries of the dying filled the air. Nayun could only watch in silence as Freia danced her dance of death. Blades held within gripped hands to carve through one, only then to meld together and create a spear to catch the chest of another.

Freia had not been the only one fighting. The discarded weapons of the dead were gathered by the others of the condemned party and they quickly set into motion their assault alongside the Blade Witch.

Nayun struggled once more. She was being dragged away while the sounds of the fleeing King filled the room.

"KILL THEM! KILL THEM ALL!" He bellowed out in anger.

Nayun grit her teeth and gripped her left hand. Those metal fingers shaking from the pressure brought to them, but that was for good reason. Her wrist twisted and a soft click was felt throughout her arm. That swing-blade flew free from its hiding place along the side of her arm, and in doing so ripped into the guard who seeked to make her his captive. He howled in pain and let go of her instantly, but returned to try and subdue her once more. Nayun twisted about -- it was no longer tactics but survival that fueled her swing. The bladed weapon etched across the air and ripped up along the mans neck, and cleaved straight into his jaw to part it in half.

Blood oozed and his breath gurgled along with it. Nayun screamed in annoyance.. her blade was lodged into his upper mouth and well into his skull. The girl was forced to press a slipper covered foot to his chest to sloppily pull free her weapon. It must of caused enough strain in her arm to make moving her fingers impossible, but she could still move the limb. She tested this theory by slaying the next man who came for her from the left. Less sloppy, but a cut across the belly would do that.

It was a blur. As if time really did stand still. Her heart was racing, but she felt none of it as she turned about and looked to the fight all around her. Matthew laid dead on the floor.. and it was then that Nayun realized -- Dawn.. where is Dawn..?! The thought alone had her screaming out in heated anger.

"Nayun!" Freia's voice boomed over the remaining yells of battle. Nayun quickly looked her way and was given her answer. Dawn was with her, close by and within her care. It was only then that she realized something -- the battle was over well after it begun. All around them laid the dead or dying. The Desert King of Settesh laid dead as well. A blade lodged in his chest.

".. What ha--" Nayun began, yet her voice was halted by Freia's words.

"No time. You, you, and you." She pointed to two spear wielding men and a woman who held two swords. She then pointed to the doors. "Find the Prince. We still have a wedding to attend to.. and if you see the Queen on your way, be a dear and slit her throat." There was a smile on her lips when she said those words; all while tracing a thumb across her throat.

The two men and that single woman nodded their heads. The woman took charge of the small group, and the lead. They made way for those doors. A sun carved on the right door, and the moon on the left parted ways to allow them passage into the winding corridors that made up the castle of Settesh.

"Never thought you'd be a Queen overnight, 'ey - Nayun?" Freia laughed. As did the others in the crowd. All except Dawn, who was quickly running over to Nayun.

Nayun stood there in a daze. Confusion had overtaken her. Why did they seem so happy? Battle craze, that was it.. a warrior of Adenna laughs in the face of danger and enjoys the feeling of enemy blood over their skin. She could not even find the strength to wrap her arms about the clinging Dawn. The blondes own arms squeezing her tightly. The sounds of her sobbing met Nayuns ears. It was then that she blinked and finally looked over to the young girl who cried against her shoulder.

"I'll be outside.. The rest of you, stay with them." Freia instructed. A cheer sounding out between them all.

"May the knowledge of Liltu guide you." The Blade Witch said with a mighty grin. "And the blades of Adenna lead you to many victories this night!"

Nayun was hurried along through the lit halls of the castle. Dawn still clung tightly to her, sobbing and making their efforts of a speedy escape somewhat difficult. The sounds of battle echoed behind them, and Nayun could only wonder what Freia would do. How can she fight a whole city..? This is madness.. we are all going to die. Filled her throats. Dying in battle was a great thing, but the uneasy feeling that she felt throughout her stomach was not for her own life -- but the girl who clung desperately to her.

"Here, in here!" One of the men in their small party returned from scouting ahead. The four of them quickly followed after. They hurried into a room and the door was sealed up behind them. Items were placed in its path. A dresser, a bed, many other items to hinder those who were following after them.

