"Charlotte!"

It was the third time she had heard her name, so she opened her eyes. Darkness greeted her. She was still in bed, Jean purring loudly beside her. "My god," she mumbled, rubbing her eyes, "what the bloody hell is going on?"

"God damnit woman, if I have to call you one more time."

She froze. "Who's there?" she whispered into the darkness. It was silent...all for Jean. He was still purring away. She slowly slipped out of bed and grabbed a candle. She waved her hand in an arch over it. "Luminos." A flame arose.

Carrying it careful over to the desk where she heard the voice in the first place, her eyes scanned it. A large bowl of water sat beside a pitcher. She peered inside. "Oh my god!" She nearly dropped the candle; there was a face in the water!

"Took you fucking long enough. What the hell were you doing?"

Charlotte covered her mouth and crept back to the bowl, peering leerily inside of it. "Sleeping." She was terrified. "Damien, what do you want?"

"For you to get your ass here now. You're needed.

"But I thoug-" he cut her off.

I don't give a damn what I said before. You owe me your life, Char. Now do as I say or so help me..." she cut him off this time.

"Damien. We're through. I've helped you so many times. My debt is repayed." Her eyes were flaming with anger.

"So be it." There was a loud crack, Jean woke up and hissed, he knew somethign was wrong. In an instant he was leaping off the bed towards Charlotte, but he was too late. Charlotte had vanished, leaving only the candle behind which had dropped to the floor and extinguished itself.

She was again lying in the darkness, except this time, she wasn't in a cozy bed or a house for that matter. She was on a dirt floor in a heap. Her robes were bloodied, her hair a matted tangle and her face screwed up in pain, even in her sleep. Her labored breathing and the scurrying of rats was all that could be heard...mayhap the occasional drip-drop of leaking water somewhere.

A door at the opposite end of the room was bolted shut from the outside, a small observation window at the top. The air was dank, cold and drafty. A rat scurried over to Charlotte, sniffed her a few times and began nibbling on her ear. She was jolted awake, screaming in agony. Its wasn't the rat who caused the piercing scream, but the sudden movement of her body. It ached everywhere. She was certain a wrist was broken, a few ribs maybe and her cheek bone. The room echoed with her racking sobs and screams. "Please!" she begged to anyone who could hear her. "Please! Please just let me go! I can't do it. Isn't this proof?!" Her voice was hoarse and raspy. With tears pouring down her face, Charlotte resigned back to the floor, laying in such a way that would cause the least amount of pain to her body.

Damien had taken her through a force-summons, hit her repeatedly for not coming when asked and then forced her to retry summoning the spirit beast. Things had gone terribly wrong. Instead of going peaceably into Damien like it was supposed to, the beast lashed out and tore through Charlotte's body. She was able to maintain the hold on her body long enough for the demon to pass through, but it had done its damage. Damien was very displeased and threw her into the cell. Hours later, he forced her again--this time threatening to kill Brian if she didn't try. After yet another fail attempt, Damien accused Charlotte of purposely screwing up. He gave orders to his five disciples to..."make her understand the importance." They took their time with the torture...her screams drowned out by the relentless laughter and goading.

Now, here she lay, her own blood mixed in with the dirt. The cuts and bruises covering her body throbbed in pain, excruciating pain. "Brian..." she whispered through her tears. "Oh Brian...."

It was all she could do to keep her grasp on her body. The real Charlotte struggled to maintain its presence...she drifted in and out of concious. All throughout the night, Damien forced her to make contact with the spirit, but was finally coming to realize that Charlotte was not strong enough. This made him angry...he started ordering his men to torture her every hour on the hour.

The heavy metal door creaked open; Charlotte immediately began to whimper. She instinctively tensed up and began to shake in fear. "Please..." she squeaked softly, a lone tear rolling down her muddied cheek.

The man was silent as he knelt beside her. Charlotte's back was to him and she heard him set something beside her head. She squeezed her eyes shut, praying that she'd survive and somehow get back to Brian. That's all that sustained her as it was. The faint hope of seeing him again. She had to hang on...she couldn't let him down.

Something wet and warm brushed against her cheek. She winced and wipped her head away, though it caused her great pain. "Please..." she managed through her steadily quickening breaths. A broad hand supped the cheek opposite the one he had touched in the first place. The warm rag was again placed on her cheek and the man proceeded to clean her wounds.

