She simply appeared with a slight flicker in the livingroom of her brother. It was dark, implying he wasn't present. Charlotte sighed and set her bags down moving towards a small side table and reaching for a candle. She blew on the wick, igniting a flame. She smiled. Magic was wonderful.

Before long, she had many candles lit and found herself sitting in silence. She didn't like silence. She thought too much when something wasn't happening. She didn't have to wait very long, it turns out, because she soon heard voices approaching the door.

Male and female, laughing, whispering. Charlotte suddenly felt nervous. The door swung open and in stumbled her brother and what appeared to be his girlfriend. Or lover for the night. She was wrapped around him, giggling, nuzzling his cheek. Charlotte remained silent, waiting patiently for Jathara to notice. It was quite amusing, actually, watching Jath fumble around to close the door while keeping his hands and mouth on the pretty blonde in his arms.

"Ahem." Charlotte was smirking.

Jathara held up his arms and jumped backwards at the sound of her voice, away from the blonde. "Holy..."

"You're married?!" Was the astonished reply from the blonde.

"Hell no! That's my sister, but I don't know what she's doing here..." He sent Charlotte a death glare. She just snorted. "What are you doing here, Charlie?"

"I figured you, being my loving and hospitable brother, would let me stay here a while."

"Couldn't you have at least warned me?" Jathara gave a nervous glance to the other woman. "I'm kinda busy."

Charlotte rolled her eyes and shook her head, moving to stand. "Fine, Jathara. I'll go find someplace else to stay."

"Aww, sis, come on, I-"

Charlotte held up a hand to silence him, then bent to gather her bags. "I'll be sure to stay out of your hair while I'm in town, too." And with that, she left her brother and his 'friend' to their own little selves. She knew of only one other place she'd be welcome in this section of town. The Elder's.

Charlotte knocked quietly and then waited. She stood on the doorstep of the brownstone, fingers now clenched tightly around the handles of her bags. There was nary a light on in the house - and absolutely silent. She hadn't been to visit Islandi in years and only hoped that she still lived.

Islandi was an old, haggard woman; wrinkled and blind. She had long white hair that came down past her waist, but was usually wrapped up in a turban (sort of). Her eyes sparkled and told of her many years and immense wisdom.

A lamp illuminated the window closest to the door. Charlotte sucked in her breath, rather confused as to why a blind woman would turn on a light. The door creaked open...and Charlotte blinked. This was no old woman. Rather, there stood a rather tall, well built man - shirtless - and equally as confused as she was.

"Oh," Charlotte took a step back, whispering in the late hour of the night. "I'm sorry, I was looking for Elder Islandi."

The man scratched his bare chest and gave Charlotte a once over. Why was a pregnant woman out here all alone? "This is the home of The Elder. Do you seek shelter?" His voice was soft, thick with Bethesdian accent, but perfectly enunciating every word.

"I wish to speak to Islandi. I am a friend."

"I have lived with my grandmother for many years, now, and I have never seen you before." The bare chested man stood a bit straighter as he eyed the tiny pregnant woman.

"I have been away for many years. Please, I wish only to spe-" Charlotte's words were silenced by the sound of Islandi herself.

"Who is there, Olanis?" The old woman was seen hobbling down the hallway, hand running along the wall so she'd know where she was going. She wore her hair down, which almost blended right in with the floor length white nightgown.

Charlotte, despite her condition, bowed quickly, averting her gaze from the Wise One. "Elder," she whispered. "It is I, Charlotte. Daughter of Jonathan Cross." She remained bent in the uncomfortable position, her head dipped low in respect, until Islandi touched her head.

"You have not come to see me, child." Islandi's voice warbled in her old age as a wrinkled hand lifted Charlotte's chin so she could gaze upon her face with blind eyes.

Charlotte cupped the old woman's cheeks and smiled. "I had gotten married, Elder."

Islandi smiled back, bright white eyes dancing. "And you are with child; I read it in your aura. You are shining so brightly." The wrinkled hands dipped to touch Charlotte's belly. The old woman gasped. "She has a beautiful spirit."