It was in here that Nayun heard the sounds from outside.

The Adennian turned her head toward the source -- a balcony at the other side of the room. While one of the men stationed himself by the barricaded door, the other two had already made their way onto the balcony and were laughing at what they saw.

".. Why did this happen..?" Dawns shaken voice met Nayun's ears. The dark haired girl looked to her friend, yet she could not find the words to answer her question.

"Come.." Was all Nayun could say. Leading the girl along to the balcony and the laughing man who stood at it.

"It was over before it even began.. They should leave fighting to the strong! Look at them, they run like scared little cats!" One of the men, a balding man who looked to be in his late thirties, yelled out from over the ledge in a taunting voice.

The other only laughed again and pounded a palm to his comrades shoulder to show his agreement.

Nayun could only watch in silence at the scene before her. The Desert City of Settesh was built around four corners with a giant fountain in the middle.. The Castle at one end, close beside the King's Sea and the lush green it provided, the entrance at the other, and two large streets at either side that split into many others. At each of these four corners stood a portal.. and from these portals came warriors of Adenna.

"There, can you see her?" The bald man said. Nayun found herself momentarily distracted by a waving hand in front of her face. She followed the pointing gesture to the small dot of a person who stood within the middle of the four points. Light etched out from her and struck into each of those open portals from time to time. She was indeed the one channeling their continued activation.

"The Blade Witch. It'll be soon now, you can bet on it. That Phoenix is going to light up the sky."

How right he was. In the distance Nayun could see each of those portals growing thinner and thinner, than closing after the last remaining warrior flooded through it. All the collected energy that was used in the portals creation were channeled back around the figure who stood in the middle of the four points. It pulsed, it caused the air all around her to flare up like a fiery inferno..

There was a giant flash of light then, and soon the image of an eye took shape over the horizon.

The two men roared with laughter.

"You owe me ten gold!" The other man, who was younger and only had one eye, said. "The Eye of Lilith! I knew it! The Ninth could never handle something like this!"

The Eye of Lilith continued to shine even in the sunny hours of morning. Nayun and her company had kept to their room the whole night. Watching the battle from their high perch and staying relatively safe; though her companions disliked that and made many comments about how they wished they could join the fight.

Dawn had finally fallen asleep, it was only then that Nayun calmly pulled the girls arms away and left her in the corner to rest. Nayun did not find sleep easily, not when there was so much on her mind. She spent most of her time pacing back and forth about the room.

"You're going to wear out the floor if you keep that up." The man who kept guard beside the barricaded door said.

Nayun looked to him with narrowed eyes then stopped her pacing. Her slipper covered feet led her over to the balcony, where she had to wave her hand about to fan away the wispy smoke of the cigar the two watchers shared.

"Has there been any change?" Nayun's small voice rang.

"Nope.. Looks like everything is over. It wasn't much of a battle." The bald man said, passing the cigar to the other.

"Not a battle at all. I saw a whole line drop to their knees and throw their weapons.. I wouldn't of showed mercy." He exhaled smoke as he spoke and handed the cigar back.

"That's why you suck at politics.. Think of it as cleaning house. Anyone who's a fool enough to raise a blade to Adenna falls, anyone smart enough to kneel can live to see another day. It's smart." The cigar was passed yet again.

The other took it and held it between clenched teeth. "Smart, but where's the honor in smart. I wanted more blood." He puffed smoke and moved to pass it back.

It was Nayun who ended their little game of pass the cigar by taking it between her own fingers and pressing it to her lips.

".. I see." would be all she said after a long exhale of smoke. Nayun still could not grasp the thought of what happened. It was too fast, too odd. How did it come to this? She tried her best to think on the information that was given to her. The King spoke of an assassination, the Blade Witch spoke of ley lines; but all of this paled to the images Lilith had shown her.. and the words she spoke.

War will come, and his men - your men, will paint the desert red and give time for Adenna to be warned. The horns of battle will echo across the dry air, overpowering the sounds of clashing steel and the wails of dying men.

