Dakota Steele

Every guy's gotta have a dream.

For Dakota Steele, he had a dream that he simply never had the chance to even attempt to realize.

It was something that had simply remained on the backburner for most of his adult life, even though he'd always had the capability of realizing it. Whether it was cocaine or whiskey or women or kids, there was always something that he had to support which kept him way too busy to give this long hidden dream a second thought.

His stint on Radio RhyDin had allowed him to come as close to his dream as he'd ever known, and when that came to an end, he was all the more motivated to finally put everything he had into this dream.

The simple fact was, music was in Dakota Steele's blood. It ran in his family's blood, going back many years. It was well known throughout Kota's circle of friends that he was a pretty good guitar player, and not a half bad singer either. He moved Jade (and many others) to tears at their wedding when he sang his vows to her. He had developed a close friendship with Rhy'Din's original rock star herself, Chase Rosewinds. His twin sister, Aiyana, was also a musician. Her musical ability ran a bit deeper than Kota's, as she played quite a few more instruments. She played guitar, piano...even a a bit of drums. She had a pretty good voice as well.

Earlier this year, when Jade left on her mission, Kota had a LOT of time on his hands. He even attempted to find her at one point, but didn't realize at the time that it was an impossible task. He ended up returning home a couple of weeks later. There was little for him to do but live his life and bond with Claira.

Problem was.....when Claira went to bed at night, Kota became a restless soul.

Dakota Steele was living proof that idle hands truly are the devil's playground. If given a chance to become restless or bored, he was going to find SOMETHING to do to occupy his time. This was a man who still fought the demons of his old addictions. That was simply a cross that he would have to bear for the rest of his life. There was never absolute victory over drugs. You simply lived life one day at a time, and chalked up each clean day as a small victory.

But fortunately, this time around, Kota had someone in his life who continued serving as his motivation to stay clean....two people, actually. A goddess of a vampire named Jade, and her beautiful daughter named Claira.

One particular night, Kota took Claira to Rhyannon and Dean's place to spend the night, and he headed for his sister's place, with his guitar in tow.

She hadn't played in a few years, but they spent most of the night jamming, playing and singing some of their favorite stuff from back home.

They didn't sound half bad when they sang together. Actually, they harmonized quite well together. Funny enough, as the night progressed, Dakota got deeper into a bottle of whiskey, and the more he drank, the more he seemed to find his voice as a singer. He'd long had a bluesy raspiness about his voice, and whiskey seemed to help fine tune it to a quality that he didn't even know he possessed.

As Kota continued to wait for Jade to return home, he began spending more time with his sister, working to perfect this sound that seemed to work for them...very much a fusion of Mississippi delta blues, southern rock, and country. As had become his routine, he'd stop every so often to take down another shot of whiskey, seemingly improving his voice.

Finally, one particular night, Kota stopped the jam session to ask Aiyana a rather simple question.

"Why the hell don't we actually do somethin' with this...? Let's find a few folks and start us a band.."

Natchez was born that night.

Aiyana was quick to suggest that Dakota (or Shikoba, as she continued to call him) HAD to be the lead singer. He was hesitant, but she insisted that his voice had a sound that was unlike anything else out there right now. She eventually decided on alternating between keyboards and guitar, and agreed to occasionally take a turn behind the mic.

They would need a lead guitarist, a bass player, and a drummer...who all shared the same musical vision that they did.

The word went out quickly over the next few days, and the Steeles must have listened to hundreds of musicians...many talented, some not so much, and a few that simply stood above the crowd.

Within a week or so, Natchez was complete. Dakota and Aiyana had found three musicians who seemed to fit perfectly into the mold that they wanted to create with this band.

Weeks of practice turned into months. These five musicians learning to play together proved to be more difficult than any of them could have imagined. Dakota was a perfectionist with the music. He knew the sound he wanted, and it often led to brutal cursing matches with his bandmates, his sister included. But at the end of the night, the music always prevailed and healed any lingering hard feelings.

Little Claira was always their biggest fan. She'd sit in on practice and clap and sing along with the songs that she picked up on.