Her brown eyes fluttered open again and stared up at the man. "Cross? Jathara Cross?" She could hardly believe her eyes. Charlotte stuttered a great deak trying to talk to him...it was hard to do with literally a broken face. "But...weren't..you...I mean....you're his...?"

Jathara looked sadly down at her not speaking, still gently wiping awake the mud and caked blood on her face. She flinched when he ran the cloth over her broken cheek bone and he paused. "Charlie, I...." his voice broke and his gaze fell from hers.

Charlie. She hadn't been called that in years...in fact, Jathara was the only person who ever had. He'd been the one who had convinced her to leave the group in the first place. Said it was getting dangerous and was planning on leaving himself. In fact, they had left together. He got Charlotte a job at their old school and he went on an exploration journey. THey had both gotten out...or so she had thought. "Jathara..." Charlotte looked up at him, blinking back the sudden onsought of tears.

Slowly, the world swam out of view...the last thing she saw before unconciousness consumed her was Jathara's face.

Brian made his way into the Inn and literally walked right into hello. There was Renna laying waste upon a group of men in the middle of the Inn, blood was all over the floor and body parts were flying to boot. A quick glance about the Inn showed no one else seemed to be present, but Renna was easily fighting enough for five people. Brian dropped his bag, grabbed his sheathed swords and walked right on in.

Renna took little notice of Brian as he began to literally chew on one of her attacker's necks as if it were a side of beef. Blood ran all over thge man's body as he screamed in pain. Renna then dropped her current victim and turned to watch another attempt an escape out the front door. with a growl, she launched her "shadow" arms at him and literally gutted him from behind leaving little thought that he would even survive for a few seconds. Stepping over body after body, Brian came upon someone who was still alive and trying to get the drop on Renna. Dropping his swords, Brian came up behind the fool and snapped his neck with one quick motion of his hands. Using his foot Brian kicked the dead man's body aside, and heard a voice from the far side of the Inn.

"Charlotte said you were a competant one."

Brian looked the newcomer as he wiped the blood on his hands from the previous kill along his pants and reached for his gloves. While he slid them on, he eyed the newcomer and replied. "I am capable of many things, if you have harmed Charlotte you willl see exactly what I can become." With that Brian made his way slowly towards the newcomer. He eyed the man up and down trying his best to read him, it was difficult at best. For all purposed Brian had to assume this was Damien, given the fact he didn't lead the charge himself and only showed after the others were dispatched. Brian went to say more and was stopped literally by the look on Damien's face. Brian turned and looked at what caught Damien by surprise. There stood a bloodied man in robbes holding a bloody and bruised Charlotte in his arms. The man then collapsed to the floor with Charlotte in his arms, neither seemed to be moving.

"Jathara!? What are you doing here? You traitor!"

Out of seemingly no where Renna charged back into the fight, screaming loudly as she reared back and used her morning star on Damien, send the spiked ball towards the side of his face.

"Renna, NO! He is baiting you! Look out!"

But it seemed luck was on their side. As the star connected and literally crushed the side of Damien's face sending the robed man down in a heap of his own blood and robes. Brian turned and ran to Charlotte as he came to a slide at her side and took her from Jathara's arms. "Charlotte! Charlotte!" Brian yelled and got no reply. Her cheek swollen and looked to be broken, her wrist twisted some ungodly way as well. Various burns and marks along her arms left nothing else to the imagination. All the sudden the men who were dead began to vanish, Damien himself was fading as did Jathara. Along with them went their weapons, including a sword that was embedded in Renna's leg. Slowly Brian stood to his feet with Charlotte in hand, and looked to Renna as she took began to slowly rise. "Im taking Charlotte home, I'll be back." With that Brian left the Inn and used a portkey to teleport directly to the Villa.

Brian rushed into the Villa yelling for Emeralda, but what Brian didn't realize is that she had the weekend off and wasn't even in town to begin with. Brian moved Charlotte gently into her room and laid her upon the bed, she still was not responsive and Brian was getting nervous. He cursed loudly a few moments as he gathered what salves and medical supplies he had. All the sudden he heard a tiny voice from the door way and turned to look, his eyes widened as he instantly recognized who had finally arrived.