"I'm more of a sun-lovin' man. You know? Shiji Kumos winters just don't cut it.. Getting too old."
"Get used to the sun then.. We'll be here for a good while."

One of the many conversations Nayun heard as she walked.

Dawn had stopped crying the day before. It had been three since the bloody battle within this city. All Dawn did would utter a soft word every now and then, nod her head, or stay quiet. Nayun couldn't help but feel uneasy about it. The girl seemed comfortable enough to repair her false arm, but acted as a ghost of her former self. Freia had spoken to them personally, she had told Dawn she did well that night -- that she did what many girls within her status could only dream of. It didn't seem to sway the girls emotions.

Time heals all wounds. She's young, she'll come to her senses soon enough. Freia had said after taking Nayun off to the side.

Not only that. Freia had told her many things. With the mission complete -- there was no need to keep secrets any longer. Nayun closed her eyes and sucked in a slow breath through flared nostrils. Even the air was dry.. Everything was just too dry.

More conversations were heard, yet she ignored them. Nayun replayed the words Freia had told her. Over, and over. Once she stopped at a bench that overlooked the King's Sea; she finally settled down to sit and reflect while looking to the slow flowing water.

"Basically.. we knew this from the start. The Eighth caught wind from sources within Settesh that the King was planning on holding you hostage, disguising it as a wedding proposal between his son and you. Instead of meeting them head on into battle, she decided it would be best to keep things.. Simple and clean." That caused Freia to snort out a laugh.

"Clean enough. White fur can't hide blood, but I bet you know that now more than anyone." She smiled and offered Nayun a wink. Something that reminded the girl of Clide.. No, she had masked as Clide; so she should say it reminded her of Freia?

"Winter Hill wouldn't of let us pass if our war banners were raised. The trip around would of cost too much time and supplies. It was easier to send us in and make the connection between cities."

"I do not understand.. if I were held hostage, my sister would not care." Nayun couldn't understand. There were too many holes in this story. She shook her head and looked back to Freia. "Why?"

".. Family is family, Nayun. Your sister might not act like it, but she does feel for you." Freia took a sip of her tea, then continued. "But I won't lie.. The farm lands of Settesh is, how can I put this.. Winter isn't exactly our greatest friend. The King was not only going to take you as a hostage, but there were talks of cutting off trade with Adenna. We just couldn't let that happen. We have many mouths to feed and this winter will be a long one if Shiji Kumo has his way."

"An insult.. on top of another." Nayun said softly.

"Precisely. Stopping trade, holding you as his hostage and marrying you off to his son? He overstepped. Just because Adenna has been in a time of peace does not mean we are weak. Many were itching for a fight, and our recently deceased royalty gave us a nice scratch."

"And Dawn..?" Nayun still could not sway the thoughts of the poor girl from her mind.

".. Incentive. To keep you from straying. That I'll apologize for." Freia had look to be about ready to sip from her tea. But she set it down instead.

Nayun kept silent. ".. She will heal. She became a woman that night." Then nodded her head.

"Spoken like a true Sister of Adenna." Freia gave her a bright smile. "Or should I say.. Lily of the Valley. The Queen would of liked to say that personally, but I'll have to do for now. I'm no member -- but welcome."

"But.. she said in name only." Nayun questioned. She would hold the title, but not the rights.

Freia raised her chin and looked down upon Nayun. "You completed your trial the night the Desert King fell. But if my word isn't enough.." The woman pulled free a letter from the pouch that hung from her right hip. She held it toward Nayun, who then took it without delay.

She looked it over. From it's blood-soak stained back - most likely from the battle within the throne room - to the clovered cross ink seal that kept it pressed closed. This was a letter from her sister.

"We're still not done here. It'll take some time to win the people to our side. We slaughtered a good number of their forces, many others yielded.. but some continue to fight. They will be flushed out of the city in no time. We'll be keeping half of our men here, and you'll stay with them." It was then that Freia took another sip of tea.

"But, why..? My part is done. I should return to Adenna." Nayun furrowed her brows.