Olanis gazed between the two women, lips pursed. "I suggest you come in, woman. The night is unsafe." He put a hand on the small of her back and ushered her through the door, then stooped to pick up her bags.

The parlor was lit by the streams of sunlight pouring infrom the large bay window's, illuminating the white wicker table and chair set in which Islandi and Charlotte sat that late morning drinking tea. Orange Spice and Peppermint tea were the choice flavors and the intoxicating vapors wallowed in the air, mingling together with the sound of light, airy laughter. It was, perhaps, the happiest Charlotte had been since her arrival in Bethesda. The past two weeks had been spent with Charlotte busying herself around Islandi's home: cleaning, conversing, and learning how to cook.

She went for walks through the market and now that she'd been living with Islandi and Olanis, the people were not so wary of her. She was welcomed by most and accepted, at least, by the rest. There were even a few women who had offered their help with the kids should Charlotte ever decide to move back to Bethesda for good. Charlotte had to admit...it sounded rather appealing. But, she had told Brian she'd let him be a part of the baby's life.

Oh, the baby. Charlotte found herself wishing she wasn't pregnant. It wasn't the baby's fault, but it complicated things so much. Every kick, every turn, every hiccup was bitter sweet. She loved the child within her, but she was reminded of Brian every time. He was something she wished to forget. Her love would never wane for him, but she wished it would just become a part of her past.

"Charlotte..."

Islandi's soft, weary voice brought Charlotte out of her reverie. She blinked serveral times, her mind swimming back to the present. "Oh...uhm, I'm sorry Elder. My mind was wandering."

"You were speaking of last night, child. Go on." Islandi smiled sweetly and sipped her tea.

"Well, it wasn't anything to write home about, Elder. We just walked and talked."

"You did not return until dawn."

Charlotte flushed. "I promise you, Elder, we just talked."

"He cares for you."

"Elder...."

"He does. I can sense it from his aura - now you need to stop ignoring that."

"I cannot love another, Islandi. I cannot." Charlotte bowed her head, covering her face with her hand. "I have nothing left of my heart to give."

"You do not deserve to be alone, child."

"I'm not alone. I have my friends."

"That is not what I mean and you know that." Islandi set her cup down onto the saucer gingerly and reached blindly for Charlotte's hand. When she found it, she gave it a squeeze. "There is always a second chance for love. It may take time. It may not even work...but you cannot just shut it out."

"I know," Charlotte whispered.

Days later, Charlotte found herself standing on a bridge beneath the stars, overlooking the large placid pond before her. The only light that shone was of the moon; mirrored by the undisturbed water and illuminating both figures.

Yes, there were two. Olanis stood just behind Charlotte, his chest barely touching her back, and hands lightly resting on her shoulders. They simply stood in silence, listening to nature. The crickets chirped loudly in the reeds by the water, letting their melodious tune waft through the night air. Cicada's hummed from the trees and firefly's blinked in the fields close by.

Charlotte's head turned in the direction of a bullfrog's call, smiling softly, then tipped her head back to rest against Olanis' chest. She gave an almost inaudible sigh in content.

Olanis smiled too, dipping his head a bit to rest his chin atop her head. His arms moved to hug her from behind, beginning to rock her gently. "Charlie," he whispered softly.

"Yes?"

"Are you still going to leave?"

Charlotte shifted against him a bit, readjusting herself in his arms. She didn't answer right away because, in truth, she didn't know the answer. Remaining silent, Charlotte simply rocked along with him, keeping her gaze on the inky black water that reflected the night sky. After a time, she spoke. "I wish I could stay, Olanis...but I have family in Rhy'Din. I have a life there. And my daughter deserves to grow up knowing her father."

"Then let me come with you."

Charlotte fell silent. This...this wasn't supposed to happen. She didn't intend for this to be a fling, in fact, she hadn't intended to let it go this far at all. Brian was still so special to her, but Islandi's words had moved her.

