Alex Ravenlock

But why? he found himself quietly questioning his arrival, just as he stepped through the door of the newest home he acquired only several months back.

A little stupid, isn't it?.. he heard himself continue with, draping the strap of the backpack he wore from the shoulder it slouched upon, and tossed aside to the nearby wall. He had already kicked his shoes off just outside upon the landing. That much out of the way, it paved way for him to traipse amongst the still, quiet setting with a sense of peace.

Never forget to remove the shoes..

Wandering, for what must have felt like an eternity bundled within but a second or two; wrapped like a pickle within bacon upon the skillet, he considered plausible excuses for the reappearance. If, at any place, that one.

"Lingering hope, kid?" Called a voice, slicing away the stale air and startling the tall Ravenlock from his daze. "Ain't here," It concluded, before appearing that of a small ferret arriving from the kitchen. The very direction Alex was only inches from entering.

The lavender haired titan lowered his gaze, first to the sound of the voice, and then that to of which it belonged. Rodrigo had been taking care of the place? He had thought long ago the animal returned back to his home. After all, no master was present to account (or in certain cases, take responsibility) for his actions. Startled? Most certainly. Especially since at no point, nor at any time, did he even sense the presence of something else other than himself within the home. The ferret was regarded with a lifted brow, playing the shock off nonchalantly. Even if but for a moment.

The ferret snorted, whiskers frilly as he moved off in the direction of the wall, and for the main living room. The slow, barely manageable walk signified a deepening cyclone of despair. For the rodent, at least. "Don't worry," It reassured. "It's part of what I can do."

Vaguely lit emeralds, haven't yet to flush the color within the darkness of the pupil, narrowed in both concern and further masquerade against the shock that was underlining. Yet to truly be seen. "I wasn't going to say a word," Alex managed between parted lips, but a whisper upon the chilly air.

Rodrigo bounded up upon and onto the frame of the nearby window sill. As though a cat in a much too small form, he began to grow comfort in his position, awaiting the masters return. Not a word, barely a squeak would he voice or otherwise sound off. A complete reversal from his previous antics.

Alex had to be sure no strings were waiting for him to trip over. Nor pots waiting to clamber and fall, denting a once again pretty face. He was still certain to move on after the small one, disregarding his previous hopes of lounging. Or what he's already made up the excuse of lounging. "So what's the deal?" A fearful question, boad as it was. Yet Alex found his urgings playing against his desire to run. Like that small voice in his mind was screaming for him to do. It wasn't time to split. Especially since even he had been hiding from the vast world. For some time, no less.

Though there came no response. The small creature insisted on staring out of the window, with the small oval head of his perched neatly against the pane of glass. The beady eyes could be noted darting to-and-fro, watching as each passing drip-drip of the small shower that began outside heave from the heavens above, and sink within the earth below.

A quiet sniff embarked upon a journey of echoing within the silence, culling the runny nose within its place. It wasn't typical of the altered human to possess a sickness. He'd entirely exclaim with detail that it was the chilly weather battering the frame-of-choice. "Well, you don't say," He retorted with to the silence. The little that it'd wind up doing, at least.

If there was one thing he couldn't stand while within the presence of another, it was precisely that.

Of course, Alex knew Rodrigo was both wishing he was home, and entirely upset that Aka was still unaccounted for. The little that he has done in hopes of searching, finding, or coming across any medium was, by the furthest stretch, the only thing he could think of doing. No matter the brute strength, or undeniable sarcasm - it wouldn't find the girl.

"I'm sorry, alright? I get that I'm the biggest screw up this side of the planet. If I could fix it, I would." He followed-up with. It was a shaky response that he found himself bitterly announcing to, of all things, a rodent. Sure, that was crazy all in itself. But for some reason, spouting it out aloud as he did to Rodrigo helped him realize that, in the truth of things, that's exactly what he was. Bash Jade in all day and night about her reaction to a situation - it wouldn't magically even compare within a certain reason to what he's done. Or been doing. Or god only knows what else could fit within there as 'fact'.

Rodrigo's beady blackness turned only before his head did, towards the Ravenlock. Slowly, steadily, upwards to the ceiling that Rodrigo swore the man reached to. Like a giant, stupid ape. "That's a start," He exclaimed, dryly yet full of flavor, before returning to look out the window sill. The guy was being serious, and Rodrigo had no reason to deny it. That in itself also seemed to be a temporary medicine.

Until the next round of silence kicked in.