"I told you in the throne room.. You've become a Queen overnight. We can't win the people just like" Freia snapped her fingers. "that."

"The Prince is their only connection to their beloved King. A King that almost led them to all out war, might I add.. We'll be sure to keep telling them that as time goes on." The Blade Witch shook her head. Pausing to take another sip from her tea. "You'll be his Queen, but your real mission is to simply play the part.. We have to stabilize the region. The calmer things become, the better.. Or worse -- some around here didn't even get a chance to unsheathe their swords." There was perhaps a small sound of disappointment in Freias voice.

She then chuckled. "I'm not expecting you to become with child overnight, neither is the Queen."

"Then.." Nayun paused. The words caught up in her throat.

".. Become Siovanui, Nayun. Don't give up your dream." Freia said softly. A longing look took over her eyes while she peered within her tea.

"My sister.." Nayun stood. Her palms pressing to the table.

"Will be in Adenna.. and you in Settesh.. and this conversation of Siovanui never happened between us." Freia rose as well after setting her teacup and plate onto the table. "I have a wedding to plan and a priestess to threaten. I'll be taking my leave now."

"Quick. Which of their Gods did you like?" Freia stopped and look back.

"N'elu.. the Dancing Goddess of Fire." Nayun said after some time of pondering. Pondering, and waiting to see if Freia would simply walk away. When she had not, there was no more reason to delay her. She knew why the woman had asked. There were eight Gods and Goddesses of the Settesh faith -- and each one had a set time where a couple were to be married under their watch.

"I'll be sure to tell the priestess that.. A sunset wedding, how nice."

"What say you, representative Zelron of Ryuani?" The voice behind the question was from a well dressed black-skinned female. Her prominent cheekbones and high brow showed obvious signs of elven heritage -- though such a thing could've easily been found out of one only looked beneath her headdress to view pointed ears. She wore a long, flowing gown of white. Golden chains hooked at one another wrapped loosely about her waist, and matched well with the many hoops that adorn her arms. She spoke from her position at far right of the small table that only few others sat at - at this very moment.

".. Liltu's involvement was.." The man known as James Zelron seemed strained with his answer. He wore robes of simple red and black. His taste in gold and finer dress seemed, unlike the Drow, non-existent. He could be mistaken as just another normal mage if he were to walk the streets alone. He sat at the tables left.

James brought up a hand to push long strands of brown hair behind an ear as he leaned over the table. ".. Troublesome. If the council of three were called upon before this.." His hand rolled about. He spoke as if he didn't want to say the word that rest upon his tongue.

"Justified attack." Lilith, the third who sat at the tables middle north, spoke out from her ever-present smiling lips. "Adenna is an ally of Liltu. The Tower could not simply stand idly by while our friends were--."

James halted Liliths words and spoke his own.

"It is a hostile take over, Lilith.. Ryuani cannot--"

The favor was then returned by the White Witch of Liltu.

"Cannot do what? Hide behind their wall and gossip of how barbaric we are? If I recall, you already do just that. If only your great grandmother survived the war.. she would look down on you with such pity, child."

The table shook then as James slammed a clenched fist onto it. "You will not bring my families name into this. I am here as a representative of Ryuani."

"The Eighth speaks the truth. She would look down on you with pity." The drow smiled.

"Nebura stands beside Liltu in their decision. The majority rules, representative Zelron." Her smile only grew when she spoke those words, as did Liliths own. The pale woman bowed her head to the Nebura ambassador and then looked over to James.

"Perhaps it was too soon.. You lack your fathers tongue." Lilith chuckled softly.

James clenched his teeth. But then tried his best to calm himself by sucking in a slow breath and running fingers through his hair. ".. If it pleases you, Lilith.. I would like to stay within this city and make sure things do not turn out..--"

"Like another Old Ryuani." Lilith's smile only grew larger.

James bit his tongue and kept silent. But finally nodded his head while giving a forced smile. "Yes.."

