the action, process, or result of combining or uniting.
I?ve done everything I can do to help my patients and continue my experiments. My methods have been questioned, but I am making progress. However, the extra patients we are forced to take are depleting Black Chapel?s resource much quicker than I thought.
I was invited to Henry Berkeley Portman, 2nd Viscount Portman and Liberal Member of Parliament home to celebrate his son?s Gerald Berkeley Portman, 7th Viscount Portman of Bryanston 8th birthday.
At the request of the Viscount and his wife Mary FitzWilliam, I brought some of the children from the asylum, two who acted like monkeys and one who was deaf and quiet. The Viscount?s wife planned an elaborate celebration based off of Carlo Collodi?s Adventures of Pinocchio. Mr. Collodi was to tell his story while it was acted out. There were puppets and other bizarre figurines. The Viscount and his wife have a deep fascination with the bizarre.
In all my days I had no idea this would happen, but after reading this story for children I see why the adults want this party. The story is about an old woodworker named Geppetto. He sees a falling star and wishes his puppet Pinocchio to be a real boy. In the night, the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto's wish and asks Jiminy Cricket to serve as the wooden boy's conscience. But the naive and trusting Pinocchio falls into the clutches of the wicked Honest John, who leads him astray to the sinful Pleasure Island.
I laughed when I heard the story. I went and made my plea. We have some additional support but not nearly the support we need. When I was on my way out, I met a rather seedy man by the name of Lord Sebastian Baker. Lord Baker explained his situation and made it clear he was very interested in my unorthodox methods. He will be building on to Black Chapel and is blackmailing me.
I am not pledged to Lord Baker?s experiments. He?s informed by the beginning of the year, I will have a new wing added and will house, as he put it, extra-ordinary subjects. He spoke of men who changed to beasts, with claws and fangs, he spoke of falling stars and things to change shape before my eyes.
Lord Baker is disturbed; this I am sure of. However, I cannot take the chance that my experiments are known until I have further proof they work. I swear that I will not let him destroy what I?ve worked so hard to build.
He said work will start next week. His architect already has plans for the new wing.
What choice to do I have? How did he know what was going on? I'm sure there's a spy in my midst.