"Jes!!" Brian cried out, as he reached for the little Taru and literally dragged him to Charlotte's bed side. "Jes ya gotta help her, she got hurt badly. I don't think my ability will work here. Please Jes!" The small Taru looked Charlotte over once and sighed. "I can't Raven-sama, I didnt bring any of my tomes. But Nee-chan can!" as the little Taru's eyes seemed to sparkle. Jes, pulled from the bedside and ran down the hall yelling "Nee-chan! Neeeeeeee-chan!" and in moments he returned and by his side was a familiar and much missed sight. Brian spoke her name softly, as he stood and moved while she made her way into the room. "Edea... Sister."

The Elvaan female made his way into the room, his eyes piercing and her stature commanding. She was thinly built and stood roughly 6 feet and 2 inches tall, yet she carried herself as if she were half that height. She smiled at Brian, and kissed his cheek and then took a knee next to Charlotte's bed. Jes ran back into the room carrying two tomes and setting then next to Edea. The little Taru then grabbed Brian's hand and lead him out of the room. "Nee-chan needs time to work, remember? She patched you up enough, how could you forget. Your friend will be okay, I promise!"

As they made their way towards the living room Brian heard yet two more voices in the kitchen area. He and Jes rounded the hall and could see the a tail swishing playfully back and forth and attached to that tail was the Mithra Red Mage Atheala, and next to her was her husband and Brian's cousin Narin Hidero-Ravenlock. "Heya cuz, sorry it took so long. We got your summons a bit late, but we are here now." Narin said as he hugged Brian and chuckled. Jes relayed to Atheala what had happened and what Edea was doing and Atheala took off to assist, leaving Narin, Jes and Brian in the kitchen. "So cousin, bring us all up to speed. What kind of trouble have you gotten youself into this time."

Brian's friends had done a dandy job of patching her up, she hadnt woken at all while they worked on her. Meanwhile, Jean stayed close, nudging her occasionally with his big wet nose as if hoping she would wake up and pet him.

It was nearly the middle of the night before Charlotte was aware of her surroundings. Her entire body began to tremble beneath the covers; she was dreaming.

Slowly her eyes reopened. She felt cleaner then she had before, at least her face wasn't covered in blood. Ever so slowly Charlotte managed to sit up. Jathara Cross was sitting in a corner, his forehead resting on his knees.

"Cross..." she said softly.

Jathara's head popped up and he stared at her. "Charlie," he said, crawling over to her. "Are you ok?" A hand reached up to brush a piece of hair from her face. When she pulled away from him he sighed. "Who is he?" He frowned. "You were calling out someone's name in our sleep. A man's name."

Charlotte stared blankly at Cross, it was difficult to manage any expression at all; her face being in so much pain. She refused to answer his questions. She had a few of her own. "You let them do this to me?" Her voice harbored immense pain and agony at the thought. When Jathara didn't answer, Charlotte's body gave a shudder as she tried to supress the sob rising in her throat. "Why," she asked hoarsly.

He was silent for a long time. "I don't know why, Charlie. But I'm not doing this anymore."

Her dreams jumped tracks, it was now several ours after her conversation with Jathara. The others had found them both and proceeded, under Damien's orders, to punish them both. Charlotte was sure she was going to die. A few minutes into the beating, Charlotte just let go. She couldn't hold on any longer....

Her dream jumped again. She was aware of Jathara crawling to her...he had blood dripping from his ears, nose, and mouth. The others had left and Jathara was going to try and return her to Rhy'Din. They disapparated from the room and it all went black.

The dream yet again jumped tracks, but this time it returned to her beatings, playing over and over before her eyes.

"Brian!" she screamed at the top of her lungs through her tears. Charlotte sat upright in her bed, writhing in pain....the dreams were so real. Her splinted left wrist burned in pain, her ribs causing her to scream in agony. "Brian!"

Edea left the room ands approached Brian, Narin and Jeskola. She smiled wearily and wiped her forehead a bit. "Well little brother, she will be fine. Atheala is tending to some stitches and a few bandages. All in all she is fine, but.." "But what?" Brian answered quickly, as he moved to her and assisted her to a near chair. Edea smiled and answered "Well do you know what she is exactly? I mean her bod.." Brian nodded and cut his sister short with a pleasant and most grateful smile as he helped her sit down. "Yes, sister I know. She and I have talked and she knows of me as well. An.. I love her." Edea smiled and nodded sage like to Brian, her eyes held a twinkle as she looked at him. "I know little brother, if you didn't you wouldn't have been moping around Bastok when you last us." Edea laughed a bit as she said that past part.