"I will be staying as well.." Lilith bowed her head at the Drow's statement as the woman continued to speak. "but, onto more important business. This ley line you've.. recently.. discovered west of the city.." There was a hint of a smirk when she said recently. Her long finger pressing gently against her lips. "Liltu will share whatever information is gathered from it.. am I correct?"

"Of course. We are friends, after all." Lilith's shoulders bounced as she chuckled once more; this time her own echoing along with the drow woman's that followed.

James only looked between the two women and sighed. ".. I take it this meeting is over."

"You're coming in too strong. Speed is a good thing, don't misunderstand.. but it can also be your biggest weakness." the man from Ryuani said.

Nayun had met him the day before when the closed door meeting between the Three Greats happened. She was left wondering just what the talks were about, but she knew her place was not to ask questions. Even if she were to become the Queen of Settesh -- there was things best left away from her ears. Place a blade in her hand and she would be content enough -- which was why she enjoyed the feeling of clashing weapons with the man before her.

He was stronger. Faster. Better. And it made Nayun feel wonderful. Every thrust of her blade, he parried. Every cut, he would move out of its path like a ghost and strike her in return. He made her own swordplay seem like a joke compared to his own. And Nayun felt, with each failed blow and strike returned to her body -- she felt alive.

"Again. This time watch me.." James said. He prepared himself, readying for Nayun to come.

She would do just that. Dashing across the private training grounds that were found within the walls of the castle. Three walls, it had been left open in the rear to allow access to the King's Sea that curved like a serpent about the city's eastern side. She could see it behind the blade-guarded James as she advanced on him. This time, she indeed was watching. Before she had been the first to strike - yet this time she waited and feigned what looked to be an upward slash. When she saw his reaction, she put a stop to it and ducked low. Attempting to push past the man and draw her practice blade across his side, yet all she feel was the clashing of his own weapon against her own, and soon enough the feel of his shoulder pressing into her body and forcing her way.

"You can't trick a trickster.. But good. You tried to adapt to my style. Impressive." He smiled while wiping sweat from his brow.

"It's like you can tell the time just by how hot it is." James sighed out then. His wooden blade brought to his shoulder. "We shouldn't keep doing this. You have a wedding to prepare for.. Those old hags must be furious." His words, not hers. Yet Nayun knew who he spoke of the second those words left his lips. The older priestess' of Settesh who were brought in to prepare her for the ceremony.

Nayun looked down to her boot held feet, then to the shadow of the man who stood before her. ".. One more.. I would like to try once more."
She didn't want this to end. She didn't want this to end, only to have it replaced by fitting into a dress and being forced to play the part of a wife to be. She clenched that wooden blade of hers and set into her own ready stance. As if she were no longer asking if they could continue - but forcing it upon her practice partner.

James set his blue eyes upon Nayun's reds, then slowly nodded his head. "Fine. Who am I to deny a future Queen?" He brought the blade from his shoulder and took his own stance. "This time. Hit me."

The scene had changed from outdoor practice to indoor annoyances. Nayun was indeed made to wear a dress and play the part of wife to be -- but for now, it had been in practice form. Nayun sucked in a breath, something that felt even more strained with the way that cloth bounded tightly at her waist. They spoke of wanting to make her appear more curvy, more like the Moon Goddess that she would be representing on the night.

The Goddess of the Moon: Settok. She, along with the God of the Sun: Shatesh, brought life to this world and with it gave birth to the other Gods and Goddesses that helped them reign over the lands. Nayun would be Settok. and the Prince Ren - he would be Shatesh in this ceremony. Becoming living embodiments of the Gods, that is what the people believed; once their marriage was completed under the watchful gaze of N'elu and the sunset realm she held power within.

"He will remove his veil, and you shall do the same.. then you take his hands and stare deeply into his eyes." One of the old women, Nayun simply called her the instructor, told her.

"I remember from yesterday, you do not need to tell me again." Nayun's monotone voice spoke softly throughout the room. The women looked to one another in distaste, but they did not bring words that reflected their expressions.

Nayun easily found herself agitated as time went on. She disliked this dress, it limited her movement and she could not breathe properly. How any woman would dress like this was beyond her thinking -- so she simply labeled them fools and left it at that.