The next round was much longer than the first. Even the faint shuffles of clothing from the big one, or tiny squeaks and chirps from the rodent were absent. It was only to herald in the vast uncomfortable presences that loomed like the worst possible storm clouds imagined overhead. Both of them equally swore on that.

A ruffle of fur, and the rise of a tail meant the tiny on was going to attempt. To reach out? "I left it on the table," he stated plainly. No look, no judgment. No reaction to what he considered the only reason why the tall one found means of coming around. If only for a small bit.

Rodrigo was regarded by Alex with another lift of the brow. That much was lost on him for several long moments. Turning his attention away from the rodent, and to the kitchen, he slipped off to see what the comment was about. Surely enough, located upon the table along with what appeared like a completely drenched piece of parchment was the very necklace that he requested be left behind.

The very thing he spouted in heated anger and angst. Coiling a finger about the chain, he pulled it up into his grasp, observing the still glistening sapphire stone as though it were a window. To what even he couldn't fathom. "Just like?" he uttered quietly, the final bit of words lost to mere movements of his lips. Drawing his attention up, hopeful words escaped him, and towards the rodent. "Has she been here at all?" He called out, defiance present despite the hopelessness that clenched his insides to the point of suffocation.

"That's a negative, boss," Rodridgo said, appearing from just beyond the curve of the hall to the kitchen. Quick as ever, he made his way up onto the table that Alex stood before, observing the soaked letter. "And this thing hasn't dried since I found it several weeks ago. Dunno what it said," he continued, lowering to the parchment to nudge it with the tip of his tiny nose.

A vague glance was made to the paper that Rodrigo indicated, before returning his attention back to the necklace. It was drawn up to the light, being inspected further for any damage that might have been done to it. He was perfectly following trend with further shock at the fact that it appeared perfectly kept. "Probably from Lain. Trash the hell out of it for me, eh?" He stated, fingers coiling about the stone itself before he moved to set the necklace within the pocket of his coat. It was within that same instant that he started for the hall, so to make way for the stairs. "Pack your things," He stated, before disappearing up the flight.

Rodrigo watched as Alex made off, blinking only a single time as he glanced down the length of his figure. "?what the hell do I have to pack?"

"So.. that's what you've decided.." Having a house in the glen, surrounded by trees, had its advantages. A thin, brown clove hung from her lips, trailing smoke through the drizzle as she stared at the door. Stared. Stared as if she was willing it to explode into nothing more than a few splinters to be scattered on the fleeing winds.

She hadn't spent much time in this house.. Never had a reason to, never wanted to. She wasn't a stalker, and she didn't care what kind of dump Alex chose as his current abode. Under separate circumstances, she would have considered the place homely. Somewhere to spend a few hours if you just wanted to leave the world hanging on a string while you relished in isolation. The observation vanished instantly.

Of course, she was following. However, she didn't practice the same 'no shoes' ritual. Had she known it was the case, she would have scuffed off every inch of dirt into the floor. Instantly, her eyes were drawn to-

"Yo, King Rodent, how's it hangin'?" The sentence was nothing more than a tool to alert Alex of her presence, though, she figured that he already knew, by now, she was there. Rodrigo, tagging faithfully after Aka, didn't like her too much, and Lain, keeping true to her feelings, didn't rightly give a crap right back.

"Much better than your face from the looks of it. For someone your age, you'd think you'd be better friends with fate." Tut tut's sounded from his tiny ferret mouth as he crossed his arms. Lain gave a smile around the clove down to Rodrigo.

"Love t'stay'n chat, but I'm pretty sure with Motor Mouth as your mentor, you'll easily take up the last few minutes of your three year uselessness of a lifespan long before you run outta crap t'spew," a jab about Aka during these times was one of her more destructive weapons, and she utilized it often. Pausing momentarily to flick ashes onto the ground, she lifted her gaze, eyes fixed on the stairs. "Where's Big Boy? Upstairs? Thanks. And don't worry about sniffing him out, you'd have a better chance of finding a skunk if you were nose to nose with his rear end." Lain didn't wait for a response, and took a few steps forward.

Magic residue coated the place like dust. She felt Alex's presence, Yami's faint pulls and a sickening combination of the two that had her regretting her lunch. One hand settled along her stomach at the moment Alex decided to traipse back down the stairs. Thin fingers worked little circles on the muscles beneath. Alex gave her a blank glance that she returned.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Lain had a hard time distinguishing his tone. Was he annoyed or surprised? The lack of a remark such as 'Will I ever be rid of you?' had her wonder. She felt a brow arch up into the brim of her knitted ski cap as she thought.