Atheala entered the living room as well and laughed a bit. "Wow! That cat of your is HUGE! What the hell do you feed that thing? Anyways, so what's the plan tonight? Oh wait, yeah! Your friend is okay, I slipped her something to help her sleep a bit, bit of rolanberry added for kick. Man, she got whooped something bad.. I wonder what." "That's enough Atheala, let it go." Narin said, as he motion for Atheala to join him on the other side of the room. "Sorry Bri, y'know how Atheala gets, kinda like Gorg.. Foot in mouth all the time." Brian chuckled and answered back "It's okay, I am just glad you showed up when ya did. I'm also impressed ya found my place so quickly." Jes came back into the room literally riding Sorreah like a horse, and waved. "That's cause I went sight seeing when I last came here, Raven-sama." Brian just started at Sorreah, the big cat looked completely content with the little teddy bear like Taru on her back and Jes was having a blast. "Raven-sana, Nee-chan this is WAY better than a Chocobo. Can I get one of these." Edea shook her head and laughed softly. "No my little Taru terror, but well see about getting a harness for you to slap on Atheala, instead."

Brian made arrangements for Narin and the others to stay at the old boarding house Briallyn owned. He didn't want them staying too close to the Inn until they knew exactly what everyone else's plans were. They left the Villa and headed back into town and Brian moved back to Charlotte's room and watched her sleep a bit. Then it hit him.. "Renna." Brian rose and went to the living room, and called for Jean. After leaving the Cat in charge, Brian warded the Villa once more and set out for the Inn. Upon his arrival he was informed Renna was no longer there, as he exited the Inn once more, he pondered where she might have gone, and then he recalled the last time he and Charlotte patched Renna up was at the Great Hall, so that in turn was his next stop.

Brian arrived moments later to the Great Hall and found Renna at the entrance in a heap. She had some fresh bandages, but still looked a right mess and of all things she had a pentram etched into her forehead, an to top it off it was seeping with blood. Brian scooped her up and walked into the Hall. "Damn Renna, you're a *&#$@! mess.." Brian walked past the stage area and into the changing area and laid her on a table. Brian then opened his bag of holding and rummaged through it, a moment later Brian shut the door, and locked it. He then began to work on Renna.

Over an hour later Brian left the Hall, Renna was talking once more and looked to have been alright considering what she went through. She and Brian also talked and truth be told it left Brian in a fairly foul mood. Brian walked from the Hall to the Inn stables and secured his horse and set off for home. The sun had begun to set and cast a golden hue to the sky, this was Brian's favourite time of the day, but today he paid it no mind. Spurring the horse even faster Brian had one goal in mind, to get back to the Villa. Soon he arrived and went to Charlotte's room. His eyes softened as he watched her laying there. Her cheek was repaired but still bore a nice sized bruise, and her wrist had to be braced just for caution. She had various bandages on her arms as well, but she did look comfortable. Brian knew she had been through a great ordeal and he wasn't there. That burned deep within him.. He knew she said she was done with Damien, but this was in fact not the case. Brian wondered if in fact they would ever be done with Damien. Brian knelt by Charlotte's side and held her hand gently, as tears welled in his eyes. Lowering his head, as he continued to hold her hand, he softly cried.

Brian cried himself to sleep as he knelt at Charlotte's bed side. He woke about 2 hours later, and rose slowly. Releasing her hand gently, he them leaned to her and kissed her head gently. He then reached over and pet the Jean-Luc and exited the room. Brian made his way into his own room and slid his shirt off, feeling the shirt stick to his body he frowned and knew exactly what the cause was. He moved to a mirror to have a better looked and shook his head in a bit of disgust. Along his arms and chest were several cuts, some deeper than others. Dried blood caked along his arms and body, even the movement of his arms would cause some to re open slightly and cause discomfort. "I'm a fool.." he said softly, as he undressed and went to bathe.

Once he washed off, he looked a great deal better. The scars were still present, some bled out a bit, others were just there. Some even had begn to fade. Brian sighed a silent thank you and began to bandage himself.

"You made a mistake again, did you not?"

Brian lowered his head a moment, and closed his eyes as he heard the voice and answered. "I was wondering when you would contact me."

"You are a fool, you never should have done what you did. That gift is not yours to do with as you please. You lost all rights to that, when you left our discipline."

"I had no choice, there was no other way."