"I want to be let out of this. Now." She began to fidget. Grasping at the bindings and trying her hardest to free it from her. It proved to be a useless trask, and pulling one end only caused it to tighten even more. One of the women moved to take hold of her, but had made the mistake of coming from behind Nayun. The girl quickly shoved back an elbow to strike the woman against her brow, sending the old woman hobbling back while the Adennian turned about and grit her teeth in anger.

"Do not touch me!" Nayun screamed.

Her voice quieted while she watched the scene. The other women gathered around the fallen one.. and it looked as if she were bleeding. Nayun tried to take in another tight breath, but it only caused her to become further angered.

Manners.. she must remember her manners. The rage boiling within her from the touch had subsided some. Enough to allow the girl to clear her head enough to speak apologizes. ".. It is the heat.." An excuse she heard the White Witch say the night before after becoming angry with one of her handmaidens. ".. It boils the blood and quickens it to anger."

"Please remove this from me.. and I will see to your wound." She finished. And waited.

The women looked to her with uneasy eyes. Eyes Nayun had seen many since the joint Adenna and Liltu occupation of Settesh came into being. They looked to one another and gave slow, unsure nods. Two moved for Nayun and muttered words of warning before they touched her form. Nayun, mentally prepared for their touch, stood tense while they worked the tight wrap. Second after second did she feel it become less and less of a strain against her waist.

"Thank you.." Nayun said after they stepped away. The girl sucked in a long, deep breath and held it within her lungs -- then slowly released it. Basking in the feeling of it all.

"It's tight.. but, you do look beautiful." Dawn said.

They stood within the room - alone - only the two of them now. Nayun had ordered the others to leave after their tasks were complete. She knew they would return in a few hours time. It would be sunset in only four more hours. Everyone was preparing for the wedding now, and all Nayun had been tasked with was waiting. Waiting to be dressed, waiting to be ushered to the statue of N'elu, and waiting to become a bride and Queen of Settesh.

".. I'll be wearing one as well. Dark orange, it's supposed to represent the setting sun, I guess.. That's what they told me." She was speaking more. Nayun liked that. It caused her unnecessary worry when Dawn was quiet. So with her speaking again, came a more calming feeling for Nayun.

"Your makeup is nice.. They did a good job." The blonde girl said. Nayun peered at her mirror image. It looked so much unlike her. Silver painted lips, darkened eyeshadow, fake eyelashes and odd markings upon her cheeks from the old-writings of Settesh culture. How she hated it. She wished it had been Dawn who painted her face. Candy had spoken of her looking like a clown, but Dawn had appeared to enjoy the work she put into making Nayun `beautiful` those many, many months ago.

"You look more beautiful than I.. they say I lack curves." Nayun said. She looked over herself within that large mirror. Turning left, then right. She pressed hands to her muscled front, then pressed them to her hips. "I am built to be a warrior." She nodded.

"You're still growing." Dawn came from behind. "I'm going to touch you, okay..?" Nayun nodded again when she heard that. Dawn pressed her hands to Nayun's waist, then ran her fingers over her hips till they found the fabric of the shorts Nayun wore.

"You'll look more like Queen Nayon in a few years. You're just not there yet." Dawn smiled over Nayuns shoulder after she said that.

Nayun looked to their reflection. Focusing on the smiling girl who stood behind her. "You're smiling. Have you recovered?" Nayun spoke of Dawn's brush with death and her break down as some sort of sickness that could simply be cured by swallowing a pill.

"I.. um." Dawn's voice became unsteady. Nayun heard this and slowly moved about. Dawn released her and took a step back. The blonde girl brought her hands together in front of her and grasped at them tight.

"The Eighth spoke with me.. she told me the reasons and why everything took place.. The King was a bad man, and bad men deserved to be punished. He wanted to hurt you.. and.." Dawn's words caught in her throat. She tried her hardest not to cry but it just wouldn't stop. Warm, salty tears ran down her cheeks as she pressed a hand to her mouth.