"Charlie, I'm not asking you to forsake your husband's memory. I only ask that you let me share myself with you. I don't know what has happened since you came, but mark my words, woman. This was no accident."

Charlotte ceased the rocking motion and reached up with her hands to grip his arms which were still around her. "I don't understand you, Olanis. I don't."

"What do you mean," he replied questioningly in a baritone rumble.

"There are plenty of single women in this town. All much fairer and younger than I...and yet you choose me. I have such baggage and...and kids, no less!"

Olanis was quiet for a while too, seemingly mulling things over in his head. "I don't know how to answer that, Charlie. I don't have all the answers - nor do I understand why this has happened. But Charlie," he paused then, lifting one hand to tip her chin up to look at him. "I'm glad for it."

Charlotte smiled warmly; getting that silly sensation in her stomach as her knees nearly buckled. His head lowered and Charlotte held her breath, closing her eyes. Such sweet torture was anticipation - her heart beating erratically within her chest. He was close, she could tell, his breath upon her lips. Only seconds remained, now....and then it happened. It was a passion filled kiss that ended as quickly as it had begun - chaste - yet....satisfying. Content.

Happy.

"You're going to wake Islandi."

Charlotte scowled at Olanis in the darkness and shifted around again beneath the sheets, making the four post bed frame creak and groan in protest. "Oh," Charlotte said in an irritated fashion. "Like she doesn't already know."

Olanis had to chuckle at that, but stopped immediately when Charlotte burst into tears. Olanis mentally kicked himself for being insensitive, then reached for her, running his hand soothingly along her shoulder. "Hey, shhh...." Olanis hushed her softly. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to laugh." Hormones, he suspected were the cause of her break down.

"Its not you." Charlotte whimpered and ran a hand along his smooth jaw. "I just miss my kids and my niece." She pouted as her other hand wiped away some stray tears. "And I miss my Moor Cats."

Olanis smiled. "Is that all?" Then he bit his lip when she frowned at him for poking fun at her again. "Sorry. I told you we could leave as soon as you wanted to, Charlie."

She nodded and started pouting again, fighting another onsought of tears. "My back hurts." She shifted around again, getting frustrated.

"Turn over, Babe." Olanis waited until she was facing the wall before beginning to rub her back. His broad, calloused hands kneaded into her creamy, soft skin; massaging her lower back. They stayed silent until they fell asleep - with Olanis rubbing Charlotte's back until he could hear the soft, even breathing indicating sleep.

Two hours later, Olanis awoke to find Charlotte awake and sitting on the edge of the bed.

"Charlie?" Olanis got up too, and knelt behind her on the bed.

"My back hurts again."

"It woke you up?"

"Yeah."

"How much longer until your due date?"

Charlotte was silent. The now dull ache in her lower back pulsed and throbbed. Maybe he was on to something. "Two weeks."

"Well maybe you're in labor."

"I hope not. I don't think I'm ready for this."

Olanis kissed her cheek, then got off the bed and turned on the lamp. "You're going to be a great mom." He put on his shirt. "I'll go get Islandi."

About a half an hour later, Charlotte, Olanis, and Islandi all sat in the living room.

The lamp in the far corner of the room was ablaze, leaving most of the room fairly dark. Its rays cast an eerie glow on everyone's features, creating shadows on their faces.

Charlotte lay curled up with her head in Islandi's lap. The old woman softly petted Charlotte's brown hair. Olanis draped a blanket over her.

"You are scared," Islandi stated matter-of-factly.

"Terrified."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Of course you do. Do not lie to me," Islandi responded softly, but sharply.

?I?ve seen births, Elder. I?ve delivered many infants. But I?m so frightened. What if something goes wrong? I?ve had so many things happen to me during my pregnancy. What if-?

?Hush. You will do fine. You are strong.? Islandi nodded sagely, continuing to pet her hair.

The next few hours were spent in Islandi's parlor, lying on the couch in silence.

Charlotte found the prospect of labor daunting and didn't look forward to it at all. Islandi prayed blessings over her and Olanis rubbed her back and attended to her every beck and call.