"Could ask you the same thing, yanno.." In one sweeping look, she encompassed the small enclosure, careful to pin her stare and imagination back on Alex just as quickly. Arms folded, ankles crossed, she leaned into the door frame with a shoulder as she looked on. "She's not here."

"I've noticed."

"And she hasn't been for a while." That sentence brought Lain another acknowledging look, and she lifted her brows in an expression that said 'What?' "You told me to keep an eye out for her, so I did. Geez, don't follow orders once, and ya get a fricken track record," she mumbled with an eye roll.

"I already got the briefing from Rodrigo, thanks," he said as the ferret on the table straightened as if proud of relaying this information.

She had nothing to say after that. Only removing the clove periodically to relieve it of ashes and fiddle with it between her long fingers. He hated silence. She knew that. Could tell by the ever-so-slight rigidity that seeped into his posture and movements. He was good at concealing this, however. Lain was proud that she noticed.

"I've got to give you props for not destroying the necklace the second it was in your hands. I would have thought to find it in pieces."

"Yeah, well.. figured it would'a been a waste of both a good sole of a shoe and energy better spent on other things.. like.. caring about stuff." The cigarette was then dropped to the ground and scuffed out harder than usual. "Noticed that the necklace was gone, too. Did'ja wanna have another keepsake from this fiasco? Cuz yanno.. the memory isn't enough?"

"Haven't you got your jealousy under control yet? We're not even together anymore, and I know I've told you more than once that green isn't your color."

Lain scoffed. "Yeah, pretty sure I've still got better things to do than worry about someone who licks her own ass. My main concern is why the hell are you, illustrated with a two fingered jab in his direction, "still here, making sure the necklace is quote en quote 'safe' and all that jazz. What's it to you?"

"What's it to you?" he asked suddenly, though keeping his tone and demeanor perfectly calm. He leveled his gaze on her, looking down while his brows lifted in curiosity. Her eyes dropped, then darted away. She always felt like a child under that stare.

"I asked you first."

"Well, to be honest, I don't think I really have to answer anything you ask me. That mandatory check-in deal ended when we did." Lain's thin lips flattened to an even thinner line.

"If this is how you treat all yer friends, man, I'm totally surprised you still have any.. Oh wait.. You DID call Jade something right nasty last time, so I'm guessin' I should expect it." All of this was sarcastic of course. She cared, and she wanted him to know that. "Look, Alex.. there's nothin' left for you here. Seriously. Comin' back's not gonna make her magically appear. I mean like.. what do you have to owe her?"

"What makes you think any of this is for her?"

She blinked. "What could you possibly get out of this? You didn't get squat the whole time you two were together, and now you're pickin' around her empty house like an idiot! You don't owe her anything, mostly cuz th'little pinchprick didn't even fricken stick around long enough for you to even tell her that-" Then it all suddenly made sense. Or, she thought it did.

Lain let loose a giant sigh, and forced her fingers into her eyes hard enough so that she saw stars. It was hard to keep her judgmental, crap-flailing side down to a dull roar, but she was trying.

"This is all about finalizing things, isn't it.." Crystal blues lifted to him, searching his face for any sign of acknowledgment or answer should he decide not to give her one. "Alright. Alright.." she lifted her hands as if to say 'I surrender,' giving Rodrigo a glance before she began to fish within her pocket for a book of matches. Choosing one, she scraped it against the sandpaper until the orange flame roared to life and set it to the heads of the others. Now, with a small fireball in her hand, she focused her ability on the gravity around it, pushing and pulling it; speeding the molecules of the fire up to the point that they spat and exploded in a messy sphere above her palm. Eyeing the area behind Alex, she sidestepped him and pitched the ball of fire up the stairs. Immediately, the wooden floor, walls and paneling erupted in flame with an enormous and windy WHOOSH sound. Grey smoke began to billow and lift towards the ceiling as the fire ate at anything and everything it came across. Lain decided it was time to go when it began to crawl down the stairs and railing. Once outside, she tugged her jacket more firmly around her and shifted her hat on her head. A few strides away, she turned to find Alex and Rodrigo exiting as well. He looked faintly miffed.

"You know you could have asked me first."

She snorted. "You do what you need t'do. I'll do th'same. Besides..? S'not like you would'a opposed," she said up to him, shrugging and resuming her path. It was slow, however, until he caught up.

"You know... you're just no fun." Lain smiled, but didn't say anything as she cast a glance back at the house. Smoke leaked from the roof, and after a minute squint from her eyes, windows exploded outwards and flames shot out towards the air.