"Matthew is dancing in the stars with all the other heroes of the past.. He died an honorable death protecting me.. The Eighth said that I should mourn him with a smile and thank him every morning when I wake.. but, it's hard.."

Dawn was expressing her feelings before Nayun.. yet the girl could not understand it all. Why was she crying when Matthew died an honorable death? This reminded her of when Dyarhk had died and how Miss Corea reacted. Why mourn the loss of a hero -- he is with the others in the stars now. It was a great honor to be among them. Nayun stood there in silence. She watched as Dawn ran fingers under her eyes to try and wipe away her tears.

Nayun thought of what to say. She must say something. It was the proper thing to do. She reflected on her past experience with Miss Corea. She had asked her why she was crying. When she said it was because Dyarhk had died, Nayun had spoken her mind on the subject and found herself slapped across the face and told to leave. She did not want to suffer the same here. Dawn had struck her once when she tried to kiss her during an argument - to quiet the girl, so she could possibly do it again.

Dawn looked uneasy around the room. Sniffing back off and on while fidgeting with her clothing. She wiped at her eyes every now and then while flexing her face muscles and working her jaw. All this time Nayun stood there as still as a statue -- and just as silent as one. All this time of silence had been her attempting to piece something together. Something to say. She reflected on Dawn's words only moments before.. and worked them as her own.

"I will thank him every morning as well.. for saving your life." Nayun nodded slowly.

Her chin rose some and her arms held close at her side. She mentally prepared for something to come her way. What she thought would be a slap instead turned into arms wrapping tightly about her own. Dawn squeezed Nayun into her chest and pressed a chin to the top of her head. She liked it.. Interesting. Nayun thought. Her smaller, but more muscular arms rose to wrap loosely about Dawn's own body to offer a hug in return.

"Thank you, Nayun.. Thank you." Dawn said, squeezing Nayun tightly. Her head turning so that her cheek now rubbed against Nayun's locks of short black hair. The girl then released Nayun and backed away. Wiping once more under her eyes, but this time offering Nayun a smile. "I brought my tools.. let's fix up that arm of ours and make it nice and pretty for the wedding."

"The Prince. Have you seen him yet?" Dawn pulled her lip liner away as she spoke, then resumed tracing it along her lips while awaiting Nayun's answer.

Nayun hadn't felt the need to answer the question too fast. She had been watching Dawn apply her makeup in silence across the small table. Every second of it -- more and more did she wish that the girl could have done her own face as well. She took a brief glance at that large mirror and thinned her lips at the sight. Settesh women and their fashion.. I look like a fool.. Nayun protested in her mind.

"No, I have not.. Freia said before leaving that the Eighth was keeping him hidden away in her chambers." Nayun gave a tilt of her head as she spoke. "A hostage.. to make sure the people did not attempt rescue. Or so I've been told.."

".. Father would tell me stories of brave Knights and Princes.. and how they would save the Prince and he would remove their helmets, and how he would fall in love with the Knight after peering into her eyes." Dawn stopped applying her lipstick and paused some seconds before continuing. ".. He isn't a bad man like his father.. is he?"

"The Prince is far too weak and spends his time within the libraries, I've been told. He is no threat." Nayun was sure of that. She reached for a grape and tossed it between parted lips to eat.

"Not with a sword, but what if he is with his mind?" Dawn placed her elbows against the table. Her wrists bending so that her hands folded upon one another. Her chin resting against those hands while she looked to Nayun. ".. It's a little scary, isn't it? Marrying a boy you don't know."

"It is a duty I must do. If he schemes against me, he schemes against Adenna. We've flexed our military might before him and his people.. If he has grown smart by reading those books, then he should realize his people have no chance. A smart Prince protects his people."

"They are going to be your people too, you know.. " Dawn frowned a little when she said that.

"That is true." Nayun hadn't thought on that much. She paused in her attempt to eat another grape. ".. They will be my people as well.." She furrowed her brow and dipped her chin. They will be my people.. she thought. Nayun would marry into their culture, be their Queen, it would be her they look to alongside the Prince. But all of this would be under orders as Lily of the Valley. To keep Settesh within the grasp of Adenna and to ensure their continued cooperation with the Crown.

