The latest issued of the Den Howler hit the polished marble table within the breakfast nook carved into the side of a large lair. The paper slid an inch before stopping next to a ceramic mug labeled in Goth font spelling out 'Worlds fuzziest mom.' Near the cup was a plate, scrambled eggs, venison, and mango slices untouched. A furred purple hand took up the mug by its handle and the slurp of coffee was heard.
"This is ridiculous." Lene waved a hand to indicate the offending news paper.
"What is ridiculous? That your mother actually attacked Vuusoolta, or that she has a bounty on her head? Or the fact we have a nice army outside the walls of the Den wanting a piece of our hide?" the deep bass voice of Moonshine filled the lair.
Laughter also filled the lair today. Laughter from their little son Calcifer. Just a few months old now and he had learned to sit up without falling over for a few minutes. Lene regarded the Den Holwer again then started on her meal.
"All of it Moon. Mom's not a killer much less someone who would do anything without a reason. As for the foreign army that's what our military is for right? I am more concerned with moms warrant. It puts me in a very tight spot." she mumbled around a muzzle full of eggs and venison.
Moonshine poked his dragon head into the breakfast nook. "I would agree. You would have to bring her in if you found her, or shoot her if she resists. Not a position I want to see my mate in. I don't like strife within a lair, much less a pack of Lupinossai. Any chance of talking to Frost and that lunkhead brother of yours to get the warrant removed?"
Biting into a mango slice, she swallowed before answering. "If there was I would have taken it Moonshine. There's witnesses placing her running from the Den Alphrans house, and all the witnesses showing her attacking the guards to escape. Not good for mom. That, and mom can take care of herself. Hell, she's tougher than any Lupe I've met."
More laughter from Calcifer, then a whining cry as he fell over bonking his head on cushioned floor. He wasn't hurt, but the fall startled him. Lene was up in a heartbeat and holding her son, though he was about half Lene's size now. She sang a lullaby to him and rubbed him all over. Moonshine was right behind her looking over his mate and son. He was proud to have them both.
"I think another reason you haven't tried to help Ammy is you have your own family to think about. Why risk your neck for her when she could possibly put your mate and son in jeopardy?" Moonshine asked softly.
Lene looked up at him for a few moments holding Calcifer to her. "There is that too. I.. don't know what's happened to me. Ever since Calcifer was born I've distanced myself from a lot of people I used to know. I've even gotten more aggressive at work."
Moonshine just chuckled. "Lene, that is purely natural. You are a mother now with a pup. That pup is your life and treasure now and you'll do anything to keep him safe, alive, and happy. Just like I will do anything to keep you two alive, safe, and happy."
Lene stood and gave Moonshine a large hug along with Calcifer. "I know love. I know. I have the day off today from the Fangs. I was thinking of taking Calcifer with me into the Den and Rhydin for a little shopping and some fresh air. Can you come?"
Moonshine rubbed his scaled head with claws in a sign of regret. "I can't. The Den Smith Guild needs some help with a few projects and rumors have it we have a new Lupe in town that can make things that move."
She nodded, giving a slight sigh. "Between the two of us, our work seems to make the 'whole family together' feeling a bit difficult. But I understand. You stay safe at work okay?"
Moonshine chuckled. "And you stay safe today. I know all about your family Lene. The Wolf bloodline seems to be nothing but a magnet for trouble."
He lowered his head and gave Lene a large draconic kiss that ruffled her red mane and purple fur. Soon he was up and out of the lair flying for the Den.
Lene watched her mate leave then sighed. She felt him comfort her via the soul bond, but sometimes that wasn't enough. She wanted to be around her mate physically more. With Calcifer in her arms she headed for one of the indoor pools that was lukewarm in temperature. Before either of them went out, a bath was in order.
