The house was eerily quiet; silent, All the lights were off, so it was dark as well. No cats, running around, no Sadie cooking in the kitchen?no anything. Charlotte had sent all the help home.
There on the kitchen counter was a folded yellow letter with Brian?s name written on it in cursive. Beside it was Charlotte?s beautiful engagement ring attached to a silver necklace. There was also a simply crystal goblet...filled with chocolate pudding. It had a black satin ribbon tied around the base. A reminder of what was.
Dearest Brian,
I think you know what this is. I?m sure you?ve noticed some things missing around the house. We?ve both been avoiding the inevitable and I just can?t ignore it anymore. Last night was?awkward to say the least. While you were gone I went to visit my brother and he asked how I was. I told him everything. I explained how I couldn?t be the wife you needed me to be and you couldn?t be the husband I needed you to be. We both had too much on our plates and jumped into a marriage we weren?t ready for. While it is tearing me apart to write this, I know it is for he best. I hope one day you see it that way too. We can?t be together anymore. We?re just fooling ourselves if we think we can go on like this. We lead separate lives while married and that is just not fair to either of us. Jathara invited me to come live with him and I?ve taken him up on that offer. I won?t be back, Brian. Probably not until after the baby is born. I?m wouldn?t dream of depriving you of your child, but for now, I just need to be alone.
I love you more than life, Brian Ravenlock. Know and dwell on that. I?ll miss you dearly, my heart of hearts.
Love,
Charlotte Evangeline Ravenlock
P.S. Do what you want with that ring, its yours, Brian. And Eliza Kitty is with me. I hope you understand.
And there truly wasn?t a trace of Charlotte?s things left in the house. Literally everything of hers was gone.
No, wait. She?d left one thing. On the bedside table, there was a little picture frame surrounding a sonogram and a little white note with a bow that read, ?It?s a girl!?
And so it was. Charlotte Evangeline Ravenlock was gone.