"A Queen protects her people." Nayun nodded her head. "That is their duty."

"Hm.. Dawn, personal assistant to the Queen. How about that?"

Time continued to pass between the two. Conversations came and go. Small talk to pass the time -- and small talk to occupy Nayun's thoughts away from the wedding that loomed closer with each passing second. She had started to pace about, but Dawn's continued questions of possible titles had caused her to stop and think.

"No." Nayun shook her head. She did not like any of them -- and for obvious reasons. Each of them reflected on the fact that Dawn would be staying within Settesh. Though she disliked the thought of the girl leaving her side, she just could not see keeping her within the city as safe. Adenna is where she should be. With her Mother and Father. Under the protection of the two Siovanui.

"Are you sure you do not wish to return? The region is still unstable.. It is not a safe place. Many are still foolish and think they can push us from this city." Nayun believed in the might of Adenna and her own strength. They will hold this city, there was no doubt in her mind about that; but Dawn was weak. She could simply be walking and an assassin could take her life only because she held Adennian blood.

".. It'll be okay.. once they create the portal system here--" Dawn's voice grew quiet when Nayun broke into her words.

"You do not know? The portals cannot be set up. Word has come from Winter Hill.. they accept our occupation of Settesh, but have made it a point to ask that the region not be added to the system." Nayun stepped closer to Dawn. Her hands reaching out to take hold the comb Dawn had been holding. She disliked how her hair looked, and went about combing it the right way -- or the way she viewed as right.

"They believe it would allow our warriors to quickly surround them if war were to come. The Eighth said this is good. They fear us more now."

Usually Dawn told her to stop, but the blonde was too busy thinking about what Nayun had said. ".. Then.. I can't just go home whenever I want? I'd have to travel across the desert and.."

"Yes." Nayun cut into her words again. She combed through those locks of blonde hair, parting at the middle of her scalp and having them split about the younger girls shoulders. "That is why you should leave after the wedding. The only remaining portals back to Adenna will be closed in two days."

"But.. Who will repair our arm?" She reached up and almost possessively grasped onto the false metal-worked arm of Nayun's left.

"I can send for your father once you return to Adenna.. It will be best if he takes your place for now."

Dawn stood up almost instantly when she heard Nayun speak those words. Nayun was forced to retreat back a few paces. Her face lightly showing signs of confusion.

"No! It's our arm..! I made it for you.. me.. Not father." Dawn's expression was one of hurt when she said that.

"You could die." Nayun said in a flat tone. Dawn had only turned fifteen some months back. She might have seen battle, she might be considered a woman now -- but Nayun weighed the choices and it would be best for Dawn if she left.

"I could.. but.. this is all I am, Nayun.. This is what Father trained me to do. I have nothing else.. if I go back to Adenna, then what? I put a piece of me in that arm. Our arm. I can't just walk away.. I'm scared, Nayun. Really scared. But I don't want to leave you." Dawn inched closer. Her fingers gripping against upper arms after she crossed them over her small chest.

Nayun could hear it in her voice. She spoke the truth. Her words trembled when she said she had been scared. She knows she could die.. Nayun thought. Then turned her head so that she would no longer look upon the girl.

"You are a woman grown.. Do what you want." It sounded hurtful coming from her lips. Uncaring. Dawn fell silent when she heard them.

In truth. Nayun felt calmed by this. Dawn would stay, she wanted to stay -- she would be here at her side. She could lay beside her as she slept, she could walk these halls with her. She could and would be her connection to Adenna.

"Personal assistant to the Queen.. that will be your title." Nayun's eyes set themselves on the girl after she turned her head. Dawn was smiling, and soon nodded her head when she saw that Nayun had looked her way. She ventured forward and motioned with her hands. She reached, but did not touch. There was a pause. When the blonde saw that Nayun took notice of her reach, it was only then did she take hold of her right hand. She gave it a gentle squeeze.

"Remember? When we left?" Dawn said. "Wolves stick together."
