So? As I?m driving to work this morning, freezing my butt off, I muttered and grumbled, but then I remembered why I was cold.
My new-to-me truck (Jake, the Badside Blazer!) doesn?t have heat and won?t for another 2 weeks. So I?ve been keeping gloves, a scarf and a small (penguin!) blanket in the truck for staying warm when heading to work early in the morning. This morning, I didn?t have these things. Why? I gave them away.
Last night, at my usual stop, at my usual store, an older woman sat outside the door, cold, dirty and homeless. She pulled her ratty flannel tighter around herself to try and shield the wind from her face. Her fingers were weathered and red, dry and wind burned. I got back into Jake and looked to the side, sitting right there was my Morning Warmth Collection. I?m not a nice person, but just the same, I gathered these things up and walked them over to where she sat. She choked up a little and quietly said thank you. As I headed back to Jake, I thought to myself ?Its not going to kill me to not have those things, but not having those things could kill her.?
Then this morning, as I?m driving in, a Pink Floyd song comes onto my IPod that I didn?t even know I had on there. I wanted to share.
~Paige (The Real One)
On The Turning Away ? Pink Floyd ? From Momentary Lapse of Reason
On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we wont understand
Don?t accept that what?s happening
Is just a case of others suffering
Or you?ll find that you?re joining in
The turning away
Its a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting its shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that were all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
Its not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there will be
No more turning away?
