RhyDin Fashion Week Notes from RhyDin Wear Daily:

Get your couture dukes up! The claws and chiffon are out as Fashion Week settles down over New Haven and fans its lacy little tentacles all over our fair city. Whose designs will take a beating and who will come out swinging? This year?s ?The Fighting Spirit? takes us out of Mercer Park and into the dueling rings for multiple events!

Saturday Night Fashion Week Kickoff!


Outside the Outback ? Duel of Swords (RDI Arena)

The Fashion Week party truly started the equivalent of a block before the Outback?s double doors could be reached. A giant clear tent had been raised to encase the entire area (not to mention keep its occupants warm with heaters). Upon lifting the tent flap to enter, guests would be greeted with three options: a lined red carpet to the Outback?s doors for the kickoff party and a glass spiral staircase to the left or the right.

Upon going up either staircase, guests would find themselves with a bird?s-eye view of the dueling rings set up below. Guests traveling down the red carpet would be able to view the fights happening on either side of them at eye level.

Three equally spaced bridges connect the left and right sides of the tent so that spectators can travel between watching rings and red carpet entrances. DJ Two Points, arguably one of the hottest half-elf DJs in RhyDin?s underground music scene, keeps the music going all night long from his upstairs booth on the right. A bar tended by the Avery sisters, three leggy triplets known for their use of gymnastics in their drink pouring, had been set up on the left. There were pockets of leather seats and couches for those who wanted to sit while watching.

Inside the Outback ? Fashion Week Charity Kickoff Event (RDI Outback)

The cleaning crew hired to prepare for Tuesday?s Fists of Fashion had bemoaned how quickly the Outback?s natural scent of sweat and strain returned to the space within a few days of dueling. This time they chose to try and cover the bleach they used with a coconut scent.

The Outback had been transformed into a combined vision of fashionistas joining fighters. The club lighting and ambiance favored by socialites on the scene was met with an interactive display for those who felt more comfortable in presence of underground fight clubs and sport. Dancers from The RhyDin Ballet Troupe and Dockside Dance Squad performed choreographed fight routines around party-goers, using props like netting, crates and the Outback?s legendary Fern with its giant fronds in their routines.

DJ Shifter Talk, a Fashion Week favorite, was back in the booth spinning beats. The Outback?s elaborately carved bar was home to the Xi Xi Bar?s own talented bartender, Kyle Spark, known for his fire juggling tricks.

Several of Rask?s Generic rings had been brought together and covered with white boards and projection screens to create an elevated runway.

Trina?s Cupcake Bar and Mason?s catering service had been hired to cater the affair.

By the sixth day of Fashion Week, Lucy was starting to recognize some of the regular attendees of the main tent events. It reminded her so much of Bryant Park, at times she could forget she wasn?t home in New York. There were the fashionistas, eager to see and be seen. And then the fashion writers wandering around with their noses in their notepads. There were photographers and stylists and artists and those with money they didn?t know how to spend.

The only difference between RhyDin and New York was the occasional, unsettling realization that a person who caught her eye was not at all human, whether the giveaway be their pointed ears, or the deathly pallor of their skin, or the furry ears and tail their clothing had been tailored around. Lucy would get used to it eventually. Eventually.

Lucy hadn?t missed the near daily presence of the pink haired gossip guru -- he was hard to miss, of course -- but she gave him as wide a berth as she could without making it obvious she was avoiding him. There were other faces becoming familiar too, including the man who angled towards the seat beside her as the crowd was settling in for the Millie & Mallie show.

?Is this seat taken?? The man smiled down at Lucy as he gestured towards the chair. His longish black hair was tied back from his face, and he wore a cunning dark gray suit that was obviously tailored for him. He had a strong jaw, and eyes that glinted with gold. Lucy might have found the man handsome, but there was something predatory about the way he looked down at her.

She had seen him before, time and again catching him eyeing her from across the room at some of the earlier shows. She?d assumed he was trying to make a connection, but she had managed to avoid him until now.

?No, it isn?t.? Lucy smiled politely up at the man, then looked back down at her fashion week program.

The chairs were close together, and as the man settled beside her, his shoulder touched her bare shoulder, the soft material of his expensive suit caressing her skin. Lucy felt a strange thrill at the contact, and she shifted in her seat, trying to put some space between them.

He smiled down at her. ?Have you been enjoying the shows??

Lucy glanced up at him, shifting uncomfortably in her seat. ?I have been, yes.? She knew the polite thing to do was to reciprocate the question, but instead she remained silent.

?I must admit, I have been surprised to see a woman as beautiful as you arrive unattended each day.? The man?s voice was deep and smooth, and to Lucy it felt like silk sheets slowly twisting around her. She simultaneously wanted to hear more and was frightened by her own reaction.

Lucy cleared her throat. ?My boyfriend has other things to attend to during the day.? She put extra emphasis on the word ?boyfriend,? glancing up at him, then dismissively back down to her program. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she tried desperately to shake off the feeling that seemed to be tugging her towards the man beside her.

?What a shame for him.? The man reached out and touched a finger to her chin, forcing her to look at him, her eyes meeting his.

As soon as their eyes met, Lucy felt that tug grow stronger, inexplicably drawn towards him. She gazed hungrily at his lips, wanting nothing more than to kiss him, right there in public, and never stop. But somewhere inside, Lucy knew the feeling was wrong. This man wasn?t Colin. This was a stranger. She was only supposed to kiss Colin. She only wanted to kiss Colin. Lucy tried to look away and found she couldn?t.

Lucy?s head swam. She felt out of control. She could feel the man?s cold breath across her lips as he leaned towards her. Inside, she was screaming at herself to stop. And then there was a thought. What would Candy do?

Lucy?s fingers closed around the knife in her purse. As their lips met, it took all of her will to draw out the blade. But it was solid in her hands, cold and strong. The blade was Colin. She pressed the point of the blade to the man?s stomach, and she knew the moment he felt it.

She tore her lips from the man, her breath heaving. The pull he had on her was suddenly gone. She pressed the blade harder, even as her voice shook. ?Whatever you?re doing to me, stop.?

The man laughed, leaning back away from her and away from her blade. ?Why whatever do you mean??

Her eyes narrowed at him and instead of letting him get away, she pressed forward, thinking once again about Candy. She knew she wasn?t that strong. If she were Candy the guy would already be on the floor crying over his busted balls. But she could do her best impression of her. She leaned forward, pressing the blade back against him. ?If you come near me again, I?ll gut you like a fish. Do you understand??

The man leaned all the way back again, his gold eyes glinting. He smiled to cover his discomfort. ?Don?t be angry, dear.?

Lucy stared at him, trying to look as threatening as she could. Then she returned her knife to her bag and got to her feet. As the lights dimmed for the show to begin, Lucy wove her way through the crowded seats until she found another empty one. Nothing was going to make her miss the Millie & Mallie show.

She'd get used to RhyDin. Eventually.