"Then they should have died. You coudln't even handle the consequences. Look at your body! Riddled with scars from that.. that thing! Take heed, do not make the mistake of crossing us again. Do not take matters into your own hands again. You are not a mage by any means, especially since you lost all rights to use any types of magick since you gave youself to that damned artifact. I do not want to have this discussion again, child."

"I understand, Mother."

Brian shook his head, and wrapped his arms in bandages. He hated it when she called him a child and to talk to him that way to boot! Still he knew exactly what she meant. He had no real right to do what he did and if Katharine were about she would agree as well. It was a foolish gambit that luckily paid off. Brian treated the wounds on his chest and put another shirt on and made his way to Charlotte's bedside once more. The previous butt chewing outta his mind as he knelt next to Charlotte and soon drifted off to sleep once more.

"Brian!" she screamed at the top of her lungs through her tears. Charlotte sat upright in her bed, writhing in pain....the dreams were so real. Her splinted left wrist burned in pain, her ribs causing her to scream in agony. "Brian!"

He snapped awake and leaned to her, his arms reaching to hold her in his own bandaged arms. "I'm here! Charlotte I'm here! It's okay, you made it. Kissing her head gently, as he held her, he then spoke in a whisper. "We're alright.. We made it.. You did fine, and you're home.."
Once more tears welled in his eyes, as he continued to hold her.

Charlotte's body shook and trembled as Brian held her. Even awake, the images flashed vividly before her eyes and only Brian's voice banished them from her mind for now.

"I'm here! Charlotte I'm here! It's okay, you made it. Kissing her head gently, as he held her, he then spoke in a whisper. "We're alright.. We made it.. You did fine, and you're home.."

"I didn't think I'd ever see you again." She sounded like she had cotton in her mouth, and under different circumstances it would have been kind of amusing. Her lip was split in two places making it very difficult to talk. Her fingers touched her cheek gingerly as if to show herself that the pain was over. It wasn't happening now. Ever so slowly she began to calm down. Charlotte turned to Brian, blinking at him sadly. "You must think I'm weak." Her voice was barely above a whisper and held all the shame in the world. She rested her head on his, forehead to forehead as her right hand came up to caress his cheek.

Her hand moved slowly down his neck to his shoulder and then softly ran over his arm. When she encountered the bandages she lifted her head. Completely horrified, she asked quietly, "did I cause this?"

"I didn't think I'd ever see you again."

"You must think I'm weak."

Brian held her closely and let her speak. Gently his hand ran through her hair as she spoke and he listened. His eyes closed a moment, as he truly thanked the gods she was alright. Once more he spoke in reply, his voice as soft as her own. "Charlotte, I never thought you were weak.. Your far stronger than I could ever have imagined. An I was afraid I wouldn't see you again, either. I'm so glad you returned. We owe Renna a deal of thanks, she truly came to the rescue on this one."

"did I cause this?"

He felt her hand on his arm, as she asked that last question. He closed his eyes and truly didn't want to tell her the details of what truly caused the wounds on his arms and body. First of all he was just reprimanded for his actions and second he just didn't think she would take it too well at the present time. Gently he kissed her upon her forehead and replied.
"No love, you didn't cause anything to me. I'll be fine in a few days, no worries. You need to rest, I'll stay here at your side."

Slowly she let her body relax, settling back onto the bed. She was freezing and pulled the covers up around her chin and slowly her eyelids began to droop again. She was home and she was safe...the man she loved was beside her and he wasn't going to let anything happen to her again.

She'd chosen to ignore the comment about Renna...it was no secret that Charlotte would never trust that woman.

"No love, you didn't cause anything to me. I'll be fine in a few days, no worries. You need to rest, I'll stay here at your side."

Her eyes fluttered open and a hand emerged from the blankets to grasp the front of his shirt. "Brian," she whispered. "Don't leave me..." she was struggling to stay awake now. "You don't have to sleep on the floor, that's not fair to...." Her body had finally taken over and dragged her into a deep slumber, hand still gently grasping his shirt....it was a much needed, dreamless sleep.

His eyes softened, as he watched Charlotte and listened. "I won't leave you. I love you. Just rest, I'll be here and everything will be fine." He saw her fading and new she was going any moment. He smiled warmly as he felt her hand on his shirt and drifted off. Gently he released her hand, and kissed her head softly and then laid her down once more. Taking up his position on the floor as he leaned against the bed, he too drifted off.