Hours and hours she waited. She didn't wish to leave Islandi until the birth was close. The contractions got stronger and more intense, but were still a good 8 or 9 minutes apart.

The time to leave was getting closer and Olanis prepared their things for departure. Charlotte forced herself to get up and say goodbye to Islandi. There were tears of course, knowing that with Islandi's old age, another visit might not be able to happen. Then, as another contraction wracked through Charlotte's back and lower body, Olanis scooped her up into his arms, brushed a soft kiss over her forehead and disapparated from the room.

Moments later they both appeared in Charlotte's entryway. Olanis dropped the bag, but kept Charlotte in his arms. She was clinging to him tightly, moaning softly as the contraction peaked.

Olanis was slightly startled to look up through the livingroom doorway to find a woman with purple hair asleep on the couch with a little boy draped across her chest.

Cassandra

Date: 2006-09-12 17:20 EST
Cassie woke up almost immediately and silently. She blinked up at Charlotte and the muscled hottie holding her, but didn't move so that she wouldn't wake Aiden. Eyes widened once she realized the situation, and she sat up slowly, cradling the little boy.

Her voice was a hushed whisper when she spoke. "If you can carry her up to her room, I'll show you where it is and put Aiden down in his bed, then I'll take care of her while you run and get the midwife."

She stood, holding Aiden close, who had cuddled against her bonelessly as children do when they sleep, and led the way, moving up the stairs slowly so that he'd be able to keep up without banging Charlotte into a wall or anything. She directed him to her room, where the bed was waiting, clean sheets and quilt, for Charlotte's arrival. Once she saw the man settling Charlotte down carefully, she slipped across the hall to Aiden's room and settled him down on his bed, pulling the covers over him and kissing his forehead before hurrying back to Char's room.

She moved to take Charlotte's hand and lean down to speak. "I'm here, it's going to be okay, and that guy is going to get the midwife. Tell me what you need me to do."

Olanis didn?t say much, in fact, he remained silent. A curt nod was given to Cassie ? having noted that purple hair and realizing this was the infamous Cassandra that Char always talked about. The man?s muscles did indeed bulge as Char was hefted up the stairs behind Cassie, towards the bedroom.

While Cassie tucked Aiden into bed, Olanis took Charlotte to hers. Char finally began to relax as the contraction ended. It had been like this for hours and she knew that there were still many more to go through before the actual hard labor. Olanis retrieved a few extra pillows from the closet and propped them behind his woman, smiling down at her.

?Comfy??

Charlotte returned the tired smile and nodded. ?Mmm yeah.? She snuggled down into her blankets, turning on her side. ?Want to bring me that little book over there?? She pointed across the room to her dresser where an address book lay. Olanis retrieved the item and handed it over, watching in silence as Charlotte leafed through it.

Steele, Dakota and Rosie.

Char brightened a bit at finding the correct address and pointed at it, turning the book to Olanis. ?This is where the midwife lives. Its not that far away, actually. I?m sure you?ll be able to get her quickly.?

His large hand closed over the book as he took it from her, then bent to brush a kiss across her lips. ?Should I hurry,? he asked quietly in his sexy, deep voice.

?No. Well, I mean I want you here?but it?s not like the baby is coming at this exact second. Tell Rosie that the contractions are still 7 minutes apart.? Charlotte smiled and readily gave another kiss as he dipped down for another, then watched as he disappeared through the door.

Cassie came in shortly after Olanis left. ?I?m here, it?s going to be okay, and that guy is going to get the midwife. Tell me what you need me to do.?

Charlotte nearly started crying. It had been so long since she?d seen her niece and she?d missed her very much. Charlotte unburied herself from the tangle of blankets and mountain of pillows to give Cassie a HUGE hug. ?I missed you so much!? Then after snuggling back into her comfy position on the bed, Charlotte grinned. ?And that guy you saw is?.my boyfriend.? Charlotte flashed a cheesy grin to Cassie.
