Two months ago no one would have pegged Kathryn Manchester for a sailor. She spent her days in the small little town of DeClaire behind the counter of the general store that her father, Gregory ran. She was sixteen and had taken up this job three years before hand when after a long sickness her mother died.
Her father had not taken it well at all. He and his beloved Leah had been wed for sixteen years. They had three lovely children. Two boys: Viktor and Alexander then later one daughter Kathryn. Viktor had joined up with the local army men and had gone off on a barge three weeks after his mother was diagnosed. Alexander had stayed till her final moment sitting beside Kathryn at their mothers bed side. Afterwards Alex left, he didn't say where he was going nor when he would be back. With his son gone Gregory had no choice but to put his young daughter to work at the store the family owned in town.
The Manchester General Store was a beacon in the small little sea side town. They sold everything anyone could ever desire. They got in exotic spices and spiced rum from the ships that came in, they had guns, swords, knives and every other weapon mounted up on the walls oh held in the glass cases. They sold powder, and cannon balls.
Clothing filled the back room. Pants and shirts of every size, color and style. Belts and boots. There were also many long lovely dresses, and fine women's shoes.
Kathryn stood behind the counter in her pale blue dress and apron with her long brown hair pulled in to a messy bun behind her head. The store smelt of gunpowder and dust. People from the town and sailors new in port came and went from the shop leaving their gold and silvers for the goods. Gregory often stood int he back office making sure to watch his daughter with the customers. He would watch both the local men and the sailors that came in, to make sure they never gave Kathryn a hard time.
But none dared to. Kathryn held her self high, and spoke well. She would not be taken lightly. Though she dressed plain and she was not. She was far from plain. Many a man took note of her as she stood behind the counter through the years. She stayed on at the store till her twenty-first year. When late one night while closing up the store her father was robbed and shot twice. He died two days later.
After that Kathryn couldn't bare to go to the store for the sake of her fathers memory, to preserve it. So she sold it to the highest bidder. Manchester General Store became a pub. A local place that drew the locals and sailors alike. It was there that she first met a sailor.