The gigs slowly began to trickle in for Natchez. They'd play anywhere and everywhere that had a stage and a place to set up their equipment.

Well, eventually, Jade did return home. The reunion was sweet and tearful. Needless to say, she was pleasantly surprised to learn of her husband's new venture. He had done everything from own a tattoo parlor to host a radio show, and he was finally having the chance to live out his true dream of fronting his own band.

On any given night, you'll find Natchez in a bar somewhere in Rhy'Din, with their lead singer looking every bit like the rock star he always imagined himself to be. He was usually in a ratty vintage t-shirt promoting one of his favorite bands from the past, such as the Allman Brothers or AC/DC...along with a ripped up pair of jeans, his favorite black cowboy boots, and a black bandanna wrapped tightly around his head. He's also let his hair grow back out quite a bit...although it's still not the length it was at when he first met Jade. And he was NEVER without his black acoustic guitar.

They'll play various songs throughout the night, always trying to change the set up a little each night. There were some cover songs, and there were some originals that he and Aiyana had written. One constant always remained though. The show HAD to open with a cover of the song that he considered his theme. He'd come out on stage, strumming his acoustic in rhythm with the band, step up to the mic, and let his vocals take over.

Bobby played his guitar on the hard side of town
Where it's hard for a poor boy to find the money
He had dedication, he had the heart and soul
Somehow knew he was born to play

People said get a real job support your family
Cause there's no future on the road you're takin'
He never said a word, the dreamer just kept on
Late at night you could hear him say
(he'd say)

I'm gonna be somebody,
One of these days I'm gonna break these chains
I'm gonna be somebody, someday,
You can bet your hard earned dollar I will

The road was a struggle,
Took him ten years to the top
And now he's number one on the stage and the radio
Still he cant believe how people come from miles around
When it seems like only yesterday
He would say

I'm gonna be somebody,
One of these days I'm gonna break these chains
I'm gonna be somebody, someday,
You can bet your hard earned dollar I will

Bobby played his hometown, one full moon August night
When He heard a voice in the front row singin
It was a sandy haired Rebel boy with the same ole hungry eyes
He Looked up at Bobby and said

I'm gonna be somebody,
One of these days I'm gonna break these chains
I'm gonna be somebody, someday,
You can bet your hard earned dollar I will

You know i will yeah yeah

I'm gonna be somebody,
One of these days I'm gonna break these chains
I'm gonna be somebody, someday,
You can bet your hard earned dollar I will

Oh yeah
You can bet your hard earned dollar I will

Off to one side of the stage was a bottle of Jack Daniel's that Kota would always take a swig from repeatedly thoughout the night, and somehow, his voice continued to hold up, if not improve as the show went on.

After bringing the house down with some blistering guitar work to end the night, Natchez would take their bows and make their way off stage.

But yes, there always had to be the encore.

Less than a minute after leaving the stage, the band would return to their respective places. A sweat drenched Dakota would bring a stool with him, take a seat with his guitar in his lap, and slowly begin to play the song that was both for him and his Jade, who was usually in the crowd with a proud gleam in her eye.

I'm just a singer
A natural born guitar ringer
Kind of an old clinger
To sad old songs

I'm not a walk behinder
I'm a new note finder
But my names a reminder
Of a blues man thats already gone

So I started drinkin'
And took things that messed up my thinkin'
I was sure sinkin'
When she came along

I was alone in the hotlight
Not too much left in sight
But she changed all that in one night
When she sang me this song

"Hey baby, I love you
Hey baby, I need you
Hey baby , you ain't gotta prove to me your some kind of macho man
You wasted so much of your life
Runnin through the dark night
Let me shine some love light
Down on a blues man"

I got so sick of speed
And all the stuff they said I was needin
If I was to keep pleasin' all of my fans
I got cuffed on dirt roads
I got sued over no-shows
But she came and took all that old load down on this blues man

"Hey baby, I love you too
Hey baby, I need you
Hey baby, I do get tired of this travelin band
I'm over thirty years old now
Nights would be cold now
If you hadn't stuck it out
With this blues man"

I'm over thirty years old now
Night sure would be cold now
If you hadn't stuck it out
With this blues man
