Edward stood at the door, as he had for the few months or so. Flowers in his hand, behind his back, with a box of candy that was also behind his back. Wearing a pair of khaki colored cargo pants, a tank top and hurachi sandals, he was the image of a tourist. He juggled the flowers and candy to bring a free hand to knock at her door.

Beni had been stretched out on her couch, a book balanced on her stomach as she read by the dim light from the lamp in the corner. Yes, it was bad for her eyes, but she didn't care. She hadn't been expecting Edward tonight; Ro had said something about an intel trip. So the knock at the door made her look up in surprise. Setting a bookmark to keep her page, she set the book down and rolled off the couch, padding across to the door in bare feet to open the door only as far as the chain allowed. Seeing Edward made her smile, though, and she closed the door only to free it from the chain and welcome him in. "Fancy seeing you here."

"Well, you know..." he flushed slightly and stepped inside. Bringing his arms around to reveal the gifts he brought. "For you," he smiled as he looked down at her. "I hope it's not too forward of me, Beni." He glanced around, as was his habit, inspecting the room and listening for any hidden people that didn't belong.

Closing door securely behind him, Beni turned in time to see the gifts held out to her. Her cheeks flushed prettily as she smiled, genuinely surprised and touched by the offerings. "Oh, Edward," she breathed softly, green eyes lifting to his face. "No, it's not too forward." Smiling wide, she stepped close to sniff the flowers, wrapping her hand around his to bring them to her nose.

Edward was very pleased to see her reaction and he smiled happily. "I didn't know if it was appropriate for this stage in our relationship," he offered a bit lamely. "I'm glad you like them."

She couldn't resist teasing him a little for his formal words. "Well, we haven't had a decent argument yet, so don't you think the chocolates and flowers are little premature?" she smiled impishly, eyes sparkling. "Unless you want to jump straight to the make-up sex."

"I don't plan on arguing with you, so I think it's a moot point," he laughed and moved further into the living room, leaving the flowers and candy in Beni's capable hands. "It's so peaceful here. Such a difference from Rose house." He picked up a knick knack and put it back down. "Things are good there?"

She watched him move past, setting the candy box down on a nearby table as she lifted the flowers to smell once again. "They're well enough," she assured him. "A few problems with nightmares, but it looks like those are going to be fading pretty fast. How have you been?" As she asked, she turned toward the kitchen to hunt out a vase.

"Those kids have a lot to have nightmares about," he shook his head and followed her towards the kitchen. "And I've been alright, a bit distracted lately though." He stopped in the doorway of the kitchen and leaned against the doorframe. "So Charlie is out on his first solo intel mission while I came to see you."

She smiled faintly, crouching down to pull a vase from the recesses under the sink. Rising, she half-filled it with water before setting to undoing the bouquet and snip off the ends of the stems. "He must have improved a great deal since we last spoke if he's out there on his own now," she commented. Yes, she was fishing for information she wouldn't dare openly ask for; just why wasn't the neurotic Edward out there himself, like always?

"Yes, he's coming along very well." Edward watched her carefully, then pushed off of the doorway. He strolled over and behind her. Putting his chin to her shoulder, his arms went around her waist. "Besides, I'm considering retiring."

Never let it be said that Beni was capable of keeping her surprises in check. As his arms slipped around her, she gasped softly, laughing at herself even as she relaxed into his embrace, glancing only once at him as she arranged the flowers in the vase. "You couldn't retire," she said quietly. "You're too committed to really consider it."

"My priorities are changing," he murmured and turned his head to nuzzle her jawline with the tip of his nose. "And I'm getting older. I can't run in the night forever."

Her head turned toward him, tilting to welcome the gentle nuzzling as her eyes half-closed. "Changing?" she queried softly, lowering her hands to curl warmly over the arms that wrapped about her.

"Yes, how can I focus on keeping those kids safe when my mind is on whether you're safe?" His arms tightened around her and he tenderly kissed the corner of her mouth.

"Oh, Edward, I don't want to be the reason you leave those kids to themselves," she whimpered tenderly, turning just enough to look him in the eye. Her hand curled against his cheek. "I am safe. I grew up around here, and even if it's a little rough at times, I can deal with it. You wouldn't be the same man if you turned your back on those children, and you wouldn't be able to forgive yourself for it."

His eyes met hers and he slowly nodded. She spoke the truth. "I wish that you'd find a safer neighborhood, Beni. Somewhere closer to Rose House so you don't have to walk so far through such a rough neighborhood." His hand covered hers on his cheek and he closed his eyes.

Her voice was gentle as she answered. "But if I leave, I'll be leaving behind all the memories of Benedict and Clara," she told him tenderly, her thumb stroking over his cheekbone. "I don't know if I can."

"You can take the memories with you, Beni." Edward sighed and pulled away from her. "All of this stuff, it can be moved." He turned back to look at her. "Please Beni. It's driving me crazy that you insist on being so careless."

She turned, her expression stricken. "How is it careless that I'm living in the place that gave me my life back?" she asked him. "I don't understand, Edward; you live in this neighbourhood, and yet you tell me it's not safe for me."

"You've been attacked before. They don't come in single spies, but in battalions, Beni. You know this. You're so busy clinging to the past that you don't see the here and now. Please, see reason, Beni." His brows were knitted and his hands were held out to her. "Please, Beni. I'm involved now. And this is not a safe place for a woman living alone."

She stared at him, clearly torn between hanging onto her memories and taking that scary step outside of what she knew. But ultimately, he mattered to her, and what he thought mattered just as much. "I'll start looking," she agreed finally.

He could see how hard this decision was for her and he felt like a heel for making her do it. Crossing the space between them, he hugged her to his chest, tightly. "Thank you, Beni. I promise, you won't regret it."

Her arms curled to his back as he hugged her to him, pressing her face into his chest with a deep sigh. "I know," she assured him softly. "Thank you."

"For what?" He chuckled softly, glad that this little argument ended as quickly as it had. "I should thank you. It eases my mind a lot that you'll be getting out of the thick of this neighborhood. I want my girl to be safe."

She chuckled softly, lighting up as he called her 'his' girl. Squeezing gently, she leaned back, tilting her head up to look at him. "Of course, by the same argument, you're going to have to move as well, you realise," she pointed out.

"I can't do that," he pulled back enough to look her in the eyes. "Too many people try to follow me and if they find out that the man who steals children in the middle of the night has any connection to Rose House; or anybody who works there, then the entire operation could be exposed."

Her brow rose. "And you think that they won't follow you out of this neighbourhood when you come to see me?" A thought occurred to her, mirrored in the way her expression turned hurt and betrayed. She stepped back, her arms loosening from around him. "You won't come and see me. You're asking me to move so you don't have to break my heart to my face."

"You think that little of me?" His brow creased and his expression darkened. "Really, you think that little of me? That I'd just leave you high... oh my God." He turned and curled his hands in his hair.

She didn't react angrily, or with apologies. This was Beni's greatest strength, and she was rarely called upon to exercise it. She watched him turn away, calm and quiet as she answered. "You spend a lifetime being left behind," she suggested, "and then you can try to blame me for the way I expect the worst."

"I am not them!" He turned and stared at her, disbelieving. "I was only worried that you were going to be attacked again, not trying to figure some elaborate scheme to get you out of my life. If I didn't want you in my life, would I even be here?"

"No. You wouldn't." His anger was unsettling her, raising a suspicion that was worrying and intriguing. He'd reacted so suddenly to her quiet worry, so violently. Who had he left in the past to be so defensive when he was accused of wishing to do the same again, she wondered. "I'm sorry."

Edward sighed and blew out a breath. "No, I'm sorry. I've never been in a relationship and I'm not sure I'm doing any of this right. I promise you, Beni, you're going to be sick of seeing me so often."

"There's no right or wrong way to do anything," she told him quietly. "But hypocrisy is never going to get a good response from me, I'll warn you right now." She stepped forward just one step; a silent invitation. "And no. I won't get sick of seeing you."

He stepped forward as well. "I'm not being a hypocrite. It's my job to see to the safety of the ones I care for, Beni. And I can't think of anybody that I care for more than you."

"Well, that makes two of us." It was a quiet confirmation that what had begun in fun had turned deadly serious, further confirmed by the way she stepped into the circle of his arms, curling her own about him warmly as her cheek came to rest against his chest.

As his arms curled around hers, his cheek came to rest atop her head. "You confuse me so much, Beni. I've never felt this way before." His eyes closed and he inhaled deeply, nostrils flaring slightly. "Is this what love feels like?"

She sighed with him, her own eyes closing as she savoured the feeling of him surrounding her. "I don't know," she admitted. "I've never been in love before."

A slow smile curled his lips, but his eyes remained closed. "Are you now?" His arms tightened; he wasn't going to let her go, not when he was hanging on her every word.

Her answer wasn't studied or considered; she spoke from the heart, from her instinct, from what kept her coming back to him no matter what happened. "I think so."

"Me, too." His answer was just as knee jerk, but it felt right. "Y'know, I could move. I mean, you're only two doors down. And I'm pretty good at getting away from people who follow me."

Her head lifted, allowing her to look into his eyes in astonishment. But this time there was no jumping to conclusions. "What do you mean?" she asked, waiting for him to clarify himself.

"Well, I could move in here. I don't have a lot of stuff and I could walk with you to and from work. Or I could drive you. Just so you know, I have been known to leave the toilet seat up and the cap off of the toothpaste."

She snorted with laughter. "Well, I clean the house naked and squeeze the toothpaste from the middle," she informed him through a surprisingly delighted smile. "It's always best to get these things out in the open early on. I keep a spare room made up, if you're not comfortable to sleep in with me yet."

"I clean the house naked, too!" He laughed with her and hugged her tightly. "What would be the point of that? I'm really moving in so that I can wrestle you into the bed and have my way. That's all." he tried to keep the smile off of his face, but failed miserably.

Laughing, Beni was utterly charmed all over again by how easily this strong, silent man smiled in her presence. According to Ro, Edward's smiles for a year could be counted on ten fingers. "You could have had your way with me weeks ago," she intimated to him in a whisper. "But shh ... don't tell anyone."

"It'll be our secret," he smiled back at her as he lowered his head, placing a soft, gentle kiss before pulling back. Then he lowered once more and kissed her thoroughly. It had seemed, to Edward, that he'd never be able to get this close to anybody and was truly surprised at how easily this was coming to him.

Her smile as his lips left hers was nothing to the grin that then was pressed against his mouth as he lowered to kiss her more thoroughly, her arms winding up and about his neck as she pressed close to him, giving just as good as she got. Beni had had flings that lasted anything up to two weeks in the past, but never anything that touched her this deeply. And she couldn't have picked a better man to fall for.
